BAI asks states to ban five players

VIJAYAWADA: A month after TOI exposed the overage menace in badminton the national body has issued a directive to the state associations to ban five junior players for a period of two years.

Disclosing this here on Tuesday, vice-president of Badminton Association of India (BAI), TPS Puri, told TOI that the association is finding ways to tackle this menace. BAI had banned a Karnataka player for two years last November.

"We are in the process of finding proof against fraudulent players. So far we have identified five players and as per the national sports code, we have directed the state bodies to take action," Puri said. "If the state bodies don't take action, our legal team will do the needful."

BAI has also formed a committee to monitor the age fraud issue. "We have formed an 'age monitoring committee'. It's a five-member body which will look into the complaints. The committee will start functioning after it gets approval from the executive committee next month," Puri said.

BAI has also issued guidelines to the state associations making them responsible for verifying the certificates of the players. "We have sent a circular to all state associations. We asked them not to issue BAI ID without verifying their birth certificates. If the year of birth and year of registration is different we have told them not to issue the BAI ID," Puri said.

The parents' association, which is fighting the age fraud menace, has submitted proof of 16 others players being overage. "We got hold of their original and fake birth certificates and submitted them to BAI. We want BAI to refer this issue to CBI like it happened in table tennis," said Nilesh Prabhu, an aggrieved parent.
