No one can question my patriotism, Leander Paes says

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 30 Oktober 2014 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: A day after sports ministry made it clear that athletes who remain unavailable for national duty would not get financial aid from it, top tennis star Leander Paes said his commitment should not be questioned since he has given his all in the last 24 years while playing for India.

Ministry had not named any athlete but it was clear that the reference was to tennis players who skipped the Incheon Asian Games to play on ATP tour to salvage their rankings.

Paes said he was not aware of the whole story so he cannot comment much but his patriotism is beyond doubt.

"I have not heard about it so it's not right for me to comment. But I have played six Olympics and I don't have to say more about my commitment," Paes told Times Now.

"It's very clear to see, I love playing for the flag and the people. When I play at Grand Slams, I play for India, for flag and for people," the 41-year-old player said.

Paes, who has been a hero of India's many memorable Davis Cup victories, said "At the end of the day, I have to do my job and earn my living and I am focussed on my job, winning more Grand Slams. I have done my bit in the last 24 years not just for myself but also for the people," he said.

Asked if the ministry has been unfair to him by questioning his commitment, Paes said, "I have not heard (ministry's version) and I don't want to comment. I have tremendous respect for the Sports Minister. My job is to play hard and I will continue to do so. A lot goes into winning Grand Slams and Davis Cup."

Paes also clarified that he has not received any financial aid from the government since 2012 London Olympics.

He concluded by saying that playing for the country was a "great joy for an athlete".

AITA had backed the tennis players, saying their commitment should not be questioned.

SRK sad for not being able to buy Kolkata ISL team

KOLKATA: Disappointed that he could not buy the Kolkata franchisee of the Indian Super League football tournament despite best efforts, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he could not bring himself to buying another city.

"I will say something which is unfortunate and sad for me. I really very much wanted to be a part of ISL and I wanted to own a football team but there was no way that I would have got Kolkata and if I can't have Kolkata I can't have any other city," he told reporters here last night.

Khan, who also co-owns IPL franchisee Kolkata Knight Riders, said he had met everyone involved to buy the Kolkata ISL franchisee which was eventually bought jointly by former cricketer Sourav Ganguly, businessmen Harshavardhan Neotia, Sanjiv Goenka, Utsav Parekh and Spanish club Atletico Madrid.

"I was offered every other city but I said I won't do it. If I can't have Kolkata as a football team then I won't play football for life," he said.

He, however, congratulated Ganguly, with whom he shared bitter-sweet vibes during IPL.

"More deserving than me is 'dada' (Ganguly) and he should have it and I can't compete with him...I wish 'dada' and everyone in the championship. I hope it does well."

He said the team is in better hands than him and would do well.

"Even today when I was flying down I felt very sad that I don't have the football team of Kolkata. I started IPL because I was told that IPL will extend into soccer. My love is for football. I play football, my son plays football and my daughter is the captain in football," the actor-producer said.

"If we play football we have to play for Kolkata, you don't play for any other city. I have all my love for Mumbai and Delhi but the city I back is Kolkata," Khan said.

Advani clinches World Billiards title, bags 3 Grand Doubles

LEEDS: India's most celebrated cueist Pankaj Advani clinched the World Billiards Championship (time format) title to bag a record 12th world crown and also complete a rare 'Grand Double' post his third win in both the long and short formats in the same year.

Bangalore's 'Golden Boy' set the green baize on fire as he humbled England's rising star Robert Hall 1928-893 in a one-sided contest to hand his mother, Kajal, a perfect birthday gift on Wednesday. He had won the 150-up format last week after defeating Peter Gilchrist.

Hall, who had got past Advani's citymate Balachandra Bhaskar in the semifinals, could not stand up to the Indian ace and the Englishman's maiden final appearance ended on a disappointing note.

But it was all smiles for Advani, whose third grand double makes him the only billiards player to achieve this feat. Advani, 29, surpassed Mike Russell, who had won the double in 2010 and 2011.

Advani's previous grand doubles were in Malta in 2005 and in his hometown in 2008.

Saving his best for the last, which is often synonymous with Advani, he led 746-485 with the help of a 185 break in the first session of the five-hour final.

On resumption, the Indian ace fired in breaks of 94, 182, 289 and 145, adding a whopping 1000 points in under two hours. Advani then went into overdrive making the match a foregone conclusion with over hour left on the clock.

On how he was able to turn things around in the second session, Advani said, "With a 260 lead in the first half, I knew I had things under control. But Hall has the ability to come back so I decided that I was going to score as much as possible on each visit. I spoke with my brother Shree who was following the match online. A couple of tips from him did the trick too."

When asked about the multiple records, a thrilled Advani said, "I don't know what to say. The way I feel makes words seem incapable of truly depicting it. I worked really hard on my game and fitness, both physical and mental before coming here (to Leeds) and it definitely paid off.

"I'm on my way to Sheffield today to get billiards out of my system and switch to snooker in order to prepare for the IBSF World Snooker Championship happening next month in Bengaluru."

On winning his 12th world title on his mother's birthday, he said, "This win is truly special. Apart from the dozen world titles and the third grand double, the main reason for it being so special is because it was won on my mother's birthday. She is my rock. Happy birthday Mom! Hope you like your present."

For Saina Nehwal, it is always about playing for India

NEW DELHI: In the wake of sports ministry's diktat of not to extend financial help to athletes who prefer professional commitment over representing India, ace shuttler Saina Nehwal insisted her first priority would always be to play for the country.

"I don't think anyone would not want play for the country. Everyone would want to play for the country. Sometimes you can't ignore that there is injury or a player goes through some difficult situation. Otherwise, I am sure everyone would want to play for the country and for the pride of the nation," said Saina on the sidelines of an event organised by USHA at the Delhi Golf Club.

The ministry's diktat came after top tennis players like men's number one Somdev Devvarman, veteran Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna refused to participate in the Incheon Asian Games, citing loss of rankings points on the ATP circuit.

Asked how difficult it is to balance playing for the country and prize money events, the London Olympic bronze medallist said, "In the prize money event also you are not going there just as a player. You play at the state level, then national level and finally you reach the international level. So at that level, you only play for the country. It is not about prize money or medal, it is only about your country."

Saina, however, refused to comment when she asked specifically about top tennis players' decision to opt out of the Asian Games to compete in ATP and WTA events.

"I can only talk about myself and for me it is very important to play for the country," she insisted.

Meanwhile, Saina said she was extremely happy with the year 2014 where she won two titles -- India Open Grand Prix Gold and Australian Open.

"I have done very well this year. I have two titles and obviously the players whom I have lost to are only the top three players in the world and there is no one else who have defeated me this year.

"I am sure one good win and next year will be even better. But if I get some three to four weeks of training, there would a lot of change in my game," said Saina.

Hat-trick of titles for Harinder, double for Dipika Pallikal

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 29 Oktober 2014 | 22.58

CHENNAI: Harinder Pal Sandhu helped himself to his third title and Dipika Pallikal her second on the trot in the four-leg JSW Challenger Squash Circuit here today.

Harinder defeated the top seeded Egyptian Karim Ali Fathi while top seeded Dipika accounted for second seed Misaki Kobayashi of Japan. Both won in straight games and the way they went about for victory had a similar ring to it.

Both Dipika and Harinder effectively snuffed their opponents out with some tight play. Having had a good outing in the semi-final, Dipika was in the right frame of mind from the first point. Keeping the returns long and ensuring Misaki does not get any leeway to make gains, Dipika reeled away points to get into a strong position. Misaki too did not help her own cause with repeated unforced errors, mostly trying to find the area above the tin with a drive or boast.

The Japanese however worked up a good fight in the third game and for the first time earned a handy lead too. But Dipika was not one to lose pace. She used the angle shots to good effect and variations in returns also helped her ensure Misaki did not run away with a big lead. As the game reached the business end, Dipika forged ahead and there was no stopping her from there.

"As a junior I had lost to her. She is not an easy opponent. I ensured she did not design any comeback," said Dipika.

Harinder too continued from where he left in the semi-final when he scalped another Egyptian. But then Fathi was a different customer, one whose reach was commendable and who could use the court well. Rallies featured in the initial play with each point that Harinder got triggering loud cheers in the indoor hall.

The overwhelming support for Harinder possibly unsettled the Egyptian who tended to slip. It helped Harinder though as he tightened his returns, kept pushing Fathi on the backcourt. Mixing the drives and drops well the Indian could evoke mistakes in Fathi and slowly but surely the Egyptian caved in.

The brief fight in the third game notwithstanding, Harinder worked his way to victory. "It feels great to be playing at my best. It all started with the gold medal performance in the Asian Games and I am hoping to continue like this. Hopefully these three title wins should help me jump in my ranking this year. I am thankful to all my coaches in ISA for this wonderful run in form," said Harinder.

The results: final: PSA: Harinder Pal Sandhu (Ind) bt Karim Ali Fathi (Egy) 11-8, 11-3, 11-6; WSA: Dipika Pallikal (Ind) bt Misaki Kobayashi (Jpn) 11-6, 11-2, 11-8.

Sania Mirza excited to be in Federer's team in IPTL

HYDERABAD: On a high after winning the WTA Finals doubles crown and a clutch of prestigious titles this year, Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza says she is now bracing up for the International Premier Tennis League where she would in the same team as Swiss veteran Roger Federer.

"I think it is going to be great for this region to have such great tennis players come out and play. I think I am personally excited to be in the same team as Roger Federer. I am looking forward to that. I think it is a great format and hopefully it is going to click," she said in an interview.

The IPTL features four franchise teams, including India, and is scheduled to start towards the end of next month. The IPTL matches would played between star-studded teams comprising the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Pete Sampras among others.

Sania she was able to meet her targets for this season. "To finish off the season like this, it's good. Basically, I achieved what any tennis player wants to achieve in a year, win a slam, win a gold medal and win the India championships. It has been an incredible year for me," she said.

"Especially, to finish off the partnership (with Cara Black) this way, on such a high, winning the way we did in the final. It has been pretty amazing," she said.

Sania and Cara notched the WTA Finals title with a stunning 6-1, 6-0 victory over defending champions Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai in Singapore last Sunday.

The 27-year-old said she has had an "extraordinary career" so far.

"It's definitely been an extraordinary career for me. If someone told me I was going to achieve all this, 10 years ago, I would have taken it with both hands. It's been a dream come true. It is still going on. I am living my dreams. So, I feel very blessed," she said.

She said she would like to work towards becoming world number one soon.

"It should never be enough. As athletes, we should never be satisfied. There is so much out there to win. I definitely want to achieve a lot more. I definitely want to get number one hopefully before I retire. But also, try and win a women's doubles Grand Slam next year. There is so much left to achieve. Till I have that hunger, I will keep trying," Sania said.

Sania said the tennis scene in the country is looking up, especially in the men's category with several talented youngsters coming to the fore.

"I think it is improving. It definitely has. I think the interest has gone up. I think the infrastructure is better. As you can see, we have an academy like this (Sania Mirza Tennis Academy on the outskirts of Hyderabad). It was never there when I started playing.

"But, we still have a long way to go to compete with the world's best. This is the most global sport in the world, probably the most competitive. You have to keep working. There is no easy way out. I hope there is some other woman before I retire who comes out and takes my place.

"I think the men are in a better position than we are. We have a good set of boys who are playing well. In the Asian Games, we went with the second string teams in the men and we still came back with five medals. They have Yuki (Bhambri), they have Somdev (Devvarman), who is of course a bit older now. There is Sanam Singh, there is Saketh (Myneni). There are a few good guys" she said.

Sania expressed happiness over Prime Minister Narendra Modi wishing her after the WTA Finals triumph.

"He (Modi) has wished me a few times in the recent past. He is definitely very encouraging towards athletes and sports people. They had the opportunity and honour to meet him a couple of times. He is very encouraging both the times. He wants sports to grow in the country. That is very good news for India," she said.

Want funds, stay available for India: Ministry to athletes

NEW DELHI: Taking exception to top Indian tennis players who were reluctant to compete in the recent Asian Games, the sports ministry on Wednesday said individual players will be able to avail grants from it only if they undertake to be available for India whenever called upon.

The ministry's diktat comes after top tennis players such as men's number one Somdev Devvarman, veteran Leander Paes, and Rohan Bopanna refused to participate in the Incheon Asiad, citing loss of rankings points on the ATP circuit.

India were forced to send a second-string team to the mega-event because of this.

The ministry had earlier issued instructions in this regard on July 18, 2013 to all recognised National Sports Federations.

"It is again reiterated and made clear to all recognised NSFs that individual players will be able to avail grants given to them by the ministry only if they undertake to play in the Indian team when called upon to do so without reservations," a sports ministry release stated.

"If there are specific exigencies because of which they are unable to play, this should be verified by the concerned NSF which thereupon can make an exception at their discretion," it added.

The sports ministry release, however, did not name the players who opted out or showed reluctance to play for India at the Incheon Asiad.

But it minced no words in making it clear that athletes, who decide not to take part in multi-disciplinary events where India participates for medals, will not be considered for funding from the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF).

"It was noticed, while finalising the Indian contingent for the Incheon Asian Games 2014, that senior and rank holding sportspersons of some sports disciplines decided to pull out, preferring to play in prize money tournaments instead of participating in the Asian Games giving the impression that such sportspersons do not take these sports competitions seriously.

"Multi-sports events are held once in four years and the nation takes pride in the number of medals won in these prestigious sports events," the release added.

Murray on brink of World Finals after defeating Benneteau

PARIS: Andy Murray turned in a clinical performance on Wednesday as he joined Stan Wawrinka, David Ferrer and Milos Raonic in the next round of the Paris Masters.

The two-time Grand Slam winner, who was absent last year after undergoing back surgery, overcame the challenge of French world number 28 Julien Benneteau and advanced to the last 16, 6-3, 6-4.

The 27-year-old Scot will now meet either Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov or Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay for a place in the quarter-finals.

If Murray, who won his third tournament of the season at Valencia on Sunday, wins his next match he will guarantee qualification for the World Tour Finals in London for the seventh straight year.

Murray dictated play with pinpoint accuracy and although Benneteau put up some second set resistence the result was never in doubt.

Also on Wednesday, world number four Stan Wawrinka snapped a three-game losing streak as he qualified for the third round with a 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) victory over Dominic Thiem.

The Swiss 29-year-old came through a tight match in 1hr 36min against the Austrian to book a meeting with big-serving South African Kevin Anderson.

"I'm trying to find my confidence, I have some victories but I know that my level of game is there. What I still miss is winning matches," said Wawrinka, who won his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January and admitted he was somewhat surprised by his recent rise into the top five.

"I'm so happy, I didn't think I would be able to be ranked so high, but I had ups and downs. In the summer I didn't play very well and I had bad moments, although I did well in the US Open.

"I wouldn't change anything and I know I have a good level of game. I know things can change quickly; I can lose first round and I can also go very far in a tournament, so the important thing is really to concentrate on improving my level."

Former champion and fourth seed David Ferrer also advanced as he subdued the talents of rising Belgian star David Goffin 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to set up an all-Spanish third round tie against Fernando Verdasco.

Earlier on the third day of the penultimate tournament of the season, Canada's Milos Raonic kept alive his chances of qualifying for the World Tour Finals with a tough three-set win over American qualifier Jack Sock.

The number seven seed needs to win the tournament in Paris to guarantee his place in the elite eight-man field to take part in the season finale, which begins in London on November 9.

He scraped through against world number 44 Sock, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7/4) in just over two hours.

Awaiting Raonic in the third round will be Roberto Bautista-Agut, who knocked out Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-2.

Later on centre court, world number two Roger Federer makes his much-anticipated debut in his second round match against another Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy.

Federer comes to the French capital less than 500 points behind Novak Djokovic in the race for the season-ending world number one spot.

There are a maximum 1,000 points on offer at Bercy for the champion while the World Tour Finals offer 1,500 points.

Federer can also close ground or overtake the Serb, who won his second round match over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Tuesday, when he plays the Davis Cup final for Switzerland against France, starting on November 21 in Lille.

Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori will take on Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo later in the day while Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils are in action against Austrian Jurgen Melzer and American John Isner respectively.

Olympic sports can learn a lot from cricket: Rahul Dravid

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 28 Oktober 2014 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Batting on a different wicket as member of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOP) initiated by the Ministry of Sports to increase India's medal tally, former captain Rahul Dravid said that Olympic sports can learn a lot from cricket and vice versa.

"Sport is sport and performance at elite level is performance at elite level. There is a lot that cricket can learn from performances of other athletes. There is lot of sharing of knowledge. There is lot that other sports can learn from cricket. It's not generally about specific lessons. I think specific lessons in specific sports are sometimes unique to each sport," said Dravid after attending a meeting at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center, here today.

Part of the eight-member team of elite sports-persons to identify and help prospective medal winners from across India for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, Dravid expressed surprise at being part of the elite group including MC Mary Kom, Pullela Gopichand, Anju Bobby George and Abhinav Bindra but is optimistic about Indian sport moving in the right direction.

"I have been involved in an international sport for so long and I guess have an idea of what it takes for international athletes to be successful. I am not sure why I was invited on the committee but it's the kind of opinion that they want. I obviously am not going to comment on shooters or badminton players or athletes. For that we have Abhinav, Gopi and Anju with much more knowledge," said the only non-Olympic sportsman in the panel.

"There is no doubt that things are improving in Indian sport even outside of cricket. We are getting a lot more medals at the international level and at the Olympics. So this is a great initiative. It supports the top athletes and that's how it's done all over the world and an elite athlete needs lot of support to compete at that level against the best players of the world," added India's top batsman.

Running the show as chairman of the programme, BJP MP and Indian Olympic Association vice-president Anurag Thakur thanked the ministry for the putting the scheme under National Sports Development Fund (NSDF).

"I think it's a good idea. We had a very successful first meeting where we looked at the names. And also looked at the system, which needs to be adopted of how to train the trainers as well as implement the scheme successfully and also bring in a lot of transparency and accountability into the system, so that we can increase our medal tally in the coming time," said Thakur.

After an 'amazing' 2014', Sania Mirza targets number one spot

HYDERABAD: Having ended a successful year with victory in the WTA Tour Finals, Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza has set her sights on becoming the doubles world number one next season.

"That's pretty amazing. People expect that much of me and wish so much for me. Like I said, I am getting closer to my goal which is to try and be number one in the world. I got a Slam this year, won the Championships. That's one of my goals. So, I will try and be number one. Hopefully, that will happen next year," she told reporters here.

Sania won the prestigious WTA Tour doubles title with Zimbabwean Cara Black in Singapore, a mixed doubles title at the US Open besides winning the mixed doubles gold at the Asian Games.

She said the year has been "incredible" for her. "To finish off the season like this, it's good. Basically, I achieved what any tennis player wants to achieve in a year, win a Slam, win a gold medal and win the year-end Championships. It has been an incredible year for me. Especially, to finish off the partnership (with Black) this way, on such a high, winning the way we did in the final. It has been pretty amazing," she said.

She said the secret of her success is hard work and nothing else.

"There is no secret, unfortunately. You have to work. You have to keep working. As long as you keep working, it will come. It does not happen overnight as people think and hope that it happens. It has been a long career for me. I have been doing it for 21 years of my life. I cannot think of doing anything else at least at this point of time. When you are down, you have to work even harder. That's when you come through," she said.

Replying to a query, she said she felt great when Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her on her win.

"He is an extremely dynamic personality. He is a great leader. I met him twice now. He tweeted to me a few times which is very exciting. Whenever I win, he is extremely encouraging. I think that is amazing for a Prime Minister to take notice of an athlete and encourage them," she said.

Asked about the controversy she went through following a Tongans BJP leader's reported comments about being married to Pakistani, she said the controversies only made her tougher.

"I actually want to thank all those people who put me through that. That makes me mentally tough. I think fighting a match point is so easy, than these people that I fight here. It is not just this year. It has been happening for a long time now. I wish them well. They have made me tough. It has also shown how much the country supports me. I think that came out visibly," Sania said about the controversy that haunted her.

She said she respects the decision of Cara Black to end their partnership.

"As tennis players, there are some tough decisions we have to make. I think as tennis players, as athletes, we have to look forward what's happening forward. You have to accept change. I respect her decision. Because, like she said I am at the prime of my career right now. That's her comeback. She already had a baby.

"May be she is thinking of another one. She is planning to go the other way and see where life takes her. I completely respect and understand. I wish her well. Of course, it is really hard, to win the biggest championship in the year and say that this is going to be our last tournament. It's not like we are splitting, because we don't want to play together," she said.

She said she is looking forward to the partnership with Hsieh Su-wei.

"Every partnership, relationship takes time to click. You have to work on it. You have to believe in the partnership. Me and Cara clicked immediately. Su-wei is a great tennis player. We have known each other for a long time. We will work on it. Hopefully, we will click," she said.

Sania said the recent months have been very taxing for her physically.

"It was extremely challenging for me. Last few months, it has been non-stop. It has been so hectic. I was sick before I went to the championships. It is something, you try and push yourself. Emotionally, to make certain decisions, whether to skip a tournament, go and play Asian Games, to come back with a gold from there and then still get into the championships and come back with a win from there. If I would have written a script, it would have been probably this way. It is a kind of living a dream," she said.

She said she and Cara Black have defeated formidable rivals in the finals (Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai) as they never lost a final.

"Our rivals had a 12-0 record in the finals. They had never lost a final together. That was at the back of our head. We were trying not to think about it. Tennis is such an amazing sport and it gives you so many chances to fight. We were almost out of the tournament and we came back. Here we are, winning the tournament," she said.

Sania also felt that the upcoming IPTL would help tennis grow in India and Asia with top players like Roger Federer coming to the country.

"It is going to be amazing to have people like Roger Federer, Serena Williams. People like that to come and play in this country. It is going to be huge. I think that will help tennis to grow in this region. Tennis has grown a lot. But this will probably take it to the next level," she said.

Suspended boxer Sarita Devi now says sorry

NEW DELHI: Seeking to make herself eligible for participation in next month's World Championships in Korea, Sarita Devi on Monday apologized to the International Boxing Association (AIBA) for her conduct during the Asian Games medal ceremony in Incheon last month.

The governing body for boxing had last week suspended the Manipuri boxer along with two coaches - GS Sandhu and IB Fernandes - apart from India's chef-de-mission Adille Sumariwala in a response to Sarita's refusal to accept her bronze medal on the podium.

"I sincerely apologise to you and AIBA for my conduct during the medal ceremony of the Incheon Asian Games," Sarita Devi, who lost to South Korea's Park Jina in the semifinals in the Asian Games, wrote in her reply to AIBA.

"I do accept that the incidents should not have happened and I deeply regret the incidents with a pledge that this will never happen again," the former World and Asian champion wrote in her reply to AIBA's notice. "Realizing my mistakes, I had immediately tendered an apology letter to Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the organizing committee of the Asian Games 2014 and accepted the bronze medal," she said.

"In my 14-year long career, I had never been involved in any act of indiscipline or misconduct both in the national and international arena. I would like to plea to your good office to consider my case and pardon me for the incidents in Incheon Asian Games, 2014," she added.

Sarita's husband said that he was optimistic that the ban on her would be lifted. "While returning from Incheon, we had thought the matter was closed since the OCA had accepted our apology . We did not expect the whole incident to snowball into such a big issue," said Thoiba, adding: "We are highly optimistic that the ban will be lifted and Sarita will get to represent the country in the World Championships.

"Sarita has been training and we are hoping after our reply, AIBA will lift the ban and Sarita will get another chance to prove herself in World Championships," he added.

Meanwhile, the newly-elected Boxing India extended its support to the boxer and on its part appealed to AIBA to revoke the ban."We have extended all support to Sarita in drafting the appeal. We stand by her. We have also appealed to AIBA that Sarita is a senior boxer and is not a habitual offender. Not just Sarita, we have also appealed for Sandhu. He was not even involved in the incident. He has been punished for no fault of his," Boxing India's president Sandeep Jajodia said.

'AIBA has no right to ban me'

New Delhi: India's Asian Games Chef-de-Mission Adille Sumariwala on Monday slammed the AIBA, saying that the boxing world body has gone beyond its 'jurisdiction'. "Who is AIBA to suspend me? I have gone to Incheon as head of Indian contingent. I had done my duty to help out a boxer in my capacity as the head on my country's contingent," Sumariwala said.

I hadn't planned for India, says Nicolas Anelka

PANAJI: There has been some criticism that the Indian Super League has attracted ageing superstars but you cannot say the same about Nicolas Anelka. If not for the ban, Mumbai City FC's French striker could have so easily been playing in the English Premier League. As the Euro 2000 winner prepares to take field in a competitive match for the first time in 10 months after serving a five-match worldwide ban, the striker opens up exclusively to TOI. Excerpts...

It's been almost a year that you last played a competitive match. Are you hungry and determined to play your first game for Mumbai City FC?

Yes, very much. I have been working hard. Now I am happy to be here with the team and I hope the team will be better.

Mumbai City, everyone feels, has the best team on paper but they have lost twice in three games already.

In football, you can never predict who will win. Even if we have a good team, there are other good teams and players in the ISL. It's true we lost two matches but like I always say, the league is not a sprint but a marathon. We have to finish in the top four and we will see what happens once we get there.

You played for 11 clubs in six different countries. At Arsenal, you were just 17 and at Real Madrid, you were surrounded by Galacticos. Where did you enjoy playing most and why?

I played mostly for English clubs and I enjoyed myself everywhere. It was my choice to represent these clubs, and even though I had some hard times in clubs like Real Madrid or even Juventus, I enjoyed my time in Spain and Italy. There is no special (attachment) with any club. I love all the clubs I play for.

You played with several great players at different clubs. Who remains your favourite?

There is only one player who I like and it's Ronaldo, the Brazilian Ronaldo. He is the only one who made me love football more than anyone else.

Your relationship with managers has often been frosty. Who is the manager that understood you the most and brought the best out of you?

I think Arsene Wenger was good for me. He signed me (from PSG) and made me what I am today. He gave me a chance and I took it. After him, I think Kevin Keegan was good. He was a striker, so he understood me well enough. Then I have to make a mention of Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea. He is clever, won everything as player and manager and brings the best out of players. When he speaks, he makes you feel good and, for me, he was special to work with.

Throughout your career, the media has not really been kind to you. Do you believe there are only a few who understand you, and those who don't, have no clue about the kind of person you are?

I do not need to show who I am to the people who do not know me. I am shy, quiet and like spending time with my family. I want to keep my personal life private. The press do not understand that and they want me to be someone else, which I can't be. You cannot force me. That's why they write what they do and I understand it's part of the job. My family and friends know the kind of person I am and that's important to me.

The Indian Super League (ISL) ends in December and the international transfer window opens in January. What do you intend to do after your contract with Mumbai City FC is over?

I have no idea what I am doing next. I left Chelsea after almost 15 years of professional football and I wanted to be more relaxed in my career. There is a lot of travelling, pressure and stress (in professional football) and that's one reason I decided to go to China. Even coming to India was not planned. Something cropped up and I accepted it. May be, I will continue playing but I will see the opportunities and then choose.

Disgraced Nicolas Anelka set for comeback in ISL

Written By Unknown on Senin, 27 Oktober 2014 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Disgraced French striker Nicolas Anelka is set to return to action on Tuesday after serving a five-match ban for a gesture deemed to be anti-semitic and known as a "quenelle".

The 35-year-old former Arsenal, Chelsea, Juventus and Real Madrid star is expected to turn out for his Indian Super League team Mumbai FC against Chennaiyin FC in the southern city of Chennai.

Anelka missed the Peter Reid-coached team's first three matches, in which they beat FC Pune City 5-0 but lost 2-0 to Northeast United and 3-0 to Atletico de Kolkata.

Reid will be relieved at Anelka's return since Mumbai's other top player, Freddie Ljungberg of Sweden, is almost certain to miss the rest of the eight-team league due to a hamstring injury.

"We've got a few plus points for our next game, Nicolas Anelka will be in the side," Reid, the former Manchester City and Sunderland boss, tweeted after the last match.

Anelka won 69 French caps and scored 14 goals in an international career which ended in disgrace when he was thrown out of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa following a row with coach Raymond Domenech.

He was handed an 18-match ban for that bust-up, which effectively ended his international career.

Until he joined Mumbai for an undisclosed fee, Anelka had been without a club since he was fired by West Bromwich Albion early this year for the "quenelle" gesture.

The 10-week ISL is modelled along the lines of cricket's cash-rich Indian Premier League, with veteran, if ageing, former international greats fronting each team.

Boxing India requests AIBA to be lenient on Sarita Devi

NEW DELHI: Requesting the International Boxing Association to revoke the provisional suspension on L Sarita Devi, Boxing India president Sandeep Jajodia on Monday said her unconditional apology and her impeccable past disciplinary record would form the crux of her defence in front of the world body.

Sarita has been provisionally suspended for refusing to accept her bronze medal owing to a controversial semifinal loss at the Asian Games in Incheon. The suspension has jeopardised her chances of participating in the World Championships from November 19 in Jeju Islands, Korea.

AIBA's strict view of her protest on the podium prompted the sports ministry and the Indian Olympic Association to hold a meeting on Monday to chart a future course of action.

"It was a purely emotional reaction and perfectly human for somebody to feel disappointed after a loss. It was not preplanned, it was a natural outburst," Jajodia, who also attended the meeting, said.

"We don't deny that it was disrespectful towards the code of conduct for athletes but she tendered an unconditional apology. Besides, she does not have a history of such an offence and is quite a senior boxer.

"Also, it was a one off incident and we must look at it from a human perspective. They have sought a clarification and it is being sent today," he added.

Along with Sarita, three ringside coaches, including national men's coach Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu, were suspended by AIBA. They will also be filing their reply to AIBA's notice on Monday.

I am sorry, won't do it again: Sarita to AIBA

NEW DELHI: A remorseful L Sarita Devi has pleaded with the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to lift the provisional suspension imposed on her for refusing to accept her bronze medal in the Asiad, saying that she deeply regrets her outburst on the podium and would never repeat it.

Sarita's participation in the World Championships next month has been jeopardized due to the suspension imposed on her for refusing to accept the medal after a controversial semifinal loss in the Asian Games at Incheon.

"I do accept that the incidents should not have happened and I deeply regret the incidents with a pledge that this will never happen again," the former world and Asian champion has written in her reply to AIBA's notice.

"Realizing my mistakes, I had immediately tendered an apology letter to Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Organizing Committee of the Asian Games 2014 and accepted the bronze medal," she said.

Sarita said her impeccable disciplinary record before the Asiad furore should be taken into account when her fate is decided by the AIBA's disciplinary committee.

"In my 14-year long career, I had never been involved in any act of indiscipline or misconduct both in the national and international arena. Being one of the pioneers of amateur women boxer in the world who participated in the first World Women Boxing Championship in the USA in 2001, I would like to plea to your good office to consider my case and pardon me for the incidents in Incheon Asian Games, 2014," she said.

Sarita also insisted that her actions on the podium were not planned and neither were they instigated by her husband or the three ringside coaches, who have also been suspended by AIBA.

"I would like to mention that my husband was unaware of the presence of the AIBA technical delegate and perceived everyone present as Asian Games organizers," she said.

"I would like to state that my conduct during the medal ceremony was not premeditated and was an expression of deep emotional feeling, for which I sincerely apologize once again," she added.

"I hold myself responsible for my actions during the medal ceremony and I was not acting on anyone's instruction. My action did not prompt anyone else to act in a similar manner during the event. The coaches did not influence me in any manner," Sarita explained.

She requested the AIBA to lift the sanction imposed on her.

"I sincerely apologize once again for my conduct and request your good office to lift the sanction so that I can continue the game I live for and love most," she added.

Neymar to surpass Pele's record, says Romario

RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazil's 1994 World Cup winning striker Romario on Monday expressed his admiration towards Neymar, saying that the promising Barcelona player will surpass Pele's all-time scoring record for the Selecao.

Neymar scored four times against Japan earlier this month to take his tally to 40 goals in just 58 appearances for the Selecao, reports Xinhua.

Romario believes that the 22-year-old star has enough time to break the legendary Pele's record of 77 goals in 92 games if he continues his momentum.

"Even though he is still young, Neymar is well aware of what he means for the world of football and for the Brazilian game in particular," Romario told Lancenet on Monday.

He is the one player the Brazilian people believe in and he has everything to make history. He is only 22 and already near Brazil's all-time top goal scorers, if he manages to keep this up, he will surpass Pele."

Romario is currently ranked the third among the all-time scorers of the Selecao with 55 goals in 70 appearances, while Neymar is in the fifth place. Ronaldo and Zico are ranked the second and fourth with 62 and 48 goals respectively.

Jwala Gutta's focus on fitness, 2016 Rio Olympics

NEW DELHI: Top doubles shuttlerJwalaGutta said Sunday that she is focussing on improving her fitness to achieve consistency in performance, to realise her ultimate dream of winning an Olympic medal in 2016 Rio de Janeiro.

"I am happy with my on-court performance. I just need to keep fit. I need to work on my physical strength and overall fitness, otherwise me and Ashwini (Ponnappa) are doing well. We will be training together to achieve consistency in our performances," Jwala said on the sidelines of a Li Ning store opening here.

The 31-year-old withdrew from the Incheon Asian Games due to a knee sprain but followed it up by playing Super Series events in Denmark and France this month.

The Hyderabadi claims to have recovered fully and will play the Hong Kong Open and Macau Open in November.

"Since I am coming back from an injury, after a certain age you need to take care of your body. I can't train as a 16-year-old but I have to take care and build my strength. From now on every tournament is a preparation for Olympics. I am looking at participating in most of the tournaments next year," said the 2010 Commonwealth Games champion.

"All these tournaments will be used as preparation for the Olympics. Next year is very important. In December, we are getting a big break. We will utilise it completely and get ready for the next season."

The southpaw also played down the impact of early exits from the Denmark Open and the French Open, saying it doesn't bother her as she is "feeling good about my game".

"Our performance in France wasn't too bad. We beat World No.11 Eefje Muskens and Selena Peik of Netherlands in the first round so it wasn't too bad," said Jwala, who also has a World Championship bronze to her name.

Jwala also praised the Indian women's team for winning the bronze at the Asiad.

"The women's team played exceptionally well. We should only be proud of them. We know how tough the competition is at Asiad as all World and Olympic champions are from Asian countries," Jwala signed off.

Serena Williams beats Halep to win WTA Finals title

SINGAPORE: Serena Williams beat Simona Halep 6-3, 6-0 Sunday to win her third-successive title at the WTA Finals - and her fifth overall.

Halep easily beat Williams just four days earlier during the group stage of the tournament, but Williams turned that around with an aggressive game plan that unsettled the Romanian player.

Williams won 11 of the last 12 games in the match to join Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf as the only players to have won five titles in the season-ending championships.

The 33-year-old American pulled out of her previous two tournaments with illness and a knee injury, yet still claimed the $2 million first prize.

"I just started training, because I had such a bad knee in Beijing I didn't know if I'd be able to play here, and now I have won the Billie-Jean King trophy - I am so excited," Williams said.

The match was the most one-sided championship match in the WTA Finals since Kim Clijsters beat Amelie Mauresmo 6-2, 6-0 in 2003.

"It was an amazing week so I can't be too sad that I lost," Halep said. "Congratulations to Serena, you are the best."

Halep got the first break of the match in the third game and looked capable of repeating the surprise 6-0, 6-2 victory she recorded over Williams on Wednesday, but in the next game Williams broke back at her third opportunity and the course of the match was set.

Williams changed her game plan from the group-stage contest, attacking Halep's second serve with fierce ground strokes, and regularly rushed the net to cut the points short and prevent the Romanian playing her preferred style.

Williams had 25 winners against just five by her opponent.

Depleted Atletico impress in 1-1 draw against Kerala Blasters

KOLKATA: A depleted Atletico de Kolkata, without star forward Fikru Teferra, put up a spirited show but could not score that elusive winner settling for a 1-1 draw against a lucky Kerala Blasters FC in their fifth ISL encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium, on Sunday.

ISL Points Table

Atletico maintained their top position in the league table with 11 points from five games while Blasters earned their first point in third game.

Baljit Sahni gave the lead in the 22nd minute with a powerful angular right-footer beating David James' outstretched hands.

Minutes later, Atletico could have easily doubled the lead when Jofre gathered a good long ball on the left flank and crossed it to their sole striker Arnal Llibert near the six-yard box but it was blocked by the KBFC defender Cedric Hengbart much to the home team's dismay.

Just when Atletico looked to press further KBFC struck the equaliser from nowhere with former Championship goal poacher Iain Hume again being the scorer, when he converted the opportunity with a smart finish beating a surging Subhasish Roy Chowdhury in the 41st minute of the match.

Luck too deserted Atletico as they failed to bring up the winner despite a superb effort by Baljit who clearly had a field day in absence of their star players.

It was the horizontal that came to Blasters' rescue after a stunning shot by Baljit in the six-yard box went past an aerial James only to hit the woodwork.

There were some last minute drama with Atletico pressing for the winner but the 6 feet 5 inches tall James ensured that Blasters returned with a point.

Suarez move great for La Liga, says Ancelotti

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 24 Oktober 2014 | 22.58

MADRID: Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti believes Luis Suarez's move to Barcelona for a club record fee is a boost for La Liga, despite the damage he could cause to Real's title hopes.

Suarez looks set to make his debut for the Catalans in Saturday's first El Clasico of the season at the Santiago Bernabeu having completed a four-month ban for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

However, Ancelotti insisted he would be making no special plans for the Uruguayan as his presence would not change how his side approached the game.

"I am not here to judge Luis Suarez. He has scored a lot of goals, but it doesn't change our tactics," said the Italian.

"I think for football it is good news that Suarez can play in this league. I don't know if he will play (tomorrow) because it is not my business.

"It is not my problem. Naturally I have a lot of respect for Suarez's quality, but if Suarez plays or not doesn't change their idea of how to play the game and doesn't change ours either."

While Barca will be gaining another world class talent in attack to link up with Lionel Messi and Neymar, Real will be without one of their star trio up front as Gareth Bale misses the game through injury.

"He suffered an injury a week ago and won't be available for tomorrow," added Ancelotti.

"He needs one week to rest and then he will start to train. He is one of the most important players in our squad, last year he was fantastic. It wasn't easy for him at the start but now he feels good, he knows the league and I think he will do better than last season."

Bale's absence wasn't missed as the European champions swept aside Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Wednesday thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Beznema.

Ancelotti recognised that facing the unbeaten La Liga leaders will be a much more serious test of his side's progress in the last couple of months after a disappointing start to the season.

And he believes the arrival of coach Luis Enrique along with a first trophy-less season in six years last year has sparked a reaction from Barcelona.

"All games against Barcelona are very difficult. The two teams are in great form, but I always have confidence, above all for what we did last Wednesday.

"I see Barcelona as a more motivated team because a new coach has come and new players. They didn't win titles last year so they are more motivated.

"I think they are playing more direct in attack and are very solid in defence."

One positive piece of injury news for Madrid is the return of Sergio Ramos. The Spanish international has missed the last four games for club and country due to a calf injury, but is expected to partner Pepe in central defence on Saturday.

"Pepe is OK, like Ramos," said Ancelotti. "He has trained well and totally recovered. I think they are going to play."

Maria Sharapova knocked out of WTA Finals

SINGAPORE: Maria Sharapova finally got a win at the WTA Finals on Friday but it wasn't enough to stop her crashing out of the tournament and blowing her opportunity to be crowned year-end world number one.

The Russian star needed to beat Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets to stay alive but after winning the first set, she agonisingly lost three match points and a tie-breaker in the second.

Second-ranked Sharapova rallied to win the match 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2 but the 2004 champion exits the end-of-season tournament in Singapore after her two earlier round robin losses.

"It's so great to get a win in Singapore. I really wanted it today, it was so tough in that second set. We've always had such tough matches against Radwanska and today was no different," she said.

Sharapova is also now unable overtake Serena Williams and become year-end world number one for the first time, meaning the 18-time Grand Slam-winner earns the honour for a fourth occasion.

Sharapova's elimination brought an end to a disappointing campaign for the Russian, who lost her earlier matches against Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.

Sharapova had a 10-2 head-to-head record against Radwanska going into Friday's match and won their last three meetings, but the world number six was unfazed.

Neither player held serve in the first four games but Sharapova eventually edged ahead and took the set after some furious rallies.

In the second, she had the crucial victory on her racquet but passed up two match points at 5-1 and another at 5-3 before Radwanska forced the tie-breaker and snatched it 7/4.

But the Pole looked a spent force in the third set, enabling Sharapova to save face with her only match win in Asia's first staging of the women's season finale.

Radwanska is also relying on the result of Wozniacki's final round robin match with Kvitova if she is to make the semifinals of the eight-player season finale.

And Williams, shattered 6-0, 6-2 by Simona Halep in her second group match, needs the Romanian to win at least one set against Serbia's Ana Ivanovic later Friday to reach the semifinals.

Wozniacki storms into WTA Finals semis

SINGAPORE: Caroline Wozniacki stormed into the WTA Finals last four on Friday as Maria Sharapova's early exit crowned Serena Williams as year-end world number one for the second season in a row.

Wozniacki battered Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-3 for her third victory in Singapore, a result that eliminated the Wimbledon champion but handed Agnieszka Radwanska a spot in Saturday's semis.

As the season finale's group phase ends, Williams is relying on already qualified Simona Halep to get her into the semi-finals by winning at least a set against Ana Ivanovic later.

But the 18-time Grand Slam winner can already celebrate ending a season on top of the rankings for a fourth time after Sharapova's bid to unseat her came to an abrupt halt.

The world number two needed to beat Radwanska in straight sets to stay in the tournament but after winning the first set, she agonisingly lost three match points and a tie-breaker in the second.

Sharapova rallied to win the match 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, but the 2004 champion exits the tournament after her earlier losses to Wozniacki and Kvitova and now cannot overtake Williams in the rankings.

"I wanted to end this tournament on a win. I'm very proud," the French Open champion said. "It would've been very easy for me to get down on myself.

"I had so many chances being up, having match point, and just saying, 'You know what? I've lost two matches'. Just so easy to just let it go. I didn't, and that's what I wanted for myself today.

"I got the job done. I know I'm not moving forward, but I'm proud of that effort and to finish the year off in this way."

While Sharapova's season is over, Wozniacki's is still very much in play after a win over Kvitova that left her top of White Group as arguably the form player of the tournament.

Super-fit Wozniacki, who is training for next month's New York marathon in lieu of her cancelled wedding to golfer Rory McIlroy, again made all the running as she beat Kvitova in 69 minutes.

"It feels so great. I've been working so hard and it's paying off now," she said.

Sharapova had a 10-2 head-to-head record against Radwanska going into Friday's match and won their last three meetings, but the world number six was unfazed.

Neither player held serve in the first four games but Sharapova eventually edged ahead and took the set.

In the second, she had the crucial victory on her racquet but passed up two match points at 5-1 and another at 5-3 before Radwanska forced the tie-breaker and snatched it 7/4.

However, the Pole looked a spent force in the third set, enabling Sharapova to save face with her only match win in Asia's first staging of the women's season finale.
