FC Goa beat Delhi 2-1 to register their 1st ISL win

MARGAO: Those six minutes of added time that were flashed by the fourth official were lustily cheered by the home crowd. For some time till the 90th minute, FC Goa had looked threatening but the scoreboard showed they would get only a point for their efforts; not a fair result for a side that had dominated for long spells but had come a cropper in front of the goal.

But then in the third minute of the six added minutes, the stadium erupted in joy like never before as Tolgay Ozbey chested an overhead ball from Miroslav Slepicka, chested it down to evade the onrushing goalkeeper and slammed it inside an unguarded net. This was Tolgay's first goal in the league and good enough for FC Goa to script a come-from-behind win over Delhi Dynamos, their first in the competition, at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Saturday.

Only team to remain winless in four games, FC Goa knew they had to play out of their skins to break the duck. Despite missing four regulars, all injured, and captain Robert Pires suspended, FC Goa started ferociously launching a wave of attacks, but it were Delhi Dynamos who had their noses in front after captain Mads Junker had found the target in the seventh minute.

Goa were more determined after falling behind in the first 45 minutes but it looked like Zico's growing concerns of a lack of quality striker in his team would continue. It was not until the 73rd minute that FC Goa restored parity through Jewel Raja's header, and then, almost magically, Tolgay provided the perfect riposte to his critics with the match-winner at the death.

That the winner came from the boots of Tolgay was significant. The Australian striker is way down in the order of preferred strikers at the club, and whatever he did in training - even scoring a hat-trick last week against his own side - failed to convince doubters. So he continued on the bench but when given a chance, he responded in his own style; the look on his face saying it all.

For long, though, it seemed Goa would suffer another heartbreaking loss. After Junker had quietly slipped at the right end of Bruno Herrero Arias's cross - thanks to a beautiful through ball from Hans Mulder - to score with ease, FC Goa were staring at their third consecutive defeat at home. The injury to Brazilian midfielder Andre Santos, the best player in the squad, only added to their woes.
