2012 was one of my best years: Rohan

Written By Unknown on Senin, 31 Desember 2012 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: He was unwittingly dragged into the biggest controversy to rock Indian tennis this year, but ace doubles player Rohan Bopanna still considers the past 12 months as "one of the best" of his career.

"It's been a great year with all the ups and downs. It's definitely one of my best years as I defended my Paris Masters title, making the World Tour finals, playing the Olympics, winning a 500 event in Dubai and reaching two Master series finals. It's been one of my best years on Tour," Bopanna said in an interview.

Bopanna was involved in an ugly selection row with the AITA ahead of the London Olympics involving his then partner Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

After the Olympics, Bopanna and Bhupathi were banned by the AITA for not abiding by the selector's decision although the court had stayed that decision later on.

Bopanna won the BNP Paribas Paris Masters and Dubai Duty Free tournament while ended runners-up in Barclays ATP World Tour Doubles Finals, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Shanghai and ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Cincinnati partnering Bhupathi in a largely successful year which helped the 32-year-old Bangalorean swell his Doubles career titles tally to seven.

Bopanna, who would be seen in action at the Aircel Chennai Open with new partner Rajeev Ram, said the 18th edition of the tournament boasts of a formidable doubles line-up.

"It's a very formidable doubles line-up. Every year, it has been a tough field and 2013 also you have Bhupathi/Daniel Nestor and Paes/Roger Vaselin in action. Stanislas Wawrinka is also a formidable name who always play doubles with Frank Dancevic from France.

"There are couple of young teams also out there who have been playing the doubles for a while. It's going to be a tough tournament from the first round itself, so we can't slack at any time. I am looking forward to a good start to the season," he said.

Bopanna parted ways with his long-term mentor and doubles partner Bhupathi after the season-ending ATP Tour Finals last month and paired up with American Ram for the 2013 season.

And Bopanna now hopes to launch the newly-formed Indo-American duo's campaign at the Chennai Open on a winning note.

"It's our first tournament and it's just about getting used to a new partner and know each other well. I played with him once in 2008, it still takes time to get adjusted with somebody new. Hopefully we can start off with a bang (in Chennai)," he said.

"Every tournament we play, we want to win it. We have to reach a level where getting into the third round or reaching the quarters does not cut the ice. We are definitely looking to go all the way and finish right on the top of every tournament we play. That's the goal we will set in at the beginning of every tournament and hoping to lift the trophy at the end of the week," he added.

Bopanna said Chennai has always been a special hunting ground for him and he has a special liking for the southern city.

"Chennai has been a very special hunting ground for me. There have been a lot of memories. This is the place from where it all began. I won my first singles title at a national tournament. I won my futures title in singles here, then took India to the World Group beating Brazil in the Davis Cup," he said.

"It's a special place where I always love to play. People are really friendly out here and love to watch tennis. That really brings the best out of me," he signed off.

Djokovic dodges injury as Serbia win

PERTH (Australia): World number one Novak Djokovic escaped serious injury in an incident with over zealous fans after helping Serbia beat Italy at the mixed teams Hopman Cup in Perth on Monday.

Djokovic, who only arrived in the city on Sunday evening after winning an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi, was too good for Italian Andreas Seppi, defeating him 6-3, 6-4.

After the match, Djokovic made his way to sign autographs for youngsters at the side of the court. But as fans clamoured to get the Serbian star's attention the barrier holding them back fell onto his legs.

Djokovic spent a few moments on his haunches before gingerly walking off the court and cancelling his post-match press conference to get treatment.

However the 25-year-old showed no signs of discomfort when he returned to the court for mixed doubles a short time later and played down the incident.

"I am good," he said. "It was a bit of a shock and I am glad that the children involved are okay. I am fine."

Djokovic, aiming for a third straight Australian Open title in Melbourne next month, made it 10 wins from as many matches against Seppi, in their first meeting since the Serb came from two sets down to win at this year's French Open.

Monday's win secured the tie for Serbia with his team-mate Ana Ivanovic, the top seeds for the eight-nation event and playing the event together for the third time.

The Italians won the dead mixed doubles rubber.

Ivanovic gave the Serbians the lead with a commanding straight sets win over fellow French Open winner Francesca Schiavone in the women's singles.

In an impressive start to her new campaign, Ivanovic won 6-0, 6-4.

Having been in Australia for more than a week, Ivanovic showed she was in good shape for next year's first Grand Slam by overpowering Schiavone.

Ivanovic went into the match with wins over the Italian in their only four previous meetings, and continued that dominance.

Schiavone held break points in the first game, but Ivanovic steadied and then won the first seven games of the match.

Her only hiccup came when she was broken while serving for the match at 5-3, but she immediately broke back to secure the win.

Ivanovic, ranked 13th in the world after a solid 2012, said she was trying to play more aggressively as she seeks to recapture the form that took her to number one in the world earlier in her career.

"I felt like I played well," the 2008 French Open champion said.

"I feel I have a lot more on the ball and I am playing the way I used to play before, setting up the points and using my forehand.

"The things I worked on during the off-season are paying off."

Mumbai almost in quarters of Ranji

NAVI MUMBAI: Mumbai are all but sure to make the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy as they took a huge 203-run lead against Gujarat and then reduced the visitors to 159 for five in their second innings on the third day of their Group A match on Monday.

Mumbai can even force an outright win if they take the remaining five Gujarat wickets early and then overhaul the target quickly.

Gujarat are still trailing by 44 runs with Manprit Juneja (39) at the crease.

Gujarat skipper Parthiv Patel and Manprit steadied the ship after the visitors lost three early wickets. They added 78 runs for the fourth wicket at the D Y Patil Stadium.

Centurion in the first innings' Patel scored a run-a-ball 47, packed with four fours and a six, before being caught in the first slip by his counterpart Wasim Jaffer.

Gujarat soon lost Rujul Bhatt (8), who came into bat for Patel in the last over, with Juneja still batting at 39.

Pacer Javed Khan, who shared the new ball with Dhawal Kulkarni, and Ankeet Chavan scalped two wickets each while Suryakumar Yadav picked up a wicket.

Earlier in the day, Mumbai added 124 runs to their overnight score of 323 and were bundled out at lunch for 447.

Suryakumar Yadav (42) and Abhishek Nayar shared a 45-run partnership before Yadav was trapped leg before by Kushang Patel.

Nayar, unconquered at 72, batted well in the company of Zaheer Khan and struck nine fours. The duo shared a 48-run stand for the last wicket.

Mumbai suffered a set back when skipper Zaheer Khan got hit on his leg by bowler Ishwar Choudhury and took treatment to resume his batting. He got out at 11, hitting two fours but was not on field when Gujarat came out to bat for the second time around. Khan had picked up two wickets in he first innings.

Rush Kalaria and Kushang Patel grabbed three wickets each to help their side go through the Mumbai batting order.

Brief Score:

Gujarat: 244 and 159/5 (Parthiv Patel 47, Manpreet Juneja 39 batting; Javed Khan 2/22, Ankeet Chavan 2/59)

Mumbai 1st Innings 447 all out (Wasim Jaffer 171, Hiken Shah 82; Rush Kalaria 3/80, Kushang Patel 3/79)

Rivals support Nadal comeback bid

DOHA: Two of Rafael Nadal's top ten rivals have spoken out against critics who say that the winner of eleven Grand Slam titles can never again be the player he was.

David Ferrer, the world No.5 from Spain, and Richard Gasquet, the world No.10 from France, both contradict the idea that Nadal's prolonged absence is too long even for him to become the world's best player again.

The murmurs of doubters increased with Friday's news on Nadal that his six months on the sidelines with a damaged knee will be followed by more weeks out, reportedly because of gastro-enteritis.

But Ferrer, voted Spanish player of the year in Nadal's absence, talks differently.

"The good news is he doesn't have pain in the knees, so that's the most important," he said, contradicting suggestions that the statement that Nadal has been unwell is merely cover for continued mobility problems.

"I spoke with him few days ago. He was sick with a virus, and he preferred to stop (practising). And he will come back in South America (Acapulco in February).

"Rafael, he can do it because he's a very good player. He's a special player, no? He's not like anyone else. Rafael, he's very competitive, he's a winner, and he's young also.

"I have confidence that when he comes back he will play good.

"Maybe not in his first tournaments because they are often tough, but I am sure he is coming back to number two or number one in the world."

Gasquet sounds even more certain of Nadal's resilience, suggesting that the seven-time French Open champion will be adding to his record-breaking exploits as soon as June.

"For sure he has problem with his knee, but I'm sure he's coming back on clay in a month, and I'm sure he will be ready for Monte Carlo, that kind of tournament," Gasquet said.

"He will be a hundred per cent. I'm pretty sure he will come back at his best level soon.

"He's coming back on a clay court, which is better for his knee. For sure he will come back at his top form for Monte Carlo (in April), these kind of tournaments. And for me he's still the favourite for Roland Garros.

"Nadal is one of the best. He's incredible. I'm sure he will come back at his best level, and that he can still win a lot of Grand Slams."

Asked therefore why there were so many people who doubted that such things were possible, Gasquet had a one-word answer - "journalists."

Meanwhile the top-seeded Ferrer has an extra incentive to do well over the next five days here at the Qatar Open, a lucrative and high profile build-up event for the new year's first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, starting in Melbourne in two weeks time.

Ranking calculations suggest that the increasingly versatile player from Valencia, who won more matches (76) and more titles (seven) than any other player on the 2012 ATP World Tour, will climb above the fourth-ranked Nadal for the first time in his career if he reaches Saturday's final here.

I am available for Davis Cup: Bhupathi

CHENNAI: Veteran Indian tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi on Monday indicated that all his issues with the All India Tennis Association (AITA) have been sorted out and he may represent the country in the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Korea.

Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna were banned by AITA for defying the London Olympics selection but Karnataka high court had stayed the ban when the players appealed against it.

Both Bhupathi and Bopanna had refused to team up with Leander Paes for the London Games.

"I have made myself available. AITA had sent me an email asking me whether I am available for selection and I have said that I am available.

"Court case has been stayed for months and months ago. As far as I know, the AITA has sent me an email asking me whether I am available for selection. I have said that I am available. Obviously, it is good that they have done that," Bhupathi said ahead of the Chennai Open.

Specifically asked if he is ready to pair with any player, an apparent reference to Paes, Bhupathi said, "I have made myself available. That is the bottom line. There is no point in speculating as to who is going to play with me. They asked me whether I am going to play, I said yes."

Talking about Chennai Open, the season-opener, Bhupathi there are several contenders for the title.

"Daniel ask me about it last year and we have playing. Planning to play with him the whole season. Besides us, Leander and Roger are strong combination. Rohan and Rajiv Ram is a dangerous duo. Obviously we are all playing with new partners for the first time and it is going to be interesting," he said.

Bhupathi said during the off season, he worked on a few aspects of his game to adjust to the style of play of Nestor.

"I was working on my forehands for switching sides because Daniel is a strong AD court player. Few changes that I had to make.

Many world stars, including Rafel Nadal, have come to play in Chennai Open and Bhupathi said it gives you a reason to be happy.

"Over the years barring Roger Federer we are pretty much attracted. Quite an amazing group of talented players come for it from Rafa to Boris to Kaflinikov and so on. Even this year Tomas Bewrdych is six in the world. It all depends on how they want to plan their schedule for a new season. It is not very easy but I am glad that talents come to India."

Bhupathi hoped that more Indian players will make the singles main draw here in future.

"Obviously at some point we would like Indian boys to come through qualifying to main draw. Rohan did that a few years ago and Yuki had done that. There are lot of opportunities for Indian players as the tour is not as tough. Hopefully, we will see many Indians would be coming through qualifying to main draw," he said.

Jamshed leads Pak to 6 wickets victory

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Desember 2012 | 22.58

CHENNAI: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's heroic unbeaten century under pressure went in vain as archrivals Pakistan held their nerve to clinch the first one-day international with a comfortable six-wicket victory in a low-scoring contest on Sunday.

Scorecard | Match in Pics

India posted 227 for six after recovering from a precarious 29 for five one stage but that turned out to be insufficient for the Pakistanis who rode on Nasir Jamshed's unbeaten century to overhaul the target with 11 balls to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Dhoni played a captain's knock with an unbeaten 113, his 8th ODI century, to script a brilliant Indian recovery after left-arm pacer Junaid Khan (4/43) exploited the overcast conditions to rip through the top-order and leave the hosts gasping for breath within the first 10 overs.

The Indian captain found an able ally in Suresh Raina (43) first and then Ravichandran Ashwin (31 not out) to take the score beyond the 200-run mark which looked doubtful at one stage following the top-order collapse.

Dhoni and Ashwin put on a record seventh wicket partnership of 121 runs but the Indian captain's superlative knock off 125 balls lost much of its value as the Pakistani batsmen went about the task of chasing down the target without taking too many risks.

Younis Khan (58) and Shoaib Malik (34 not out) were the other notable performers for Pakistan.

The Pakistani innings started on a disastrous note as ODI debutant Bhuvneshwar Kumar produced a beauty to get rid of Mohammed Hafeez with the very first delivery of the Pakistan innings.

The ball came back sharply after pitching as Hafeez didn't offer a stroke only to find his off-stump knocked back.

The youngster got rid of Azhar Ali a few overs later to reduce the visitors to 21 for two. But the experienced Younis Khan and Nasir steadied the Pakistan innings with a solid 112-run third wicket partnership.

Both Jamshed and Younis benefitted due to some horrendous decisions given by the Indian umpire S Ravi. Jamshed was lucky to get a reprieve on 24 when an inside edge was caught by Virender Sehwag in first slip off Ashwin but Ravi turned down the appeal.

Ravi also negated a plumb leg before decision against Younis when the right-hander missed a delivery from Ashwin in his bid to play the sweep shot.

Younis returned to the pavilion when Ashwin latched on to a low catch off Ashok Dinda, a decision which was referred to the TV umpire by on-field umpire Billy Bowden. But by that time, the visitors were already in a good position and just needed to bat sensibly to reach the target.

Jamshed, who grew in confidence as the innings wore on, was dropped by Yuvraj Singh when on 68 off Dinda much to the disappointment of a sizeable holiday crowd at the Chepauk.

Just when Pakistan seemed to be cruising along comfortably, Ishant Sharma enlivened the proceedings to some extent by getting rid of captain Misbah-ul-Haq (16) with a slower ball which knocked down the off stump.

It was Malik, who hit the winning runs with a pull towards deep mid-wicket boundary off the first ball of the penultimate over.

Earlier, put into bat, India plunged into trouble straightaway with Gautam Gambhir (8), Virender Sehwag (4), Virat Kohli (0), Yuvraj Singh (2) and Rohit Sharma (4) returning to the pavilion in quick succession as Junaid got the ball to swing under overcast conditions.

The Pakistani pacers took advantage of the moisture on the track and troubled the top-order batsmen with the new ball. Once the ball got a little older, Dhoni and Raina applied themselves and started rebuilding the Indian innings.

The two teams will now travel to Kolkata for the second ODI to be held on January 3 while the third and final match will be staged at the Ferozeshah stadium in New Delhi on January 6.

Pacer Junaid had justified his captain Misbah-ul-Haq's decision to bowl first in damp conditions with struggling opener Sehwag becoming Junaid's first victim.

The Delhi batsman, considered a game-changer for his ability to take the attack to the opposition, swung it Pakistan's way after slogging for 11 balls to get four runs.

Sehwag was castled by a Junaid delivery that came in a shade after pitching.

The big four of the Indian batting order were all bowled, three of them by Junaid, who seemed unplayable getting the ball to move appreciably both in the air and off the pitch.

The proverbial promising batsman of the side, Rohit added another one to his growing list of failures, becoming Junaid's fourth victim after scratching around for 14 deliveries for his four runs.

Rohit's last six ODI innings now read a disappointing 4, 4, 4, 0, 0 and 5. In fact, the top five managed to pull off just two fours for the team.

At 29/5 in a little less than 10 overs, India were staring firmly down the barrel before Raina and Dhoni came together to repair the innings slowly and steadily.

The duo cautiously added 73 runs for the sixth wicket and defied Pakistani bowlers for a good 23 overs.

Dhoni got a life on 16 when in the 26th over rival skipper Misbah-ul Haq dropped him at midwicket of Mohammed Hafeez's bowling and the Indian, who smashed seven fours and three sixes, made it count.

Dhoni was suffering from dehydration and also battled cramps towards the end of India innings.

Meanwhile, Raina's patient innings came to an end when he lost his leg stump to Hafeez. But Dhoni was unfazed and, in fact, accelerated from that point, reaching his fifty with a whip over midwicket boundary off Umar Gul.

For a man not exactly known for solid technique, Dhoni was the lone Indian batsman to smash spin ace Saeed Ajmal for a six. A new ball had to be sought to replace the one which went out of the ground.

He also brought up his hundred in style, hoicking Irfan over cover in the 49th over, which produced 21 runs with Dhoni doing most of the scoring. For Pakistan, Junaid was the most successful bowler, grabbing 4/43 in his nine overs.

This was the first match played under the new ICC rules. Under these rules, one new ball was used at each end, bowlers were allowed two bouncers an over, there was no batting Power Play, the bowling Power Play was completed before the 40th over, and at no stage in the innings more than four fielders were allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

Jaffer puts Mumbai's one foot in quarters

MUMBAI: Opener Wasim Jaffer (171) scored a big hundred as Mumbai enhanced their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage of the Ranji Trophy by taking a 79-run lead against Gujarat in their Group A match, on Sunday.

Replying to Gujarat's 244, Mumbai ended the day two at a solid 323 for five with Suryakumar Yadav (23) and Aditya Nayar (6) at the crease.

Jaffer, who was six overnight, batted superbly almost all day as Gujarat managed just three wickets on Sunday.

Jaffer's 171 came off 271 balls with the help of 21 fours and a six.

Jaffer lost partner Aditya Tare (20) early but found good support from Hiken Shah (82) as the two added 213 runs for the third wicket.

The partnership was broken by Samit Gohel when he castled Shah, who faced 186 balls and hit 10 boundaries in his 82-run knock.

Left-arm paceman Rush Kalaria denied Jaffer a double century as he had the Mumbai opener caught by Gohel in the fag end of the day.

Kalaria also sent packing Nikhil Patil, who could not even open his account.

Brief Scores:

Gujarat 1st innings: 244 all out
Mumbai 1st innings: 232 for seven in 99 overs. (Wasim Jaffer 171, Hiken Shah 82; Rush Kalaria 2-48).

Dhoni played well for his ton: Misbah

CHENNAI: His gritty century could not help India win but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's ton under challenging conditions was acknowledged and appreciated by his counterpart Misbah-ul-Haq, on Sunday.

Scorecard | Match in Pics

Dhoni scored a fighting 113 when India were staring down the barrel at 29 for five after being put into bat in bowling friendly conditions.

Dhoni was also adjudged Man-of-the-match for his knock. "It was more difficult to play in the first half. There was lot of moisture but very well played by Dhoni. He single-handedly took the game away from us but in the end (Nasir) Jamshed played brilliantly for us," Misbah said at the post match presentation ceremony.

"Nasir played an extremely good knock and showed the way by finishing the game," he added.

Misbah said his fast bowlers -- Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan -- did a fantastic job of the side after winning a crucial toss.

"It was a good toss to win. It was an excellent spell by Junaid. He has done it before in a Test match in Sri Lanka. There was something for the bowlers but of you don't bowl in the right areas when the ball is seaming, you don't get result. Good to see that the bowlers pitched in the right areas in helping conditions," he said.

Dhoni said it was always difficult to comeback in the match after losing half-the-team at a score 29 and he chose not to play big shots while batting with Suresh Raina.

"I am satisfied with my batting. There was something for the fast bowlers, but they also pitched it in the right areas. Once we lost five wickets, it was difficult to come back.

"We delayed the slog to get to a respectable score. 227 was a good score from where we had started but overall, it was not enough in the end. The wicket got better later and our part-timers struggled," Dhoni said.

Pakistan skipper said it was difficult for the fast bowlers despite helpful conditions due to high level of humidity.

"It was hit and muggy. Humidity was a factor as both teams found it hard. Credit must be given to both teams' fast bowlers for bowling in such conditions," he said.

Umpire howlers contribute to India's loss

CHENNAI: A couple of horrendous decisions by Indian umpire S Ravi contributed to India's six-wicket defeat to arch-rivals Pakistan in the first ODI on Sunday.

New Zealand's Billy Bowden and S Ravi were the two on-field umpires for the series-opener and some of the decisions by the Indian went against the home team which also lost a crucial toss under overcast conditions at the MA Chidambaram stadium.

The Indians were done in by some poor umpiring by Ravi in the first ball of the 18th over off-spinner R Ashwin.

Centurion Nasir Jamshed, who was batting on 24 then, misjudged a flighted ball from Ashwin which took the inside edge off his pads and Virender Sehwag took a smart catch at first slip. The Indians initially appealed for a leg before and then for a catch but Ravi turned down the appeal.

Luck again favoured the visitors in the 28th over when a loud shout for leg before against Younus Khan was turned down by Ravi with Ashwin being the bowler again. Younus, who was on 46 then, missed his sweep shot and got hit in front of middle and off but the verdict went against the Indians.

Both Jamshed (101 not out) and Younus (58) were largely responsible for rebuilding the Pakistani innings as they were struggling at 21 for two at one stage and the umpiring errors proved costly for the Indians. The duo put on a 112-run partnership for the third wicket which put the visitors on course again.

The quality of Indian umpiring has not been quite upto the mark in recent times which is reflected by the fact that no Indian umpire is in the list of ICC's Elite panel.

Former Indian captain S Venkatraghavan was the last Indian umpire on the panel but since his retirement no other umpire has made it to the list.

India have four umpires in the ICC Emirates International Panel. They are Sudhir Asnani, S Ravi, Vineet Kulkarni, C Shamshuddin.

Cricket won't be the same without Sachin

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 29 Desember 2012 | 22.58

Just as the absence of heat makes us feel cold, the absence of controversies in his resume make Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar the coolest of all Indian icons. Ever wondered what goes into the making of a man who has become a legend in his lifetime? There is a lot more to Sachin than just being a run-machine.

His greatness as a batsman lies not in having made more runs than anyone else, but the process he adopted. Sachin's success underlines the fact that talent alone is not enough. It is what you do with it that matters in the final analysis. Not for a second has Sachin let his focus slip. He has always preferred the hard grind to shortcuts. In spite of his cult status and the trimmings (fame, power, wealth) that go with it, Sachin has never let anything interfere with his game.

We may not think twice about criticizing him for just about everything - his batting technique, hairstyle, sartorial sense, nomination to Rajya Sabha and his decision to play on - but no matter what you say, or how much the critics crib, you can never provoke a reaction from the Little Master, who believes in keeping his own counsel.

CHASING HIS DREAMS

They say, a closed mouth gathers no foot. Never has an Indian celebrity spoken so little and yet inspired so much awe as Sachin. Lack of sound bites has not dimmed the media's enthusiasm to relentlessly pursue the man who has always let his bat do the talking.

Not one word out of place, not one step out of turn in his 23-year career in the course of which Sachin has scaled peaks of success that lesser mortals can only dream of.

Yet, he continues to be humble and honest - values that his parents had instilled in him at an early age. If at 39, his brand value remains intact, it is because he continues to inspire millions to dream.

Sachin, of course, started dreaming about playing for the country quite early. When he was picked in the Indian squad for the Pakistan tour in 1989, Sachin was 16, not even old enough to sign the contract papers sent by BCCI. He continues to live his dream even today.

It has been a fascinating journey that has taken him across continents, exposed him to hostile conditions and challenged him to rise to the occasion at every turn. Critics who label him as 'selfish' often lose sight of the fact that Sachin spent his entire teenage life and youth in the service of the nation whose stock in international cricket was not very high.

Sachin's Taurian stubbornness was on view in his very first Test match in Karachi when he stood up to Pakistan's hostile three-pronged pace attack, comprising Imran, Wasim and Waqar, but it was not until Silakot that Sachin earned his stripes.

On a green, fast and bouncy pitch, Sachin was hit on the bridge of his nose by a snorter from Waqar. He, however, refused to go off the field and took fresh guard after staunching the flow of blood with a handkerchief. His steely resolve and ample talent found full expression in the same over when he twice drove Waqar to the cover boundary even as placards saying, "Go home and drink milk" went up in the stands. Seniors in the squad like Kapil, Vengsarkar, Shastri and Srikkanth were all very protective of the teenager on his maiden tour, but that was the day when Sachin came of age and the nation fell in love with him.

PRISONER OF FAME

Today he is the elder statesman in the side, but such is his stature that youngsters half his age hero-worship him. He has had to constantly work on his game to remain one step ahead of bowlers are always on the lookout for the most prized scalp in international cricket.

It will be unfair to dismiss Sachin as an intensely private person who shuns public life. True, like most celebrities, Sachin too is a prisoner of his own fame, but those who have shared time and space with the "master" describe him as a "regular" guy who relaxes by listening to music, prefers seafood, loves to drive fast cars and enjoys the company of his family most. He is used to being mobbed. Just about everyone, his fans and opponents included, wants a piece of the man who had "reminded " the peerless Donald Bradman "of himself".

He has the temperament of a hermit. He is not known to refuse an autograph-seeker or pose for a photograph. Even when he has got a poor umpiring decision, he's never thrown a tantrum. The only occasions when we have seen him a touch agitated is when someone moved across the sight screen. When it is between him and the bowler, he brooks no interference. It was mainly due to his discomfiture at the crease that the ICC has been obliged to raise the height of sight screens at all international venues.

His teammates have marvelled at his genius while batting with him. Rahul Dravid admitted to getting a "weird" feeling when he found spectators starting to clap after being dismissed cheaply. Later he realised that it was in anticipation of the Little Master's arrival at the crease!

This trend continues even today as Sachin prepares to walk into the sunset. Earlier this year, fans at Sydney, where Sachin has a great record, and the Adelaide Oval, Bradman's backyard, admitted to having a lump in their throats as they gave him a standing ovation one final time.

Sachin would be not human if it had not affected him. To his credit, he betrayed no emotion and acknowledged the cheers by gently raising his bat that betrayed him for the first time Down Under.

He sought comfort in his family. A doting father to his two children Sara and Arjun and a loving husband to Anjali, whom he first met - and later courted - at the Mumbai airport while waiting for his luggage to arrive, Sachin is the quintessential family man we all aspire to be.

His father had the biggest influence on him and it was his mother Rajani who sent him back to England, saying his country needed him more for India's World Cup campaign in 1999, when Sachin had air-dashed to Mumbai to attend his father's last rites.

He is excited to see Arjun among Mumbai U-14 probables. Bowling to Arjun in the nets is a ritual that Sachin really enjoys, but he wants to put no pressure on him, realising that the young boy has his hands full living up to a surname that the world of cricket doffs its hat to.

SACHIN THE SLEEPWALKER

Among the other things that Sachin enjoys is go-karting. He simply loves to drive fast. He permits himself a quiet chuckle when he sees the frightened expression on his co-passengers ' faces. He is also a very talented table tennis player and is always up for a game or two with his teammates.

Like most cricketers, Sachin too is superstitious. He is particularly finicky about his bat. His teammates recall that a young Sachin was so worried about his bat not arriving in time that he was found sleepwalking at the team hotel in Faisalabad in 1989. Known to use the heaviest bat (1.51 kg) in the business, Sachin refused to use lighter ones even after he suffered a tennis elbow. During the Eden Test earlier this month, he had his 'lucky' bat as well as an old arm guard 'fixed' before the match and ended up scoring 76, which turned out to be his highest score in the series.

Much before Sachin struck up a friendship with tennis ace Roger Federer, he was a John McEnroe fan. He was just eight years old when he watched McEnroe end Bjorn Borg's five-year reign at the Big W in 1981 on television and then proceeded to copy his idol's look by reining in his mass of curly hair with a hairband and donning wrist bands!

Like all Taurians, Sachin is a loyal friend. He has a very close circle of friends and it is only when he is in their company that the real, fun loving Sachin emerges. His friends say that if he sets his mind on something, you can rest assured that he will achieve it.

They point to the Sydney Test in 2004 when Sachin made an epic 241 without playing a single stroke between thirdman and cover because he had been getting out caught in that region too frequently.

These are feats of a man who, many say, is destiny's child. To say he has enriched the game with his exceptional talent is like thanking the sun for sunshine. Cricket will not be the same when he walks into the sunset.

Rain may spoil India-Pakistan first ODI

CHENNAI: Honours shared in the T20 series, arch foes India and Pakistan are now set for what is likely to be an exhilarating three-match ODI series showdown but weather gods could prove to be the dampener in the opening clash on Sunday.

If the Twenty20 matches were any indication, the ODI series is bound to leave the fans asking for more but the only concern is the rain that has lashed the city and is not expected to relent even on Sunday.

It has been raining in the city since Saturday night and the met office has predicted light to heavy showers for Sunday, which raises the possibility of the day match being called off without even a ball being bowled.

But if the weather gods do smile, the two teams could set the temperatures soaring given that their key players seem to be in good form.

For India, the biggest positive to emerge from the two Twenty20 games gone by was Yuvraj Singh's fantastic form.

The left-hander was nothing short of inspiring with the bat smashing a 36-ball 72, which included seven sixes, in the second T20 and is set to be back in the ODI fold after the Player of the Tournament-winning show in the 2011 World Cup.

But the top-order would be a concern given that both the openers -- Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir -- have not been in the best of touch in the recent past. Both of them struggled immensely in the demoralising Test series defeat to England.

Virat Kohli, at number three, has also not been in form to an extent and these three would have to get their act together for India to be dominant in the batting department.

In the middle-order, it could be a toss up between Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma while Yuvraj and Suresh Raina are expected to make the rest of the batting line-up.

On the bowling front, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made a dream T20 debut by grabbing 3/9, could be handed an ODI cap as well for his impressive show in the shortest format.

After a decent outing in the T20s, Ishant Sharma would be leading the pace attack with Ashok Dinda and Bhuvneshwar as his likely partners.

The spin department would be spearheaded by local star R Ashwin in all likelihood, even though he has been far from impressive of late.

For Pakistan, it would be a change of leaders as Misbah-ul-Haq would be captaining the ODI side.

The temperamental side, which is exceptional one day and ordinary the other, also has solid performers in the line-up and should prove quite a handful for the hosts.

The openers -- Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed -- have settled down nicely into their roles. Hafeez, in fact, has been calmness personified in a mercurial team, as was evident from his Man of the Series-winning performance in the T20s against the arch-rivals.

Old warhorse Younis Khan would lend the much-required stability, while the Akmal brother --Umar and Kamran -- will provide the spark in a strong middle-order.

Pakistan have the clear edge over India as far as bowling is concerned with Umar Gul being the most potent pacer. Saeed Ajmal's spin has always troubled the Indians even though the hosts did take him to task in the second T20.

With not much separating the two teams, it promises to be an exhilarating contest but the result could well be decided by the weather gods given the continuing rain in the city.

Teams (from):

India: MS Dhoni (Capt.), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Amit Mishra.

Pakistan: Misbah-ul-Haq (Capt.), Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Haris Sohail, Kamran Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan, Umar Gul, Imran Farhat, Umar Akmal, Anwar Ali, Zulfiqar Babar.

Mohun Bagan suspended from I-League

NEW DELHI: Iconic football club Mohun Bagan was on Saturday handed a two-year ban from the I-League by the All India Football Federation for abandoning the violence-marred derby match against East Bengal on December 9.

The decision was taken by the I-League Core Committee, which also declared all of club's matches in the "I-League Competition 2012-2013 cancelled and considered null and void."

"The I-League Core Committee of the AIFF received the detailed Report dated 26th December 2012 of the Hon'ble Justice A K Ganguly relating to I-League Match No. 68 between Kingfisher East Bengal (KEB) and McDowell Mohun Bagan (MMB) played at Yuba Bharati Stadium, Salt Lake City Kolkata on 9 December 2012," the AIFF said in a statement.

"Justice Ganguly in his report has concluded that the decision of MMB for not playing the match after the interval cannot be supported on the grounds of Force Majeure and accordingly MMB has breached Regulation 22 of the I-League Regulation 2012-2013.

"The I-League Core Committee endorsed the decision of Justice A K Ganguly that MMB was in breach of I-League regulations and therefore in terms of regulation 22(c) the mandatory and automatic impositions on MMB (i) of being considered to have withdrawn from the I-League Competition 2012-2013 (ii) to have all its matches in the I-League Competition 2012-2013 cancelled and considered null and void (all points, goals scored and goal against being taken away); (iii) being disqualified from taking part in the next two (2) editions of the I-League Competitions; (iv) to return to the I-League any financial stipends that had been paid to it by I-League throughout the Competition 2012-2013 or forfeit the right to the same, are hereby notified to have been imposed upon and effective with immediate effect," the statement said.

The more than century-old club, the most famous in the country with a rich history behind it that was in some way also connected with India's rise in nationalism in the initial phases of freedom struggle, however, would be allowed to play in Federation Cup - India's premier knock-out tournament - and other domestic tournaments, including the local league.

Mohun Bagan will also not get a direct entry to the I-League first division and will have to come through the second division league, a top AIFF official said.

This will effectively means that Mohun Bagan will lose four I-League seasons, including the current one (2012-13) in which it has played nine matches before the fateful derby, as it will have to play in the 2015-16 I-League second division to qualify for the 2016-17 top division.

"Mohun Bagan's ban will continue till 2014-15 season and they can play in the 2015-16 second division I-League to qualify for 2016-17 I-League first division," I-League chief executive officer Sunando Dhar said.

Another top AIFF official said that Mohun Bagan cannot appeal to the Asian Football Confederation or the world governing body FIFA against the AIFF's decision.

"I don't think Mohun Bagan can appeal to AFC or FIFA. They can appeal to the AIFF executive committee. Of course, they can go to a civil court against the AIFF decision," the official said.

The Kolkata giants had refused to take the field in the second half of their match against East Bengal citing 'security fears' after their key player Syed Rahim Nabi was hit on the face by a stone hurled from the stands. The star India player underwent a surgery to set right two fractured bones, and will be out of action for at least six weeks.

The decision to ban Mohun Bagan for two seasons was the harshest handed to any football club in the country, old timers said.

"I have never come across any such long ban to any club in the country. There were bans on players and short ban, say one match or two match like that, never such a long ban. It is a bit harsh," one football expert said.

The AIFF said that the core committee will meet again on January 9 to assess the quantum of compensation Mohun Bagan will pay to the stakeholders, including the I-League sponsors, for the losses suffered by them due to the abandoned match.

"The I-League Core Committee also decided that in the subject matters of 'quantification of the amount of compensation', 'extension of the suspension, if any' and 'additional sanctions and fines, if any', a meeting of the Committee be convened on 9th January, 2013 at New Delhi and M/s. United Mohun Bagan Football Team Private Limited be requested to place its view points in regard to the factors relating to "quantification of the amount of compensation', 'extension of the suspension, if any' and 'additional sanctions and fines, if any'," the AIFF statement said.

"Consequent to 'McDowell Mohun Bagan' being considered to have withdrawn from the I-League Competition 2012-2013 and having all its matches cancelled and considered null and void (all points, goals scored and goal against being taken away), the revised Fixture with re-structured Point Table will be published as soon as possible," it added.

I-League CEO Dhar has been authorised to communicate the decision of the committee to Mohun Bagan and forward a copy of the report with it.

Mohun Bagan general secretary Anjan Mitra said, "I can't take a decision right away. Our executive committee will meet and take a decision to contest the verdict."

The suspension will hit hard on the big-spending club since it has some of the biggest players in the Indian football circuit, including the most expensive recruit Odafa Okolie and coach Karim Bencherifa.

An AIFF official, however, said that under rules the players have the right to demand the full salary for this year, but added that it's upto the club and the players to sort out the issues.

"The players can demand full salary but the AIFF is not into the scene immediately in this regard. The federation will can come in later," the official said.

Mohun Bagan, one of the oldest clubs in Asia having been established in 1889, is the most successful and high-profile club in the country with a legion of fans in Kolkata and other parts of the country.

Its rivalry with another Kolkata club East Bengal, with the derby between the two bitter rivals being watched by thousands of people, has been legendary.

The club was even linked with the rise of nationalism in Bengal and India under the British rule when it became the first Indian team to defeat a European team, when they defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 to lift the 1911 IFA Shield.

The win was seen as colonial India's supremacy over European colonisers and the day of the victory -- July 29 -- is celebrated as Mohun Bagan day since then.

Mohun Bagan have won National Football League -- the precursor to the I-League -- three times, Federation Cup 13 times, IFA Shield 22 times, Durand Cup 16 times, besides bagging the title in the Kolkata Premier Division League an unprecedented 29 times.

It, however, has not won the I-League since its inception in 2007.

Kohli achieves career-best T20I rankings

DUBAI: India's star batsman Virat Kohli has jumped five places to a career-best fifth position in the latest ICC Twenty20 international player rankings table, released on Saturday.

The latest rankings were released at the end of India's T20I series against England and Pakistan, as well as South Africa's three-match series against New Zealand.

While India levelled the two-match series against both England and Pakistan, South Africa won the three-match series against New Zealand by a margin of 2-1.

Kohli scored a total of 95 runs against England and Pakistan in the four matches, thereby achieving his career-best ratings of 731.

Yuvraj Singh has also moved up, jumping six places to 13th, following his 124 runs against England and Pakistan. He also climbed up a place in the bowlers' rankings list to 35th.

The combined batting and bowling efforts has helped Yuvraj, who was also named Player of the Series against England, achieve career-best 337 ratings points in the all-rounders' table, where he is placed third.

The other Indian batsmen, who have made upward movement, include Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 25th (up by three) spot and Ajinkya Rahane in 74th (up by five) place.

Meanwhile, the batting table continues to be headed by Shane Watson, followed by Brendon McCullum in second place and Chris Gayle in third.

Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez who scored 116 runs against India in the two matches at a strike rate of 165.71, has moved up a place to 19th with a best-ever ratings of 594.

Second-placed Hafeez also achieved his career-best ratings of 377 as an all-rounder in the series against India.

The bowlers' table, which is headed by Saeed Ajmal of Pakistan, saw India's Ravichandran Ashwin moving up two places to be at 16th with career-best ratings of 618 that he achieved against Pakistan at Ahmedabad in the second match.

India began the series against England and Pakistan at third place with 120 ratings points and had the opportunity to become the number one ranked team on the ICC T20I Championship table if they won all their four games.

But India's 1-1 series results against both England and Pakistan, meant that they retained the third place but for the loss of one ratings point to end at 119.

Meanwhile, England (fourth), South Africa (fifth) and Pakistan (sixth) retained its pre-series rankings on the table without any loss of ratings points.

New Zealand, on the other hand, gained one ratings point but continued to be eighth with 98 ratings points.

Pak attack more balanced than us: MSD

CHENNAI: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni rates the visiting Pakistani side, especially its bowling, quite high but feels the side which remains more consistent has better chances to do well in the one-day series, beginning on Sunday.

"Overall, Pakistan is a very good team. Its combination is such that they have specialist bowlers and have five bowlers for a match. In a way I feel they have complete bowling attack and they have experienced batsmen who can bat well in any conditions. Specialist spinners are also performing well," Dhoni said at the pre-match press conference.

"When it is compared to Indian team it is a very balanced side with talented players. Overall, which ever the team bats and bowls well for a long period of time will turn out to be well," Dhoni added.

Sunday will be first ODI match that India will play post Sachin Tendulkar's retirement and Dhoni said his immense experience will be missed but youngsters will get a chance to showcase their talent.

"If you look at the last one year or so, he has been picking and choosing ODI matches to play. Yes, We are missing him a lot. He has such experience and he always leaves a solid impact on the minds of the youngsters in the team in the dressing room. We all miss that. Also, when we look at important series afresh, youngsters need to get chances and perform well," he said.

Dhoni also made it clear that he is not a big fan of the new rules brought in the one-day format.

"I am not very happy with the rules. I feel that lot of changes in ODI has been brought in when lot of people talk about Test cricket and experiments made in T20," he said.

Asked for comment on the new rule that two bouncers could be bowled in a over, he said," Once we get fast bowlers like Umesh Yadav we will try to use it. As of now we will keep that in our pocket."

Talking about the media criticism after the Bangalore T20 defeat, Dhoni said, "It is not in our control. It is important that we attend to our job as to what we need to do on field."

However, he backed his bowlers, when India's bowling has been considered weak link.

"We have few young bowlers and it is difficult for them to bowl in dew factors and adapt to the changes in rules of the game. All these are to be taken in to account and we will have to back them as at the end of the day they are the ones you see in the future games."

He said young bowlers such as Parvinder Awana and Bhuvanesh Kumar needed a few more chances before being judged.

"We will have to give them fare amount of chances and see what set of talents that they have got and it will happen once they play few games at international levels. Domestic is quite different from international standards. They require more exposure and spend more time at the top level."

Asked about Pakistan's new pace sensation, Mohammad Irfan, he said, "He is a bit different. You can say that he is about one foot different to some of our bowlers. He gets lot of bounce and bowls at decent pace. We have to watch out for him. We have not seen much of him."

Dhoni also paid tribute to former English cricketer Tony Grieg, who passed away on Saturday fighting lung cancer.

"I did not have much chance to interact with him. I always used to hear to his comments right from the time I started following cricket, not to forget the instances when Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. He always used to make us feel as if we are watching the matches live at the stadium. He was really exciting. We'll all miss him and that is for sure.

Ashwin strikes to give India first wicket

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Desember 2012 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuvraj Singh removed Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shehzad respectively to rock Pakistan chase in second Twenty20 international at Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad.

Scorecard

Jamshed and Shehzad started off well, adding 74-run stand for the first wicket to lay the foundation for Pakistan.

Earlier, Yuvraj's career-best T20 knock could not have come at a more opportune time as it lifted India to a defendable total after being pegged back by three quick strikes.

Ever since Yuvraj arrived on the wicket, Pakistani bowlers bled runs as the left-hander plundered seven huge sixes and four boundaries in his 36-ball blitzkrieg to entertain a jam-packed house.

With skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (33) he added 97-runs for the fourth wicket as India put on board its highest total against Pakistan in T20s.

Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal bore the brunt of Yuvraj's fury as the Indian creamed four sixes off him with three coming in a row in the 19th over, which yielded India 22 runs.

Yuvraj was out in the last over off paceman Umar Gul, who was the most succesful bowler for Pakistan with four wickets at the expense of just 37 runs.

Earlier, India openers provided a fiery start, adding 44 runs inside five overs, but neither Gautam Gambhir (21) nor Ajinkya Rahane (28) could build on that.

The two openers were in good touch, driving and cutting elegantly. Rahane found boundries on the off-side despite facing a packed off-side field and also flicked confidently.

Gambhir was in much better form than Bangalore and his drives off Sohail Tanvir was a treat to watch but Gul removed both of them in space of two overs.

Gambhir departed after hitting Gul for three consecutive boundaries as he was foxed by a slower one. Gul returned and effected Rahane's dismissal with a catch in his follow through when the diminutive batsman miscued a pull shot.

Young fast bowler Mohammad Irfan was again impressive as he welcomed Yuvraj with a toe-crushing yorker.

The two quick wickets pegged India back, free-flowing runs stopped and pressure was on Yuvraj and Virat Kohli to wriggle the side out of the tight situation.

Kohli (27) too departed after getting his eye in when a confusion between him and Yuvraj resulted in his run out.

Dhoni arrived and meant business straight away, dispatching one from Shahid Afridi with a lofted drive to the fence. Yuvraj too started the fireworks, hitting a massive six off Afridi over mid-wicket to bring up India's 100 as India reeled off 17 runs in the 13th over.

Ajmal too got the same treatment by Yuvraj as one of his deliveries vanished in the crowd. Dhoni and Yuvraj continued in the same vein till the end and ensured the India have enough runs on the board to defend.

Dinda removes Hafeez to lead fightback

NEW DELHI: Yuvraj Singh's career-best T20 knock and Ashok Dinda late fightback helped India clinch a thrilling 11-run victory to level the two-match Twenty20 series.

Scorecard

India got a huge breakthrough when pacer Ashok Dinda dismissed Umar Akmal to break 62-run third wicket stand.

Skipper Mohammad Hafeez led from the front as he smashed 23-ball fifty, smacking five fours and three sixes.

Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuvraj Singh removed Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shehzad respectively to give Pakistan double jolt in quick succession.

India beat Pakistan to level T20 series

NEW DELHI: Yuvraj Singh's career-best T20 knock and Dinda's late fightback helped India clinch a thrilling 11-run victory over Pakistan to level the two-match Twenty20 series.

Scorecard

Defending 192, India held the nerve in the end as Dinda removed Mohammad Hafeez and Kamran Akmal in one over to restrict Pakistan to 181/7 in 20 overs at Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad.

Skipper Hafeez led Pakistan chase from the front as he smashed 23-ball fifty, smacking five fours and three sixes. Dinda ended Hafeez's scintillating 55-run knock to bring India back into the match.

India got a huge breakthrough when pacer Dinda dismissed Umar Akmal to break 62-run third wicket stand between Hafeez and the former.

'India owe its success to Gopichand'

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 27 Desember 2012 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: London Olympics quarterfinalist shuttler Parupalli Kashyap has defended national coach Pullela Gopichand, who was rapped by the Bombay high court for running a private academy, saying that Indian badminton owes its success to Gopichand.

"The badminton scene has changed in India only because of Gopichand. Now there is a proper structure, which was missing in the last 10 years. Gopichand has used his experience to bring about the change," Kashyap said.

"Before he took charge there was no proper planning, no physios or masseurs. I don't want to take away the credit from the national body but Gopichand has put a system in place," Kashyap said.

The Bombay high court earlier this month had pulled up Gopichand for running a private academy in Hyderabad. The court ruled it was "ethically" wrong for him to run a training academy while he was the national coach and in a position to influence team selection.

This was in response to a petition filed by Mumbai player Prajakta Sawant in November. Prajakta had alleged mental harassment after not being allowed to participate in the national camp.

India's top doubles specialist Jwala Gutta had also criticised Gopichand and has backed Prajakta. Kashyap feels the allegations against the national coach are wrong.

"I am very upset and it is very sickening. Gopichand has put in so much effort behind the players," he said.

'Bhuvi can become genuine all-rounder'

NEW DELHI: It is still early days but the coach who taught Bhuvneshwar Kumar the basics of cricket, says the talented India seamer could soon prove to be a cricketer of an ilk, who epitomises the value of a true all-rounder.

"His domestic records says it all. He is a genuine all-rounder and used to open the inning for our academy team. Now he has world class coaches with him and Venkatesh Prasad is the coach of UP team, so they can transform him into a good all-rounder," Rastogi said.

Bhuvneshwar had a dream debut in the first Twenty20 match against Pakistan as he claimed three wickets for just nine runs. That he gave away so less in his four-over spell made it even more special.

India, though, lost the match by five wickets, prompting the distraught 22-year-old to seek solace in Rastogi's comforting words.

"He was very disappointed that India could not win that match. I told him to concentrate on the second match and I am sure he will do even better tomorrow," the Meerut-based coach said on the eve of the second T20 against the arch-rivals.

When asked about Bhuvneshwar's inspiration, Rastogi said that he has learnt a lot from Praveen Kumar, who is also from Meerut, and former India skipper Saurav Ganguly while playing in the IPL for Pune Warriors.

"Praveen is also from Meerut and plays on the same ground. Bhuvi learnt a lot from him. Ganguly taught him how to handle pressure," said Rastogi.

Asked about his pupil's strength, Rastogi said that he swings the ball naturally and that too both ways.

"When he came to us with his elder sister Rekha, he was only 13. We saw his bowling and realised that he is special. His inswing was natural and he can swing the bowl both ways.

"His dedication and determination are his assets. He worked very hard to reach so far. He took five wickets in his under-15 debut. His best quality is that he does not get affected with the reputation of opponent and we have witnessed that in the first T20."

'Hope to play alongside Sachin in Tests'

AHMEDABAD: Young Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made an impressive Twenty20 international debut against Pakistan in Bangalore, hopes to play alongside Sachin Tendulkar in Tests.

Bhuvneshwar, 22, said he was shocked to hear about Tendulkar's retirement from ODIs.

"Yes, that's a big disappointment. When I saw his retirement news on the TV, I thought that I've lost the chance to play alongside him. But then I thought that I still have a chance to play with him in Tests. I hope that happens," Bhuvneshwar said.

Bhuvneshwar said swing bowling is his main strength like his mentor and statemate Praveen Kumar.

"Praveen Kumar and I are from the same city. I have been watching him since a long time and I think we're very similar bowlers. I look up to him as my mentor. Like him, my main weapon is swing bowling and I rely a lot on it especially in helpful conditions like this," Bhuvneshwar was quoted as saying the official website of the board.

Bhuvneshwar, who picked up three for nine against Pakistan, said he was nervous before the match but once the match started the nerves cooled down.

"I was told beforehand that I had a good chance. After seeing the wicket, the team management decided that I will play. I was happy but nervous too. They were normal debut nerves and nothing to do with the fact that it was against Pakistan. Once I entered the field, I was pretty normal."

Bhuvneshwar said it would have been a dream debut for him had India won the match.

"It would have been a dream debut if we had won. It was a good debut - scoring six crucial runs at the death, picking up three wickets for nine runs and taking a catch. It would have been perfect had we won in the end," he said.

The all-rounder said he was hopeful of selection after series of impressive performances in the domestic circuit.

"I was hopeful. I scored a first-class century and did well in Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy. I was hoping to get in as an all-rounder," he said.

Bhuvneshwar said Indian Premier League (IPL) stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore helped him learn the tricks of Twenty20.

"You can say that the time spent with RCB did help me in terms of knowing what kind of Twenty20 wicket this is. Overall, the IPL experience was useful because of what I learnt from the international players about bowling in T20s," he said.

Bhuvneshwar also thanked Mahendra Singh Dhoni for boosting his confidence.

"I have always watched him on TV and thought what a good captain he is. Before this game he told me that although I am playing for India and it's a big thing, at the end of the day it's just another match. You have played a lot of cricket matches and this is one of them. He supported me right through my spell as well," he said.

'Ishant and Kamran sort out differences'

KARACHI: Indian pacer Ishant Sharma and Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, who were fined after a verbal duel in the first T20 international at Bangalore, have buried the hatchet and are now the best of friends, according to a leading Pakistani newspaper.

'The Express' newspaper reported on Thursday that after the match, Sharma had gone to the Pakistan dressing room and sorted things out with Kamran.

"Sharma went to the Pakistan dressing room after the match and addressing Kamran asked him 'Paji Tauno Ki Hogaya See' (Brother what happened to you)," the report said.

It said that Sharma had than clarified to Kamran that he had not used any abusive language against him during the standoff in Bangalore.

"After that some senior players came in and sorted things out for both players who have now buried the incident," the report said.

The report also said that afterwards when the teams travelled on a chartered flight from Bangalore to Ahmedabad, Kamran and Sharma were seen laughing and in good spirits.

Outside the field, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli and some of the other Indian players get along well with some of the Pakistani players and some players also had dinner together, the report said.

Ishant and Kamran got into the argument when the latter was declared not out after he was caught off a no ball by the former, and was beaten on the next ball.

Soon both the players exchanged a few angry words and wagged fingers at each other. Finally, the ground umpires and Indian players intervened and separated both of them.

Pakistan manager, Naved Akram Cheema said that despite the incident, the relation between the two teams is good and cordial.

"All the intensity is on the field as obviously they also want to win as do we. But otherwise relations are fine between the two sides and we have been very well looked after so far in India," Cheema told Geo Super channel.

He also said that the security for the Pakistani players had been very good and they had been very well received and shown hospitality in Bangalore.

"The players are thoroughly enjoying their tour of India and the win in the first match has further lifted their spirits," he said.

'Dhoni should be rested from captaincy'

NEW DELHI: Batting great Sunil Gavaskar reckons that Mahendra Singh Dhoni should "take a break" from Indian cricket captaincy and Virat Kohli will be an ideal replacement as he can bring in the "necessary flair like Tiger Pataudi."

"It's still early days as far as 2015 World Cup is concerned but I believe that a break in captaincy will do wonders for Dhoni. I am not saying that it has to happen during the middle of a series but may be after the Australia series or later part of 2013. We need to have a look at that," Gavaskar said.

The legendary opener felt that a break might give Dhoni an opportunity to put things into perspective and reflect on his game and leadership.

"The break might be a voluntary one or an enforced break. But he needs time to reflect on his game and come back in a better way. I am very impressed in the manner he remains cool and unlike other captain doesn't clap and all but a little break won't be bad. Captaining India is a high privilege but the demands and pressures that come with it are incredible," Gavaskar told a news channel.

Gavaskar named young Virat Kohli as Dhoni's possible successor.

"I could be wrong but Virat Kohli might bring the flair of Tiger Pataudi in his captaincy. If he knows that he will be appointed for long term, he has the dynamism, the aggression, panache and class. I like everything about him apart from his mouthing abuses when he reaches a milestone. I don't want him to change anything else as he can bring a lot of dynamism."

When asked whether Dhoni could remain in the team only as a player, Gavaskar answered, "Why not? He can be part of the team for the next couple of years as he is a match-winner."

One of the most prominent voices of Indian cricket, Gavaskar questioned the logic behind the national selectors reportedly asking Dhoni for a blueprint of World Cup 2015.

"I am a bit surprised because the selection committee gets one year term and how can one be sure that they are going to be there in 2014 to prepare a team for 2015."

With reports emerging that coach Duncan Fletcher's contract may not be renewed after the Australia series, Gavaskar said that an Indian should be appointed in the hot seat.

"I would like it to be an Indian coach or somebody who is like Gary Kirsten. Kirsten had scored lots of runs in ODI and Tests and brought along a certain work ethic as he had done it all. If you have a champion cricketer, he can help you get better."

MSD blames loss on middle-order failure

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 26 Desember 2012 | 22.58

BANGALORE: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni feels the failure of middle-order batsmen to capitalise on the good start provided by openers led to the five-wicket loss against Pakistan in the first Twenty20 encounter on Tuesday.

Dhoni said India loss of wickets at regular intervals, after being in a strong position at 75 without loss in 10 overs, hurt the team badly.

"The batsmen got out trying to play big shots. We could have easily scored 200 if we had applied ourselves," Dhoni complained.

On the umpire not giving a decision in India's favour when Ishant Sharma had got Shoaib Malik (57 not out) caught off a ball which climbed a tad above shoulder level, Dhoni said, "It was a fair decision but I am not sure if you are allowed to refer it (to the third umpire) or not."

Asked about R Ashwin's omission from the playing eleven, Dhoni said, "Since we had three seamers we wanted to give Jadeja a go. At the same time we had other resources as well."

Pakistan skipper Mohammad Hafeez said the team played according to a plan and targeted India's part-time spinners -- Yuvraj Singh and Ravindra Jadeja -- who are not world-class bowlers.

"I know they are in good form, but they are not world-class spinners. And hence we planned to dominate them after seeing off pacers early on," Hafeez said.

Hafeez said after Pakistan lost three early wickets and were struggling at 12 for three in three overs, he and Shoaib Malik decided to play off Bhuvneshwar Kumar and other Indian pacers.

"Malik showed great character and we built a partnership," he said.

Hafeez had words of praise for debutant Bhuvneshwar, who had figures of three for nine in four overs.

"He bowled very well. He was swinging the ball nicely," he said.

Hafeez said his players showed a lot of character on the field, especially bowlers who restricted India beyond his expectations.

"Mohammad Irfan was our surprise package. I think he started off like one. Along with him, Sohail Tanvir also bowled well in right areas. Umar Gul also came off good in middle overs," he said.

Olympic flop show mars Indian athletics

NEW DELHI: Indian athletics slumped to new depths of shame by producing the highest number of dope cheats while continuing the flop show at the Olympics in yet another dismal year.

If 2011 was the year of worst doping scandals in Indian athletics involving six top quarter-milers, the year gone by brought another dubious low with the country producing the maximum dope cheats according to record books of the world governing body, the IAAF.

On the field, there were expectations that the 14-strong contingent would fight for a medal in the London Olympics but their campaign ended in the usual disappointing manner.

Most of them seemed to be just content making up the numbers and getting the Olympian tag.

What the able-bodied could not do was, however, achieved by differently-abled Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda, who clinched a silver medal in the men's high jump F42 event in the London Paralympics which were held just after the main Games.

Girisha, who has an impairment in his left leg, sailed over a height of 1.74m in the final of the event to finish second behind Iliesa Delana of Fiji. Though Girisha's barefoot scissor leap matched that of gold medallist Delana, he had to settle for silver for taking more jumps. F24 event was meant for athletes with an impairment that affects their arms or legs.

The 24-year-old son of a daily wage labourer from a little known town of Hosanagara in Karnataka became the toast of the country for a brief while with cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar describing him "an inspiration" for the people of the country.

Elsewhere, the woes continued with the sports ministry asking the Athletics Federation of India to amend its constitution and re-conduct the polls under the Sports Code to three top posts in two month's time or face de-recognition.

The unprecedented amount of money spent by the government for their foreign training and competition seemed to have gone down the drain as 14 athletes, except for two walkers, came up performances much below their personal best.

K T Irfan punched above his weight in 20km race walk by finishing 10th with a national record and he was rubbing shoulders with the lead pack in the event for a large part of it. Basanta Bahadur Rana also created a national record in 50km race walk though he finished 36th.

Only Krishna Poonia and Vikas Gowda could feature in the final round of women's and men's discus throw though the duo were well short of their personal best. They looked like shaping up well before the Olympics but failed to lift themselves during the greatest spectacle on earth.

Poonia and Gowda created new national records in the run-up to the Olympics with the latter topping the IAAF top performers chart for a brief while early in the season.

The seventh and eighth place finish gave Poonia and Gowda the distinction of only the sixth and seventh Indian track and field athletes to be in the final round of an Olympic event.

The likes of Mayookha Johny, Tintu Luka and Om Prakash Karhana, who shattered a 12-year-old national record in shot put just before the Olympics, came a cropper.

Renjith Maheswary was the worst as he returned with three foul attempts in the men's triple jump. Sahana Kumari brought up the rear in the women's high jump.

The poor performance of the Indian athletes led to the AFI mulling over participation by only 'A' standard achievers in Olympics besides also making special efforts to groom walkers for possible medals in future.

London no-show was no surprise as India are the perennial laggards in athletics at world stage. But what came as a shock was the country heading the IAAF list of dope cheats with 40 returning positive in the tests conducted by the IAAF and NADA in the last three years.

India has never won an athletics medal in the Olympics with just seven athletes having reached the final round of an event but it beat the top-ranked nations in doping with the country contributing 40 out of 204 dope cheats worldwide.

The list includes the likes of double Asian Games gold medallist Ashwini Akkunji who are now serving a two-year ban for doping.

A NADA disciplinary panel had handed a lenient one-year ban on the six quartermilers, including Akkunji last year, on the ground that they did not know that the food supplement they took contained prohibited substance.

That raised hopes that they could qualify for the London Olympics. But on appeal by the IAAF, the Court of Arbitration for Sports ruled, just a month before the London Olympics, that they should be banned for two years provided under the rules. They will now serve the ban till June-July next year.

The AFI drew flak for the London show as well as for the dope menace but another blow came to it at the fag end of the year with the Sports Ministry's notice.

The ministry was not happy with a provision in AFI Constitution that only an existing member of the Executive Committee should seek election to the post of President/Secretary. It also directed the AFI to re-conduct elections for the post of president, secretary and treasurer within a period of 60 days, or 28 February 2013, whichever is earlier.

Sachin to skip clash against Gujarat

MUMBAI: Sachin Tendulkar, who recently retired from one-day cricket, will not play in Mumbai's last Ranji Trophy league game against Gujarat but has made himself available for the knock-out stage if the team reaches the quarterfinals.

Mumbai Cricket Association joint secretary Nitin Dalal said that Tendulkar will not be able to play in the match which begins on Saturday at Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai as he is now holidaying in Northern India with his family.

"I asked him (Tendulkar) if he was available but he said since he is on a break, he won't be able to play (the Gujarat game). But he has made himself available for the knockouts," Dalal said.

Mumbai are placed third in the Group A points table, tied on 20 points with Madhya Pradesh. They will ideally be looking for a win against Gujarat or will have to at least secure a first-innings lead in order to be among the top three teams that will progress to the last eight from the group.

Punjab are at the top of the group with 32 points, but five teams are in contention for the remaining two slots.

McClenaghan returned 2-24 and Doug Bracewell 2-35, but South Africa's recovery set the visitors a challenging total to win the three-game series.

Ishant, Kamran fined for verbal face-off

DUBAI: The ICC on Wednesday penalised Indian pacer Ishant Sharma and Pakistan batsman Kamran Akmal for an altercation during the opening Twenty20 International between the arch-rivals in Bangalore.

While Akmal was penalised 5 per cent of his match fee after he pleaded guilty to breaches of Article 2.1.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, Sharma had to forgo 15 per cent of his match fee for the incident that happened in the 18th over of the Pakistan's innings.

After reviewing the evidence and the video footage, match referee Roshan Mahanama re-confirmed that Sharma initiated the incident, which was reported by all four umpires. Thus, a penalty of 15 per cent of the match fee was imposed on him.

"The game was played in the true spirit till this incident was initiated by Ishant, who is an experienced cricketer, which led to the umpires and his team mates having to intervene," Mahanama said in a statement.

The two got into an argument when Akmal was declared not out after he was caught off a no ball by Ishant, and was beaten on the next ball.

Soon both the players exchanged words and wagged fingers at each other. Finally, the ground umpires and Indian players had to intervene and separate the two.

1st T20I: Rahane falls after solid start

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 25 Desember 2012 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: India failed to capitalize on a terrific 77-run opening stand as they were restricted to a modest 133/9 in the first T20 match at the M Chinnaswamy stadium.

Scorecard

Umar Gul finished with 3/21 while Saeed Ajmal took 2/25.

Invited to bat, Indian openers started cautiously but they soon gained momentum and destroyed the Pakistani attach with big hits.

Ajinkya Rahane and Gautam Gambhir guided India past 50-mark in just seven overs.

Leg-spinner Shahid Afridi gave Pakistan first breakthrough by dismissing danger man Ajinkya Rahane in the 11th over.

Afridi got Rahane (42) caught at extra cover by Umar Akmal in the 11th over. Rahane's knock that came off 31 deliveries was studded with five boundaries and a six.

In the 15th over, Mohammad Irfan dismissed Virat Kohli reducing India to 103/3.

Indian skipper MS Dhoni was the fourth man to return back to pavilion after being bowled out by Saeed Ajmal.

"It is a new fresh journey and we are looking forward to do well. Conditions are not very different from Pakistan," said Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez after winning the toss.

"Dew factor, we would have looked to field as well. This is known as one of the good grounds to chase. This is a very loud ground, I don't think any voice goes outside the ground. I just wait for the fielder to look at me," said Indian captain MS Dhoni.
