NAGPUR: City's challenge in badminton discipline of the 35th National Games at Ernakulam, Kerala, ended with the loss of Arundhati Pantawane and Rasika Raje in the women's singles quarterfinals.

Fourth seed Arundhati was unlucky to lose the match against Madhya Pradesh teenager Shriyanshi Pardeshi. The city shuttler won the first game 21-19 and was leading 19-16 in the second when she twisted her knee and had to retire from the match.

The unfortunate injury happened when Arundhati was just two points away from entering the semifinal, which could have ensured at least a bronze medal for her. In the last National Games at Ranchi, Arundhati had won the gold medal for Maharashtra.

Earlier, Rasika Raje lost against top seed and local girl PC Thulasi.

Results (Quarterfinals)

1-PC Thulasi (Kerala) bt Rasika Raje (Maha) 21-13, 21-14; Shriyanshi Pardeshi (MP) bt 4-Arundhati Pantawane 19-21, 16-19 (retired).
