Jwala Gutta rings in Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year is an important celebration in the Gutta household. But this year, it was a low-key affair. "My mom is away in China, and she rang in the new year on Wednesday with her mother," says badminton champ Jwala Gutta, who credits her good looks and gutsy nature to her Chinese roots.

Jwala's mother Yelan, who hails from Tianjin, North China, came to India as a 17-year-old and remained here after she met Kranti Gutta, Jwala's father.

"Today, she is as Indian as she is Chinese," says Kranti, who named his younger daughter Insi, which is short for Indo-Sino.

NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

Jwala: For me it's all about food. My mom's whole fish platter with oyster sauce is my favourite.

Kranti: She is an awesome cook. She even makes amazing idli, dosa and sambar.

AN INDO-SINO FUSION

Insi: My name reflects my Indo-China connection. In that sense, I am more Chinese than Jwala!

Jwala: Insi actually knows Mandarin, but I can barely distinguish between the sound of Mandarin, Japanese and Korean.

KEEPING THE TRADITIONS ALIVE

Jwala: I have been to my mom's place to visit my grandmother and my two uncles just once, in 2002. My grandmom likes to gift me things in red because it's believed to be auspicious and bring luck. So, even the first chaddi I got from my grandmom was red.

Insi: my uncle and aunt sent me a red jade with a goat on it from China this year. This is the year of the goat, and since I am a 'goat', wearing red is supposed to ward off bad luck.
