VIL is keen to provide Arundhati and Rasika much-needed financial assistance from this year.
Although no official deal has been signed between VIL and the players, the company has committed to bear the expenses of travelling, lodging and boarding arrangements of both Arundhati and Rasika whenever they play national and international tournaments.
Chairman and managing director of VIL, Arun Lakhani, father of national-level badminton player Sarang, was instrumental behind this agreement. Lakhani has been recently co-opted as the member of the Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA) executive committee.
VIL was the main sponsor during the state-level tournaments held in Nagpur during the last couple of years.
"VIL has always supported various social causes. With Sarang in badminton, we know personally all the players and their parents. Avinash Pantawane Sir (Arundhati's father) has been a mentor for Sarang during his initial years in badminton. Arundhati and Rasika are highly talented players and have a great future. Supporting these Nagpur players is a matter of pride for VIL," Lakhani told TOI on Tuesday.
The development even made chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand very happy. Arundhati, Rasika and Sarang all train at the Gopichand Academy at Hyderabad for the last several years.
"It's nice that Sarang's father has come forward and is helping the duo. This will help both these girls in their career. With a sound financial support, they can now concentrate on the game. Both these girls are playing well and hopefully produce better results in future," Gopichand told TOI.
"Rasika and Arundhati performed well in the last few months but they lack consistency. This sponsorship will probably boost their confidence. Now, they can travel freely and play more tournaments. Participating in more international tournaments will improve their rankings and make them better players," added Gopichand.
The 25-year-old Arundhati, who was earlier supported by Gracelands, is world No. 71.
Southpaw Rasika, 19, started playing international tournaments only last year and has a low ranking of 269. The BAI ranking of Arundhati is No. 3, while Rasika is placed at No. 10.
