Don't hound me like this: N Srinivasan

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 31 Juli 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: A defiant N Srinivasan on Wednesday refused to comment on whether he has taken over as the BCCI president again, bluntly telling the waiting mediamen to stop "hounding him".

"I can't reply, don't hound me like this," Srinivasan told reporters in Chennai when asked about his reported comeback at the helm of the BCCI.

There was intense media speculation that Srinivasan, who had stepped aside as the BCCI president pending an inquiry into the IPL spot-fixing scandal, had made a comeback to the top post on Tuesday evening though there was no confirmation.

There was no official communication from the BCCI on the issue yet. Some BCCI officials, when contacted, said they were not aware of any such development.

The Tamil Nadu strongman has argued that he can be back at his job now that the two-member internal inquiry commission to probe allegations of IPL spot-fixing and betting had completed its report and found no evidence against Chennai Super Kings and his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan.

The Bombay high court, however, had declared the BCCI's two-member probe as "illegal and unconstitutional".

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Cricket Association of Bihar, a division bench of justices S J Vazifdar and M S Sonak declared the two-member BCCI probe panel "unconstitutional and illegal", a development which has put a spanner on Srinivasan's return to the BCCI top post.

Unfazed by the Court order, Srinivasan had made it clear that he will attend the working committee on August 2 which is expected to draw up the future course of action.

The Bombay high court order has created a lot of confusion within the Board and interim chief Jagmohan Dalmiya has no clue yet as to who will chair the working committee meeting on August 2.

"Who will chair August 2 meeting? I myself do not know where is the chair... Let me first understand where do I stand... I do not have any information officially. This however does not mean there is some difference with the BCCI," Dalmiya had said.

There are indications that some BCCI officials are not too happy that Srinivasan has decided to attend the meeting which has again brought the spotlight on the Board.

"In view of the Bombay high court's verdict, it would be better if he (Srinivasan) shelves his plans of returning as BCCI president for the time being. He should wait till the matter is discussed and there is some more clarity," a BCCI official said on conditions of anonimity.

The working committee will take a decision on whether to immediately appeal against the verdict in the Supreme Court or wait till the police authorities complete their probe in the matter.

During the day, top BCCI officials had consultations on the implications of the Court order and the possible options that are available to the Board.

The IPL spot-fixing scandal broke out when India pacer S Sreesanth, along with two other Rajasthan Royals players Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan and 11 bookies, was arrested for alleged spot-fixing in the IPL.

The contracts of the tainted players were terminated by their franchise, which also lodged a criminal complaint against them.

It snowballed into a crisis for the BCCI when Board president N Srinivasan's son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings team principal Meiyappan was arrested on charges of betting on May 26.

A internal probe panel, originally comprising former judges Chouta, Balasubramanian and the then BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale, was constituted on May 28 to investigate the allegations against Meiyappan, who maintained his innocence after getting bail.

Srinivasan, who owns the CSK franchise, remained defiant through the turmoil and refused to resign but had to step aside as BCCI president after a stormy emergent Board meeting on June 2 where Dalmiya took charge of an interim arrangement to run the Board's affairs pending the inquiry.

The upheaval led to the resignations of Board secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke, who asked for Srinivasan's resignation on moral grounds.

Media gag on IBL contracted players

MUMBAI: Stung by the stringent criticism from some shuttlers over the way player auctions for the upcoming Indian Badminton League were conducted recently, the Badminton Association of India and the league's organisers have barred players from talking to the media.

"It has been decided that only BAI president (Akhilesh Das Gupta) and Ashish Chada (CEO of the league's commercial partner Sporty Solutionz) will issue statements. Clauses have been inserted into the contracts for officials and players," a top source said.

Controversy erupted after Jwala Gutta and her former doubles partner Ashwini Ponnappa, bronze medalists in the 2011 World Championship and title winners in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, lashed out at the IBL after their base price was slashed to half just before the start of the auction.

Jwala and Ponnappa were two of the six icon players who went under the hammer, but just hours before the auction, the IBL decided to reduce their base price from $50,000 (Rs 29,86,264) to $25,000 (14,93,125) after consultation with the six franchises.

In the auction, Jwala went to Krrish Delhi Smashers for $31,000 (Rs 18,51,520), while Pune Pistons bagged Ashwini for $ 25,000.

"When you sign a contract stating that you are an icon player, who wouldn't be sad or feel cheated or let down. I have promoted IBL like no other player. I have been to many cities to promote it. I thought icon players will be treated equally," a miffed Jwala had said soon after the action.

A couple of days later she said she was still happy to be a part of IBL and will let her racquet speak for her on the badminton court.

"The minimum thing we expected was to be informed. Nevertheless, I am very happy to be part of IBL. I am very much looking forward to it. Badminton court is my territory and thats where I will do most of my talking. I will let my racquet speak for myself," Jwala said.

Men's doubles specialists Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas too cried foul for being treated as "low profile players" and having their base prices slashed at the auction without being informed.

'BCCI panel illegal, against its own rules'

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court, which struck down as "illegal and unconstitutional" the two-member panel that went into spot fixing and betting charges in the IPL, has held that the commission was constituted in violation of the rules framed by the BCCI.

However, it refrained from ordering a new panel of retired judges to go into the charges against India Cements Ltd, owners of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, its former Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of BCCI's President-in-exile N Srinivasan, and Raj Kundra, co-owner of Rajasthan Royals.

It held that forming a new probe commission was the prerogative of the Cricket Board.

"The (probe) Commission was not duly constituted and was contrary to and in violation of the provisions of Rules 2.2 and 3 of Section 6 of the Operational Rules (of BCCI)," said Justices M S Sonak and S F Vajifdar in a 61-page verdict delivered yesterday which may thwart Srinivasan's bid to regain full control of the BCCI.

The court was hearing a PIL filed by the Cricket Association of Bihar and its secretary Aditya Verma challenging the constitution of the two-member commission set up by BCCI and IPL Governing Council after surfacing of the betting and fixing scandal.

The High Court order came just two days after the panel submitted its report on July 28 giving a clean chit to all those against whom the probe was conducted.

Armed with the clean-chit, Srinivasan was expected to reclaim his position in the Cricket Board after stepping aside for the duration of the inquiry.

"In our view the commission has been constituted contrary to the operational rules and it would not entitle the court to constitute a fresh probe commission at least (at) this stage and in this writ petition", the judges observed.

"The constitution of a probe commission under section 6 of the Operational Rules is the prerogative of BCCI. We see no reason to deprive it of the same at this stage and in this petition. BCCI is at liberty to take such steps as it deems in this regard", the Judges said while disposing of the PIL.

The court also rejected Srinivisan's plea for a stay on its order to enable him move a higher court in appeal.

The court said rule 2.2 of the Operational Rules mandated presence of at least one member of the IPL Code of Behaviour Committee on the Commission.

After the then BCCI Secretary Sanjay Jagdale declined to be a part of the panel, Justices T Jayarama Chouta and R Balasubramanian, two former judges of the Madras High Court, were left on the commission.

BCCI had selected five members on the IPL Code of Behavior Committee. BCCI is entitled to nominate additional people to join the commission. It, however, does not entitle BCCI to constitute the commission without any member of the IPL Code of Behavior Committee, noted the Judges.

BCCI counsel Rafiq Dada argued that the Cricket Board was compelled to constitute the commission without any member of the IPL Code of Behavior Committee as no such member was available. He defended constitution of the panel, which was contrary to Rule 2.2, on the doctrine of necessity.

The necessity, Dada submitted, was due to none of the members of the IPL Code of Behavior Committee being available to join the commission. Sanjay Jagdale, Ajay Shirke and Rajiv Shukla were not available.

However, the Judges noted that two others--Ravi Shastri and Arun Jaitely were also on the committee.

"There is no reason furnished as to why they were not appointed on the commission. There is no explanation why BCCI did not appoint them. The Respondent (Cricket Board) did not even ask them to be on the commission", said the bench.

Dada argued that Shastri travels to various destinations as a commentator and hence he was not considered to be member on the panel. However, the court disagreed with his contention, saying travelling to various destinations as a commentator would not disable him from discharging his functions as a member of the commission.

"After all, as mentioned by the lawyers, the commission sat on only one day and closed the enquiry on the same day. There is nothing to indicate that he could not have spared a single day", the judges noted.

"The most important point is the fact that Ravi Shastri's name appears on the IPL Code of Behaviour Committee and it must be presumed that he would be in a position to discharge his function as a member of the committee.

"It was not suggested that there were any special reasons why the other members of the IPL Code of Behaviour committee were not available on this occasion," the bench said.

Counsel for Srinivasan Iqbal Chagla contended that the petitioner was not entitled to challenge the constitution of the commission as being contrary to Rule 2.2 of the Operational Rules as there was no pleading to this effect in the petition. However, the judges held the submission was not well founded.

"We have already referred to the pleadings. In fact, BCCI did not specifically state in its affidavit in reply that the commission was constituted under Rule 2.2. We are left to infer this from the letter dated May 29, 2013, annexed to the affidavit-in-reply.

"The petitioner has alleged that the constitution of the commission was contrary to the rules and regulations. That is sufficient in the facts of this case to permit the petitioner to raise this contention. No evidence is required as far as the petitioner is concerned in support of this contention", the court said.

The judges further said that the petitioner was entitled to rely on the plain language of Rule 2.2 of the Operational Rules that mandates that at least one member of the IPL Code of Behaviour Committee must be a member of the commission constituted under Rule 2.2.

"Admittedly, the two learned Judges are not members on the IPL Code of Behaviour Committee," they pointed out.

It is the first respondent (BCCI) that seeks to deviate from this rule and take advantage of an exception based on the doctrine of necessity, the judges said.

"It is for the party relying upon an exemption or an exception to aver and prove that the facts justifying or entitling it to do so exist. The burden was therefore on BCCI to aver and prove that no member from the IPL Code of Behaviour Committee was available to be appointed on the said commission, the judges said.

"Respondent No 1 (BCCI) has not even averred anything to this effect. It has not even sought to establish the same except orally across the bar during the hearing," the bench noted.

"It must be held therefore, that the said commission was not duly constituted and was contrary to and in violation of the provisions of Rules 2.2 and 3 of Section 6 of the Operational Rules", the bench ruled.

The Judges further said, "in a matter such as this and in respect of allegations such as these, it would be neither safe nor fair to BCCI and Srinivasan to draw a final conclusion against them on the basis of affidavit evidence. Dada and Chagla's contention that this is a disputed question of fact is well founded. It is only in a trial that the court would be able to come to a final conclusion in this regard".

"These are indeed very serious allegations in a matter which is even more serious. On this issue the most that can be said in favour of the petitioner at this stage and in this proceeding is that it has made out a prima-facie case that Srinivasan was involved in the formation of the commission," the bench said.

The least that must be said in favour of the petitioner is that the respondents have not established that Srinivasan had no role to play in the formation of the commission, the judges said.

They said normally they would have relegated the petitioner to filing a suit or any other proceedings in which it can be ascertained with a greater degree of certainty whether or not Srinivasan played a role in the formation of the commission.

"However, in view of our finding that the constitution of the commission is not in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of BCCI, this may not be necessary", the bench said.

Arthur settles contract dispute with CA

SYDNEY: Former Australian cricket coach Mickey Arthur said on Wednesday he had reached a settlement with Cricket Australia over his sacking after he "significantly reduced" his claim for damages.

The South African had been suing for his job back or up to Aus$4 million (US$3.7 million), claiming there was a deliberate campaign against him and he had no choice but to take legal action.

After conciliation talks lasting more than 13 hours at the Fair Work Commission in Sydney, the two parties reached a "confidential agreement", the Australian Associated Press reported.

Arthur was ousted two weeks before the start of the Ashes series in England, with two years left on his contract, and was replaced by Darren Lehmann.

"I am very happy with the financial settlement we have reached tonight with Cricket Australia," he said in a statement.

"For me, this was never solely about the money. I just wanted to be treated fairly, and with dignity and respect.

"I have significantly reduced my claim, as it is being settled tonight and not dragging on at significant cost," Arthur said, adding he also wanted to protect Australia's cricket team from any further publicity surrounding the dispute.

Details of Arthur's case which were leaked to the media revealed divisions in the team.

Skipper Michael Clarke allegedly described his then-vice-captain Shane Watson and his faction in the side as "a cancer", and Arthur termed himself the "meat in the sandwich" between the two camps.

Arthur had also alleged discrimination on grounds of nationality.

He was sacked after Australia lost a Test series in India 4-0 and followed it up with a poor showing at the Champions Trophy in England. The tournament was marred by the off-field misconduct of batsman David Warner.

Under Lehmann Australia lost the first two Ashes Tests, with former skipper Allan Border lamenting the top-order batsmen as "embarrassing".

They must win or draw the third Test starting Thursday to keep the five-game series alive.

Anderson best bowler of this era: Akram

MANCHESTER: Pakistan great Wasim Akram believes England's James Anderson is the best bowler currently operating in world cricket.

The 31-year-old Anderson has taken 13 wickets in the first two Ashes Tests to help England into a 2-0 lead over Australia ahead of the third Test at the Lancashire paceman's Old Trafford home ground starting Thursday.

Anderson, whose tally of 320 Test wickets places him third on England's all-time list behind Ian Botham and Bob Willis, is currently only equal fifth with Australia's Peter Siddle in the International Cricket Council's Test bowling rankings, which are led by South Africa quick Dale Steyn.

But Akram, arguably cricket's greatest left-arm fast bowler, who took 414 wickets in 104 Tests at a mean average of 23.62, was in no doubt of Anderson's standing amongst his peers.

"Jimmy Anderson is leading from the front. For me he is the best bowler of this era," Akram told BBC Sport on Wednesday. "He does it consistently, with the new ball and the old ball."

Akram and Pakistan teammate Waqar Younis formed a highly effective fast bowling partnership in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with their command of reverse swing often proving too much for even the world's best batsmen.

In Anderson, Akram said he recognised an equally skilled exponent.

"Jimmy is up there with me and Waqar because of the control he has," said Akram, who played for Lancashire between 1988 and 1998.

"He was always good with the new ball, but with the old ball he is intelligent," Akram explained.

"He bowls five away-swingers, then one inswinger and takes a wicket."

Although Anderson's career average of 29.66 is more expensive than Steyn's 22.65, Wasim said the Englishman had the edge.

And that was despite Steyn having 33 wickets in five Tests at just 12.56 apiece in 2013 compared to Anderson's haul for the calendar year, which currently stands at 32 in seven at 23.12.

"I have seen Dale Steyn bowling with the old ball and he only bowls one delivery -- the inswinger to the right-hander," added Akram.

"Steyn is one of the best in the world as well, but Jimmy is slightly ahead because he does a lot more with the old ball."

Dawood Ibrahim named in chargesheet

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 30 Juli 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police, investigating the IPL spot-fixing scandal, named underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in their chargesheet and blamed IPL for lack of checks and balance.

The 6,000-page chargesheet named a total of 39 persons as accused for offences of cheating and conspiracy under IPC and provisions of MCOCA.

Sources said the three Rajasthan Royals players -- S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan have been named as accused in the chargesheet.

The chargesheet also claimed Dawood through Pakistan bookies controlled Indian bookies and the fixing racket in IPL.

The chargesheet questioned BCCI on the functioning of the IPL and said the atmosphere in the league was conducive for spot-fixing.

Bernie confirms no Indian GP in 2014

NEW DELHI: Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone on Tuesday confirmed that the 2014 Indian Grand Prix will have to be dropped to tweak the racing calendar and that he is working with event promoters Jaypee to have one in the first half of 2015.

Ecclestone, who has been the controlling the F1 empire for nearly 40 years, said from his London office that he and his Formula One management always wanted the India round early in the season.

"When we signed the five-year deal with Jaypee, we were keen on going to India in the first half and Jaypee wanted it to be in October. We gave in at that time, but now it looks we will have the race early 2015," Ecclestone, 82, said.

Shifting the Indian Grand Prix to early 2015 would mean the British magnate will not be celebrating his birthday in India for the first time in four years, assuming he will be here for the October 2013 race.

He said the 2014 round will not take place as it would be impossible for Jaypee to host two races within six months. As it is the hosts shell out $40 million (Rs 237.7 crore) for every F1 race at Buddh International Circuit (BIC) as licensing fee.

"It (hosting one race in October 2014 and another in early 2015) was too close. Therefore, after speaking to promoters, we think it is best not to have a race in 2014 and have one in 2015," said Ecclestone, who will present the 2014 calendar to the governing International Automobile Federation ( FIA) in September.

However, Malaysia hosted two races in a short span of time when it organised the last race of 2000 in October and from the following year onwards the round is being held in March.

Ecclestone said during the Hungarian Grand Prix last week that the Indian Grand Prix was unlikely to happen next year and the reason for it was 'political'. It is interpreted as teams not being happy with the taxation policy of India and the red tape involved.

Asked about the challenges facing the Indian Grand Prix, Ecclestone said: "There are issues that need to be sorted out in your country. I hope the organisers are able to deal with it at the earliest."

Having a race at the start of the season means India will have to be clubbed with Australia, and the Asian nations Malaysia, Bahrain and China.

Ecclestone did not specify how he would fit India on the 2015 calendar, merely saying: "We will have to club India with the four rounds in the Asia Pacific region."

The F1 czar has a possible 22 races jostling for space on the calendar with teams expressing a strong preference for a maximum of 20.

Russia is looking forward to its first race in the Black Sea resort of Sochi towards the end of next year, and a Grand Prix in New Jersey, US, is also planned for 2014. Austria is also keen on returning to the F1 fold after an 11-year break.

India first hosted a Grand Prix in 2011 and this year's race is scheduled for October 27 as the 16th round of the 19-event card. The two races in India have been won by Red Bull's triple world champion Sebastian Vettel.

The inaugural edition was attended by 95,000 fans while the number dropped to 60,000 in the second year.

"The second year is always difficult for the organisers. I hope bigger crowds turn up for the third edition," said Ecclestone.

Asked whether he would want Indian GP to continue after the five-year contract, Ecclestone said: "I really want it to continue, but it all depends on a lot of other factors. The sport is expanding its base every year."

Bernie confirms no Indian GP in 2014

NEW DELHI: Both Formula one boss Bernie Ecclestone and organisers of the Indian Grand Prix Jaypee Group on Tuesday confirmed that the 2014 India round will have to be dropped to tweak the racing calendar and it will now be held in the first half of 2015.

Ecclestone, who has been controlling the F1 empire for nearly 40 years, said from his London office that he and his Formula 1 management always wanted the India round early in the season, but the organisers preferred October.

"When we signed the five-year deal with Jaypee, we were keen on going to India in the first half and Jaypee wanted it to be in October. We gave in at that time, but now it looks we will have the race early 2015," Ecclestone, 82, said.

Jaypee, later in the day, more or less came around to Ecclestone's view. Sameer Gaur, managing director, Jaypee Sports International (JPSI), said that he would have preferred the race in the festive season, but if the F1 management wants it in the beginning of the season, he has no objection.

"October-November suits us weatherwise and it is also a festive season. But if Formula One Management (FOM) wants us to hold our race in March 2015, we don't have any problem with that," said Gaur. A JPSI source added that the decision was arrived at after prolonged discussions with Ecclestone.

As it is, the hosts shell out $40 million (Rs 237.7 crore) for every F1 race at Buddh International Circuit (BIC) as licensing fee.

Shilpa thanks well-wishers on Twitter

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 28 Juli 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Actress and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Shilpa Shetty on Sunday took to Twitter to express her happiness after her husband, Raj Kundra, was absolved of fixing charges by the BCCI-appointed two-member probe panel.

Reacting to the news after Kundra was cleared of all charges, Shilpa tweeted, "there is a God:) love u..and TRUTH PREVAILS. Thanku tweetos for all the unconditional support love and prayers."

The social networking site was also swamped with congratulatory messages from the well-wishers to the celebrity couple.

The panel was mandated to enquire into the roles of Gurunath Meiyappan, who was the team prinicipal of Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and its co-owner Kundra.

The panel found no evidence against India Cements, the company that owns the CSK, in effect clearing president-in-exile N Srinivasan's son-in-law Meiyappan.

This could also pave the way for Srinivasan's possible return to the BCCI fold as early as August 2 when the Board's working committee and the IPL governing council meet in New Delhi to take a final call on the issue.

Meanwhile, sacked IPL commissioner Lalit Modi also took to twitter to express his anguish over the BCCI's decision.

Modi wrote, "Seen the Bcci decisions. All I can say is i am glad i am not part of this lame duck absolutely shameless organisation anymore."

3rd ODI: Brian Vitori dismisses Rayudu

HARARE: A disciplined India notched up a convincing seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the third one-day international to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series on Sunday.

Scorecard | Match In Pics

Amit Mishra scalped four wickets and skipper Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 88-ball 68 to emerge as star performers for India as they guided the visitors to their third straight victory in the series.

Mishra led a disciplined show by the bowlers as they dismissed Zimbabwe for a paltry 183 in just 46 overs after Kohli won the toss and decided to bowl.

The visitors overhauled the target in 35.3 overs, riding on Kohli's fifty and useful contributions from Shikhar Dhawan (35), Ambati Rayudu (33) and Suresh Raina (28 not out).

Kohli, who had scored a match-winning 115 in the first ODI, once again led from the front as he starred in three useful partnerships.

He added 40 with Dhawan for the second wicket, before forging a 64-run stand with Rayudu for the third wicket, while it was the unbeaten 56-run partnership off 32 balls with Raina which finally took India home.

Chasing 184 to win, openers Rohit Sharma (14) and Shikhar Dhawan (35) made a watchful start as pacers Brian Vitori and Michael Chinouya bowled in tandem.

Sharma's poor run with the bat in this series continued as he was the first batsman to be sent back to the pavilion when he fell to debutante Chinouya.

Sharma chased a widish length delivery from the pacer only to edge it wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor. The Mumbaikar had scored two fours in his 21 balls.

Dhawan, however, didn't allow Sharma's wicket to affect the run flow as he blasted Vitori over square leg for a four and then pulled him for another boundary in the same area in the seventh over.

First down batsman Virat Kohli took one over to get a feel of the wicket and then brought up his first boundary in the ninth over when he whipped Tendai Chatara across the deep backward square leg fence.

Dhawan then cut one across the cover in the same over to pick up easy runs. The left-handed batsman welcomed Prosper Utseya with a four through the leg side in the 12th over.

His stay was cut short by Chatara in the 15th over when trying to hit a length delivery off the front foot, Dhawan ended up hitting it straight to Sibanda at shortish cover.

Runs dried up after that as Kohli and new man Ambati Rayudu (33) tried to steady the ship, picking up ones and twos. In the 22nd over, Rayudu picked up a much-needed boundary when his thick edge off Utseya went flying past slip.

In the next over, Elton Chigumbura was introduced into the attack and Rayudu and Kohli hit him for two fours.

After the end of 29 overs, India took their batting powerplay but Rayudu lost his wicket when he chipped a pitched up delivery from Vitori straight to the bowler. His 54-ball innings had two fours.

In the 32nd over, Kohli sent Chinouya sailing over deep square leg for a boundary, while new man Suresh Raina too cleared the midwicket boundary in the next over.

Kohli brought up his fifty in the 34th over with a brilliant drive off the front foot, which bisected the mid off and extra cover before clearing the fence.

Three balls later, the India skipper danced down the wicket and smashed Chinouya over wide long off for the first six of Indian innings.

In the next over, Kohli and Raina picked up a couple of fours as India inched towards the win. It was Raina, who blasted a four off Chatara to bring up the final runs.

Earlier, Mishra took four for 47 to help India dismiss Zimbabwe for 183. Mohammed Shami (2/25), Jaydev Unadkat (1/24), Ravindra Jadeja (39) and R Vinay Kumar (1/32) were the other successful bowlers for India.

Sean Williams top-scored for Zimbabwe with 45 off 53 balls.

Leading 2-0 in the five-match series, Kohli's decision to bowl was vindicated as his pacers struck twice in the first two overs at the Harare Sports Club.

While R Vinay Kumar accounted for Vusi Sibanda even before the hosts could open their account, Shami sent back the other-wise reliable Sikander Raza when he had the opener caught behind by Dinesh Karthik.

Hamilton Masakadza (38) and skipper Brendan Taylor (23) added 65 runs for the third wicket to stabilise the innings before Jaydev Unadkat struck with the scoreboard reading 67 for three in the 16th over.

The Zimbabwean captain, who stood his ground after Shami leapt to his left from mid-off to pull off a catch, walked back after the third umpire upheld the on-field umpires' decision. Taylor hit three fours during his 44-ball knock.

Taylor's dismissal was the beginning of slide as Zimbabwe lost three more wickets quickly, with leg-spinner Mishra taking two of them off successive balls.

Coming in to bowl his first over of the match, Mishra tasted success immediately as Masakadza, trying to cut a short of length delivery, edged it to the keeper as the hosts lost their top four batsmen within the first 20 overs. The batsman struck five fours off 53 balls.

Malcolm Waller was out next ball as Mishra had the batsman trapped in front for a golden duck with a googly, leaving the Zimbabweans reeling at 80 for five in the 20th over.

Ravindra Jadeja made it 89 for six as the slow left-arm spinner hit Elton Chigumbura on the pads with one that might have missed the leg stump because of the angle.

Williams then added 36 runs for the seventh wicket with Prosper Utseya (10), before the latter was snared by Shami.

Jadeja's flat throw from the square leg did Williams in as the batsman fell short of the crease at the striker's end after battling it out for 79 minutes. Williams hit two fours and a six during his fighting knock.

The Zimbabwe tail wagged before the innings came to an end.

India beat Zimbabwe to clinch series

Hamilton wins Hungarian Grand Prix

BUDAPEST (Hungary): Lewis Hamilton ended weeks of expectation and frustration on Sunday when he finally won his first race for Mercedes by claiming a dominant text-book triumph in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Formula One Stats

The 28-year-old Briton led from pole position to the chequered flag, apart from three short spells for pit-stops, as he secured his fourth victory at the Hungaroring in sweltering conditions.

The 2008 champion came home 11 seconds clear of Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and third-placed defending triple world champion Sebastien Vettel of Red Bull, who was unable to force his way into second place in the closing laps.

It was Hamilton's 22nd win of his career and a success that restored him among the challengers for this year's drivers' championship.

He is now fourth in the 2013 title race with 124 points behind leader Vettel on 172 and Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso on 134 and 133 respectively.

"It's an incredible feeling and I'd like to thank all the fans here," said Hamilton.

"My team did an incredible job, we studied a lot last night and were hoping the tyres would last.

"We had no idea it would go that well, but I was hungry for it today. I was going all out. Usually, I get stuck in traffic, but today I was going for every move I could. I wasn't having any of that..." "This has been one of the best and most important wins of my career," he added.

"To change teams and to win here for Mercedes Benz. This is a real privilege for me and I hope there are many more to come."

Raikkonen said: "I keep making my life difficult on Saturdays so we pay the price. I had a good car, we did two stops, it was tight with Seb at the end, but we gained some good points in the championship."

Vettel, who appeared upset by a brush with the Finn during their duel, said: "It was not the best race. The start was difficult and when Lewis pulled in we thought we could do it on the softs.

"But I damaged my front wing which did not help. I tried to hang on in there and tried to fight back with Kimi. I could not get him on the straight.... I told Kimi I was not happy, but he was laughing. That's racing."

"That was a brilliant drive from Lewis, he didn't put a foot wrong," said Mercedes team chief Ross Brawn.

"He has had an exceptional weekend from Saturday afternoon all the way through to today. We really didn't know how the tyres would play out, but this could be a good step for the rest of the year for us today."

It was the Mercedes team's third win of the season, German Nico Rosberg having won the Monaco and British races.

Australian Mark Webber finished fourth in the second Red Bull ahead of two-time champion Alonso and sixth-placed Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Lotus, who endured a familiar race of incidents and penalties.

Jenson Button came home seventh for McLaren ahead of Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Sergio Perez in the second McLaren.

Pastor Maldonado delivered the Williams' team's first point of the season by finishing 10th.

Hamilton's pole was his third in successive races that had seen him unable to exploit the advantage - a spectacular tyre failure at Silverstone wrecking his hopes while leading the British Grand Prix.

But this time, in Mercedes' 350th race as engine suppliers in Formula One, he enjoyed some of the luck that had been missing elsewhere to mark his 120th Grand Prix with a well-taken win.

Pacers can learn from Zimbabwe: Kohli

HARARE: Indian fast bowlers put up an improved show on Sunday but skipper Virat Kohli said they can still learn from Zimbabwe pacers how to use the new ball effectively.

R Vinay Kumar and Mohammed Shami, who came into the side after frontline pacers were rested, were pretty ordinary in the first two matches of the series.

Shami was economical on Sunday and also scalped two rival batsmen while Vinay Kumar took one wicket.

"Zimbabwe still have some inexperience in the (batting) line-up. Their bowlers have bowled in good areas. They know how to bowl on these wickets. They are using the two new balls well. Our fast bowlers can learn from them," Kohli said after India strolled to a seven-wicket win, which sealed the series.

Kohli yet again batted with responsibility as he made an unbeaten 68 in India's chase of 184.

The young skipper said he likes to take responsibility. "I am one of the few experienced guys in this side and I am trying to take responsibility," Kohli said at the post match presentation.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra was adjudged man-of-the-match for his impressive figures of four for 47 as he was instrumental in bundling out the hosts for 183.

Mishra, who is making a comeback into the Indian side, said he has worked hard on his googly with bowling coach Joe Dawes.

"My bowling coaches always tell me to go for wickets and not worry about runs. Whenever you take wickets, it puts pressure on the other side. I have worked hard on the googly with Joe Dawes. I have done lots of talking on it as well," Mishra said.

"There are a lot of upcoming players in the side and there is healthy competition," he added.

Meanwhile Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor said the results have been frustrating for his side considering the amount of hard work they have put in.

"It is getting quite frustrating now. Leading up to the series the amount of work we put in that is not translating into results. And knowing the ability of the players, it is irritating," a dejected Taylor said.

Taylor believes that there is lot play for in the remaining two matches and his batsmen would need to toughen up mentally to take on the Indian side.

"There is still lot to play for in Bulawayo. There have been soft dismissals and the guys need to toughen up mentally," he added.

Marin Cilic fails doping test: Report

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 27 Juli 2013 | 22.58

ZAGREB: Croatia's Marin Cilic, currently world number 15, failed a drug test at the April Munich tournament and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) is probing the case, local media reported on Saturday.

Cilic failed the test only two weeks after passing a doping control at the Monte Carlo Masters, the Slobodna Dalmacija daily reported, quoting "reliable sources."

More details will emerge next week as the 24-year-old Croatian sent his explanation to the ITF, the daily said.

"There are no comments until we will be able to comment," the influential Jutarnji List daily quoted Cilic's manager Vincent Stavaux as saying.

Cilic's test was allegedly positive due to "incautious use of glucose," the daily reported.

Local media said that Cilic had found out about the positive results of the test during Wimbledon, adding that this was the reason the 24-year old withdrew from the match against France's Kenny de Schepper.

At the time it was reported that Cilic withdrew from the match due to his left knee injury.

Reports on Cilic's alleged positive test came out only two days after the ITF banned Serbia's Viktor Troicki for 18 months for flouting doping rules.

Troicki, 27, was found guilty of failing to provide a blood sample during a drugs test at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Serbian, currently at 53 in the world, said he would appeal his ban.

India can field two national teams: Borde

NOIDA: Former India captain Chandu Borde said India has such an abundance of cricket talent today that it can easily field two national squads of equal strength.

"We have so much talent in our country today that we can easily field two teams," Borde said while inaugurating a cricket academy named after him at a school here.

"Indian cricket has a very bright future," he added.

The Chandu Borde Global Cricket Academy at the Global Indian International School (GIIS) campus in Noida is the third such in the GIIS network in India, the other two being in the GIIS campuses in Indore and Surat.

According to Borde, fielding is one area where Indian players have improved vastly.

"In our days we did not have anybody training us specifically in fielding," the veteran of 55 Test matches, who was known for his fielding skills during his playing days, said.

"Nowadays with support staff training players specifically in fielding, our players are living up to their standards," he said.

Former Indian Test opening batsman Chetan Chauhan, who was the guest of honour at the inauguration, said the Indian Premier League (IPL) too had helped improve the fielding of the Indian players.

"Nobody today hesitates to dive, take a tumble, attack the ball while fielding," he said.

Asked whether selecting an India team is easier today given the talent, Borde, who has served as the chairman of the national selection committee twice, said that the job of the selectors during his time and now remained the same.

"However, players nowadays get more opportunities to showcase their talent because of the league system in the Ranji Trophy. In our days, it was knockout format, not many players could get more than one opportunity prove themselves," he said.

According to him, the academies like the one he inaugurated Saturday are also helping in grooming young talent in the country.

"During our days, we used to play on the school grounds. But nowadays, because of the accent on construction of buildings, very few schools have big sports grounds," Borde said.

"That is where the academies come in to help in spotting and grooming young talent. It is good that many former cricketers, including Ranji (Trophy) players, are associated with schools and colleges in one way or the other to develop the game," he remarked.

Chauhan, who is also vice-president of the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA), said the infusion of big money in cricket today helped spread the game to far-flung areas of the country.

"Previously, international cricket meant players mainly from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Madras (now Chennai) and Kolkata. Nowadays, the Indian team has players from many small cities," he said.

To a specific query on the ongoing debate about the BCCI being brought under the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Chauhan said all sports bodies in the country should be brought under the RTI.

"Why just BCCI, all sports bodies in the country should be brought under the RTI. After all, these bodies are run with public funds. But then, that is my personal view and not that of the DDCA," he said.

Lewis edges Vettel to Hungarian GP pole

BUDAPEST: Lewis Hamilton scorched to a surprise pole for the Hungarian Grand Prix in searing heat on Saturday, the Mercedes driver edging out defending champion and season leader Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton bagged his third consecutive pole and fourth of the season with a best lap of 1min 19.388sec with Red Bull's Vettel timing 1.19.426 for a margin of 0.038sec.

Frenchman Romain Grosjean in a Lotus was third fastest to take his place on the second row of the grid.

It was 2008 champion Hamilton's fourth pole at the Hungaroring circuit.

The 28-year-old Briton pulled off his fastest lap right at the conclusion of a closely-fought session, having spent Friday battling handling and balance problems with the new Pirelli tyres.

His rivals had been able to test the tyres at Silverstone, where Mercedes were banned from running last week.

Hamilton admitted: "With the temperatures, it was pretty tough. I was really surprised when I came across the line and they said I got pole. I didn't feel like that was a great lap.

"I thought Sebastian had got it. I'm really surprised, I thought maybe he made a mistake or something.

"We brought some upgrades this weekend, the guys are working hard and it's a result of all hard work they've put in.

"Starting on pole definitely helps as it's difficult to follow here. It's a long way down to Turn One, but if you can get there first and try and hold position, it's definitely advantageous.

"But these guys (Vettel and Grosjean) are going to be ridiculously fast so trying to keep in front or holding onto them is going to be the challenge."

Hamilton's latest gambit in temperatures hitting 35 degrees Celsius at the start with track temperature reaching 50 degrees lifted him beyond five-time champion Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio to a career total of 30 poles.

After squeezing defending triple world champion Vettel out Hamilton had on his slowing down lap asked his team: ""Are we on pole?" The response from his care engineer was: "Yeah - and we are as surprised as you, mate!" Team chief Ross Brawn said simply, "brilliant job, Lewis."

Vettel praised Hamilton.

"Lewis did an exceptional job today - you have to hand it to him."

But the German, seeking a first career win in Hungary, stressed: "I am still in a good position for tomorrow and we have a good car for the race.

"I was pretty happy with both laps because I had two sets of new tyres, but maybe I wasn't aggressive enough in the middle."

Grosjean said: "I like this circuit, but that's not important. It's been a good weekend, we've been working hard with the team trying to get the best out of the car and the last lap was pretty good.

"The race is very long and it'll be very hot, but we will see what we can do to get the best result."

German Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes was fourth fastest ahead of two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, who outpaced 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen in the second Lotus, Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Daniel Ricciardo of Toro Rosso.

Mexican Sergio Perez recovered from a crash in morning practice to take ninth place for McLaren ahead of Mark Webber who sat out the session for Red Bull after yet another KERS failure.

Briton Jenson Button, the 2009 champion, qualified 13th.

Sledging sparks more trouble for Warner

PRETORIA (Gauteng): Controversial Australian batsman David Warner had to be separated from South Africa A wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile during his 33-run second innings on Saturday.

The umpires intervened twice at LC de Villiers Oval in South African Highveld city Pretoria after sledging between the pair became heated for the second consecutive day.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld pulled Tsolekile away from Warner as the war of words boiled over on the final day of a four-day match staged in warm mid-winter conditions.

Warner failed to match his superb 193-run first innings, but hit six fours off 53 balls before being caught by Tsolekile off the bowling of Beuran Hendricks.

Left-handed batsman Warner was axed from the Ashes tour for punching England batsman Joe Root in a Birmingham bar after a Champions Trophy game between the countries.

He was told to join an Australia A tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa to "get match practice and runs in the longer format of the game".

Warner did not start impressively, managing innings of only eight and 11 in an 80-run victory over a Zimbabwe XI in Harare.

But his 193 heightened speculation that he might be recalled by Australia, who trail England 2-0 in the five-Test series after a series of woeful batting performances.

The Pretoria match was drawn after Australia A made 474-5 declared and 254-6 and South Africa A compiled 614-7 declared.

Pellegrini picks up first City silverware

HONG KONG: Manuel Pellegrini picked up his first piece of silverware as Manchester City manager on Saturday in Hong Kong, but it came at a potential cost with centre-half Matija Nastasic stretchered off.

Edin Dzeko's spectacular volley from outside the box on nine minutes -- his second goal in two games -- was enough to edge City past a dogged Sunderland 1-0 and give them the Barclays Asia Trophy.

But the dire condition of the pitch at the 40,000 sell-out Hong Kong Stadium -- where Manchester United play on Monday -- will again come under the spotlight after the Serbian Nastasic became the second Premier League player to fall victim to the treacherous conditions after days of heavy rain.

Key Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen faces a race to be fit for the start of the Premier League season in three weeks after injuring his ankle in a 3-1 defeat to Sunderland at the same venue on Wednesday.

There was no immediate information as to the seriousness of Nastasic's injury.

Earlier, a ruthless Spurs eased to a 6-0 romp over a hopelessly outclassed South China with Jermain Defoe scoring a hat-trick.

In front of a watching Manchester United manager David Moyes, Defoe made light work of an awkward surface that had large amounts of sand thrown on it and had players slipping and sliding dangerously.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said he was pleased to come through the fixture with no more injuries.

"Everything was perfect today and I am extremely happy by the way we finished (the tournament)," he said.

"Today was much better, not only physically, but also the football we played was really pleasant," added the Portuguese, who again refused to say if Spurs had received any offers for star man Gareth Bale, reportedly the subject of intense interest from Real Madrid.

Bale did not play any part in Hong Kong because of a muscle strain but is only days away from a return.

"We really played well throughout," said Villas-Boas. "The full-backs played excellent and kept pushing forward, both (Kyle) Walker and Danny (Rose). It was good to see Defoe coming back to this level of a deadly striker, while also assisting, which shows an unselfish part of his game, which is really good."

Clint Dempsey -- set up by Defoe -- and substitute Andros Townsend also scored, after an own-goal had put Tottenham on their way.

Jadeja scalps Williams, Zim 4 down

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 26 Juli 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra ended Hamilton Masakadza's fight in the 29th over, giving fifth blow to Zimbabwe at the score of 130 in the second ODI at Harare on Friday.

Scorecard | Match in Pics

Masakadza scored 34 before getting caught by Mohammad Sami at short fine leg.

Chasing a massive 295, Zimbabwe got off to a steady start before Jaydev Unadkat struck in the 11th over to inflict first jolt to them at the score of 45 by removing Sikandar Raza.

Indian bowlers then toiled hard against Sibanda, who notched up 57-ball fifty to lead Zimbabwe chase. He smashed seven fours and two sixes in his 19th ODI fifty.

However, in the 21st over, Unadkat struck again to end Sibanda's (55) challenge. Zimbabwe suffered another jolt in the same over when Brendan Taylor got run-out for nought.

Ravindra Jadeja then struck on the first delivery of the 27th over to trap Sean Williams (5) leg before, giving Zimbabwe fourth blow at the score of 127.

Earlier, opener Shikhar Dhawan capitalised on sloppy bowling and fielding by the Zimbabweans to hit his third ODI century as India recovered from early jolts to post a daunting 294 for eight.

Dhawan, who got at least three lives, struck 116 from 127 balls and shared 167 runs with Dinesh Karthik (69) for the fifth wicket to take India to a big total after they were reduced to 65 for four in the 17th over at the Harare Sports Club.

The Zimbabweans, who put the visitors in, spilled regulation catches and their wayward bowlers conceded 28 extras. Dhawan was dropped twice when on 14 and 70 and the Indian also benefited from a no-ball by Kyle Jarvis in the fifth over when he had added just three runs to his name.

The 27-year-old Indian, however, hung on and hit his third ODI ton in his 17th match to save the Indians the blushes. He hit 11 fours and two sixes.

Karthik played his part with a composed 74-ball innings which was studded with six fours as the duo denied the Zimbabweans any success for 25.4 overs.

India ended their innings in style with tail-enders Vinay Kumar (27 not out) and Mohammed Shami (6 not out) scoring 23 from the last over with the help of three sixes and a four.

Captain Virat Kohli, who hit a match-winning hundred in the first match two days ago, could only score 14 runs while the other opener Rohit Sharma (1), Ambati Rayudu (5), Suresh Raina (4) and Ravindra Jadeja (15) were also out cheaply.

The Indian innings was marred by Kohli's face-off with on-field umpires after he was given out to a controversial catch in the seventh over. He stood his ground even as Zimbabwe sought a review as the fielder -- Malcolm Waller -- was not sure whether he had caught the ball cleanly or not.

Kohli refused to leave even after the third umpire adjudged him out. He argued his case once again with the umpires who confirmed the decision. Eventually, a visibly upset Kohli reluctantly walked back to the pavilion.

All Zimbabwean bowlers were expensive except for Brian Vitori who had figures of 2/27 from eight overs.

India suffered an early jolt with opener Rohit being dismissed in the second over as pacer Brian Vitori got his scalp in his first ball. Rohit went for a drive to a delivery just outside the off-stump only to find an edge for Vusi Sibanda to take the catch.

Dhawan was out when on three in the fifth over but survived as it turned out that Jarvis had bowled a no-ball. Then he was dropped on 14 in the ninth over with captain Brendan Taylor spilling a regulation catch, the unfortunate bowler being Jarvis. India were 38 for two then.

Rayudu, who came in at the fall of Kohli, was also dropped in the 10th over when the batsman was on three as Vitori spilled a caught and bowled chance.

India lost two quick wickets as Rayudu and Suresh Raina were out in the 14th and 17th overs respectively. Rayudu ended his struggle as he went for a drive without moving his feet while Raina also continued with his poor run in form as he was caught behind by Taylor. Rayudu consumed 25 balls for his five runs while Raina made just four from 11 balls.

Dhawan and Karthik then played the rescue act with a solid stand. They kept the scoreboard ticking by taking singles and rotating strike in the middle overs.

India took the batting powerplay in the 33rd over and scored 85 runs from the 10 overs to go past 200 in the 40th over.

Karthik and Dhawan were in full flow at that stage though the former survived a dropped catch. The duo took 13 runs each from the 40th and 42nd overs bowled by Prosper Utseya and Vitori respectively.

After Karthik and Dhawan were out in quick succession in the 43rd and 44th overs respectively, the lower order ensured that India go near the 300-run mark.

Zimbabwe crumble in chase of 295

NEW DELHI: Riding high on a brilliant century by Shikhar Dhawan and disciplined show by the bowlers, India thrashed Zimbabwe by 58 runs in the second ODI to take 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series at Harare on Friday.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra ended Hamilton Masakadza's fight and then dismissed Malcom Waller in quick succession to leave Zimbabwe six down for just 130.

Elton Chigumbura (46) and Prosper Utseya (52*) then shared 88-run partnership for the seventh wicket. However after the wicket of Chigumbura, Zimbabwe lost two more wickets in quick succession, making road to victory easy for India.

India maul Zimbabwe, take 2-0 lead

NEW DELHI: Shikhar Dhawan capitalised on three reprieves to slam his third ODI century as India maintained their stranglehold over minnows Zimbabwe with a comfortable 58-run victory in the second cricket one-dayer on Friday.

Scorecard | Match in Pics

Dhawan struck 116 as India recovered from early jolts to post a competitive 294 for eight and then restricted the hosts to 236 for nine to take a 2-0 series lead in the five-match series.

Put into bat, India were in a spot of bother at 65 for four at one stage before Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik (69) put on 167 runs for the fifth wicket to not only restore the innings but take them to a commanding total at the Harare Sports Club.

The Indians could have won the match by a much bigger margin but a defiant late-order resistance by Elton Chigumbara (46) and Prosper Utseya (52 not out) delayed the inevitable with the duo adding 88 runs for the seventh wicket to frustrate the tourists.

Opener Visu Sibanda (55) also provided a rollicking start to the Zimbabwean innings which somehow lost the momentum after his departure with five wickets falling within a span of 24 runs.

For India, Jaydev Unadkat was the pick of the bowlers with four for 41 while leg-spinner Amit Mishra accounted for two wickets.

The two teams will play the third match of the series at the same venue here on Sunday.

Zimbabwe lost opener Sikandar Raza (20) early into their run-chase as the Pakistan-born batsman, who had top-scored with 82 in the first one-dayer, went for an expensive pull-shot against Unadkat and was holed out in the deep.

Next man-in, Hamilton Masakadza and Sibanda chose to play a more patient game and rotated the strike cleverly before opening up against Vinay Kumar's medium-pace and Mishra's googlies.

Both hit Mishra early on in his spell for a six each while Kumar was pulled for two boundaries in the opening over and was taken for 16 runs in his return over in the second spell as the second-wicket partnership looked threatening on an eased out pitch.

Sibanda reached his individual fifty with a hit off Mishra over long-on for six and, in the process, also took his side's total past 100-run mark. However, Zimbabwe could not hold onto their strong position for long as Sibanda once again failed to covert his innings into a big score after dominating the Indian bowlers with his powerful hits.

Sibanda, who had escaped with a missed stumping chance after running down the pitch to Mishra, threw away his wicket and fell to Unadkat in the 21st over. His 57-ball 55 knock was laced with seven fours and two sixes.

Four balls later, Brendan Taylor (nought) ran himself out as from 109 for one, it became 109 for three for the hosts.

Zimbabwe's misery further compunded when Ravindra Jadeja had Sean Williams (5) trapped right in front of the stumps.

Next over saw the soft dismissal of Masakadza who ended up giving a simple catch to Mohammed Shami at short fine-leg going for a sweep shot. Masakadza scored 47-ball 34 which had one six over the deep midwicket.

Malcolm Waller (2) fell for Mishra's deceptive googly as the dismissal left the run chase in tatters.

Chigumbara and Utseya waged a lonely battle and showed some resistance but their efforts did not prove enough in the end.

Earlier, the Zimbabweans spilled regulation catches and their wayward bowlers conceded 28 extras as India posted a daunting target.

Dhawan was dropped twice when on 14 and 70 and the Delhi-lad also benefited from a no-ball by Kyle Jarvis in the fifth over when he had added just three runs to his name.

The 27-year-old, however, hung on and hit his third ODI ton in his 17th match to save the Indians the blushes. He hit 11 fours and two sixes.

Expert ridicules idea of IPL-style league

MUMBAI: Footballer-turned-analyst Paul Masefield on Friday criticised All India Football Federation's idea of holding an IPL-style league, saying that it can have an adverse impact on the development of the game in the country.

"This is a ridiculous idea that could have a real negative and adverse effect on Indian football and the I-League, in particular. This isn't cricket. It's football. You can't do it with football. You can do it with cricket. It's great," the former English professional said.

The AIFF and its marketing partner IMG-Reliance have proposed to hold a city-based franchise league on the lines of popular Indian Premier League in cricket.

But the proposal has met with opposition from the I-League clubs who have decided not to release any of their players for the proposed tournament.

"It's nonsense. I do believe it makes a mockery of the I-League. If you see the way some of the teams have done and gone through ... Trevor Morgan (coach of Kingfisher East Bengal) has done a fantastic job. I have watched them play this year in AFC Cup. They have developed. Now all of a sudden you have a tournament that is 70 days or three months (long)," he said.

"It's not going to help fund the I-League. Why don't they go in and help fund the I-League? That would be more beneficial - by giving the money there, filtering down to the teams, paying the players more, making it more viable. So for me, it's nonsense. I wouldn't agree with that league at all."

Masefield, who was recently appointed technical director of Mumbai-based Kooh Sports Football Development Centre, pointed out that a similar thing happened in Indonesia with two domestic leagues in place -- the Indonesian Premier League and the Indonesia Super League -- and it threatened the sport in that country.

"Look what happened in Indonesia with the split. They have got major problems with two leagues running and it is only by the grace of God that FIFA hasn't sanctioned them.

"I think there would be repercussions. Is it going to be a split league? Is it going to be sanctioned by AIFF? If it is, then later down the line if there is a fallout, then what happens then?" he asked.

"It's wrong. It's a two-month league. You need one league and 8-9 months (of duration). That is how you roll it out. It's something that I don't agree with. The I-League was here well before IMG-Reliance and all that. Unfortunately, all this is about money and I think it would have an adverse effect on the I-League," Masefield said.

Masefield, who was a part of the Birmingham City squad in the late 80s and early 90s, felt Indian players don't measure up to the standards of their European counterparts, because they don't receive a proper grounding in basic skills.

"There is a vast difference. I think the biggest problem over here is that they have never been taught the fundamental basics at an early age. That is a real problem. That is why I wanted to get involved and that is why I am part of this programme," he said.

"Because I think it is vitally important that the kids do get to know how to stop a ball, how to pass, move the ball and over all basics that are key elements in making a footballer or talent.

"The good thing is that because it hasn't been done before, when you do it now, there will be instant success and within two three months, you will see a difference in the kids. It's how you sustain that interest, and that is part of our programme," he said.

Masefield said Kooh Sports will look at setting up football academies across the country to nurture talent.

"We will be doing clinics that range from two days to a week and then we will be looking at setting up academies in different locations. We are not looking at just the metro cities. We want to increase the talent pool so that they have more players to chose from in the future."

Without mentioning any name, the Singapore-based football analyst took a dig at some of the top European clubs who, he said, visited the Asian countries only for making some money without giving anything back.

"A lot of European clubs, they just come in, have a camp and they go away. Now I have lived in Asia over half my life and I can tell you that a lot of these European Clubs try to take money and go. They are not giving anything back. They are not doing it right."

Masefield said the exception to this rule was Manchester United.

"At least Manchester United has a soccer school here. They are doing it right. Their base is strong, which is good. The more people who do it, the bigger the talent pool and it is only going to benefit Indian football," he said.

The former footballer saw a huge boost to the game in the country if India's proposed bid to host the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in four years' time is successful.

"It would be a massive help. Scott O'Donell, who is with the AIFF, is looking to try and implement things. The federation is trying to pull this together. They are trying to get this talent base so that in the next 12 months, they can develop them for this competition."

He predicted an increased participation in the game in India, which he expected to double in the next few years, because of the World Cup in Brazil next year and the continuing popularity of the English Premier League.

"Football in India is big anyways. Everyone says it's a second cousin to cricket. Why should football be cast as a second fiddle? I think within the next 12 months, everything is going to flip. Viewership for the English Premier League is going to be massive this year.

"Next year we have got the World Cup. It would not surprise me if the number of participation within football would be doubling or trebling in the next 12-14 months due to these two events," he said.

'People jealous of CSK because of Dhoni'

CHENNAI: BCCI president N Srinivasan, who has stepped aside from his post in the wake of the IPL spot-fixing scandal, on Friday took potshots at his detractors, saying they were "jealous" as he was able to rope in Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to lead his IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings.

Srinivasan, who found his name dragged into the IPL fiasco after the alleged involvement of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan in spot-fixing and betting scandal, was speaking at a function for the first time since he stopped discharging his duties as BCCI president.

"Why do you think people are jealous of CSK (Chennai Super Kings)? It is because of Dhoni. There was a savage attack on me (recently) because I have Dhoni," Srinivasan said, referring to recent controversies related to IPL which saw him face scathing criticism on issues of propriety and probity after the arrest of his son-in-law Meiyappan.

Interacting with a group of students and academicians at Alagappa College of Technology, Srinivasan said his detractors would remain silent if he had released Dhoni.

Srinivasan showered accolades on the Indian captain terming him an "outstanding leader and innovative captain."

"On the field Dhoni never showed his emotions and was an intelligent cricketer and a simple man," Srinivasan said.

"Former Indian coach Gary Kirsten once said that on the field, no one can equal Dhoni as a captain," Srinivasan said, recollecting his conversation with the South African cricketer.

Srinivasan had recently stepped aside till a probe into his son-in-law Gurunath Meyyappan was completed, with former chief Jagmohan Dalmiya being named head of an interim arrangement to run the Board.

Mohammad Asif admits to spot-fixing

KARACHI: Following the footsteps of his fellow banned teammates, disgraced Pakistan pace bowler Mohammad Asif has also admitted to spot-fixing during a meeting with Subhan Ahmad, the chief operating officer of the Pakistan Cricket Board in Lahore.

A top source in the PCB said that Asif met Ahmad and confessed that he had indulged in spot-fixing during the fourth Test against England at Lords in 2010.

"He (Asif) said he was ashamed of what he had done and his conscience had been troubling him for the last many months but he was scared to speak out the truth," the source said on Thursday.

"Asif said he finally gathered courage to admit his guilt as he wanted to revive his cricketing career and also salvage his image," the source added.

Asif, along with Salman Butt and Mohammad Aamer, was banned in early 2011 for a minimum of five years on spot-fixing charges. The trio also served jail sentences for corruption and cheating.

Both Salman, who was the captain of the team when the spot-fixing scandal broke out, and Aamer had confessed to their wrong doings earlier and apologised to the nation.

Asif said he was willing to cooperate with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and PCB completely, and undergo a rehabilitation program.

"He said he was ashamed and that he apologised to the entire nation and his fans for his mistakes," the source said.

"It is a good thing that Asif has also admitted to his guilt and the PCB will now try to start rehabilitation programs for Butt and Asif as soon as possible," he added.

The PCB has already requested the ICC to review Aamer's ban and allow him to use the Board's training facilities and also take part in some club cricket so that he is ready to play competitive cricket again when his ban ends in 2015.

Asif has remained the most controversial figure among the banned players and has also been found guilty of failing a dope test, carrying marijuana and other problems in the past.

'Definitely needed a kick up the bum'

PRETORIA: David Warner has said he needed to be dropped from the Australian Test squad following his pub brawl with Joe Root during which the Aussie landed a punch at the Englishman.

Warner's ban over the incident that took place in a Birmingham pub during the Champions Trophy cost him his place in the first two Tests at Trent Bridge and Lord's.

But he is back in contention for a recall in the third Test at Old Trafford after his 193 during the ongoing unofficial Test match against South Africa A in Pretoria.

"Sitting on the sidelines and copping that punishment and not being selected it was a thing that I needed," Warner was quoted as saying by cricket website.

"I definitely needed a kick up the bum. It was my own fault the incident that happened. My job was then to support our players, support the rest of the group and do everything I could to help them prepare for the games. I did that and I know the other guys on the tour did the same thing. We've all been working very hard," he added from South Africa.

Warner was sent on the Australia A tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa after being left out of the Trent Bridge Test as Cricket Australia felt the opener needed some time in the middle.

Warner impressed by surviving for more than five hours at the crease here, against a South Africa A attack boasting the promising pace pairing of Kyle Abbott and Marchant de Lange.

Federer slumps to loss against Brands

GSTAAD (Switzerland): Roger Federer's worrying slump continued Thursday when he was knocked out of the Swiss Open by world number 55 Daniel Brands in another shattering blow just a month out from the US Open.

The German spoiled former world number one Federer's return to the tournament after nine years with a shock 6-3, 6-4 second round upset.

World number five Federer has won only the Halle title this season after claiming his 17th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2012.

Last week, the 31-year-old was stunned by Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis, the world number 114, in the Hamburg semi-finals.

That defeat came just a month after Federer was knocked out of Wimbledon by Ukraine's world number 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round.

That brought to an end a run of 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances for the Swiss.

Thursday's 65-minute upset left Federer scrambling to find some form ahead of the US Open in four weeks' time.

His build-up for the season's final Grand Slam event of the year in New York begins at the Montreal Masters from August 5.

Federer had made a celebrated return to the small claycourt tournament at Gstaad where he got his start on the ATP Tour 15 years ago as a teenaged wildcard entry.

He lost in the first round in each of his first four appearances, from 1998 through 2001.

The fifth-ranked Swiss -- his lowest standing in a decade -- was competing in this elite alpine village at 800 metres nine years after last appearing in a title-winning performance.

Brands came good on the threat he posed in the Hamburg first round eight days ago when he lost in three sets to Federer.

This time, the German got the win despite Federer saving two match points, the first with an ace on his own serve in the ninth game of the second set.

Brands completed the fourth win of his career over a top 10 player a game later after Federer, who struck more than 20 unforced errors, saved another match point before falling to a Brand service winner.

"This is a really special win," said Brands.

"I played at 100 per cent, I didn't have a big strategy, I just played point after point and tried to stay strong mentally."

The German will next face Victor Hanescu, who advanced to the quarterfinals when Spanish eighth seed Roberto Bautista Agut retired with back pain trailing 7-6 (7/2), 3-2.

Serb third seed Janko Tipsarevic was knocked out in his opening match 6-2, 6-2 by Dutchman Robin Haase.

Tipsarevic has had a dreadful showing this season, slipping out of the top 10 over the last four months.

He began in January with a title in Chennai but has since managed only three quarterfinals.

The number 18 had no answer to Haase, playing the tournament for the first time and now standing 16-18 this season and now one victory away from a 100th career success.

Tipsarevic went down two breaks in the second set and managed briefly to stop the rot before eventually falling in 61 minutes with six double-faults and dropping service four times.

The 2011 Gstaad winner, Marcel Granollers, moved into an ATP quarterfinal for the third time this season with a 6-2, 7-5 second-round elimination of Delbonis, the runner-up in Hamburg last week.

Granollers, one of eight Spaniards to win the title in the post-1968 Open era, claimed victory over the 65th-ranked Delbonis -- he stood 114th last week -- in 96 minutes.

England set 583-run target for Australia

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 21 Juli 2013 | 22.58

LONDON: Australia were set a target of 583 to win the second Ashes Test at Lord's on Sunday.

Scorecard

England declared their second innings on 349 for seven early on the fourth morning after Joe Root, 178 not out overnight, holed out for a superb 180.

If Australia were to reach their imposing target it would be a new record as no side has made more to win in the fourth innings of a Test than the West Indies' 418 for seven against Australia at St John's in 2002/03.

Ashes-holders England lead this five-match series 1-0 after their 14-run win at Trent Bridge last week.

Heynckes rules out Barcelona job

BERLIN: Treble-winning coach Jupp Heynckes has poured cold water on speculation linking him to the vacant Barcelona job as the ex-Bayern Munich boss insisted he is enjoying his retirement.

The 68-year-old steered Bayern to become the first German club to win the treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup last season as the Bavarian giants swept aside all rivals.

As well as capturing their fifth European title, Bayern broke or equalled 25 Bundesliga records en route to winning the German league by a staggering 25 points.

Heynckes stepped down as Bayern coach following his history-making feat but has said he has no interest in replacing Tito Vilanova, who resigned as Barcelona coach on Friday.

"I think now it would be impossible to take on a new club after my time at Bayern Munich," Heynckes told Germany's Sky Sports News.

"I keep myself busy, I have hobbies, I do some sports, I have my pets and a huge garden to keep me occupied."

With Vilanova, 44, walking away from the Barca job to continue cancer treatment, a poll in the Spanish media put Heynckes top of the potential list of candidates.

But after a career spanning half a century as a player then coach, which saw Heynckes steer both Real Madrid and Bayern to Champions League victories, the German has said enough is enough.

"I understood the signals from my body and rightfully so," he said.

"I feel well and enjoy having some time to myself."

Former Holland star Ronald Koeman has also ruled himself out of the running for the Barcelona vacancy.

"No, I haven't given it any thought at all," said the 50-year-old Feyenoord coach.

"I am more concerned about Vilanova's illness.

"Who will be the coach? I don't know, I have nothing to do with it."

England move closer to crushing victory

LONDON: England moved remorselessly towards a crushing victory within four days over Australia in the second Ashes Test at Lord's on Sunday after setting the visitors a notional target of 583 to win.

Scorecard

After batting throughout Saturday's third day, Alastair Cook declared his team's second innings closed on 349 for seven after Joe Root had been dismissed for 180.

The frail Australian batting was then again cruelly exposed when Graeme Swann took two wickets in 17 balls to reduce Australia to 48 for three at the lunch interval.

Cook gave Root an opportunity to become only the second Englishman to score a double century at Lord's when play resumed under hazy cloud which soon cleared under the hot sun.

However, the young Yorkshireman had added only two to his overnight total when he tried an ambitious scoop shot over his head off Ryan Harris. The ball looped to Steve Smith at third man and he gratefully accepted the catch.

Jonny Bairstow was the only other batsman to fall in the final 15 minutes of the England innings after hitting Ashton Aghar straight back over his head for six. Bairstow played an indifferent shot outside his off-stump to Harris and was caught behind for 20.

Matt Prior was the not out batsman on one, surviving a simple caught-and-bowled chance when he pushed a delivery from left-arm spinner Agar straight back to the bowler who spilled the catch.

Shane Watson made his customary bright start with 20 from 23 balls with three boundaries when Australia batted again before making his customary early exit.

The burly Australian opener planted his left leg straight down the pitch and was given out lbw for the second time in the match. This time, Watson did not waste a referral to the third umpire and instead trudged back grim-faced to the Pavilion.

Cook introduced Swann for the 10th over and the England off-spinner responded by knocking back Chris Roger's off-stump with his fifth ball.

Rogers (6) had already left two deliveries which had spun extravagantly away from the left-hander out of the bowler's footmarks and was fooled by a flatter, faster delivery which slid straight on.

Swann struck again with a similar delivery which hit another of Australia's left-hander Phillip Hughes (1) on the back pad. Hughes opted to refer the decision but the replay confirmed umpire Kumar Dharmasena's original decision.

Australia captain Michael Clarke survived a stumping opportunity to Prior off Swann after scoring two but was still the only Australian batsman who looked as if had any idea how to counter the England spinner.

England batsman Kevin Pietersen did not take the field and will play no further part in the match because of a left calf muscle strain.

Serena racks up 51st win to take title

BASTAD (Sweden): World number one Serena Williams racked up her 51st win of the year on Sunday when she cruised past home player Johanna Larsson in the Swedish Open final.

Williams showed little mercy as she swept to a 6-4, 6-1 victory to take the 53rd WTA title of her career.

Larsson, 24, ranked 76th in the world, had no answer to the Williams arsenal and her third WTA final went the way of the previous two, ending in defeat.

French Open winner Williams, 31, was contesting her 69th final and is unbeaten on clay this season, having also won in Rome, Madrid and Charleston.

Previously, the most WTA main draw match wins Williams had at this stage of the year was 38, back in 2003.

Australia 136/6 at tea, trail by 446 runs

LONDON: Australia were 136 for six in their second innings, needing a further 447 runs to reach their victory target of 583, at tea on the fourth day of the second Ashes Test at Lord's on Sunday.

Scorecard

Brad Haddin was nought not out after Joe Root, who earlier made 180, struck twice with his part-time off-spin to spark a collapse that saw Australia lose three wickets for two runs in 23 deliveries.

Skipper Michael Clarke (51), Usman Khawaja (54) and Steven Smith, caught behind off Tim Bresnan, all exited in quick succession.

No side has made more in the fourth innings to win a Test than West Indies' 418 for seven against Australia at St John's in 2002/03.

Ashes-holders England lead this five-match series 1-0.
