CHENNAI: Orissa's Dutee Chand exhibited great athleticism to win the gold in 200m and complete a sprint double on the final day of 12th Junior Federation Cup Athletics Championship on Sunday.

The 18-year-old equalled former Tamil Nadu sprinter Velu Pandeswari's 17-year-old national junior record with her timing of 23.95 secs in the 200m event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The Odisha sprinter, who earlier eclipsed the 100m record, is confident of doing so in the longer sprint when she would take part in the Asian and World junior championships later this year.

Her impressive 100m time of 11.63 secs helped her earn the "Best Athlete" award in the three day meet that concluded here today.

Local girl Archana Suseendran (24.70s) and Bengal's Himashree Roy (24.86s) went home with silver and bronze medals respectively.

Tamil Nadu sprinter R Mohan Kumar took the 200m title in junior men's category in 22.12 secs to prevent Bengal boy Soumyadeep Saha (22.26s) achieving a double. Kamberdeep Singh of Punjab pipped TN athlete MS Arun (22.45 to 22.46s) for the bronze.

In discus throw, Punjab's Navjeet Kaur Dhillon, who improved the national junior mark in shot put yesterday, proved her mettle once again with a massive personal best of 53.97m for a 'double'.

Today's performance placed her fifth in the world junior rankings for the season and there is only another Asian -- Xie Yuchen of China with 54.31m -- ahead of her in the lists.

Anushi Desai of Maharashtra was more than 10m behind Navjeet for the second place, yet her 43.89m throw surpassed the asian junior qualifying mark of 41.32m comfortably. TN thrower Mahalakshmi, currently training in Patiala, finished third with 41.03m.

Few other athletes also achieved the "double" today. Maharashtra distance runner Sanjivani Jadhav, who on the first day had won the 5000m, came on top in the 3000m this morning with another meet record of 9:47.28. Haryana's Sharwan Kharb won another distance double as he added the 10000m gold to his 5000m win on the opening day.

Bengal girl Swapna Barman won two gold medals in the evening as she annexed the titles in junior women's high jump and heptathlon.

Incidentally, she set a meet mark of 5071 points in the combined events. While taking part in the heptathlon, Swapna equalled the national junior record in high jump (1.75m) held by Bobby Aloysius since 1996.

However, when competing in the individual (high jump) event today Swapna cleared only 1.66m on her first attempt. The tired athlete wanted to save her energy for the last event of the heptathlon (800m) but gave up after two failures in 1.68m in the high jump.

If groomed properly Swapna will soon be able to emulate her predecessor Soma Biswas in the multi-event competitions.

Haryana lad Arjun Khokhar made a 400-800m double. It is rare to see an athlete taking part in both the above events in recent times.

In the past Olympian Sriram Singh used to run this middle distance combination. "Arjun is a regular 800m runner. I just tested him in 400m and he came out with laurels in that too," said Wazir Singh, Chief National Coach for Youth Athletics. As many as eight of his wards won medals at Chennai.

Juniors Half-milers Jessy Joseph (Kerala, 2:06.34) and Archana Adhav (Maharashtra, 2:08.80) achieved World junior qualification in junior women 800m race.

Kerala state regained the Overall championships with 182.5 points from Haryana that finished runners-up (171 pts).

However, Haryana annexed the top position in the junior men's division (135 points) while Kerala did the same in the junior women category (125 points). Hosts Tamil Nadu finished runners-up in both groups.

Punjab's burly shot putter Navetejdeep Singh and sprinter Chand have been adjudged as "Best Athletes" in the junior men and junior women divisions respectively.
