"One game, cricket, has destroyed every other game in our country. I hardly see any child playing any other sport than cricket across the country," Singh had said recently.
However, the Flying Sikh's popularity is such that his comments did not stop the 30,000 odd crowds at the Gahunje stadium from giving him a huge cheer when he arrived during the second innings of the match.
"I am happy that the people of Pune welcomed me wholeheartedly. Normally I don't go to cricket matches. In Mohali, when matches I would go and be there for a few minutes and return," said Milkha after the match, which Australia won by 72 runs.
In fact, his strong opinion on cricket's domination has not come in the way of his admiration for Sachin Tendulkar.
"There are only a few sportspersons who have brought laurels to India on the world stage. What Dhyan Chand did for Indian hockey has made people mention his name long after he has gone. Another such player is Sachin," Milkha said.
"He has announced his retirement and I wish him my best. My plea to the (Indian) cricket board is that they do their best to produce more Tendulkars in the future," the 78-year-old said.
