Mumbai shuttler Pawar won the first game but lost the plot towards the end of the second game. Leading 18-16, Pawar failed to deliver the knockout punch as Sakai survived with a four-point burst. Top seed Kidambi Srikanth too advanced, beating Denmark's Emil Holst 14-21, 21-15, 21-18. Sai Praneeth was to take the court later on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, Jayaram continued to extend his good run at this tournament. The unseeded Indian, who faltered at the All England championship last week, dumped 13th seed Wei Wang in just 35 minutes. After shocking world No.15 Hu Yun of Hong Kong in the first round, Jayaram trounced Yuhan Tan of Germany late on Wednesday.
The world No. 43 Indian was delighted with his good run in Switzerland. "I am happy to win so convincingly. In fact, I had beaten him at the All England last week and had employed the same strategy today.
I was quick from the start and played aggressive badminton. I should continue this positive approach," Jayaram told TOI after the victory. He will now face Sakai, who accounted for Pawar in the last 16 clash. Though Jayaram has a 1-1 record against Sakai, the latter emerged victorious when the duo met at Macau Open in November. "It'll be a competitive match tomorrow. Hopefully, I should come up with another good performance against Sakai," Jayaram said. Meanwhile, Indian challenge ended in the doubles as the two teams suffered first round losses.
Saina regains World No. 2 spot
Riding on her commendable performance at the All England Championships, Saina Nehwal regained the World No. 2 spot in the latest rankings released by the Badminton World Federation.
"I am happy to regain my position as number two in the world. I will work hard and try to become the No. 1 soon," Saina said.
