The daughter of BAI president Akhilesh Das Gupta, the daughters of the secretaries of DCBA, the sons of vice-presidents and treasurer of DCBA were among those who visited Japan. Rather than sending upcoming players who could had gained rich experience on the tour, country's top badminton officials misused this opportunity by sending their family members.
The exchange programme entailed playing friendly games of badminton with Japanese youth and participants from all over the world, observing sports-related facilities and watching the Japan Open Super Series matches. This exchange was attended by 25 members from Delhi between June 9 and 17.
The Japanese embassy had on March 31, 2014 first approached SP Singh, the secretary of the Delhi Badminton Association (DBA) which has been made defunct. Singh explained the situation to Japanese embassy representative Rajesh Mohan Bajaj and directed him to the national federation (BAI).
It is alleged that no selection trials were conducted before the team was picked. Aggrieved over this, an RTI application was moved by VM Tyagi seeking information from Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports about:
1. How many players and officials were sent to Japan?
2. What was the basis of selection of the team?
3. Names of the team members with their dates of birth.
4. Names of their parents and the position they are holding in state national badminton association.
5. Names of schools colleges they are studying at.
The ministry directed that application to BAI which replied on August 7, 2014 saying "no such team has been sent by BAI to Japan so the reply to all the questions in not applicable".
A member of the delegation told TOI on condition of anonymity that they visited Japan, played friendly matches, watched the Japan Open and even provided a photograph of the tour. Efforts to reach BAI president Gupta or vice-president TPS Puri proved futile and they did not take the calls. DCBA general secretary Jitendar Kochar picked up the phone but cut the call after the details were sought about the programme.
Meanwhile, SP Singh accused BAI of denying a wonderful chance to deserving shuttlers. "Japanese embassy first approached me but I told that them my association, which is in existence since 1976, was made defunct and I directed them to BAI president.
It was shocking that they did not conduct any selection trials and sent their children on this foreign tour.
This is a classic example of rampant corruption in BAI," SP Singh said.
