Every team takes home advantage: BCCI

INDORE: Although he is no longer a selector, Sanjay Jagdale still enjoys watching domestic matches. If there's a match going on at Holkar Stadium, the BCCI secretary makes it a point to watch it. He loves to be on the field and guides cricketers.

Much like fans, Jagdale too is looking forward to the Test series against Australia. With only a few days to go for the first Test in Chennai, Jagdale spoke to TOI on various cricket related issues.

Excerpts...

Q: There was a lot of talk about wickets during England series. What's BCCI stand on the wickets?

A: Whether any country accepts or not, every team takes the home advantage. When India played against England and Australia they played on tracks that helped their pacers. When South Africa went to England last year they prepared batting wickets, because South Africa had a superior bowling attack. It is a given practice and will continue to be so.

Having said that, the fact also remains that the board doesn't interfere in such matters. Dhoni was asked to comment on the wickets and he put up his point of view. Different people had different opinions and we can't comment on each and every opinion.

Winters are almost over now and the days will get hotter, so definitely there won't be much of moisture in the air and in soil. Spinners will get the turn. It's a natural process. It's same as in England in the early hours when there is a lot of moisture in the wickets. The basic character of the wicket remains the same whether it's India, Australia or England.

Q: The crowd turn out in the Tests hasn't been up to the mark in the recent years. Is BCCI thinking to shift Tests to smaller venues?

A: I feel there was a decent crowd during England Test series. It all depends on results. Crowd turn out gets affected if there's dull cricket being played, with no possibility of a result. On whether to shift Tests to smaller centres, it's a decision that only working committee can take. The proposal hasn't come from anywhere so far.

Q: After Oz lost Ashes against England, they set up a review committee on what went wrong. Is BCCI thinking on same line?

A: We have our own assessment process. We always remain in touch with captain, coach and the team management on how to make things better. We definitely have some plans which we implement from time to time. Last year, we had open trials for the untapped fast bowlers; we restructured the domestic cricket; the academies' set up has been changed.

There's a lot more focus on the wickets at domestic level, although it will take some time. There are lot more tours now for India 'A' and India Under-19 teams, so there is more exposure. There will be India 'A' tour of South Africa before the Test series there. There will be definitely some youngsters in that 'A' team. This is all part of planning, development and preparations. The youngsters will have highs and lows and we need to give them chances by more and more exposure. They too need some time to settle down.

Q: There are more and more injuries to fast bowlers. How important is NCA's role in their recovery? Former players have said NCA has become rehabilitation centre than a training centre?

A: Recently we had a meeting of support staff of 'A' and senior team in Bangalore. We discussed about how we can get them back on track soon. We discussed about the ways to monitor their fitness and rehabilitation so that the team management can have enough options. We are also in process of streamlining the facilities at NCA. There are specialized academies so the workload of NCA will get reduced. Only contracted players, Indian women team, India 'A' and India U-19 will be looked after at NCA. There will be more cricket related activities at NCA in future.

Q: There were talks about a spin coach for the national team. Any progress on that front?

A: There was a discussion but we haven't finalized it. If the team requires a spin coach in future, we will think about it. We don't want anything forced on the team. There has been a bowling coach in the team and if they want it in future we will look into it.

Q: Former India women's team captain Diana Edulji feels women cricketers aren't treated well in the country. Your take on that.

A: I don't agree with her and I don't want to give more weightage to her comments. She probably doesn't know what's going on. I would prefer to comment on what Mithali Raj has to say. She knows it better because she has been involved. She was happy with the preparations and the facilities. Our women team gets the same facilities as the men's team. They were given enough tours before the World Cup.

There are camps for them at NCA before every tour. They had very good preparations before the World Cup and it was unfortunate that they lost early. Besides, there are enough tournaments for women and U-19 girls in the country. One time payment is a different issue. That can't be criteria how we are bothered about women cricket.
