Asian Games medal redemption for Shweta Chaudhary

MUMBAI: A 16-year journey, plagued with injuries, mired in frustrating fourth-place finishes, compounded by fatigue and depression, finally came to an end when Shweta Chaudhary clinched a bronze medal in the 10-metre pistol shooting event at the recently-concluded Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

Chaudhary, 28, has been part of the Indian shooting contingent for more than a decade now, but unlike her counterparts, recognition and rewards have been hard to come by. In fact, she was unfortunate to miss out on the 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2012 London Olympics berth.

"I always finished a close fourth or maybe a tight fifth. I have missed the podium on so many occasions. I guess that's why I was not noticed earlier," Chaudhary, who was felicitated by the Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) along with co-shooters Jitu Rai, Rahi Sarnobat, Heena Siddhu, Sanjeev Rajput and Prakash Nanjappa on Monday, told TOI.

"My scores were consistent, though. There was never a dip in form. It is just that I couldn't land on the podium," Chaudhary added.

While she was missing podiums by a whisker, Chaudhary was also troubled by injuries, mainly to her shoulder and back. There was a point in 2011 where she didn't pick up a pistol for close to six months.

But then OGQ and its team of experts intervened. The professionals not only took proper care of her injuries, they also played a vital role during her rehab phase. After a successful stint, Chaudhary felt motivated enough to pick up her pistol and was ready to fire again.

"We have been monitoring her closely and figured that even though she is not finishing among the top three, her scores were pretty high and consistent. We knew she had the potential to deliver so we backed her. We kept motivating her and today she has done all of us proud," OGQ CEO and former India hockey skipper Viren Raquinha said.

The Incheon bronze medal, Chaudhary insisted, will help her in future competitions.

"For an athlete, a medal is the greatest motivation. I am sure I will compete confidently and to the best of my abilities in tournaments that I will participate in," she said.

Shooting is a technical and complicated sport, yet has popularity in India. The sport has given expectations a new wind. Similarly, the Incheon bronze could prove to be the turning point for Chaudhary.
