India crumble against Australian bowlers

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Maret 2014 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Yuvraj Singh, along with skipper MS Dhoni, put up a solid partnership to lead India's run-charge against Australia in their ICC World T20 match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Scorecard

Yuvraj and Dhoni blasted the Australian bowlers to all parts of the ground to compensate India's bad start in their innings after being asked to bat first.

Brad Hodge provided Australia with their first breakthrough when he had Rohit Sharma caught in the first over itself after Australian captain George Bailey won the toss and decided to bowl.

Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli then tried to revive the Indian innings when the duo put up a gritty 40-run partnership for the second wicket.

However, Doug Bollinger struck to dismiss Rahane (19) soon after James Muirhead got the prized wicket of Kohli (23) by having the Indian vice-captain caught by Cameron White at long-off.

Soon after, Suresh Raina (6) too returned back to the pavilion when the left-hander was scalped by Glenn Maxwell to leave the Indians reeling at 69/4 at the end of 12 overs.

India have made two changes for this inconsequential league match by brining in Rahane in place of Shikhar Dhawan and replacing Mohammed Shami by Mohit Sharma.

Australia, who bring in Cameron White in place of James Faulkner, have been knocked out of the tournament following Pakistan's comprehensive 50-run victory over Bangladesh earlier on Sunday.

On a roll after completing a hat-trick of victories, title contenders India would look to continue with their winning ways in the tournament against a struggling Australian team.

Having registered comprehensive wins against Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh in three successive matches to qualify for the semifinals, the confidence of the team is at an all-time high as they face George Bailey's Australia which has not done justice to their immense potential.

With back-to-back defeats against Pakistan and West Indies, the Australian team are all but out of the competition with a faint mathematical possibility that has kept them afloat and interested.

But for that to happen, George Bailey and his team first need to beat India by a comprehensive margin which looks a distant reality considering the current form of the two teams.

Team:

India: MS Dhoni (Capt. & wk), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Amit Mishra, Mohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane.

Australia: George Bailey (captain), Aaron Finch, David Warner, Shane Watson, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Brad Hodge, Mitchell Starc, Doug Bollinger, James Muirhead, Cameron White.

Yuvraj powers India to 159/7 against Oz

NEW DELHI: Yuvraj Singh finally got back to form with an impressive 60-run knock as India posted a competitive 159 for seven against Australia in an inconsequential Group 2 league encounter of the ICC World T20 on Sunday.

Scorecard

On a slow track, Yuvraj initially struggled before blasting four sixes and five boundaries in a 43-ball knock. It was also his eighth T20 International half-century in 38 matches.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni played the role of second fiddle to perfection, contributing 24 in an 84-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Dhoni lost the first toss in the tournament and as Ravichandran Ashwin had said yesterday, were forced "swim a tsunami" considering the adverse conditions for batting first on a slow Sher-e-Bangla track.

It wasn't conducive for strokeplay as the Indian batsmen found out while trying to set a decent target. The Australian slow bowlers did a decent job in these conditions as India managed only 59 in the first 10 overs.

Australia opened their bowling with Brad Hodge and he got success removing the in-form Rohit Sharma (6) with a slider which the player tried to drive but got a thickish outside edge which went to James Muirhead standing at backward point.

Virat Kohli started with a slog sweep off Glenn Maxwell that went for a six and followed it by guiding Mitchell Starc to the third man boundary. But it didn't last long enough as he tried to hoist leggie Muirhead over long-off but failed to clear Cameron White stationed for that catch. Kohli's 23 came off 22 deliveries with two fours and a six.

Ajinkya Rahane was gone when Bollinger got a delivery to pitch on the off-middle line, which moved a shade with Rahane trying to steer it down. Brad Haddin held a regulation catch. Rahane scored 19 off 16 balls but couldn't utilize the opportunity he got due to Shikhar Dhawan's failure.

India were reeling at 52 for three when Suresh Raina joined Yuvraj.

Yuvraj was nervous from the onset as he was not middling the ball. A couple of times, he even misjudged the singles which could have cost India a wicket.

Raina also looked in trouble as the slowness of the pitch affected his stroke-making. Trying to hit his way out of trouble, the left-hander tried to hoist Maxwell but was caught by Aaron Finch at long-on. Raina managed only six.

Yuvraj finally broke the shackles when Muirhead bowled successive half-trackers which were posted in the deep mid-wicket stands as 17 runs came of that particular over which was the 14th of the innings. The first one bounced more than the second one but both met with the same fate.

Dhoni also got into the act after settling down as he first lifted Bollinger for a boundary over extra-cover and then hooked Starc for a six. Then came the shot of the innings when Yuvraj just stood and hit Starc over deep extra cover for a stunning six.

Yuvraj reached his half-century off 37 balls when he deposited a Watson full-toss over deep square leg for a six.

Rooney double helps United beat Villa

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 29 Maret 2014 | 22.59

LONDON: Wayne Rooney inspired Manchester United to come from behind and beat Aston Villa 4-1 on Saturday in a game marked by fresh protests against United manager David Moyes.

Points Table | Schedule & Results | Top Goalscorers

A small aeroplane towing an anti-Moyes banner flew over Old Trafford shortly after kick-off and the under-fire former Everton manager then saw his side fall behind to an Ashley Westwood free-kick.

However, Rooney scored twice before half-time, with Juan Mata and Javier Hernandez adding further goals as the under-performing champions provisionally moved to within nine points of the Premier League's top four.

There were fewer than two minutes on the clock on a sunny afternoon in Manchester when the plane, chartered by a group of disgruntled fans, made its appearance, trailing a banner that read: 'WRONG ONE - MOYES OUT'.

It was a response to the pro-Moyes 'THE CHOSEN ONE' banner that has adorned the Stretford End since the beginning of the season, but the man himself received a warm reception when he emerged before kick-off.

Applause turned to silence, though, in the 13th minute when Westwood curled a delicate free-kick over the United wall and inside the left-hand post to put Villa ahead.

Villa centre-back Ciaran Clark then put a free header over, but Rooney equalised in the 20th minute when he exploited slack marking to convert Shinji Kagawa's left-wing cross with a deft glancing header.

The England striker completed the turnaround shortly before half-time, burying a penalty into the bottom-right corner after Mata had been cleaned out by Leandro Bacuna.

Villa striker Christian Benteke gave United two big scares early in the second half, mis-kicking right in front of goal and then heading just over, but Mata's 57th-minute strike gave the hosts breathing space.

After Marouane Fellaini tried to bundle his way through in the Villa area, the ball popped out to Mata, who thrashed home right-footed to claim his first United goal since his club-record £37.1 million ($61.2 million, 44.8 million euros) move from Chelsea in January.

Substitute Hernandez made it 4-1 in injury time, touching home an Adnan Januzaj cross to complete an encouraging display ahead of United's mid-week Champions League date with Bayern Munich.

CHITTAGONG: Stand-in skipper AB de Villiers knocked the stuffing out of England bowling attack with a blistering unbeaten 28-ball 69 to propel South Africa to an imposing 196/5 in a crucial ICC World T20 Group 1 match on Saturday.

Scorecard

Stepping in for the suspended Faf du Plessis, De Villiers came to the party after experienced opener Hashim Amla laid the foundation with a 37-ball 56 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

De Villiers smashed nine fours and three sixes while Amla hit four fours and two maximums.

England won the toss and opted to bowl, keeping in mind the dew factor later on. But South Africa seemed unperturbed by all this.

Amla made use of a chance offered by English wicketkeeper Jos Buttler in the third over, going on to play a well-compiled knock that set the tone for South Africa's daunting total in this match.

Amla went down the wicket, failed to connect, but to his fortune, Buttler missed what was a sitter.

Amla's response next ball was a six as he danced down the wicket to whip one off Moeen Ali over wide long-on.

Before that, the South African powerfully flicked Jade Dernbach into the stands for a maximum over square leg.

The 30-year-old experienced opener played some lovely shots during his knock, which was cut short when he holed out to deep midwicket fielder Alex Hales off the bowling of skipper Stuart Broad in the 11th over of the innings.

Quinton de Kock fell soon after as the batsman, stepping out of the crease, was stumped by Buttler with a sharp piece of work before the South Africa could get back.

Thereafter, the redoubtable De Villiers took charge as well as he normally does in such situations, hitting the English bowlers all over the park to prop up South Africa's innings.

With David Miller giving him able support at the other end, De Villiers freed his arms to go all out. There was one shot against Dernbach whose full delivery outside off was smacked straight down the ground for a six with the batsman down on one knee.

The ball was changed after that shot but the result was same as De Villiers hammered the bowler for another maximum, this time over long-on. That brought the stand-in skipper's fifty, which turned out to be the fastest in T20s for South Africa.

Scorecard

Amla smashed six boundaries and two sixes during the course of his half-century

Amla came out all guns blazing to give South Africa blistering start and continued to hammer England bowlers all over the park and took Proteas past 50 runs in the sixth over.

Play was disrupted because of floodlight failure forcing the players to walk off the field.

The lights were out for ten minutes before the players came back out and play continued.
Earlier, England skipper Stuart Broad won the toss and decided to field against South Africa.

With regular captain Faf Du Plessis serving a one-match ban for slow over rates, AB de Villiers leads South Africa.

Farhaan Behardien replaced Du Plessis while Wayne Parnell came in for Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

England started with a loss against New Zealand, courtesy rain that robbed them of a chance to defend their total of 172/6, but the Broad-captained side brought its campaign back on track with a six-wicket victory over table-toppers Sri Lanka.

With back-to-back victories, South Africa have put themselves in contention for a semifinal berth and they will look to seal the berth.

Rohit and Kohli lead India's run-chase

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Maret 2014 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Chasing 139 and losing Shikhar Dhawan early, India was boosted by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in their ICC World T20 match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Scorecard | Super 10 Standings

The Rohit-Virat duo put up a determined 40-plus partnership for the second wicket after India got off to a bad start when they lost Dhawan early in their run-chase.

Dhawan (1) failed yet again to get a decent score in the tournament as he was bowled by Al-Amin after the Indian opener got a wicked inside edge.

Earlier, Indian spinners yet again put up an impressive show as they restricted Bangladesh to a modest 138 for seven.

Ravichandran Ashwin was yet again at his parsimonious best with exceptional figures of two for 15 in four overs. Amit Mishra's dream run in the marquee event continued as he was the pick of the bowlers with figures of three for 26 in four overs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled tidily to give away only 21 in his three overs and dismissed their top player Shakib Al Hasan in the process.

For Bangladesh, all-rounder Mahmudullah finally came good as he blasted unbeaten 33 off 23 balls with five fours and a six to give his team's total a decent look.

Mahmudullah added 49 runs for the sixth wicket with Nasir Hossain (16) as they are the third team in the tournament that India have restricted for less than 140.

Opener Anamul Haque (44) played well at the top while skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (24) failed to convert the start that he got.

Tamim Iqbal's (4) tournament got from bad to worse as he was out in a soft manner, pushing at a flighted delivery from Ashwin that turned after pitching. Suresh Raina took the catch at the first slip.

Shamsur Rahman (0) was out off the very next ball with an atrocious cross-batted heave. He found out the only man outside the circle on the leg-side. Rohit Sharma had little difficulty in taking the catch running forward from his deep mid-wicket position.

Ashwin was on a hat-trick but Shakib stopped the Tamil Nadu tweaker from reaching the milestone.

Shakib (1) however did not last long as he was played on off Bhuvneshwar Kumar's delivery with Bangladesh were reeling at 21 for three within the first five overs.

Anamul along with skipper Mushfiqur Rahim started a repair job. Rahim hit Jadeja for a couple of boundaries including a slog-swept boundary that brought the team's 50 up in the ninth over.

Rahim (24) however played a loose shot and was caught by a diving Virat Kohli at mid-on position. Anamul-Rahim partnership yielded 46 runs for the fourth wicket.

Anamul hit some eye-catching boundaries off spinners. His favourite area of attack was the cover and extra cover region. A couple of boundaries off Shami and Bhuvneshwar were delightful strokes. He also hit Shami over long-off for a six and got a maximum, hitting Jadeja inside-out over extra-cover.

But on 44, Amit Mishra bowled back-to-back googlies which he failed to read. The first one went for four byes but the second one was good enough to light on the LED stumps. He faced 43 balls with five fours and two sixes.

Half of the team was back in the dug-out by the end of the 13th over with only 82 on board.

Sunil Gavaskar ready for top BCCI role

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 27 Maret 2014 | 22.58

NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: Former India captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar said Thursday he was ready to become interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as proposed by the Supreme Court.

"Mr. N.Srinivasan is innocent till proven guilty. I cannot pass an opinion on what Supreme Court feels as I am not a legal man. But as an opener I am ready for any challenge," Gavaskar said.

The Supreme Court on Thursday proposed that Gavaskar or any other former cricketer of his stature should take over as the interim president of the BCCI replacing incumbent Narayanaswami Srinivasan.

Gavaskar said that if the apex court is reposing faith in him he should be able to carry out the role.

"If the highest court is reposing this faith in me, I'll be happy to do what they tell me to do. As an opening batsman, you must be ready for all kinds of challenges. Will do everything to the best of my abilities," he said.

Gavaskar also said that he was ready to forego his lucrative contract with the BCCI as a commentator if he was asked to take the post.

"I am ready to give up my contract if I am asked to do so by the Supreme Court," he said.

Asked about Supreme Court's proposal to bar Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from participating in the IPL, Gavaskar said that keeping away the two franchises will not clean cricket from corruption.

"Any cricket lover will feel sad if Chennai doesn't play IPL. They have given a lot of joy to fans. Not having IPL is not going to help. When match-fixing cropped up in 1999-2000, no one said to stop Test cricket. There is no guarantee that with the strongest of measures you can stop corruption," he said.

Sourav Ganguly

West Bengal sports minister Madan Mitra on Thursday batted for former India captain Sourav Ganguly to take over as the country's cricket board chief, hours after the Supreme Court proposed cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar as its interim president replacing incumbent N. Srinivasan.

"Who better that Sourav? Sourav means clean cricket, Sourav means youth and energy. If the SC wants to know about Sourav's credentials for the post, the people of Bengal will vouch for that by hitting the streets," Mitra told media persons.

"Sourav symbolises integrity, he played cricket for so many years but never ever did his name crop up in any kind of fixing or the like. There is no better choice than him," added Mitra.

Making scathing remarks against Srinivasan, a bench headed by Justice AK Patnaik proposed the name of former cricketer and commentator Sunil Gavaskar to head the Board of Control for Cricket in India during the pendency of the case in the apex court.

While Gavaskar said he was ready for the "challenge", another former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi suggested that BCCI's ex-chief Shashank Manhohar should replace Srinivasan.

Early blows rattle Eng in chase of 190

NEW DELHI: Taking advantage of England's poor fielding Mahela Jayawardene (89) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (55) shared 145-run stand for the second wicket to power Sri Lanka to a huge 189/4 in the World T20 Super 10 match in Chittagong on Thursday..

Scorecard

Jayawardene benefited from many dropped catches and went on to score 89 off 51 deliveries. He came to bat after the early dismissal of Kusal Perera off Jade Dernbach at the score of 4 after Sri Lanka were asked to bat.

However, the right-handed batsman rode on the poor fielding by the opponents and soon rescued his side with his aggressive strokeplay. His 51-ball knock was studded with 11 boundaries and three sixes.

He was ably supported by Dilshan who made a gritty 55 before becoming second victim of Dernbach.

Dernbach struck in the second over of the match to get Perera caught behind.

Perera (3) got his glove while while trying to pull Dernbach, giving an easy catch to the man behind the stumps.

Both teams were unchanged from their last games. Sri Lanka crushed the Netherlands by nine wickets on Monday while England lost to New Zealand under the Duckworth-Lewis method on Saturday -- both matches played in Chittagong.

South Africa edged out the Netherlands by six runs in the same group earlier on Thursday.

Title holders the West Indies, India, Pakistan, hosts Bangladesh and Australia are in group two.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semis.

Teams:

Sri Lanka: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardena, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Ajantha Mendis, Kusal Perera, Thisara Perera, Kumar Sangakkara, Sachithra Senanayake.

Cricket will overcome crisis, says Dravid

BANGALORE: The IPL spot-fixing scandal may have brought cricket into disrepute but former India and Rajasthan Royals skipper Rahul Dravid feels that the game's credibility is not lost and is confident that it will overcome the crisis.

"In every field of life certain things happen that shouldn't have happened. But it's not that the whole game is spoilt," Dravid, mentor of Rajasthan Royals, said.

"Earlier also there have been incidents like these, but the game is great and will go on. There are bad things in every sphere of life. I don't think the game will be hit because of this," said Dravid while refusing to comment on the Supreme Court's proposal to suspend Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings from IPL.

"I wouldn't want to make a comment because I've not seen the proposal and these matters are in the court. We have to wait for the court judgment."

Mumbai Indians mentor Anil Kumble said it is the players responsibility to set things right to ensure the game's reputation remains undamaged. "The first set of allegations came in 1999-2000 and it was the responsibility of the players to set things right.

Even now, the players on the field will determine how the game is going to be seen. Yes, we have an opportunity to do whatever we can to ensure that the game is above all of this," said Kumble.

"Like I said, this is nothing different to what we see in our society. There is no difference to cricket. I can't comment beyond this. I don't know what the proposal is. The matter is sub-judice, so let us wait for the Supreme Court to give its verdict. I'm sure all of us as law-abiding citizens will abide by it."

On whether cricket associations in the South have backed Srinivasan despite the problems, Kumble said: "It's not just one person that you are talking about.

You are talking about a cricket association and it was not conditional support. Yes, it was important for us to take cricket forward and you need it to take support from the association at that point of time and I don't see a reason there is something wrong in supporting."

Former chairman of selectors Krishnamachari Srikkanth, however, refused to comment. "I don't think it's proper for any of us to comment, unless we know the exact information."

Srinivasan faces more heat to step down

NEW DELHI: Pushed to the brink following the Supreme Court's sweeping proposals to clean up the game, a beleaguered BCCI president N Srinivasan found himself under intense pressure to step down with senior administrators and former players asking him to abide by the apex court's suggestions.

Srinivasan spent most part of the day at home in Chennai having telephonic conferences with his legal experts and his close confidants in the BCCI but continued to maintain a stoic silence on the developments.

In a huge jolt for the Tamil Nadu strongman, the Supreme Court on Thursday proposed the replacement of Srinivasan by former captain Sunil Gavaskar and suspension of franchises Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from IPL 7 till the pendency of the betting and spot fixing case.

The apex court also proposed to pass an order barring India Cements officials from getting involved with the functioning of BCCI.

Soon after the court's proposals, more pressure was put on Srinivasan to voluntarily step down from the president's post with legends of the game like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Bishan Singh Bedi and Kris Srikkanth asking him to abide by the apex court's suggestions.

BCCI vice-president Ravi Sawant, former secretary Niranjan Shah and former treasurer Ajay Shirke were among the administrators who urged him to quit in the interest of Indian cricket.

Gavaskar was open to the idea of taking up the president's post, saying it will be a great "honour" to adhere to the directives of the highest court of the land.

"First and foremost, if the highest court suggests something, you have to do so but that has to be on record. I am currently contracted with BCCI as a commentator. But if Supreme Court wants me to do that, I will do it," he said.

"When the Supreme Court asks you, there is no question about it, there is not much you can do and I will be happy to do what they ask me to do", Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar, a former Indian captain, said he would wait for the final order from the court.

"I will consider it, it will be a huge honour that Supreme Court feels I will be good enough to do the job. But we will have to wait and watch until tomorrow in which direction it goes. Let's not jump the gun," the former Indian captain said.

Asked if he is prepared for the challenge, Gavaskar said: "As an opening batsman, you have to be prepared for all kinds of challenges, you have to play in all kinds of pitches, you are always prepared for a challenge mentally and physically.

"Even today, although I am happy to be away from the limelight, I am prepared to do what is needed if the Supreme Court wants me to do so," he added.

The final picture on Srinivasan's fate is likely to emerge on Friday when the court gives an interim order in the case after listening to BCCI's response.

The Supreme Court's proposal to suspend CSK and Rajasthan Royals from the seventh edition of the IPL has also thrown the cash-rich T20 event into jeopardy. It will mean that the tournament will be reduced to a six-team affair and the entire schedule will have to be reworked.

It will also create contractual problems with the broadcasters and franchises who have been promised a certain number of matches.

The BCCI's constitution does not allow an outsider to occupy the position of president which will mean that it will have amend its constitution to accommodate Gavaskar at the helm as per the suggestion of the court.

Ravi Sawant, who is the BCCI vice-president from West Zone, said the Board will have to act according to the Supreme Court suggestions.

"The SC has given just one day and it has said it will pass its interim order tomorrow. So there is no time to call an emergency meeting of the Board. Whatever the SC says in its order tomorrow, we will have to abide by it. There is no other way," he said.

Sawant has no direct answer on the proposal of the Supreme Court to replace Srinivasan by Gavaskar till the case in the IPL fixing and betting scandal is decided.

"There is a procedure in the BCCI Constitution regarding the vacancy of the president. Whatever the SC has proposed I don't know whether it will fit with the BCCI Constitution or whether it (the SC order) will overwrite the Constitution of the BCCI," he said.

Former captains Rahul Dravid, Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Anil Kumble said on the sidelines of a function in Bangalore that everybody will have to abide by the Supreme Court order.

"The matter is subjudice. We don't know what is exactly happening. Till the Supreme Court comes out with its order, it is not proper to comment on the issue. The Supreme Court is supreme and everybody will have to follow what it says. There is no other way," Srikkanth said.

"It's subjudice and we can comment only after the Supreme Court passes its order," Dravid said.

Kumble said whatever the Supreme Court orders, the Board and everybody will have to follow as law-abiding citizens.

"Beyond this, I can't comment on a matter which is subjudice. But the situation is no different for a cricketer. It's nothing new. Whatever is happening in cricket, we can see in the society also. Of course, we need to tackle this and clean up the game."

Former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah felt the rot in the BCCI has gone too far and the Board will now have to clean up the game before the public loses interest in it.

"It's a bad day for BCCI. Things have gone far beyond and it will only hurt cricket a lot. But I think in the interest of cleaning up the game, may be the Supreme Court's observations are correct. Whatever the Supreme Court decides BCCI will have to abide by it," he said.

"Most of the BCCI members are in dark about what is transpiring in the last 7-8 days. So, the BCCI should immediately, without any further delay, call Special General Body meeting and apprise all members about what has happened. And then the persons who are responsible should be taken to task."

Fans must 'prepare for worst': F1 doctor

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 26 Maret 2014 | 22.59

Former Formula 1 chief doctor Dr Gary Hartstein has warned that fans must prepare themselves "for the worst" news as attempts to awaken Michael Schumacher continue following his horrific ski accident.

Schumacher suffered serious brain injuries after hitting his head on a rock when skiing off-piste in the exclusive French resort of Meribel at the end of December, with attempts to bring him out of his medically-induced coma now in an eighth week.

The 45-year-old's manager Sabine Kehm confirmed 13 days ago that attempts to awaken the seven-time world champion are continuing and will do for "as long as it takes", warning that it can be a very long and drawn out process.

However, Dr Hartstein - who was a key figure in the paddock until the end of the 2012 season - has admitted that the longer it takes, the less likely it is that Schumacher will ever recover.

Writing on his personal blog, the American said: "As time goes on it becomes less and less likely that Michael will emerge to any significant extent."

A number of tributes and messages of support have been passed on in the hope that Schumacher will recover, and the support across the globe is not a surprise for the 58-year-old Professor.

"I always knew Michael was adored," Dr Hartstein continued.

"I spent years at circuits drenched in red by the Ferrari caps, flags, and shirts, and all of that for Michael. I'm still staggered by the depth and persistence of his fans' love for him.

"And whereas I worried more than a bit about what was going to happen when and if really bad news got announced, I've realised that perhaps the lack of status updates has given us all a chance to move on a bit, to process what's happening, and to start to... detach."

Reports earlier today claimed that Schumacher had lost up to 25 per cent of his body weight due to muscle atrophy, a condition common when patients are in a deep coma as their muscles are not being used.

Dr Hartstein said that it is "entirely possible and, in fact, probable" that Schumacher had lost a significant amount of weight.

"Happily, the consequences are not particularly dramatic, at least immediately," he added.

"To be blunt, a patient in coma doesn't really need his or her muscles . . . with the exception of the diaphragm. The diaphragm, which like the heart is pretty much always active, resists atrophy rather better than other muscles, but it does atrophy.

"And having a machine doing the breathing for you is one of the best ways to see how disuse atrophy affects the diaphragm too. Unfortunately, and assuming (as I have until now) that Michael is being ventilated by a respirator, there is probably some degree of diaphragmatic atrophy at this point."

Dr Hartstein went open to describe Schumacher's current state as a "persistent coma", and mentioned the "sever ramifications" that a lengthy period of time in a coma can cause.

"As mentioned previously, the longer one remains in a vegetative state, the less the likelihood of emerging, and the higher the chances of severe ramifications if the patient does in fact emerge," Dr Hartstein wrote.

"Most definitions consider the vegetative state to be permanent one year after the injury.

"Patients who are in a persistent/permanent vegetative state have lifespans that are measured in months to a few years. This depends on baseline function (extraordinary in the case of Michael, of course), the quality of nursing care, and other imponderables. They usually die of respiratory or urinary infections. Longer survivals have been described, but are exceptional."

Srinivasan exploring legal options

CHENNAI: Under-fire BCCI president N Srinivasan is exploring various legal options though he continued to remain mum on the Supreme Court observation that he should step down from his post for a fair probe into the IPL fixing scandal.

The beleaguered Srinivasan, who underwent a cataract surgery on Wednesday, had a series of meeting with legal experts during the day though no official word as to what he plans to do has come out yet.

His legal counsel PS Raman also met him at his residence but declined to speak on the issue.

"He (Srinivasan) had a cataract operation in the other eye this morning. I have come to meet him because of that. It is only a courtesy call," Raman told reporters.

When asked specifically whether Srinivasan was contemplating to step down in view of the Supreme Court observation, he refused to comment.

It is learnt that 69-year-old BCCI supremo is exploring various legal options available to him.

Srinivasan's continued silence has raised speculation that he may not resign immediately but may wait for the hearing to resume on Thursday before taking a final decision. Seeking a review is one of the options available to him.

BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel, who was in the United Arab Emirates to attend Asian Cricket Council meeting and also oversee the arrangements for the upcoming Indian Premier League, has cut short his visit and is expected to reach the city Thursday morning.

Patel is scheduled to meet Srinivasan soon after his arrival here to decide the future course of action.

The court, which had on Tuesday asked BCCI chief as to why he was sticking to the chair, wanted Srinivasan to quit on his own. The court had said if Srinivasan will not quit, they will pass an order for his removal.

After going through the contents of a report filed in a sealed cover by apex court-appointed probe panel into the scandal, a bench headed by Justice AK Patnaik said there are "very very serious" allegations made in the report and unless the BCCI president steps down, no fair probe can be conducted.

Three of five BCCI vice presidents -- Shivlal Yadav, Ravi Sawant and Chitrak Mitra -- had put pressure on Srinivasan by saying that he should honour Supreme Court's observation but the Tamil Nadu strong man stuck to his guns.

BCCI's new election rules will come into effect in September this year when the principal office-bearers and vice-presidents elected at AGMs from 2014 shall hold the office for a period of three years. Clause 15 (v) of BCCI's Rules and Regulations will apply if Srinivasan resigns.

The clause reads: "ln case of vacancy occurring in the office of President by reason of death or by him being adjudged insolvent or by him being convicted in a criminal case by a competent Court or by resignation or otherwise, the Hony. Secretary shall within 15 days convene a Special General Body Meeting to elect the President who shall be nominated by at least one full member from the zone which proposed the name of the President whose term was cut short prematurely. Such person who is so elected shall hold office till the next elections."

Since Srinivasan hails from South, it means that South Zone will have the right to nominate an eligible candidate. Shivlal Yadav, who is the vice-president from South Zone will have a good chance to become the president in such a scenario.

Srinivasan had stepped aside in June 2013 after his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan's name cropped up in the fixing scandal, which had to led to ban on paceman S Sreesanth and his two other Rajasthan Royals colleagues.

In his absence, former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya discharged the duties of the president.

However, at the BCCI AGM in September 2013, Srinivasan was re-elected as president.

Supreme Court had appointed a three-member probe panel, led by retired judge Justice Mukul Mudgal to investigate into the fixing saga. The Apex court-appointed panel had replaced BCCI's own two-man probe panel, which had exonerated Meiyappan of any wrongdoing and its verdict was challenged in the courts.

Spin vital to India's early WC success

MIRPUR: India have surprised at the World Twenty20 not only by their success but in that its being led by their spinners.

India came to Bangladesh with little recent success in one-day internationals and having played only one T20 since December 2012.

Yet, only them and Sri Lanka are unbeaten after winning their first two games, and India's spinners rather than one of their robust batsmen have been match-winners.

Legspinner Amit Mishra grabbed 2-22 against Pakistan and 2-18 against the West Indies to take both man-of-the-match awards.

The track at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium has helped spin, and since the venue will host all the knockout matches, captains have a lot of strategizing to do in the coming days.

"As far as the bowling is concerned, I am really happy to see how our spinners are bowling," India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said after his team's second win. "Yes, there is a bit of help for them but at the same time, you have to execute your plans well, especially in this format."

Mishra, who has three hat-tricks in the Indian Premier League but has not enjoyed a long run in international cricket, justified Dhoni's decision to play an extra spinner.

"My captain has been really supportive and been telling me that I will only do better as the tournament progresses," Mishra said. "He has given me the freedom to attack, to toss the bowl up as I like to do."

India's spinners have so far bagged 12 wickets and the pacemen five, turning around their perceived weak bowling attack which has restricted the opposition to 129 and 130 in their first two games.

The tournament has also seen a host of spinners open the bowling including West Indian leg-spinner Samuel Badree and Pakistan left-armer Zulfiqar Babar.

Badree grabbed 4-15 against Bangladesh on Tuesday while Babar took 2-26 with the new ball in Pakistan's 16-run win over Australia on Sunday.

Australia opener Aaron Finch said ahead of Friday's match against the West Indies that playing spin was a challenge, especially the prospect of facing someone like Badree early on.

"Badree has opened the bowling for them for a few games now," Finch said. "He is an interesting bowler. He bowls a great length. He is someone who is hard to hit down the ground and it is a bit of a risk if you go across the line."

Finch said even the more familiar spinners on the circuit need to be watched out for.

"A lot of us have played (West Indies') Sunil Narine in the Big Bash and in the IPL. Having faced him quite a bit, we are going to have our plans," Finch added. "He is still a quality bowler. He spins it both ways. Anyone who does that is going to present a challenge."

While spinners have won matches in the tournament, their lack of success has impacted games, too.

When Brad Hogg did not get wickets, Australia lost to Pakistan; when Saeed Ajmal or Narine did not make inroads, India won with ease.

Ajmal, Narine still have time and games. The tournament took a break on Wednesday, and will resume on Thursday with South Africa-Netherlands, and Sri Lanka-England.

Vettel, Franklin winners at the Laureus

KUALA LUMPUR: Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel and swim star Missy Franklin were named Laureus sportsman and woman of the year on Wednesday in a ceremony in Malaysia that was tinged with tragedy over the MH370 plane disaster.

Germany's treble-winners Bayern Munich beat out rugby's All Blacks for team of 2013 and Rafael Nadal won comeback of the year at the glamorous awards show in downtown Kuala Lumpur.

The ceremony, packed with some of the greats of world sport, was preceded by a moment's silence for the 239 people killed when flight MH370 crashed in the Indian Ocean in still unexplained circumstances.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who just two days earlier announced the fate of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane and passengers, said "our thoughts and our prayers" were with the victims.

"At this difficult time we draw strength from individual stories of perseverance, of generosity, of endurance. The nominees here tonight display those values," Najib told the audience in the Malaysian capital.

Vettel, F1's youngest four-time world champion and in Kuala Lumpur for this week's Malaysian Grand Prix, won sportsman of 2013 ahead of Usain Bolt, LeBron James, Nadal, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Farah.

"If I've learned anything tonight, surely it's the fact that sport can be a very, very big inspiration," an emotional Vettel said. "I've come here and seen many heroes of mine... this (award) is very inspirational, very special."

Franklin, 18, beat tennis great Serena Williams and Russian pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva, among others, to the women's award and afterwards she offered her condolences for the plane crash.

"It's a horrific tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with you along with the thoughts and prayers of billions of people around the world," said Franklin, who won a record six golds at last year's world championships.

Spain's Nadal won comeback of the year for his amazing recovery from a career-threatening knee injury when he won the French Open and US Open and returned to world number one.

"Everyone knew how tough last year was with my injury. I thought I would never have the chance to come back," said Nadal, who picked up the third Laureus award of his career.

Afghanistan's cricket team were honoured with a spirit of sport award for their feat in rising from refugee camps and long-running conflict to qualify for the 2015 World Cup.

Spanish MotoGP rider Marc Marquez won breakthrough of the year for becoming his sport's youngest ever world champion at the age of 20 years and 266 days.

Skier Marie Bochet of France, who was born without a left forearm, was named best sportsperson with a disability and British BMX rider Jamie Bestwick won the action sports award.

The winners were chosen by secret ballot by a 46-strong panel of sporting greats. Bobby Charlton, Steve Waugh, Johan Cruyff, Sebastian Coe, Mark Spitz and Nadia Comaneci were just some of the big names at the show.

Organisers had earlier scaled back press events and dedicated a football match featuring legends of the game to the victims of the plane crash after it was confirmed on Monday.

The widely televised show was moved from Rio de Janeiro after authorities in Brazil, which has seen protests over its hosting of the World Cup, became concerned over the reaction to spending public money on the event.

Sehwag's ton guides MCC to victory

ABU DHABI: India discard Virender Sehwag blasted a 97-ball 109 to lead Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) to a comfortable six-wicket win over Durham in a Champion County Test match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Delhi batsman smashed 18 boundaries and a six in his 97-ball innings to help MCC overhaul the victory target of 225 in 51 overs on the fourth and final day.

Out of the national side for more than a year, Sehwag played a captain's knock as he added 105 runs with Samit Patel (48 not out) of Nottinghamshire for the fourth-wicket.

Sehwag was finally dismissed by Jamie Harrison in the 49th over of MCC's second innings.

Resuming the MCC's second innings at overnight 48/2, Sehwag blasted three fours in the opening over of the first session from seamer Harrison to give his team a good start in the day.

The inexperienced Durham attack failed to tame Sehwag as he completed his half-century in 47 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and then by lunch, he was only five runs short of the three-figure mark.

Sehwag brought up his hundred shortly after the lunch break with a boundary off Harrison. He took 88 balls to reach his century.

Harrison, however, had the last laugh as he had the Indian caught by Paul Coughlin.

Electing to bat, Durham had scored 248 in their first innings but MCC replied strongly with 282. In their second innings, Durham were dismissed for 257, leaving MCC with a target of 224.

MCC finished the third day at 48 for two in 20 overs with Sehwag on nine and DJ Bell-Drummond on 15.

SA beat NZ by 2 runs in last-ball thriller

Dale Steyn and JP Duminy led South Africa to a thrilling two-run win over Group One rivals New Zealand on Monday that kept them in the hunt for a semi-final spot at the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.

Scorecard | Super-10 Standings | Match in Pics

South Africa, who lost their opening match to Sri Lanka, struggled early on and needed a blistering unbeaten 86 off 43 balls by Duminy to reach 170 for six.

New Zealand seemed to be cruising in their reply thanks to Kane Williamson's 35-ball 51 and Ross Taylor's 62.

They needed 31 off 24 deliveries with seven wickets in hand but a brilliant two-over spell from Steyn (4-17) turned the match on its head.

The fiery paceman dismissed the dangerous Corey Anderson for seven in the 18th over and then picked up two for four in the last over with the Kiwis, who beat England in their first match, requiring seven for victory.

Taylor, needing three off the last ball, was run out.

"I was thinking all the time, Dale is my trump card and I need to bring him back in the game because he was bowling beautifully," South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, who missed the Sri Lanka match with injury, said at the presentation.

"But with the way they were hitting the ball... it was a fantastic effort from Dale.

"We were in huge trouble at the start. JP took his time and then hit it sweetly at the end. Fantastic effort and one of the best innings I have seen him play."

Leg-spinner Imran Tahir also played a key role, taking two for 27, but paceman Morne Morkel had a day to forget as he went for 50 in three overs.

"Credit to South Africa for the way they hung in there... We probably should have won it pretty easily," New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum said.

"But you can't probably take it to the last over against such a quality bowler like Dale Steyn.

"Little bit of luck today and we would have got across the line but credit to South Africa for their performance."

Earlier, Hashim Amla (41) and Duminy fought back with a 55-run stand after South Africa had slumped to 42 for three.

The fourth-wicket partnership was broken in bizarre fashion when Amla thumped a ball from Anderson and it hit Duminy's bat at the non-striker's end before spooning up for the bowler to complete an easy catch.

Duminy was full of improvised strokes, bludgeoning 10 fours and three sixes as his side added 70 runs in the last five overs.

Lanka win as Dutch out for a record low

NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka recorded the fastest ever victory in a Twenty20 International as they thrashed a hapless Netherlands by nine wickets in just five overs in a Group 1 Super 10 match of the ICC World T20 on Monday.

Scorecard| Match In Pics

Put into bat, minnows Netherlands could survive just 10.3 overs as they were shot out for a miniscule 39, the lowest ever completed innings total in a T20 International history and the Lankans took just 30 deliveries to chase down the target.

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene remained unbeaten on 12 and 11 respectively after opener Kusal Perera was out for 14 in one of the most lopsided matches in cricket history at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Sri Lanka's win today was the largest margin of victory in terms of balls remaining as they overhauled the target -- by reaching 40 for one -- with 15 overs to spare.

The previous largest margin of victory in terms of balls remaining in a Twenty20 International was Ireland's 10-wicket victory over Kenya at Dubai International Cricket Stadium in March 2012, which was achieved with 76 ball (12.4 overs) to spare.

In that match, Kenya were shot out for 71 in 19 overs and Ireland chased down the target in 7.2 overs.

With today's win, their second on the trot, Sri Lanka are on top of Group 1 with four points from two matches. They had beaten South Africa by five runs on Saturday.

Earlier, Sri Lanka shot out Netherlands for just 39, with Angelo Mathews and Ajantha Mendis wrecking havoc with three-wicket burst each. Netherlands batsmen were simply run over by the Lankan bowlers.

For Netherlands only Tom Copper could reach double digit score of 16 while five of them were dismissed for nought.

This was the lowest ever T20 International innings total, the earlier lowest being the 56 scored by Kenya while chasing a target of 163 against Afghanistan at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in September last year.

Mathews had the wickets of opener Michael Swart (0) and wicketkeeper Wesley Barresi (1) off consecutive balls in the second over but could not come up with a hat-trick. But, he came back to dismiss captain Peter Borren for nought in his next over to rock Netherlands innings.

The Dutch, who qualified for the Super 10 after defeating Ireland, were nine for four then and after a brief resistance, they suffered a dramatic batting collapse with Mendis taking two wickets in quick succession.

Netherlands lost three wickets in the same score of 39 with Mendis dismissing Pieter Seelaar (0) and Ahsan Jamil (0) in a space of three balls.

Lasith Malinga took two wickets and Nuwan Kulasekara chipped in with one scalp each.
