Woods given 2-stroke penalty at Masters

AUGUSTA: Tiger Woods was given a two-stroke penalty at the Masters on Saturday for an improper drop at the 15th hole in Friday's second round, a violation that could have led to his disqualification.

The Augusta National Golf Club competition committee's ruling meant Woods fell from three to five strokes behind leader Jason Day of Australia but he was allowed to continue playing in the year's first major championship.

A rule change last year governing such situations allowed for a two-stroke penalty, rather than disqualification for signing an incorrect scorecard, for a player who unknowingly makes a penalty.

"The penalty of disqualification was waived," said committee chairman Fred Ridley, who added that a television viewer prompted the committee to review the shot on Friday and at that time it decided he had complied with the rules.

Woods, a 14-time major champion chasing the record 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus, has not won a major title since the 2008 US Open and has not won the Masters since capturing his fourth green jacket in 2005.

The penalty was imposed for what Woods did after his third shot at the par-5 hole struck the flagstick and deflected into a water hazard, a devastating disappointment for the 37-year-old world number one.

"I thought it was a good one," Woods said. "I was pretty pissed. From making birdie there, I've got to struggle just to lose two shots."

Woods had the option of playing from the drop area or as near as possible to where his prior shot had been taken.

Instead, Woods chose to play the shot slightly farther back from where his original shot had been taken in hopes of not hitting the flagstick yet again, admitting as much in a television interview after the round.

"I went down to the drop area," Woods said. "That wasn't going to be a good spot, because obviously it's into the grain and it was a little bit wet. So it was muddy and not a good spot to drop.

"So I went back to where I played it from, but I went two yards further back. I tried to take two yards off the shot of what I felt I hit -- that should land me short of the flag and not have it either hit the flag or skip over the back."

After hearing his comments, the competition committee met with Woods on Saturday morning and decided that he had indeed violated the rule.

But because of the rule tweak that was adopted last year, Augusta National had an option other than disqualifying Woods for signing an incorrect scorecard because it had not reflected the penalty at the 15th.

To the delight of fans and telecasters, Woods was only given a two-stroke penalty, taking him from three-under 141 for two rounds to one-under 143 and dropping him to five adrift of Day.

The hole on which Woods had been so close to a tap-in birdie instead became a triple bogey.

Pairings were not adjusted because of the penalty, Woods continuing to start at 1:45 p.m. alongside Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano.

The rule was changed in part because television broadcasts the shots of top players but not all players, giving those under the most intense scrutiny a greater chance of being caught making an error they might not be aware of themselves.

The decision sparked plenty of comments on twitter, with Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell, who missed the cut by a shot, supporting the move.

"Take the fact that it was Tiger out of the equation and it is a fair ruling," McDowell said. "Since it is him the debate begins about TV ratings etc etc."

David Duval, a former intense rival of Woods who won the 2001 British Open, called on Woods to withdraw from the Masters.

"I think he should WD. He took a drop to gain an advantage," Duval said on Twitter. "Was there intent to break the rule is the question. Interpretation of the rules is up to the committee. There is some leeway with the signing the incorrect card. Not with intentionally not dropping as near as possible."
