IPL 6: Mandeep falls after steady start

NEW DELHI: Kolkata spinner Sarabjit Ladda bowled out David Miller just after Kings XI Punjab crossed 100-run mark to inflict fourth blow to the visitors.

Watch IPL Videos| Scorecard

Miller's dismissal reduced Punjab to 109/4 in 14.4 overs.

In the 13th over Lakshmipathy Balaji struck to get the wicket of danger man Manan Vohra after his 21-ball-31 that had steadied Punjab after the fall of openers.

Vohra was caught by Das at deep cover after a quick-fire knock that was studded with three boundaries and a six.

Kolkata's Rajat Bhatia inflicted second blow to Kings XI Punjab by getting rid of skipper Adam Gilchrist (27) to reduce the visitors to 67/2 in 9.3 overs.

Gilchrist, tried to recover from his lost form, but failed to make it big and got caught by Morgan while trying to hook Bhatia over mid-wicket.

Jacques Kallis gave Kolkata first breakthrough by scalping Punjab opener Mandeep Singh (25) after 45-run opening wicket stand.

Mandeep was caught Eoin Morgan after his 20-ball knock, studded with five boundaries.

Kings XI Punjab won the toss and elected to bat against Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL clash at the Eden Gardens stadium on Friday.

Kolkata have brought in a leg-spinner in place of Iqbal Abdulla. Azhar Mahmood staged a come back in Punjab squad in place of Pomersbach, while Gurkeerat Singh replaced Parvinder Awana.

With just four points in their kitty from seven matches, KKR need a morale-boosting victory against Kings XI Punjab to remain in the mix.

If KXIP find themselves in fifth spot on the points table, two rungs above KKR, it is because they have punched above their weight to snatch a couple of improbable wins.

The biggest advantage of KXIP is that, unlike KKR, their relatively "unknown" domestic cricketers have chipped in with useful contributions to pull off victories against higher-rated opponents.

Tendulkar hit on right hand at the nets

MUMBAI: Senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar was hit on the right hand while batting at the nets during Mumbai Indians training session ahead of their IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Watch IPL Videos

Tendulkar tried to cut a delivery from Jacob Oram, when the extra bounce caught him unawares hitting him on the right hand.

"I should be fine for tomorrow," the veteran said. His teammate Dwayne Smith also said the 40 year old should be fit to play in Saturday's match.

"He should be ok. Just a case of him getting checked up, but nothing is wrong, I think," Smith said in the pre-match media conference at the Wankhede Stadium.

Smith who cracked 62 off 45 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders in the previous game on Tuesday at Kolkata welcomed the chance to open the innings with Tendulkar.

"I don't think there is any pressure because I came here to open the batting so I get my opportunity to open so it is just for me to go out there and perform for Mumbai Indians. There is no pressure. It is the best position to bat in a T20 game actually," the West Indian said.

"Only four overseas players can play. We went with the best team possible at the start of the competition. I have got my opportunity now but since I have got a start, I wish continue and be consistent," he added.

Meanwhile, RCB's left-arm medium pacer RP Singh said the table toppers would be in a fine position to make the play-offs if they win just over half of their remaining games.

"We are confident but at the same time we are fully focussed towards game. Out of eight matches, we have won six matches, so we are in better position but still long way to go," RP said.

"We have played most of the matches at home and just now we have started moving out. If our success rate in the away games is more than 50 percent, then we will be in good position," he added.

He added that the bounce on the wicket at this venue will assist the bowlers to a certain extent.

"The wicket is a bit supportive. The bounce is better so as a medium pacer there is a little bit help," he said.

Asked about the fitness of senior pacer Zaheer Khan, RP said the bowler has almost recovered but the team management will decide on his return.

"He will definitely play. He has started bowling. Almost recovered. Hopefully we can see him soon. I think he had a side strain. Only the team management can let you know when he will play," RP informed.

'Luis Suarez victim of FA inconsistency'

LONDON: Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers criticised the Football Association on Thursday for punishing the man rather than the incident after striker Luis Suarez was given a 10-game ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

The Uruguayan international accepted a charge of violent conduct following the incident in the 2-2 Premier League draw at Anfield on Sunday.

After Suarez disputed the FA's view that it merited more than a three-game ban, an Independent Regulatory Commission met on Wednesday and added seven matches to the usual suspension for violent conduct.

Rodgers compared the punishment meted out to Suarez to two other biting incidents, including one involving England striker Jermain Defoe.

"It is the severity of the ban that has hurt most," Rodgers told reporters.

"That is something we are bitterly disappointed with - not so much the ban because everyone has seen it and Luis was very open and honest to know it was wrong.

"You can only compare it with similar incidents we've had. There have been two similar incidents both in 2006. One player (Defoe) received no ban and continued to be picked by the FA for the England team. The other player received a five-game ban. So when Luis receives a 10-game ban its hard to understand.

"I honestly believe the punishment has been made against the man and not the incident.

"I felt it could have been 12 games but with a six-game ban and six games suspended, looking at his future behaviour. I don't think anyone would have disagreed with that."

Liverpool have until Friday to appeal against the decision after receiving the written reasons from the disciplinary panel.

Luis Suarez gets 10-game ban for biting

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 24 April 2013 | 22.58

LONDON: Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was handed a 10-match suspension by the Football Association (FA) on Wednesday following his bite on Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic at the weekend.

Suarez accepted a charge of violent conduct after the incident in the 2-2 Premier League draw at Anfield on Sunday but disputed the FA view that it merited more than a three-game ban.

An Independent Regulatory Commission met in London on Wednesday to decide the Uruguayan international's fate and added seven games to the usual ban for violent conduct.

The suspension begins immediately meaning Liverpool's leading scorer will miss his side's last four games of the season and the first six at the beginning of next term.

Liverpool, who expressed their shock at the Commission's decision, have until Friday (1100 GMT) to appeal.

"Both the club and player are shocked and disappointed at the severity of today's Independent Regulatory Commission decision," Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said in a statement on the club's website (www.liverpoolfc.com).

"We await the written reasons tomorrow (Thursday) before making any further comment."

Suarez's bite on Ivanovic's arm at Anfield was missed by referee Kevin Friend but television replays showed him sinking his teeth into the Serbian.

WIDELY CONDEMNED

The 26-year-old Suarez, who was banned for biting an opponent while with Dutch club Ajax before joining Liverpool in 2011, apologised for the bite after the game and was fined a reported 200,000 pounds ($305,700) by the club.

However, he was widely condemned for his behaviour with some media suggesting he was in danger of being sacked by the club.

Former Liverpool player Graeme Souness said Suarez's latest misdemeanour had left him in the "last chance saloon" although the Merseyside club said this week that they wanted the Uruguayan to see out his four-year contract.

The FA said a three-match ban was "clearly insufficient" for the serious nature of the offence.

Controversy has followed Suarez since he joined Liverpool, with his antics often overshadowing his impact on the pitch.

He served an eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra last season and later angered United manager Alex Ferguson by failing to shake the French defender's hand before their league match in February last year.

He has also been regularly accused of diving to win penalties and free kicks, while in an FA Cup tie this season against minor league Mansfield Town he was again criticised for scoring a goal despite a blatant handball.

Until Manchester United forward Robin Van Persie's hat-trick against Aston Villa on Monday that secured the title, Suarez was leading scorer in the league with 23 goals - a record that saw him included on a six-player list for PFA Player of the Year.

Age is not a factor: Sachin Tendulkar

KOLKATA: A spell of shower could have turned Sachin Tendulkar's birthday celebrations into a damp squib but the 'Weather Gods' finally relented as the legend didn't forget to mention that "age is never a factor."

"Age should not be a factor. As long as I'm enjoying the game, my body and my mind are going hand in hand together, then it works."

On his own admission, Tendulkar had to use the knife close to 15 times on the day starting from a private function organised by the Mumbai Indians.

"It's embarrassing to keep cutting cakes... 40! I know. May be, I think close to 15 or so," Tendulkar said laughingly after cutting a 40-lb cake specially ordered by the Cricket Association of Bengal.

With his MI teammates cheering in front of their dressing room, Tendulkar sliced through the green-coloured cake, resembling a cricket ground with his signature "ST" bat place in the middle, while the cherry was also placed and the cake was fenced with stumps.

Tendulkar, who has got almost all the batting records to his name apart from Brian Lara's highest Test score, also rubbished talks about imminent retirement saying age should not be a factor.

"I don't think I'm 40!," he joked. "The moment you start looking at your age you start shaping accordingly," he said.

Tendulkar made his debut way back on November 15, 1989 in a team captained by Krishnamachari Srikkanth as he now plays against his son Anirudha (Chennai Super Kings) in IPL.

"It's wonderful now to have Chika's son ( Anirudha Srikkanth) playing against me (in Chennai Super Kings). Cricket is something that allows you to do something like that. Whatever happened to my life is only been because of cricket," he said.

Describing it a learning experience, he added:"It's been a terrific journey. First tour under Chika, was a tremendous tour and a learning experience for me. From there on, I've been part of various tours. The journey has been exciting. It's been a great learning experience."

Asked about his unbridled enthusiasm, Tendulkar said: "I've been always cared about the game. Always believed that how can I best prepare myself before a tour or a game. That's what I've done."

Tendulkar further thanked his billions of fans. "Once again I would like to thank everybody for the love and affection showered on me in the last 23 years. So many people are around. I can't find words to thank them.

"It's their love and affection which has allowed me to do certain things and express my talents in the middle. It's been fantastic to walk out in the middle with millions cheering."

Djokovic ends Nadal's eight-year reign

MONTE CARLO: World number one Novak Djokovic ended Rafael Nadal's eight years reign at the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday winning 6-2, 7-6 (7/1).

Djokovic, who had twice lost in the final to Nadal, won on his first match point to bring to a halt Nadal's 46 game winning streak in the tournament.

The defeat was only the second at the event for Nadal, with his first coming as a teenager in 2003.

Nadal, who returned to tennis in February after seven months out with a knee injury, stands 38-6 in clay finals, losing to only three three players - Djokovic (three times) Roger Federer (twice) and Horacio Zeballos (once).

Djokovic had been a doubtful starter this week with an injured ankle but played through the problem to lift the trophy, the 37th of his career and 14th at the Masters 1000 level.

Victory will enhance Djokovic's prospects of winning next month's French Open which he has never won.

Novak reaches Monte Carlo final again

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 20 April 2013 | 22.58

MONACO: World number one Novak Djokovic beat Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday at the Monte Carlo Masters to set up a repeat of last year's final against Rafael Nadal.

Fognini made 26 unforced errors and was jeered off the court at the end of his first Masters semifinal.

The Italian called for a trainer at 4-1 before continuing.

But he looked demoralized and on the next changeover he called the trainer again, pointing to his left shin as the trainer sprayed and taped it.

The Italian lost his serve again in the next game as Djokovic wrapped up the set without facing a break point and converted two of his four chances on Fognini's serve.

Fognini did not hang around and quickly left the court as boos rang down from the stands.

Nadal has now reached five straight finals since returning from a seven-month layoff following a left knee injury.

He will go for his fourth title of the season against Djokovic. The Serb showed no signs his right ankle is still bothering him, two weeks after twisting it on Davis Cup duty against the United States.

Djokovic and Nadal have not played against each other since last year's French Open final, which Nadal won. He has won their last three encounters, after Djokovic took the previous seven - all of which were tournament finals. Nadal leads their head-to-head contests 19-14.

Nadal subdues Dimitrov to enter semis

MONTE CARLO: Eight-time champion Rafael Nadal was taken to the brink by Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov before completing a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory on Friday to reach the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals.

Nadal, who made an unusual number of errors and looked uncomfortable throughout against his 21-year-old opponent, slowly ground him down and fired an ace to clinch his 45th successive victory at the first big claycourt event of the season.

The Spaniard now has a 47-1 win-loss record at the glamorous venue and will next face Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who beat Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the last four for the first time.

The straight-laced crowd, for once reluctant to support Nadal with Dimitrov threatening to pull off a shock win, stood up to cheer the 34th-ranked Bulgarian as he left the court after a thrilling performance.

Nadal had his share of applause after setting up a semifinal against Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who opened the a chilly grey day by the Mediterranean with a powerful 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.

World number one Novak Djokovic, still recovering from a sprained ankle, was scheduled to meet Finland's Jarkko Nieminen and seventh seed Richard Gasquet of France faces Italian Fabio Fognini in the other quarterfinals.

Pak to allow Butt, Asif to play post-ban

LAHORE: Pakistan will allow disgraced former captain Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif back into domestic cricket once they serve their bans for spot-fixing, the country's cricket chief said on Thursday.

Butt, Asif and team-mate Mohammad Aamer were banned for a minimum of five years by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after being found guilty of spot-fixing at the 2010 Lords Test against England.

On Wednesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sports rejected appeals from Butt and Asif. Aamer, who had pleaded guilty, did not appeal.

Butt was banned for 10 years, five suspended, and Asif for seven years with two suspended. Aamer's five-year ban was the minimum the ICC could impose.

All three were jailed by a British court in 2011 but were released last year.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf said Butt and Asif will have to serve their spot-fixing bans.

"They will have to serve it. Then we will include them in first-class domestic cricket and see how they perform," said Ashraf.

Butt on Wednesday vowed to revive his career.

"I have completed half of my punishment, so in 2015 I will be eligible to play and I am motivated and fit to revive my career," Butt told a news conference.

Ashraf said no player should ever fix.

"If he does, he will destroy his future and bring a bad name, not only to himself but to his country," said Ashraf.

Former captain Rashid Latif said Butt and Asif had a right to play after their bans "provided they are fit and have the will to play".

"I would have been disappointed if they were let off," Latif said.

West Indies' Marlon Samuels is the only player to return to international cricket after being banned for having links to a bookmaker. He was out of the game for two years, returning in 2010.

Warriors lose top order in chase of 120

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 17 April 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: After decent start given by openers Uthappa and Finch, Pune stumbled in their chase when T Suman and Steven Smith were dismissed in their IPL 6 match at Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune.

Scorecard

Uthappa (22) and Finch (16) looked in no mood to show pity towards the Hyderabad bowlers as they put up a quick-fire 38-run partnership for the opening wicket.

However, the party was short-lived when Thisara Perera struck twice in two balls to dismiss the Pune duo in quick succession.

Suman (12) was next in line to be dismissed when he was caught plumb by Karan Sharma after the Pune batsman put up 19-runs for the third wicket with Steven Smith.

Smith (17) himself could not stay for long at the crease as a mistimed pull shot off the bowling of Ishant Sharma saw the Aussie being caught by Ashish Reddy on the boundary rope.

Mitchell Marsh and skipper Angelo Mathews then put up 25 runs for the 5th wicket before Dale Steyn proved crucial in dismissing Marsh (14) when he top edged a fast delivery.

Earlier, a blazing bowling display by Pune Warriors India helped them restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad to 119/8.

Ashok Dinda and Bhuvneshwar Kumar rattled the Hyderabad top-order with an impressive display of a fiery pace attack.

Dinda gave the hosts the first breakthrough by dismissing opener Quinton de Kock (2) when the southpaw was caught in the covers by Mitchell Marsh.

The Bhuvneshwar Kumar show then began when he bowled an impeccable spell to dismiss Parthiv Patel, Cameron White and Hanuma Vihari in quick succession.

While Patel (12) and White (0) were comprehensively bowled, Vihari (1) got a wicked outside edge and was caught comfortably in the slips by Aaron Finch.

Spinner Rahul Sharma then joined the wicket taking party by catching a confused Karan Sharma (7) plumb and thereby ending a 24-run partnership that Karan had with Biplab Samantray for the 5th wicket.

Soon after, Marsh added further misery on the Sunrisers when Thisara Perera (2), in his attempt to play a cover drive, ended edging an outside-off delivery that was taken brilliantly by wicketkeeper Uthappa.

Rahul Sharma then added another wicket to his tally when he scalped Samantray, which proved elementary in breaking a 31-run partnership that the Hyderabad batsman had with Amit Mishra for the 7th wicket.

Samantray scored a run-a-ball 37 with the help of 3 boundaries and a single six.

Earlier, Pune Warriors India skipper Angelo Mathews won the toss and decided to bowl against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Ross Taylor, who captained the Warriors in the last match, is not playing this one and Mathews is back as skipper. On the other hand, Hyderabad skipper Kumar Sangakkara is out and the Sunrisers are being led by White.

Teams:

Pune Warriors: Robin Uthappa (wk), Aaron Finch, Manish Pandey, Steven Smith, Angelo Mathews (Capt.), Mitchell Marsh, Abhishek Nayar, T Suman, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, Ashok Dinda

Mishra hat-trick helps SRH beat Pune

PUNE: Leg-spinner Amit Mishra produced a stunning performance taking four wickets in five deliveries, including a hat-trick, as Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off an incredible 11-run victory over Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League on Wednesday.

Scorecard | Match in Pics | Hat-tricks in IPL

Mishra (4/19) took the wickets with his second, fourth, fifth and sixth deliveries off his final over as Warriors were bowled out for 108 in 19 overs while chasing a mediocre target of 120 runs.

The partisan crowd at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium was stunned into disbelief as Pune slumped from 101 for four in the 17th over to 108 all out in 19 overs as Mishra got his third hat-trick over the last six editions of the cash-rich league.

It was an inexplicable collapse as the home team lost as many as six wickets for seven runs in a space of 13 balls.

Mishra, who had earlier played a useful knock of 30, came into bowl the 19th over of the innings with Warriors needing 14 runs off 12 deliveries with four wickets in hand.

First it was skipper Angelo Mathews (20), who was fooled by a flighted delivery as he holed out in the deep.

Mishra then bowled three consecutive googlies to snap up Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma and Ashoke Dinda for noughts.

While Bhuvneshwar was trapped leg before, Rahul and Dinda were clean bowled as they misread the wrong'un.

A target of 120 was certainly not a difficult one as Robin Uthappa (22, 14 balls, 4x4) and Aaron Finch (16, 13 balls, 3x4) hit seven boundaries in the first four overs to relieve the pressure from the rest of the batsmen.

Although Thisara Perera dismissed Uthappa and Finch off successive deliveries, the target was always within reach of the home team.

However, the likes of Steven Smith (17), Mathews and Mitchell Marsh (14) all looked like getting set before playing some horrible shots when the match was there for Warriors to lose.

Sunrisers, thus, have registered their fourth win in six matches while it was the fourth loss for Warriors and one which could seriously dent the morale of the side.

Earlier, a clinical performance from the bowlers set it up nicely for the home team as Sunrisers managed only 119 for eight after Mathews opted to field.

Sunrisers captain Kumar Sangakkara dropped himself from the playing XI to make way for South African opener Quinton de Kock, but the move didn't pay off.

Team India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled an inspirational spell to grab three for 17 in his four-over spell as he polished the Sunrisers top-half within the first six overs.

His new ball partner Ashoke Dinda (1/25 in 4 overs) was also impressive as the duo put tremendous pressure on the top-order.

The slide started with opener De Kock being caught in the covers off Dinda. In his second and the team's third over, Bhuvneshwar cleaned up Parthiv Patel (12) and Cameron White off successive deliveries.

While Parthiv played inside the line for a delivery that held its line after pitching, White was foxed by the low bounce as the ball swung back onto him.

Hanuma Vihari (1) wasted seven deliveries before fishing at the eighth one and getting caught at first slip to give Bhuvneshwar his third wicket.

Sunrisers were tottering at 17 for four by the end of the first quarter.

Odisha all-rounder Biplab Samantray (37, 37 balls, 3x4, 1x6) tried his bit along with Karan Sharma (7) as they took the score to 41. It was leggie Rahul Sharma (2/21), who trapped Karan leg-before, to make it 41 for five.

The dangerous Thisara Perera was eliminated from the equation by Mitchell Marsh, as the Sri Lankan all-rounder edged one to Robin Uthappa behind.

Samantray's gutsy knock finally ended when he holed out in the deep to give Rahul his second scalp. It was Mishra (30, 24 balls, 3x4) and Ashish Reddy (19), who added 40 runs for the eighth wicket, that took the score close to 120.

In the end, Mishra's all-round effort proved to be decisive.
