Moyes appointed Man United manager

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 09 Mei 2013 | 22.58

LONDON: Manchester United on Thursday confirmed that David Moyes will succeed Alex Ferguson as manager of the club.

Moyes's departure from Everton was announced earlier in the day and United subsequently revealed that he has been awarded a six-year contract at Old Trafford.

"When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes, we unanimously agreed on David Moyes," said Ferguson in a statement, the day after he announced his decision to retire after 26 years in charge.

"David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. I've admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of assistant manager here.

"He was a young man then at the start of his career and has since gone on to do a magnificent job at Everton. There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club."

Moyes, 50, has been at Everton since 2002 and will take over from Ferguson on July 1.

"It's a great honour to be asked to be the next manager of Manchester United," he said in a statement released by his new employers.

"I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done for the football club.

"I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn't something that comes around very often and I'm really looking forward to taking up the post next season."

IPL: Gambhir falls after flamboyant fifty

NEW DELHI: Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir slammed his 20th IPL fifty before being dismissed in their IPL 6 match at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune.

Watch IPL Videos | Scorecard

Gambhir (50) hit 6 boundaries in his gritty innings and helped get the Kolkata Knight Riders off to a flying start before the Knights lost the wickets of Manvinder Bisla and Jacques Kallis cheaply.

After opting to bat first, Gambhir and Bisla put up a swift 45-run partnership for the opening wicket.

However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave Pune Warriors India their first breakthrough when he struck to dismiss Bisla (12) when the Kolkata opener was brilliantly stumped by wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat.

Soon after, debutant Parvez Rasool, who became the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to play in the IPL, got the all-important wicket of Kallis (2) by having him caught by Angelo Mathews at short cover.

Mitchell Marsh got the prized wicket of Gambhir when he had the KKR skipper caught at short mid-wicket by Mathews.

Bhuvneshwar then came back to scalp Yusuf Pathan when the Pune bowler's short of length ball outside the off stump was nicked by the Kolkata batsman to the wicketkeeper.

The Knight Riders head into this match with two changes to their playing XI as Ryan ten Doeschate and Manoj Tiwary come into the team in place Ryan McLaren and Debabrata Das.

On the other hand, the Warriors bring in Rasool in place of Rahul Sharma.

Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders would be looking to restore lost pride when they take on the struggling Pune Warriors.

It will be a great chance for the title-holders, who are virtually out of contention for a berth in the four-team play-offs, to redeem themselves against a side enduring a nightmarish campaign this season.

However, it would certainly not be an easy task for KKR, especially after the thrashing they received at the hands of Mumbai Indians on Tuesday.

Similarly, Pune Warriors cup of woes is also brimming over after they suffered their seventh straight loss against Rajasthan Royals in their previous game.

Teams:

Pune Warriors India: Robin Uthappa, Aaron Finch (Capt.), Yuvraj Singh, Angelo Mathews, Mitchell Marsh, Udit Birla, Mahesh Rawat (wk), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Wayne Parnell, Krishnakant Upadhyay, Parvez Rasool.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Gautam Gambhir (Capt.), Manvinder Bisla (wk), Yusuf Pathan, Jacques Kallis, Rajat Bhatia, Laxmipathy Balaji, Iqbal Abdulla, Eoin Morgan, Sunil Narine, Ryan ten Doeschate, Manoj Tiwary.

Nadal breezes into Madrid quarterfinals

MADRID: Rafael Nadal safely booked his passage into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters as he saw off Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 6-3 in just under an hour and 15 minutes.

The World No.5 started brightly with his forehand in particular doing damage down the line to the Youzhny backhand and he broke the Russian to move 2-1 in front in the first set.

Another blistering forehand down the line opened up another two break points for the Spaniard with Youzhny serving at 2-4 and a cute drop shot at the net secured the double break before two big serves closed out the set in the next game.

An error strewn game from Youzhny then handed the 11-time Grand Slam champion another early break in the second set, but after staving off a break point on his own serve at 2-1, Nadal was broken for the first time in the match as Youzhny levelled at 3-3.

Nadal broke again straight away, though, to ease towards the finishing line and he sealed victory in typical fashion as he scampered to retrieve a Youzhny dropshot before flashing a backhand crosscourt winner past his forlorn opponent.

Is IPL spoiling international cricket?

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 08 Mei 2013 | 22.58

Sometime back, former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga said the Indian Board's financial strength has influenced the International Cricket Council (ICC), which is constantly under the pressure of Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI).

He said the Indian Board's full support for the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a clear indication of spoiling cricket. Ranatunga called the IPL a "monster" that will destroy international cricket. "Money is important, yes, but it shouldn't eventually kill cricket," he said.

Ranatunga, who led Sri Lanka to the 1996 World Cup triumph, said the ICC has become a body which is constantly under the BCCI's pressure.

"The ICC's job is to protect the game. They don't have to favour anyone. He said the West Windies faced a lot of hardship in fielding the Test sides because of withdrawals for IPL. "Have you ever heard that players like Chris Gayle, spin whiz Sunil Narine and all-rounder Dwayne Bravo refused to take part in Test series due to IPL duty? It's ridiculous."

Contrary to his view, the others feel the IPL has boosted the perception and image of cricket among the masses. In spite of all the
controversies and allegations, the IPL has given a new life to many cricketers in india whom we never heard of. It is a big platform for youngsters to showcase their talent.

IPL has thus proved to be a financial windfall for several strugglers - players good enough for competitive cricket but unable to break
through the first-class and Test cricket barriers.

In short, the IPL makes money, the franchise-owners make money, the players make money, and the sponsors and advertisers get millions of viewer eye-balls in return.

'T20 has given cricket a new lease of life'

MUMBAI: West Indies bating great, Sir Viv Richards had once feared that Test cricket will die down a slow death due to low turnout of fans but the advent of Twenty20 format has instilled a fresh lease of life into the game.

"At one point, I felt that Test cricket was dying a death all around the world and especially in India. India was one of the front-runners where attendance at Test matches was the most you could find in the world. And that started to go down at a real pace," said Richards.

"Ever since T20 cricket, it may be a shorter version of the game, but the name doesn't spell differently, it is still cricket. It has given cricket such a new lease of life. There are folks who like Test matches and there are folks, the new clientele, who obviously like T20 cricket, which I think is a great advantage for the game with the kind of followers," the legendary Antiguan said at an event here to felicitate the coaches from Mumbai.

The most destructive batsman of his era, Richards said Test cricket will always remain the "universe" to him and to understand the game and its beauty, the younger generation should go through the rigours of longer format.

"All the administrators and governing bodies now realise that there should be a common understanding for an avenue for which they need the greatest format of the game if you need to understand the game itself, which is Test match cricket. You can't change that. Test match cricket, that is the universe in my opinion.

"The youngsters should understand the game at its fullest in terms of Test matches. When they are successful at that, then there is an avenue also where everyone can represent at IPL, the Big Bashes around the world and I guess you would have a magnificent combination," said the 61-year-old, who is presently the Delhi Daredevils advisor-cum-ambassador.

Richards said he loves Indian vice captain Virat Kohli's aggression on the field and what many people perceive as arrogance is actually his confidence.

"I have always felt what you see as arrogance, I see it as confidence. Virat Kohli has an aggression that regardless of whoever I am going to face, I will have the time over there. It is important to stamp your presence as early as possible, if you want a start," he said.

West Indies were considered as one of the strongest teams in 1970s and Richards said it was the tour to Australia that determined them to win games.

"Growing up, my father used to tell me cricket is a gentleman's game but I soon found out that in Australia it wasn't. We were beaten 5-1. We were called all sorts of names. And it was there and then that Clive Llyod decided enough is enough. We have to take these guys on. If we could get a few guys who could give us a start then we would see what they would be like.

"We found those guys in 1975 and never looked back. It was amazing the same guys who were calling us names were running and looking for a place to hide. It was a pleasurable series that we had against Australians. We had Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall and that just changed the whole aspect of the game," he added.

Richards, who never wore a helmet in his entire 17-year-long career despite playing in an era when fast bowlers loved to bowl bouncers to unsettle batsmen, said he didn't have anything against the protective gear but felt the cap was the biggest honour bestowed upon a player.

"It wasn't anything against the helmet. I have always felt that when you are given a cap with the emblem to represent your country, you wear it on top of your head. Anyone would like to represent their country whether a batsman or a bowler and as a little boy I was given that opportunity to represent my country.

"At that time I thought it was the highest honour that would be bestowed upon any individual. I don't think I would have done that cap any justice, if I had anything else on the head. I felt that proud wearing that cap... I felt God will protect me from whatever I was facing out in the middle," he said.

Asked about his obsession for chewing gums, he said, "It was like my little brother. There were times when you walked into bat and you would forget about it. (In case I forgot) I would make sure before I faced my first ball, I would ask someone to run and get me that chewing gum," he said.

Richards said when he retired in 1991, he felt like dead and buried.

"I felt when I retired in 1991 that I was dead and buried but coming to India I have realised you have kept me alive."

Dravid falls after fiery 50 as RR cruise

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 07 Mei 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane slammed fifties to lead Rajasthan Royals to a thumping 9-wicket victory over Delhi Daredevils in their IPL 6 match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

Watch IPL Videos | Scorecard

The win elevated the Royals into second position in the overall standings with 16 points from 12 matches.

Dravid slammed an impressive half-century to lead the Rajasthan run chase against Delhi Daredevils.

Chasing a 155-run target, Dravid completed his half-century in 45 balls with the help of 7 boundaries before being dismissed by Siddarth Kaul for a score of 53.

Dravid along with Ajinkya Rahane gave Rajasthan Royals a good start when the duo put up a quick-fire 108-run stand for the opening wicket to put the Royals in a commanding position.

However, Kaul broke the partnership when he had the Rajasthan skipper caught at long on by Ajit Agarkar.

Soon after Dravid's dismissal, Rahane too reached his fifty and finished the match with an impressive score of 63* off just 45 balls and had 5 boundaries and a lone six to his credit.

Earlier, a gritty half-century by Ben Rohrer guided Delhi Daredevils to a competitive 154/4 against Rajasthan Royals attack.

Rohrer scored an unbeaten 63 (40) and shared indomitable 76-run stand for the fifth wicket with KM Jadhav, who remained not out at 24 off 21 balls.

For Rajasthan, Siddharth Trivedi, Stuart Binny, Shane Watson and James Faulkner claimed a wicket each.

Opting to bat first, Delhi Daredevils were bamboozled by a fiery Rajasthan Royals pace attack.

Delhi suffered two quick blows early on in the match when they lost opener Virender Sehwag and CM Gautam in quick succession.

James Faulkner struck in his first over for the Royals to dismiss Sehwag (11), who was clean bowled.

In the very next over, Shane Watson forced debutant Gautam (2) to get a wicked outside edge only to be caught behind by keeper Sanju Samson.

Stuart Binny then joined the party when he scalped David Warner (13) by getting him caught by Sachin Baby at short cover.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene then put up a hard-fought innings of 34 runs, which included 4 boundaries and a lone six, before he was dismissed by Siddharth Trivedi.

Delhi have made six changes to their playing XI with Morne Morkel and Rohrer coming in place of Jeevan Mendis and Johan Botha.

Ajit Agarkar, Siddarth Kaul, Pawan Negi and CM Gautam replace Shahbaz Nadeem, Irfan Pathan, Ashish Nehra and Unmukt Chand.

For Royals, Shaun Tait and the 42-year-old leg-spinner Pravin Tambe have come in place of Kevon Cooper and Ajit Chandila.

Teams:

Rajasthan Royals: Rahul Dravid (Capt.), Ajinkya Rahane, Shane Watson, Brad Hodge, Stuart Binny, Sanju Samson (wk), James Faulkner, Shaun Tait, Sachin Baby, Pravin Tambe, Siddharth Trivedi.

Delhi Daredevils: Mahela Jayawardene (Capt.), Virender Sehwag, Muralidharen Gautam, David Warner, Ben Rohrer, Kedar Jadhav (wk), Pawan Negi, Morne Morkel, Ajit Agarkar, Siddarth Kaul, Umesh Yadav.

Dravid, Rahane help Royals beat Delhi

JAIPUR: Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane struck fluent half-centuries as Rajasthan Royals inched closer towards securing a play-off berth with a comprehensive nine-wicket victory against Delhi Daredevils in a Pepsi Indian Premier League match on Tuesday.

Watch IPL Videos | Scorecard | Match in Pics

Dravid led from the front with a classy 48-ball-53, his fourth half-century in this IPL edition, while Rahane played an equally impressive unbeaten knock of 63 as Royals maintained their impeccable record at home. They now have 16 points with eight wins and look like firm contenders for a berth in knock-out round.

Delhi Daredevils, whose season has gone from bad to worse stay put on eight position with six points.

Royals registered their seventh win at home with 13 balls to spare, scoring 155 for one. Shane Watson remained unbeaten on 14-ball 28, laced with three fours and one six.

Dravid and Rahane added 108 runs for the opening-wicket partnership in just 13.4 overs with the former India captain playing the more aggressive knock of the two.

In the process, Royals also registered their highest opening-wicket partnership in this edition of the IPL, surpassing 98 runs against Pune Warriors last week.

For Daredevils, Rohrer hit a fine 39-ball 63 under trying conditions while Mahela Jayawardene (34) and Kedar Jadhav (23 no) also chipped in with useful contributions to help their side post a competitive 154 for four but, in the end, the total did not prove to be enough.

Royals made a confident start to their run-chase with the trusted opening pair of Dravid and Rahane once again providing their team a good start.

Both made short work of Delhi bowlers and enthralled a near sell-out crowd with their vast repertoire of stroke-play.

Delhi's misery was further compounded by their butter-finger fielders when Rahane was dropped by Pawan Negi at extra-cover off Morne Morkel when the batsman was at an individual score of 4.

Rahane made full use of the reprieve and raised a century-plus partnership with Dravid. It was a treat to watch vintage Dravid show as he cut and drove Delhi bowlers to reach his second successive fifty in the tournament in just 45 balls.

The fact that Daredevils made as many as four changes in their bowling department for this game did not come to any help to them as the duo of Dravid and Rahane played them with utmost ease.

Dravid was finally out in the innings' 14th over when he was caught by Ajit Agarkar off Siddharth Kaul at long-on while going for an expensive pull. However, Rahane and Watson ensured that Royals remained invincible at home with an unconquered 47-run partnership for the second wicket.

Earlier, Rohrer put on display some innovative shots to single-handedly guide Daredevils past 150 runs, which looked unlikely at one stage with the visitors struggling at 78 for four.

He found an able ally in Kedar Jadhav (23 n.o., 21 balls, 2x4) and together in his company added an unbeaten 76-run partnership for the fifth wicket. The last five overs yielded 53 runs for the Daredevils.

Electing to bat under scorching heat, Delhi were off to a poor start as Virender Sehwag (11) and CM Gautam (2) were sent back to pavilion in quick succession with scorecard reading 22 for two.

Sehwag looked in good touch, hitting James Faulkner for two consecutive fours, before the lanky Australian pacer flummoxed him with a slower ball which swung in uprooting the off-stump.

Sehwag, as usual, committed himself to the shot a tad too early playing across the line.

Gautam, playing his first IPL match, departed in the very next over as he chased a wide delivery outside his off stump to give a simple catch to wicket-keeper Sanju Samson off Shane Watson.

Skipper Jayawardene held one end strongly and, in the company of David Warner (13), tried to resurrect the innings while picking up a few occasional boundaries. That included four hits to the fence off Shaun Tait's second over.

However, Warner failed to contribute much to the team's cause and was caught by Sachin Baby off Stuart Binny at extra cover just before the first strategic time-out.

Rohrer tried to break the shackles with two successive fours off Mumbai leg-spinner Pravin Tambe, who became the oldest IPL debutant at 41 years and 212 days.

Jayawardene too tried to free his arm and hit Siddharth Trivedi for a six over mid-off before he ran out of patience and gifted his wicket at a crucial juncture.

Jayawardene failed to read the line of the ball and landed Dravid an easy catch at mid-wicket off Trivedi. At 78 for four, Rohrer took the onus on himself and mixed caution with aggression to take the team's total past 150-run mark.

Roger Federer cruises past Stepanek

MADRID: Roger Federer showed little sign of rustiness on his return to action after a two-month break as he cruised past Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-3 to progress into the third round of the Madrid Open.

The World No.2 had suffered from a back injury in his last outing at Indian Wells at the beginning of March, but he looked comfortable on his first appearance on the clay in 2013 against the World No.48.

The 17-time Grand Slam winner got off to the perfect start as he broke in the third game before holding serve to take the first set 6-3.

And Federer broke Stepanek again early in the second set to move ahead 3-1 before breaking once more to serve for the match at 5-2.

However, he was then broken himself for the first time in the match as Stepanek finally took a break point opportunity at the eighth time of asking.

That only delayed the inevitable though as Federer broke again in the very next game to seal the win.

Next up the three-time champion in Madrid will face either 14th seed Kei Nishikori or Victor Troicki on Thursday.

IPL: Mumbai maul Chennai by 60 runs

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 05 Mei 2013 | 22.58

MUMBAI: The Chennai Super Kings juggernaut has been halted. Chasing their eighth win in a row in the Indian T20 league, the two-time champs were humbled by 60 runs by hosts Mumbai Indians on a tricky wicket at the Wankhede Stadium, on Sunday.

Watch IPL Videos | Scorecard | Match in Pics

The win allowed Mumbai Indians to register their seventh win in the league and log 14 points in the overall standings. The result also ensured their domination over the Dhoni-led side at the Wankhede.

In four games here, they are yet to lose to CSK. The win also meant that Mumbai continued their unbeaten home run, notching up their fifth win. They will play Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday night here.

Chasing a target of 140, made largely possible by enterprising knocks of 39 *(30b, 3x4, 1x6) and Harbhajan Singh 25*(11b, 2x4, 2x6) and their unbeaten sixth wicket partnership of 57 runs in 4.5 overs, CSK found the pace of Mitchell Johnson (3 for 27) and Lasith Malinga (2 for 6 in three overs) and the spin of Harbhajan Singh (1 for 13 in four overs) and Pragyan Ojha (3-11 in 2.2 overs) too hot to handle and crashed to 79 all out, their lowest total in the T20 league and the fourth lowest in the history of the tournament.

It seemed for a while that CSK were giving the hosts a lesson in how to play T20 cricket and Mumbai Indians were reciprocating by showing how not to play the format.

As if setting them a modest target wasn't enough, MI gave the table-toppers three gifts in a row in the first over off Johnson. Their best fielder, Kieron Pollard dropped in form Michael Hussey thrice at point. The third of the lot was the simplest and it even cost the burly Trinidadian a bloody nose. He caught the fourth one though to send back Suresh Raina for a first ball duck off the bowling of Johnson.

The slingy left-arm-seamer's second over was an eventful one as it produced three wickets to effectively swing the contest irreversibly in favour of the hosts. He dismissed M Vijay bowled, got Raina caught at point and trapped S Badrinath plumb in front.

MS Dhoni, who has batted up the order throughout the league strangely hid himself in the line-up and even promoted R Ashwin ahead of himself. At No. 7, he couldn't do much when half the side had been polished off.

Ravindra Jadeja, who had an impressive outing with the ball picking three wickets for 29 runs from his four overs, swung his bat around, but the damage had been done. Ojha got the big wickets of game-changers Hussey and Dhoni in a span of two overs and Malinga got Morris and Sharma in one over to finish the contest.

Earlier, it seemed as if MI were crawling their way through as openers Tendulkar and Smith laboured in the powerplay as Morris and Mohit Sharma bowled accurately. But in hindsight, their stand of 40 in 6.5 overs was an indicator of how difficult run-making was on this pitch.

Ten-man Juve secure 29th Serie A title

TURIN: Arturo Vidal's 10th league goal of the season was enough to secure a 1-0 win over Palermo and help ten-man Juventus to their 29th Serie A title on Sunday.

Juventus now have a 14-point lead over second-placed Napoli, who, even in the event of a win over Inter Milan later Sunday, can not overtake the Turin giants in the final three games of the season.

Chilean international Vidal had been Juve's top scorer this season, the attacking midfielder scoring nine in the league and 14 in all competitions prior to Sunday's encounter at Juventus Stadium.

When the hosts were awarded a penalty just before the hour after midfielder Massimo Donati fouled Bianconeri striker Mirko Vucinic in the area, Vidal stepped up to beat Stefano Sorrentino in the Palermo goal.

Vidal was cautioned for over-exuberant celebrations but the goal sent Juventus Stadium into raptures.

Juve's title celebrations were tinged by the late sending-off of French midfielder Paul Pogba, who saw red seven minutes from the final whistle after spitting at Salvatore Aronica following a shouting match with the defender.

Juventus, who won the title in 2012 after being unbeaten in the league the entire season, have lost only four times this campaign.

The Turin giants have now secured one of two spots in Serie A which offer direct qualification for next season's Champions League, with Napoli poised to claim the runners-up spot.

AC Milan, currently third, boosted their chances of claiming the last Champions League third spot after an 84th-minute winner from Mario Balotelli secured a 1-0 home win over Torino.

Yuvraj Singh may find it tough to return

Yuvraj Singh's omission from the Indian Champions Trophy team can be bad news for the left-hander in the long run. The Punjab player, who fought back from cancer, has already been dropped from the Test team and now that he doesn't feature in the ODI team as well might mean the end of his international career.

The new BCCI selection committee has already taken a hard stance and they are looking to make a team for the 2015 World Cup. The likes of Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh had already been dropped and now by dropping Yuvi, Sandeep Patil & Co have given the indication that they are looking to form a new nucleus of the team.

Yuvraj, of course, let himself down during the ongoing T20 tournament when he failed to get going in any of the matches. His fielding, too, hasn't been top class and the selectors might have taken that into consideration as well. The 32-year-old also had his share of injuries of late and wasn't consistent in the chances that he got for India since his return to international cricket after fighting back from cancer.

The likes of Dinesh Karthick and Rohit Sharma, who have been selected for the Champions Trophy, have been extremely consistent in the ongoing T20 tournament, and with the likes of Manoj Tiwary, Kedar Jadhav and Ajinkya Rahane getting better by the day, Yuvi is bound to feel the heat in the days to come.

PV Sindhu enters final of Malaysia GP

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 03 Mei 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Top seed PV Sindhu stormed into the final of the women's singles event at the Malaysia Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament with a straight-game win over Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

Sindhu needed just 34 minutes to get the better of her third-seeded opponent, 21-17 21-11 in the semifinal clash.

The 17-year-old Indian shuttler, who was in a full flow against the Thai girl, will face fifth seeded Gu Juan of Singapore in the final.

Even though she did not have an ideal start in the opening game, Sindhu ultimately stamped her authority by winning a total of 42 points as compared to just 28 won by Taerattanachai.

In the first game, Sindhu was trailing throughout and at one stage she was lagging behind her rival by 10-16 margin. But she got her act together to clinch six straight points to level the score at 16-all before surging ahead to open a 19-16 lead.

While Taerattanachai could win a point more, Sindhu sealed the game at 17.

There was no stopping the Hyderabadi in the second game. She not only opened up a 4-0 lead but kept on increasing the gap to finally close the issue comfortably.

IPL 6: Narine dismisses Watson

NEW DELHI: Sunil Narine dismissed Shane Watson after the Aussie helped Rajasthan fortify their innings against Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eden Gardens on Friday.

Scorecard | Watch IPL Videos

Narine had continued to trouble Watson (35) who was unable to read the spinner. He missed sweeping West Indian and was given LBW.

Watson and young Sanju Samson came together to build Rajasthan innings after losing two wickets early in their innings against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Both the Royals' batsmen had read the situation quickly and took calculated risks to make sure to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Electing to bat, Rajasthan Royals lost James Faulkner (1) and Ajinkya Rahane (6) early against Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL match at the Eden Gardens on Friday.

Iqbal Abdulla dismissed Faulkner (1) soon after Sachithra Senanayake struck in the previous over to reduce Rajasthan to 27/2 in 4.3 overs.

Senanayake gave the hosts an early breakthrough when he outfoxed Rahane in the fourth over.

Earlier, Rajasthan Royals skipper Rahul Dravid won the toss and decided to bat against Kolkata Knight Riders in the defending champions' last league fixture at the Eden.

Rajasthan have made three changes in their team from the last game citing the slow and low wicket at the Eden. Brad Hogg replaced Brad Hodge, Ankit Chavan came in for Ajit Chandila and Dishant Yagnik included in Sreesanth's place.

Hosts KKR have included Sachithra Senanayake and left out Brett Lee for this game, whereas, spinner Iqbal Abdulla replaced pacer L Balaji.

Their campaign in doldrums, Knight Riders would be desperate to register a victory over a consistent Royals.

Midway into the extravagant T20 League, when faltering teams like Delhi Daredevils have started to get their act together, the Knight Riders have refused to learn from the mistakes, with captain Gambhir being adamant in his approach.

The latest of their seven losses was against the resurgent Daredevils who registered their second successive win, third overall, by seven wickets on Wednesday at Raipur.

It was Knight Riders' fifth defeat from as many away games. They now have an uphill task of winning six more matches if they want to earn a ticket to the playoffs.

That they have three away games, including one in Mumbai, and two 'home' games (vs RCB and PWI) at an unfamiliar venue -- Ranchi -- will make the case all the more difficult, and it will be a real test of character for skipper Gambhir.

On the other hand, Rahul Dravid has led the side by example so far and backed his little-known judicious-spending team to perfection, reminding one of what Shane Warne did in their triumphant season one (2008).

Rajasthan's back-to-back victories have earned them 12 points from nine matches and they are comfortably placed at third position in the table.

Shane Watson's red-hot form with the bat -- 101, unbeaten 98 and 41 in last three appearances -- is just coming at the right time. The Aussie vice-captain's contribution with the ball is also providing the team an edge.

The fact that Dravid-led team had a three-day break after their victory against RCB will put them in the right frame of mind as compared to KKR, who travelled to Chennai and Raipur before coming here.

Teams:

Kolkata Knight Riders: Gautam Gambhir (Capt.), Manvinder Bisla (wk), Yusuf Pathan, Jacques Kallis, Eoin Morgan, Debabrata Das, Rajat Bhatia, Sumit Narwal, Sunil Narine, Iqbal Abdulla, Sachithra Senanayake.

Rajasthan Royals: Rahul Dravid (Capt.), Ajinkya Rahane, Sanju Samson, Shane Watson, Stuart Binny, Owais Shah, James Faulkner, Siddharth Trivedi, Brad Hogg, Ankit Chavan, Dishant Yagnik (wk).

Two early wickets put RR in backfoot

Sachithra Senanayake struck again to dismiss Dishant Yagnik (10) in the thirteenth over to reduce Rajasthan to 83/4 in 12.2 overs.

Bangalore elect to bat against Pune

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 02 Mei 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat against Pune Warriors India in their IPL 6 match at Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune.

Scorecard | Watch IPL Videos

Warriors made two changes, bringing in Ajantha Mendis and Angelo Mathews in place of Luke Wright and Kane Richardson.

Pune would be desperate to make amends but they face an uphill task against the star-studded Bangalore.

It won't be an easy task for Finch's boys as they are up against a formidable Bangalore side which boasts of the big-hitting Chris Gayle.

On paper, Bangalore appear to be the overwhelming favourites with six wins in 10 games, while Pune are languishing at the bottom with just two wins in 10 matches.

Pune would be eager to forget the nightmarish experience it encountered the last time these two teams met on April 23, when Bangalore registered the highest team score of 263 and Gayle massacred the bowling to score a record 66-ball 175.

Teams:

Pune Warriors India: Robin Uthappa (wk), Aaron Finch (capt), Tirumalasetti Suman, Yuvraj Singh, Steven Smith, Angelo Mathews, Abhishek Nayar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, Ashok Dinda, Ajantha Mendis

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Lokesh Rahul, Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli (capt), AB de Villiers, Moises Henriques, Saurabh Tiwary, Arun Karthik (wk), R Vinay Kumar, Murali Kartik, Muttiah Muralitharan, RP Singh

Daredevils pacers remove KKR openers

RAIPUR: Delhi Daredevils pacers bowled beautifully to remove the Kolkata Knight Riders openers at the newly- built Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday.

Watch IPL Videos | Scorecard

Knight Riders were in early trouble after losing their openers -- Manvinder Bisla and Gautam Gambhir -- who failed to add much to the scoreboard.

Umesh Yadav bowled a disciplined line and pitched up the ball to Bisla (4) who missed the shot and was bowled out.

Previously, Irfan Pathan had dealt a severe blow to the Kolkata Knight Riders when he ran out skipper Gambhir for naught.

Bisla called for a suicidal run during Irfan's second ball to which Gambhir responded. But the KKR skipper was not fast enough and was run out without even facing a ball.

This was Gambhir's third consecutive failure in this year's IPL.

Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders had won the toss and elected to bat against Delhi Daredevils.

While Delhi made no changes to their line-up, Kolkata made two major changes. Brett Lee comes in for New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum and Shami Ahmed gives his place to Sumit Narwal.

After notching up a morale-boosting victory against the Pune Warriors, Delhi Daredevils will aim to improve their current position.

While Daredevils have lost seven out of their nine games, KKR are not too far behind having lost six games out of nine.

The Daredevils have failed to finish off some close matches this season and their effort against the Warriors was certainly laudable considering the situation they are in at the moment.

The one thing that has been ailing both the teams is the performance of their Indian players which has definitely played a big role in their poor show in the million dollar league so far.

In all, an exciting match is on the cards as it is redemption time for KKR. Daredevils, on the other hand, would look to exact a sweet revenge for their first leg loss against the same opponents.

Teams (from):

Delhi Daredevils: Mahela Jayawardene (captain.), Virender Sehwag, David Warner, Umesh Yadav, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan, Kedar Jadhav, Unmukt Chand, Morne Morkel, Shahbaz Nadeem, Ben Rohrer.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Gautam Gambhir (captain), Brett Lee, Debabrata Das, Eoin Morgan, Jacques Kallis, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Manvinder Bisla, Rajat Bhatia, Sunil Narine, Yusuf Pathan, Sumit Narwal.
