Van Gaal named as United's manager

Written By Unknown on Senin, 19 Mei 2014 | 22.58

LONDON: Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal will take over as the new manager of Manchester United after the World Cup with Ryan Giggs as his assistant, the club announced Monday.

Van Gaal, 62, has signed a three-year contract to succeed David Moyes who was sacked in April after a disastrous run of results.

His contract with the Dutch national side means van Gaal will not be able to join up with United until after the World Cup in Brazil, which would not be until mid-July if the Netherlands reach the latter stages of the tournament.

Van Gaal, a disciplinarian who has won domestic titles and cups with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well as the Champions League, will become the first manager from outside the British Isles to take charge of United.

He quickly emerged as the favourite to take over at Old Trafford after Moyes was dismissed.

Giggs, United's record-appearance holder and a player-coach under Moyes, was placed in caretaker charge of the team after the Scot left Old Trafford.

Moyes was the handpicked successor of former United manager Alex Ferguson after his compatriot retired as British football's most successful boss at the end of last season.

But the former Everton manager struggled to adjust to life at Old Trafford and was dismissed just months into a six-year contract after United failed to qualify for next season's Champions League.

India lose 2-3 to Korea in Thomas Cup

NEW DELHI: India's campaign at the Thomas Cup badminton tournament came to a premature end, following 2-3 defeat of the men's team against Korea at the Siri Fort Sports complex on Monday.

India needed to win all their singles matches and skipper Parupalli Kashyap and RMV Gurusaidutt produced brilliant performances but young Kidambi Srikanth failed to win the first singles early in the day.

India will play their inconsequential third tie against Germany on Wednesday.

The home team did not get the start they were looking for as world number 18 Srikanth squandered a one-game advantage to go down fighting 21-17, 12-21, 18-21 to the world number nine Wan Ho Son in an hour and 11 minutes-match.

B Sumeeth Reddy and Manu Attri did try their best and led 18-14 in the first game but they let the opportunity slip and eventually ended with a 18-21, 17-21 defeat against Yeon Seong Yoo and Yong Dae Lee, as India lagged 0-2.

Captain of the side, Kashyap kept his team in the hunt with a comfortable 21-17, 21-14 win over Lee Dong Keun in the second singles.

However, the doubles pair of Akshay Dewalkar and Pranaav Jerry Chopra lost 16-21, 16-21 to world number four combo of Kim Sa Rang and Kim Ki Jung within half an hour in the next match as India lost the tie 1-3.

Gurusaidutt once again came up with a stellar performance to register a 24-22, 21-13 win over Hwang Jong Soo in the third singles as India finished with a 2-3 scoreline.

Playing the first singles, Srikanth was leading 8-2 in the first game but Wan soon tried to dominate and clawed back to lead 11-10. The Indian found his rhythm back after the interval and used his down the line smashes to march ahead and reached the game point with Wang hitting long. He hit one wide but grabbed the next point to pocket the game.

In the second game, Srikanth and Wan fought tooth and nail to move together till 7-7 when the Korean moved ahead and opened up a 13-8 lead and eventually roared back into contest without much ado.

In the decider, Wan opened up a two-point lead at the break and continued his good run to once again surge ahead to 15-10 and then 19-14. Srikanth tried to turn things around with a few points but Wan kept him at bay to help Korea log their first point on board.

Gurusaidutt once again produced a gritty performance in the third singles as he held his nerves in crucial moments, especially in the first game to come up trumps.

From 10-10 to 20-20, both the shuttlers were engaged in a fierce battle of attrition but it was Guru who had the last laugh when at 22-22, he came up with two brilliant net shots to earn the bragging rights.

In the second game, Guru didn't break much sweat as he led 5-1 initially and went into the interval with a 11-7 lead.

He kept the Korean on a tight leash even after the break and earned a eight-point match point when Hwang hit long. He sealed the match in the next chance to bring some smiles back to the Indian camp.

World Cup would be a party, not protests

Sitting in his office in a federal building in Brasilia, Aldo Rebelo is a busy man. As Brazil's minister of sports, Rebelo is the point person for the government to oversee the preparations for the Fifa World Cup 2014. With less than a month before the first game will kick off in Sao Paulo on June 12, Rebelo, a leader of the Communist Party of Brazil, is working overtime to ensure that the Home of Football is able to organize the biggest sporting spectacle without any problems. In an interview with Shobhan Saxena at his office in Brasilia, the minister spoke about the problems, challenges and promises of hosting the world cup. Excerpts from the exclusive interview:

Brazilian President DilmaRousseff has promised this tournament to be a "Cup of Cups"". Nowwe are just weeks away from the World Cup. How well prepared is the country to host the event?

I believe that when Brazil was chosen to host the World Cup 2014, the organizers knew that we were quite capable of organising it. Brazil has hosted a World Cup earlier as well, in 1950. We prepared for that Cup within a record time and with great success. It would have been perfect but for the defeat in the final against Uruguay. Brazil is the sixth or seventh largest economy in the world. It is now a country with a sophisticated infrastructure and a network of airports, ports and metro cities which are used to stage big events and receive tourists from around the world. In Brazil, we already have big football stadiums. For a long time, we had the greatest football stadium, Maracana. We have built new stadiums, reformed some old ones, expanded some airports, improved the urban transportation in some cities and improved the security to protect the public, delegations and tourists. I think, therefore, that we will have a World Cup up that will meet the expectations of the world and Brazil, within the conditions that the country can offer.

But we keep hearing about delays in stadiums. There have been deaths of workers in some host cities. There have also been protests and strikes in response to mishaps in stadiums. Isn't this a big cause of concern?

In most stadiums, there have been no accidents. There have been accidents only in Brasilia, Manaus and Sao Paulo. Other stadiums were constructed without any mishaps. On account of accidents, work was suspended or stalled for some time and this delayed the delivery of some of these stadiums, especially in Sao Paulo. Anyway, of the 12 stadiums, six had already been delivered in 2013 for the Confederations Cup. Of the remaining six, five have already held events and games to test lighting, hydraulic and electrical equipment. The only stadium that had not made a test event is the Corinthians (Sao Paulo), but even that happened over the weekend.

On the eve of the World Cup draw, you had admitted that there are cases of violence in Brazilian cities. How well is the government prepared to tackle this problem as hundreds of thousands of foreigners would be coming over?

At that time, I spoke about a particular form of violence -- the violence of common crime against individuals. Brazil is free from other kinds of violence that is produced by national, religious and ethnic resentments, and which produced some of thetragedies in sporting events like the Munich Olympics, where athletes were kidnapped and murdered without the German security been able to prevent it. Then there was the Atlanta Olympics in the US, where there was an attack inside the Olympic Park and it caused fatalities. There was a big concern in Russia just before the last Winter Olympics because of a series bombings in a city. Brazil has a low-level risk for this type of violence but has a high level of risk for common street crime. We are reinforcing our security to prevent such violence and to better protect the public, tourists and delegations. I think the tourists will be safe in Brazil.

In recent months, there have been some demonstrations against the World Cup. More are being planned during the tournament. Do you think it will affect the World Cup?

The number of protests and protesters has declined quite substantially. Today, we have some small protests as people do not want rioting, vandalism and assaults that have marked the protests in Brazil in recent months. The Brazilian Constitution protects peaceful demonstrations. The same Constitution prohibits vandalism or violence. The demonstrations are treated according to the law. Peaceful demonstrationsare allowed, but violent ones are prohibited. But I think, theWorld Cup will happen in a party-like atmosphere and not in the middle of demonstrations and protests.

What's causing these demonstrations? Do you think there is a deliberate effort by some to destabilize the preparations and hosting of the World Cup?

In today's world, there are many vested interests and hidden agendas. We can't prove that there is a manipulation to undermine the country or harm the government. But we have to be prepared for everything. I don't think it's possible to have demonstrations that can destabilize the country or the government. In fact, it were violent protests that inhibited the peaceful rallies. People moved away from streets. People want a better life. They want to improve the health, education, transport and security, but violent protests do not help these causes. So, I think, people walked away from the protests because of violencethey even became much smaller in size.

As an emerging country, how much will Brazil gain from hosting the World Cup?

The World Cup is not only the biggest sporting event on the planet, it is also a great business opportunity. It is also a chance for a country to demonstrate its capacity to hold big events. The World Cup and the Olympics are two such events. There are studies by private consulting firms which say that the complete cycle of the World Cup in Brazil can generate up to 3.6 million jobs. A study done by a firm for Ernst &Young, says that the country's economy will have an added growth of 0.4 % per year until at least 2019 as a result of the World Cup. Moreover, there will be gains from taxes, with sporting and non-sporting tourism taking place across the country. This will happen not only in the World Cup host cities but also in training centers where various teams will stay before and during the tournament. Brazil will gain a lot economically with the hosting of the World Cup and then the Olympics in 2016.

What would be the long-term benefits for the country, especially for football and other sports, as a result of such a huge investments in this event?

We're creating sports infrastructure not just for football. After the world cup, we will have modern stadiums in major Brazilian cities. The brand value of football clubs will be valued more with the new arenas as they will have more income. Football will have greater contribution in the economy and the Brazilian football will contribute more to the world football economy. Today, we are exporting players. We want to export sports services too. But in addition, the government is investing in the country's sports infrastructure for sport education. We are building Olympic facilities in federal universities. We are providing sporting facilities to thousands of schools. With these great events, Brazil is educating the public about the importance of physical activity and sports activity as health practices. This is a long-term gain.

The event is also an opportunity for Brazil to showcase its soft-power. What are you doing to make sure that the tournament shows the best of Brazil and not the worst?

We have 8.5 million square miles of land, 16,000 km of border with 10 different countries, but our borders are completely pacified. We have 8,000 km of coastline, without a single rock or island being claimed by anyone else. We are a country with 200 million people speaking the same language, with an almost absolute ethnic unity, a mixed population without any national or religious hatred or resentment. We are country that despises racism and religious intolerance. The great civilizing asset of Brazil is tolerance, co-existence and fusion. We are all somehow the European, African and indigenous at the same time. We don't reject any of these identities. But at the same time, we are also a country with severe disabilities. We're still a very unequal country, although we have in recent years adopted the most ambitious program of direct cash transfer to the poor. We are a country with deficient infrastructure in education and health, but these deficiencies can be corrected within a relatively short time. So, we do not need to make an effort to show what we have. They are clearly visible. We will not make any effort to hide our weaknesses. We will make efforts to correct them and overcome them while enjoying the World Cup and the Olympics.

India had qualified for the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, but could not make it as they could not afford shoes. As fellow-BRICS members, Brazil can help India in improving its football standard. Are there any plans for such cooperation?

Unfortunately, no important steps have been taken for such cooperation. It would be a very good idea for Brazil and India to cooperate in the field of sports, with football as an important reference. But we still have not progressed in this field. But I have a lot of interest in doing so. Any such cooperation would be a very good thing for football and for India and Brazil.

What are Brazil's chances of winning the World Cup at home?

Brazil are the favourites to win this World Cup because we have a very good team. We have high quality players like Neymar. In Felipe Scolari, we have a very experienced coach who is able to organize and motivate the players. And we have a unique advantage over other countries -- the support of our passionate fans. This is an extra motivation for our players. For this reason, Brazil is the favourite, though big teams like Argentina, Germany, Uruguay, France, Spain, England andItalyalso play football of great quality.

United great Giggs ends playing career

LONDON: Ryan Giggs announced Monday he was retiring from his career as a player following his appointment as assistant manager to newly-installed Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.

The 40-year-old one-club man revealed his decision in an open letter to supporters published on United's website.

His statement signalled the end of the career of English football's most decorated player with Giggs, the winner of 34 major trophies, bringing down the curtain on a 23-year career featuring a United record 963 appearances.

"Today is a fantastic day for Manchester United," Giggs, caretaker manager for the final four games of the season after the club sacked David Moyes, wrote.

"Louis van Gaal is a great appointment and let me begin by telling you how delighted I am to be working with someone of his calibre. His credentials are second to none and I'm positive the club will thrive under his leadership over the coming years."

Giggs, who thanked United's backroom staff and his family for all their support since he made his United debut as a 17-year-old in 1990, said his prevailing mood was one of optimism.

"For me, today is a new chapter filled with many emotions -- immense pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement towards the future," the former Wales international explained.

"United fans I hope will share and echo my belief that the club, the management and owners, are doing everything they can to return this great club to where it belongs, and I hope to be there every step of the way.

"To the greatest fans in world football, thank you, I have loved every minute of playing for you and representing the biggest and best club in the world."

Giggs was one of the most celebrated players to emerge from the Old Trafford 'Class of 92' that won the FA Youth Cup.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was in no doubt about the winger's place in football history, saying: "Ryan Giggs has been one of the greatest players ever to wear the red shirt of Manchester United.

"What he has achieved will never be equalled in the English game. "In the way he played, he was the embodiment of a Manchester United player -- fast, skilful, entertaining and determined to win by playing exciting football.

"He is at the start of an exciting new chapter in his and the club's life but now is the right moment to reflect on the achievements of the finest British player of the last 25 years."

Lampard named England vice-captain

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 18 Mei 2014 | 22.58

LONDON: England manager Roy Hodgson has announced that veteran Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will be England's vice-captain at this summer's World Cup finals.

The 35-year-old Stamford Bridge icon, who has scored 29 goals in 103 appearances, was captain when England were last in Brazil a year ago, one of six occasions he has skippered the side.

"Frank Lampard is vice-captain," Hodgson said. "Frank's been the vice-captain all along in Steven [Gerrard]'s absences, which I think has been two, he's stepped up quite brilliantly.

"I've always thought that he was going to be a key member of this 23 (squad) because of his experience and what he brings to the team apart from pure footballing ability.

"He brings a lot of other things to us in terms of his leadership qualities and characteristics."

England will start their World Cup campaign against Italy on June 14 before further Group D clashes with Uruguay and Costa Rica.

Serena beats Errani to retain Rome title

ROME: World number one Serena Williams warmed up for the French Open by cruising to her second straight Rome Masters title on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Sara Errani of Italy.

Errani had been looking to become the first Italian winner of the women's event in 29 years.

But with six previous defeats to her American rival, her bid was always going to be difficult and was hampered after she picked up a thigh injury at the end of the first set.

Despite plenty of support from a partisan crowd on Central Court, Errani was overwhelmed by the power of the 32-year-old Florida resident.

Williams broke Errani in the second game of the first set and although the 10th seed came back to break in the seventh game, she failed to hold serve in the next, allowing the American to serve out for the set.

Errani appeared to have injured her leg when she failed to go for a Williams return which allowed the defending French Open champion to break for a 5-3 lead.

Shortly after, the Italian called for the physio. She had strapping applied to the top of her thigh, however it did little to reignite her bid to become the first Italian woman since Raffaella Reggi in 1985 win the Italian Open.

Williams continued her domination in a completely one-sided second set to claim a deserved straight sets win in 1hr 12min.

It was all too much for Errani who broke down in tears at courtside.

Nadal set to battle Djokovic in Rome final

ROME: World number one Rafael Nadal will battle Novak Djokovic for his eighth Rome Masters title on Sunday after sweeping aside Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Defending women's champion Serena Williams, meanwhile, will meet Italian Sara Errani after beating Serbian 11th seed Ana Ivanovic 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Djokovic, the number two seed, had ousted David Ferrer 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Friday when Nadal came through a tough clash with British number one Andy Murray.

But the Serbian, the world number two, was stretched over two tight sets by Canadian Milos Raonic, whose serves were regularly coming in just under the 230 km/h mark, before outlasting the eighth seed in a one-sided third.

"I can't recall the last time when I was feeling so helpless returning, even his second serves," said Djokovic.

The pair's only previous meeting came last year when Djokovic beat the Canadian 7-6 (7/1), 6-2, 6-2 in a Davis Cup semifinal rubber.

A year on from that win, Raonic, 23, left a much bigger impression on the six-time Grand Slam champion.

"He did surprise me with his movement, especially given his size, and he's got variety in his shots. You could feel the improvement in his game," he added.

Djokovic's efforts in a three-hour slug-fest with Raonic may have given the edge to Nadal, who despite playing late on Saturday made light work of Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in a 6-2, 6-2 win on Centre Court.

Statistically, the Serbian also has plenty of ground to make up on Nadal on the Spaniard's preferred surface of clay.

Overall, Djokovic has won 18 of the pair's 40 previous encounters, including the last three although they came on hard courts.

Of the duo's 16 meetings on clay, Nadal has won 13 including their last meeting on the surface at the semifinals of the French Open in 2013.

Earlier, Errani booked her place in the women's final to maintain her hopes of becoming the first Italian woman to win the tournament in 29 years.

Errani, seeded 10, had upset China's number two seed Li Na 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 on Friday and went on oust Serbian sixth seed Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 7-5 in their semi.

"It was quite difficult out there, Sara played a great match and credit to her," said Jankovic.

"Overall it was a difficult day, I gave my best but there are a lot of things I could have done better."

Errani, 27, was ousted from the semifinals last year by Victoria Azarenka, who went on to lose last year's final to Williams.

But she admitted the home support was so intense she had to concentrate hard.

"I've never felt something like the before. The crowd were giving me so much support that it almost put me off," said Errani.

Raffaella Reggi was the last Italian woman to win the Italian Open in 1985.

But Errani is likely to need more than a partisan crowd to boost her on Sunday. The pair have met six times, and Williams has won on every occasion.

Williams, however, said: "She's improved, she taken her game to a different level. I have a lot of work to do tomorrow, she has nothing to lose, she has the crowd behind her."

Like Nadal, Williams is honing her French Open form, and she added: "The crowd won't be a problem. It's a sort of warm-up for going into the French Open where the crowd is so intense, so I think this is the best thing I could have to get ready for that."

Premier League defends workplace

The Premier League defended its working environment on Sunday, saying it remained committed to treating all staff fairly following the scandal over sexist emails sent by chief executive Richard Scudamore.

Football Association board member Heather Rabbatts, who will chair an FA inclusion advisory board (IAB) meeting on Tuesday to examine the case, accused the Premier League of having a "closed culture of sexism" after it was revealed Scudamore sent sexist emails to friends.

But the Premier League said in a statement: "We do not recognise this characterisation of the working environment at the Premier League, nor do we believe that it can be supported by the facts."

An audit and remuneration committee, led by Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, will meet on Monday to discuss the case.

"The Premier League continues to be fully committed to treating all staff fairly and on merit, regardless of gender," the statement said.

"The chief executive has already apologised for any offence caused and a proper review of all the evidence is now under way within the Premier League's established and rigorous procedures."

The 54-year-old Scudamore, who according to media reports earns some 1.2 million pounds ($2 million) a year, took over as chief executive in 1999. He has helped make the Premier League the most lucrative in the world with global TV rights worth more than five billion pounds ($8.4 billion) over three years.
