ISL: Nicolas Anelka special downs Kerala Blasters

MUMBAI: A moment of magic by that man Nicolas Anelka and his wonderfully struck free-kick helped Mumbai City win 1-0 against Kerala Blasters at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday. Anelka took one step and hit the ball sweetly to the left of Sandip Nandy's goal after Ishfaq Ahmed had upended Johan Letzelter just above the box. It was solid performance by Mumbai City that saw their infamous defence finally holding fort and redeeming their prestige, especially after their 5-1 mauling they received at Chennai.

Mumbai started with Deepak Mondal as the right back and the experience of Syed Rahim Nabi in the left and Deepak combined to help them keep shape of the defence. With Central midfielder Letzelter playing solidly , Kerala, who had a come-from-behind victory over Pune, were allowed little breathing space upfront. With midfield winning more balls, and Anelka floating well below the high-line that Kerala defence was holding, their attack carried more potency.

Anelka did break from the right before his goal but his shot was saved. Then the moment came when he hit the free-kick beyond the reach of Nandy . In the second half, Mumbai's writ was larger as they often broke past the Kerala defence. One of the best moments to double the lead came in the 74th minute when Anelka ran down the right and cut the ball for Subash Singh who shot over the bar.

TURNING POINT

Thre free-kick in the 44th minute completely changed the complexion of the game. For Mumbai, who were looking competent in defending, went into the overdrive and troubled the Kerala defence enough to walk away thinking they should have won by a bigger margin.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Nicolas Anelka, it took the maverick Frenchman one moment to change the complexion of the game, and perhaps Mumbai's fortune in this ISL. A sweetly struck freekick made Nandy's carefully constructed wall look stupid when he struck to the goalkeeper's right.
