After drawing the second and third round against lower ranked opponents, this was Gupta's second victory in a row and also the most impressive in the five games that he had played so far in the tournament.
The King's Indian defense from Tazbir was a mild surprise for Gupta who had not prepared for it and went for a popular set up in the Classical system.
Tazbir, having little experience in it, fell for the intricacies and allowed the Indian a major bind on the queenside with white calling the shots all over the board.
Tazbir was saddled with an extremely passive position in the middle game and even the exchange of pieces could not dilute the immense pressure he was put through. Slowly but surely, Gupta made progress on the queen side, tightened the noose and crashed through at the first opportunity to take his tally to four points.
Grandmaster and BPCL colleague, S Arun Prasad matched Gupta on points after a fine victory over Andrey Sumets.
Playing white, Arun Prasad showed his positional prowess to romp home.
Vladimir Onischuk of Ukraine emerged as the sole leader on five points scoring his fifth victory in a row at the expense of Igor Kovalenko of Latvia.
Playing white, Onischuk was in top form as he played a fine attacking game out of a Caro Kann defense to score his fifth successive victory here.
Renier Vazquez Igarza of Spain holds the second spot solely on 4.5 points after beating Erwin L'Ami of Holland while Gupta and Arun Prasad are in the joint third spot now with 15 others including top seed Li Chao of China.
Among other Indians in the fray, Sahaj Grover let go of a drawn endgame and went down to Konstantin Landa of Russia.
Having done the hard work to reach what should have been an easy draw as black, Grover fumbled in the opposite coloured Bishop endgame with his clock ticking away.
Grover along with Vidit Gujrathi, Sandipan Chanda and G N Gopal is now on 3.5 points sharing the 20th spot.
There are four rounds still remaining in the 30000 Euros prize money tournament.
