The win allowed Mumbai Indians to register their seventh win in the league and log 14 points in the overall standings. The result also ensured their domination over the Dhoni-led side at the Wankhede.
In four games here, they are yet to lose to CSK. The win also meant that Mumbai continued their unbeaten home run, notching up their fifth win. They will play Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday night here.
Chasing a target of 140, made largely possible by enterprising knocks of 39 *(30b, 3x4, 1x6) and Harbhajan Singh 25*(11b, 2x4, 2x6) and their unbeaten sixth wicket partnership of 57 runs in 4.5 overs, CSK found the pace of Mitchell Johnson (3 for 27) and Lasith Malinga (2 for 6 in three overs) and the spin of Harbhajan Singh (1 for 13 in four overs) and Pragyan Ojha (3-11 in 2.2 overs) too hot to handle and crashed to 79 all out, their lowest total in the T20 league and the fourth lowest in the history of the tournament.
It seemed for a while that CSK were giving the hosts a lesson in how to play T20 cricket and Mumbai Indians were reciprocating by showing how not to play the format.
As if setting them a modest target wasn't enough, MI gave the table-toppers three gifts in a row in the first over off Johnson. Their best fielder, Kieron Pollard dropped in form Michael Hussey thrice at point. The third of the lot was the simplest and it even cost the burly Trinidadian a bloody nose. He caught the fourth one though to send back Suresh Raina for a first ball duck off the bowling of Johnson.
The slingy left-arm-seamer's second over was an eventful one as it produced three wickets to effectively swing the contest irreversibly in favour of the hosts. He dismissed M Vijay bowled, got Raina caught at point and trapped S Badrinath plumb in front.
MS Dhoni, who has batted up the order throughout the league strangely hid himself in the line-up and even promoted R Ashwin ahead of himself. At No. 7, he couldn't do much when half the side had been polished off.
Ravindra Jadeja, who had an impressive outing with the ball picking three wickets for 29 runs from his four overs, swung his bat around, but the damage had been done. Ojha got the big wickets of game-changers Hussey and Dhoni in a span of two overs and Malinga got Morris and Sharma in one over to finish the contest.
Earlier, it seemed as if MI were crawling their way through as openers Tendulkar and Smith laboured in the powerplay as Morris and Mohit Sharma bowled accurately. But in hindsight, their stand of 40 in 6.5 overs was an indicator of how difficult run-making was on this pitch.
