BCCI in talks with ministry on security

NEW DELHI: With IPL dates expected to clash with the general elections this year, the BCCI is in talks with the home ministry on security measures for the high-profile T20 tournament even as it scouts around the world for other venues.

"If certain IPL matches go out of India, BCCI is looking at every possible venue where cricket could be played," a top BCCI official told TOI. In fact, apart from Sri Lanka, South Africa, UAE and Bangladesh, BCCI is also looking at countries like Singapore and Malaysia.

A tentative IPL schedule may get released around the auction on February 12 based on assurances given by the Centre and various state police departments. In 2009, IPL was shifted out of India to South Africa due to general elections.

With most franchises batting for IPL to be held in India, BCCI is also looking at alternative home grounds for teams, apart from their original turf. If a certain state can't provide security within a certain window, BCCI will try and accommodate those matches in some other cities. All put together, BCCI is looking to use 20 grounds in India. If that too falls short, BCCI may schedule some IPL matches aboard.

If IPL has to be taken outside India, the biggest problem is the gate money, which no team will make away from home. In the last couple of seasons, most of the teams made somewhere between Rs 4 crore to Rs 6 crore per match from tickets alone. If the tournament is taken away from home grounds, BCCI won't compensate the franchises, which is why India looks to be the best option, albeit with slight adjustments in scheduling.

There is a suggestion from within the Board to break IPL into three parts. The first and last parts to be played in India and the middle window could be played abroad. Another idea is to stage the event in two halves - one in India and one abroad. But this leaves the question of 'who pays the extra cost'? "It's only the teams that will bear the brunt. The gate money is huge and every effort should be made by the teams to make IPL happen in India," a top franchisee official said.

Sources also said that if IPL does move out of India - South Africa, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the best options. If only a part of IPL moves out, Singapore and Malaysia may be good alternatives. UAE is there in the list, but it would be extremely hot in the summer.

"The board can't take a final call till a clear message comes from the home ministry. We are told that the election schedule may remain the same as it was five years ago. If that happens, it is going to be a great challenge to host the event in India," a top BCCI official said.
