KUALA LUMPUR: After clinching successive titles last month, world no. 4 Kidambi Srikanth lost in the second round of the Malaysia Super Series Premier on Thursday, going down to China's Tian Houwei 14-21 18-21 in a men's singles match.

On a high after winning the Swiss Grand Prix Gold and India Super Series last month, Srikanth suffered a blow today as he failed to counter Tian's game.

The Chinese opened up a narrow 4-1 lead early on and even though Srikanth had clawed back at 5-5, he couldn't pose a genuine threat to his opponent in the first game.

In the second game, Srikanth had made a positive start but he blew a 7-3 lead as Tian caught up with the Indian at 10-10 and then managed to keep his nose ahead till the end to shut the door on the world no. 4.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, too, suffered a loss in the second round, going down fighting 23-21, 8-21, 17-21 to sixth seeded Indonesian pair of Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Greysia Polii in a close to an hour match.
