"Dhyan Chand should have got Bharat Ratna first. Dhyan Chand was the most deserving candidate," Milkha told reporters.
The 'Flying Sikh' though felt that bestowing the honour on cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has opened the door for the other Indian sportspersons.

"It was good that it was given to Sachin. It has opened the door for sportspersons. But the first to get it should have been Dhyan Chand," he added.
The 80-year-old Milkha, best remembered for his fourth-place finish in the 400 metres final at the 1960 Olympic Games, also spoke about the controversy surrounding shuttler Saina Nehwal's reported demand for the Padma Bhushan award.
"Her association should have said that she is deserving and that she should get the award. But if you ask for awards yourself, it is wrong," Milkha said.

This is not the first time that Milkha has demanded the Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand.
In December last year, Milkha had said that Dhyan Chand, who powered India to three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936, too deserved the honour.
"I also wish to see the Bharat Ratna conferred on Dhyan Chand for his tremendous service to our country. He made India proud. To build sports consciousness in our country and the character building it leads to, we need to honour our sportsmen as they help both by bringing laurels to the country and also inspiring many to work hard at whatever they do," Milkha, who participated in the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, had said in December.
"It was good to see Sachin (Tendulkar) get it last year and hopefully Dhyan Chand too. Though, ideally it should be given when a person is alive."
