SAO PAULO: In their opening game against Italy the other day, England's Raheem Sterling missed out on a great opportunity to become England's youngest-ever scorer at World Cup when he crashed the side netting from some distance.

It was a flash attempt, probably an unconscious tribute to a colleague he has been working closely with for the past two seasons and owes a lot of his impressive rise to. Yet, it is the same man Sterling - who has drawn comparisons with a young John Barnes - would not like to meet in England's next engagement here.

Match Predictions | Tournament Predictions

Just 19, Sterling has made experts take notice of his Liverpool exploits in the two years he has been there. Yet, apart from the obvious influence of his England mates Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Glen Johnson, it is the presence of Luis Suarez in the line-up which gives unique inspiration to the young winger. In Sao Paulo on Thursday, however, Sterling would want none of that.

All talk, anxious and shrill ever since England drew Uruguay in December - has been of Suarez, that strange maverick talent with a side to him that cannot be easily slotted in any category. He unsettles traditional English footballing system with his hunger for goals; he challenges old school English norms with his clear rejection of draconian Corinthian ideals of sportsmanship and the like.

The ad-makers have a field day anointing Suarez as the best all-round player in England, since he uses his hands, head and even teeth to help win. But the old order continues to harrumph at his behaviour.

On Tuesday, he spoke of a "barbarian desire to beat England" because missing Uruguay's first game against Costa Rica had left him with "savage impotence". He returns to the line-up and England are in a tizzy.

He runs, he scores, Beauty and Beast-style; he even weeps; he uses the metaphor of danger really well - something which would leave his opponents on Thursday at best "gutted" - but calling him unpredictably devious would be lazy analyzing. It is revealing of those who are still scarred by his handball against Ghana at the last World Cup. The African nation has moved on, Suarez couldn't be more bothered himself but the English never tire of bringing it up even to this day.

All this only adds to the Suarez legend, and he ploughs on unperturbed. It is that strange individuality of the man, fitting so well within the Uruguayan collective, which has England already gasping for air. It leaves the rest of the world salivating at the prospect of what to expect from this Sao Paulo outstation English Premiership fixture.

Somewhere, even more than Belgium, Nigeria or Ivory Coast at this World Cup, it is singularly 'the Suarez of Uruguay' idea which takes the concept of a Premiership rivalry and influence to a new level. You could say he is the Cantona of the new Premiership era, but then again, would the Manchester United school agree?

Recession threat looms if England lose

If England lose they will be hot favourites to get the boot.

Experts said the competition had already given businesses a £2 billion boost as the nation got behind the team. And each week they stay in the hunt will mean another £200 million in sales. But if they do not make it, bars and restaurants will miss out on another fortnight of ringing tills.

Liverpool mates blanking Suarez England's goal scorer against Italy, Daniel Sturridge, said he had stopped swapping texts with Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez, who will lead Uruguay's strike force. Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson are also blanking their club colleague.

Suarez, has admitted he and his mates were scoundrels, who will do anything for a win.

£701m England fans spent in supermarkets over their weekend clash against Italy 9 per cent rise in credit cards spending in supermarkets since the build-up to the mega event 'Keeper studies rivals by Hart Joe Hart promised that England are ready for anything Uruguay throw at them. Hart has spent the past few days looking at the scoring areas of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani to ensure he is fully prepared for the 'do-or-die' clash. Hart said: "We've studied the tapes and we are well aware of their strikers and their scoring patterns."
