SHANGHAI: When seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer's run was stopped one week short of American Pete Sampras' world record of 286-weeks as the world no.1, it looked unlikely that Federer would regain his numero uno status again. Earlier in the summer Federer delivered a double whammy, proving everyone wrong, winning Wimbledon and with it the world no.1 ranking.

Federer said his fall from the no.1 position came too quickly. "Back then, it seemed that I was stopped all of a sudden," he said, "I was stopped one week short, I didn't expect that, but it happened. The record didn't mean much to me then because anyway I have so much respect for Pete. It didn't matter if I had the record or not at that moment. It wasn't that I was retired from tennis anyway. I accepted it, but when you lose the no. 1 ranking you want to get it back right away. That was the plan, but obviously I had to wait for some time."

The 31-year-old world no.1, who is the top-seed in the Shanghai Rolex Masters 1000, said, "It was much sweeter to get it back (after all that time) and that it came with the Wimbledon crown. I tied with him (Sampras) that week and in the following week I went ahead of him. It was very unique, perhaps one of the greatest accomplishments of my career."
