Top seed Srikanth staved off a stiff challenge from a much improved Jayaram to reach his maiden final. After faltering in the first game, the World No. 4 made good ground in the second game before edging out his senior pro 17-21, 21-15, 21-18.
The unorthodox Hyderabadi exhibited great fighting skills and grit as he once again silenced Jayaram. The Mumbai shuttler, who is better known for missing out on the London Olympic berth to Parupalli Kashyap at last minute, played brilliantly and almost knocked out Srikanth.
Jayaram, who lost about eight months due to a shoulder surgery last year, is trying to perk his ranking up so as to qualify for the Rio Olympics. The lanky shuttler, who trains under Tom John in Bangalore, is showing great signs of improvement in the last few months. He won the Dutch Open in October and has been consistently doing well.
However, on Saturday, he was up against a player, who is very difficult to understand and quite different from the rest. Jayaram knows this and had started with an all-out attack. He secured an early 12-6 lead and continued to keep Srikanth in check.
Srikanth got into rhythm in the second part of the game. From 7-13, Srikanth reduced the lead to 13-10 but Jayaram was in great touch and pulled ahead to clinch the issue at 21-17.
The 27-year-old was playing well even in the second game and was cruising ahead at 12-8. But everything changed after the mandatory break as Srikanth came up with a seven-point burst to lead 15-12. Thereafter, he dominated the match. From 15-13, he widened the margin to 18-13 before winning the game at 21-15.
Srikanth dominated for most part of the third game. Though Jayaram tried hard till the end, he was unable to catch up with Srikanth.
"It was a tough match and took three games. Jayaram played well. I am not thinking anymore about it. I am happy with this victory and reaching the final," said Srikanth, who will meet the winner of the other semifinal between second seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and Xue Song of China.
Ruing his lost chance, Jayaram said, "Mid way through the second set I let off the pressure a bit and Srikanth capitalised on that. Definitely disappointed not to convert this into a victory. But I have a lot of positives to take away from this tournament."
