Swiss Open: Srikanth, Pawar, Sai enter pre-quarters

HYDERABAD: Justifying his top billing, Kidambi Srikanth thrashed Dieter Domke of Germany 21-10, 21-14 to reach the pre-quarterfinals of the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold in Basel on Wednesday.

Anand Pawar and newly-crowned national champion Sai Praneeth joined Srikanth in last 16.

While Pawar staged a comeback after losing the first game against Daren Liew of Malaysia 13-21, 22-20, 21-16, Sai had it easy against Beryno Jiann Tze Wong 21-11, 21-13.

Pawar was on the brink of losing his second round match but the Mumbai shuttler fought back gallantly to pull off an improbable victory.

After losing the first game without offering much fight, Pawar was just one point away from being knocked out of the tournament. Things were not easy for Pawar even in the third game as Liew stayed close till 16-15.

However, Pawar managed three consecutive points from 18-16 to take the issue beyond Liew. The world No. 53 will now face Kazumasa Sakai of Japan in the pre-quarters on Thursday. Meanwhile, Srikanth took just 25 minutes to oust Domke. The German proved no match for Srikanth on Wednesday.

Such was the dominance of Srikanth that Domke hardly came close to the Indian. In the next round Srikanth will meet Emil Host of Denmark, who downed Joshua Magee of Ireland 21-16, 21-10.
