Up against Kosintseva, the Indian girl fought valiantly in the tie-break games before losing in the Armageddon game from a winning position.
After drawing both the games under normal time control, it was time for some games in the faster time control and Mary Ann proved she was up to the challenge.
Losing the first game under rapid chess, the Indian equalised and then even took lead in the ensuing 10-minutes blitz game before Kosintseva restored parity yet again.
That set the stage for the bllitz games with five minutes to both players with a three second increment after every move is made. Here too the Indian took the lead winning the first game but lost again in the return to set up the Armageddon game.
At the toss, Mary Ann chose white which means she had to win with her five minutes on the clock while Kosintseva, with four minutes was only required to draw to proceed to the next round.
The Indian started confidently against the Sicilian Dragon and calculated precisely to win a piece in the middle game. Kosintseva could only watch helplessly as white made further inroads with a pawn thrust that forced the Russian to part with her queen.
Mary Ann, however, lost track of the ticking clock when she had to play fast. The Indian eventually lost on time in what was a thrilling affair.
Other Indians in the fray, top seeded Koneru Humpy and D Harika already made it to the round of 32 with an identical 2-0 victory over Ayah Moaatz of Egypt and Tatev Abrahamyan of United States resspectively.
In the next round now, Humpy will take on Tingjie Lie of China while Harika has a tougher opponent in Irina Krush of United States.
The Women's World Championship this year is a 64-player knockout tournament and the winner will earn the right to challenge reigning champion Yifan Hou of China in a match slated in 2016.
