"I just lost focus and began hurrying, which was not right," Saina Nehwal told news agencies after her loss in Birmingham.
And the flummoxed World No 3 tried to find a reason for her 'choke'. "Playing against top players anything can happen at any stage, and you can always get nervous at some point in time. That's what happened here," she added.
It was a case of so near yet so far as the World No. 3 Indian failed to emulate her long-time coach Pullela Gopichand (2001) and legendary Prakash Padukone (1980), who had won the prestigious title in the past.
But it had not looked like that in the run-up to the All England, a much-coveted event she has been participating in and trying to win since 2007.
Saina has an enviable reputation of being one of the hardest working shuttlers on the international circuit. Male players may buckle under the rigours and demands of a coach like Gopichand, but Saina is known not to shy away from the grind.
Yet, while that attitude has helped her, it has affected her adversely on a few occasions as well. Unknown to her trainers and coach, Saina would hit the treadmill at home after returning from her training. No one knew that she was doing this only until she got injured tripping on the jogger. She missed a few days of crucial practice after that minor accident.
Many expressed doubts about her future after she decided to leave Gopichand and train under Vimal Kumar. But the people who know Saina had little doubt about her progress. She went to Bangalore to prove a point and practiced with vengeance, working tirelessly and at times practiced by facing three men shuttlers on the other side of the court.
In a way, the reversal at Birmingham came early in the season and should prove no more than a mere blip for Saina who knows a thing or two of putting such disappointments behind her.
