Stiverne OK after hospital treatment in wake of fight

LOS ANGELES: Former heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne was released from a Las Vegas hospital on Monday after being treated for dehydration in the wake of his title loss to Deontay Wilder.

At a press conference on Monday afternoon, Stiverne said dehydration hindered him during the bout, in which Wilder claimed the World Boxing Council heavyweight world title with a dominating 12-round decision.

"Unfortunately I was not able to perform in the fight like I wanted to due to severe dehydration and muscle damage," he said.

Stiverne, who was born in Haiti but grew up in Montreal, dropped to 24-2-1 with 21 knockouts. The 36-year-old said Saturday night he felt vulnerable and slow, and had no explanation for feeling "flat" in the ring.

"I did not know the severity of it Saturday night," he said. "I was able to give the people a good show, 12 rounds of boxing. If I had to do it again I would do it again. This is not the end for me. I will give it a couple weeks and then get back to work."

Both the 36-year-old Stiverne and promoter Don King said they didn't want to take anything away from Wilder, who said Saturday he fought from the third or fourth round on with an injured right hand.

"We want to applaud Deontay Wilder for doing his job," King said. "Deontay performed and did a great job. We praise Deontay and hope he can be champion long enough to where we can have a rematch."

Stiverne had won the WBC title in May when he stopped Chris Arreola in the sixth round.

The title had become vacant by the retirement of Vitali Klitschko. Klitschko's brother, Wladimir Klitschko, holds all the other major heavyweight belts.
