Jayawardene benefited from many dropped catches and went on to score 89 off 51 deliveries. He came to bat after the early dismissal of Kusal Perera off Jade Dernbach at the score of 4 after Sri Lanka were asked to bat.
However, the right-handed batsman rode on the poor fielding by the opponents and soon rescued his side with his aggressive strokeplay. His 51-ball knock was studded with 11 boundaries and three sixes.
He was ably supported by Dilshan who made a gritty 55 before becoming second victim of Dernbach.
Dernbach struck in the second over of the match to get Perera caught behind.
Perera (3) got his glove while while trying to pull Dernbach, giving an easy catch to the man behind the stumps.
Both teams were unchanged from their last games. Sri Lanka crushed the Netherlands by nine wickets on Monday while England lost to New Zealand under the Duckworth-Lewis method on Saturday -- both matches played in Chittagong.
South Africa edged out the Netherlands by six runs in the same group earlier on Thursday.
Title holders the West Indies, India, Pakistan, hosts Bangladesh and Australia are in group two.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semis.
