Barcelona transfer ban appeal rejected by CAS

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 30 Desember 2014 | 22.58

MADRID: Barcelona's appeal against a FIFA sanction for an alleged breach of rules on the transfer of foreign Under-18 players has been rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Spanish club said on Tuesday.

Soccer's world governing body FIFA announced in April it had banned Barca from the transfer market for two consecutive windows and fined them 450,000 Swiss francs ($455,000).

Barca denied wrongdoing and the ban was suspended pending an initial appeal to FIFA, meaning the Catalan club were able to buy and sell players in the close season.

FIFA rejected the appeal and the club decided to challenge the decision at CAS, which heard evidence from Barca officials and youth players at a hearing on Dec. 5.

The CAS decision means Barcelona will not be able to sign any new players until January 2016, although the club said it could appeal the CAS decision to a Swiss federal court.

"FC Barcelona considers the sanction as being absolutely disproportionate as it implies an excessive punishment for the club given its track record," the club said in a statement.

Barca president Josep Bartomeu has fiercely defended their "La Masia" academy, which has produced the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta, saying the club have been the victims of a "grave injustice".

"With this sanction, FIFA is punishing a model that has existed for 35 years and which is the essence of this club," he told reporters in April.

Some success, some heartbreak for Indian athletics

NEW DELHI: Moderate success in the Commonwealth and Asian Games was the only high point of a low-profile year in which Indian athletics also had to deal with the heartbreaking story of rising woman runner Dutee Chand being barred from competitions for having more male hormones than permissible.

The year also saw some respite from the doping menace, which had marred the Indian athletics scene in the last few years.

From topping the international body -- IAAF -- list in 2012 and many cases of doping violations last year, the scenario changed this year though the National Anti-Doping list show around a dozen athletes being sanctioned for testing positive for banned drugs this year as well.

On the field, Indian track and field athletes returned with just three medals in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July-August while they still managed to contribute the most to the country's overall tally with a haul of 13 in the September-October Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

The Indians won just a gold, a silver and a bronze in the Glasgow CWG, a far cry from the 12 (2 gold, 3 silver, 7 bronze) in 2010 Delhi CWG. United States-based Vikas Gowda was the star Indian performer as he won the gold in men's discus throw with an effort of 63.64m.

His woman counterpart Seema Punia, however, had to be content with a silver with an effort of 61.61m. She had won the bronze in the 2010 Delhi Games women's discus throw.

Arpinder Singh went into the CWG with a big reputation after leaping to a national record 17.17m at the National Inter-State in Lucknow but returned with a bronze after a below-par effort of 16.63m.

In the Incheon Asian Games, the Indians won one more medal than the 12 they collected in the earlier edition in Guangzhou in 2010 but the gold count reduced from six to two.

Punia established herself as the top woman discus thrower in the country by winning the gold in Incheon with an effort of 61.03m.

Gowda, on the other hand, once again finished second behind his old nemesis and defending champion Ehsan Hadadi of Iran to settle for silver. The Indian has done better than the Iranian only once in 17 clashes he had in his career.

India continued their stranglehold in women's 4x400m relay event in the Asian Games as the quartet of Priyanka Pawar, Tintu Luka, Mandeep Kaur and M R Poovamma ran a brilliant race in Games record time of 3:28.68. This was India's fourth gold on the trot.

Khushbir Kaur (women's 20km walk), Manju Bala (womens' hammer throw), Vikas Gowda (men's discus throw), Tintu Luka (women's 800m) bagged a silver each while bronze winners were M R Poovamma (women's 400m), Rajiv Arokia (men's 400m), O P Jaisha (women's 1500m), Naveen Kumar (men's 3000m steeplechase), Annu Rani (women's javelin throw) and Inderjit Singh (men's shot put).

Doping menace receded from athletics, which in the last couple of years was turning into the dirtiest sport in the country, with no major positive case coming up this year.

India still has 19 athletes in the IAAF list of dope offenders. India were on top with 44 dope offenders in 2012.

Elsewhere, it was heartbreak for young Dutee Chand, who was barred from taking part in any event under IAAF's hyperandrogenism policy. She was found to have higher levels of androgen (hormones that play a role in male traits) above permissible limits for a female athlete in a test conducted in Bangalore.

Dutee, who won two gold in the Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Chinese Taipei, was banned by the AFI from taking part in any event. The 18-year-old Odisha sprinter from a humble background challenged the AFI decision and the IAAF's hyperandrogenism policy itself in the Court of Arbitration for Sports in Switzerland with the legal cost borne by the Sports Authority of India.

CAS recently gave an interim order, allowing her to take part in national events pending a final decision and she is likely to participate in the National Games in Kerala beginning January 31.

For former star long jumper Anju Bobby George, the year turned out to be a memorable one as her second place finish at the 2005 Monaco World Athletics Final was upgraded to a gold medal following a dope violation by a Russian competitor Tatyana Kotova.

Anju became the first Indian track and field athlete to win a gold medal in a major world event. Kotova's dope sample collected during the 2005 World Athletics Championships in Helsinki was found to contain traces of banned substance.

The IAAF had re-analysed the samples in line with International Olympic Committee's decision to retest eight-year old samples, dating back to 2004 Athens Olympics in order to deter dope cheats.

Woman 3000m steeplechaser Sudha Singh's silver medal at the 2013 Pune Asian Athletics Championships was upgraded to gold after Ruth Jebet, who won the race, was declared ineligible to represent Bahrain on nationality grounds by the IAAF.

A few of the Indians won medals in top international events including discus thrower Gowda's silver in the prestigious IAAF Diamond League Series in Doha. Gowda hurled the discus to a distance of 63.23m, finishing behind Poland's Piotr Malachowski, who took the top spot with a throw of 66.72m.

Khushbir Kaur and Gurmeet Singh won a bronze each in the men's and women's section respectively of the Asian 20km Walking Championship in Nomi, Japan.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni retires from Test cricket

MELBOURNE/MUMBAI: Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Tuesday surprised the cricket world with his sudden announcement of immediate retirement from Test cricket, making way for Virat Kohli to don the mantle of captaincy.

Announcement of Dhoni's retirement after the wicketkeeper-batsman had played in 90 Test matches, 60 of them as captain, was made immediately after India lost the current Test series to Australia following a drawn third Test here.

"One of India's greatest Test Captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the Test Rankings MS Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test Cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of Cricket," the BCCI said in a statement.

READ ALSO: Dhoni's decision comes as a huge surprise: Gavaskar

"MS Dhoni has chosen to retire from Test Cricket with immediate effect in order to concentrate on ODI and T20 formats. BCCI while respecting the decision of M S Dhoni to retire from Test Cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test Cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India," it added.

India, trailing 0-2 in the four-match series after today's draw, would be led by the 26-year-old Kohli in the fourth and final match in Sydney. Kohli has been India's standout performer with the bat in the ongoing series, having scored three hundreds so far.

"Virat Kohli will be the captain of the Indian Team for the Fourth and Final Test against Australia to be played in Sydney from the 6th of January 2015," the BCCI stated.

The 33-year-old Dhoni, however, did not speak about his retirement at the post-match press conference or at the presentation ceremony. The announcement was made through a BCCI press release.

The BCCI statement was a bolt from the blue as Dhoni, despite his poor overseas track record as captain, had not given any indication that he would step down in the near future.

Dhoni's captaincy record since June 2011

Opponents Matches Wins Lost Draw
England 5 1 3 1
Australia 3 0 3 0
South Africa 2 0 1 1
New Zealand 2 0 1 1

Dhoni, who led India to an unprecedented two World Cup titles (2007 Twenty20 World Championships and the 2011 ODI World Cup), had been drawing flak for India's poor run in overseas Tests. India have won just six away Tests out of the 30 that Dhoni has captained.

Among the most embarrassing defeats under Dhoni were the 0-4 whitewashes suffered in England (2011) and Australia (2011-12). Besides the team also suffered defeats in South Africa and New Zealand and had been beaten by England yet again this summer.

Yet the wicketkeeper-batsman remains one of the most successful captains ever for India, having led the side to the top of ICC rankings in Tests in 2009.

With the team continuing to perform badly overseas, pressure was mounting on Dhoni to quit the job with former players and critics questioning his defensive leadership in the longer format.

The criticism notwithstanding, Dhoni today became the Indian captain to score most runs in Tests, making 3454 runs, going past Sunil Gavaskar (3449), Mohammad Azharuddin (2856) and Sourav Ganguly (2561).

In 60 matches as captain, Dhoni had a decent 27 wins, 18 losses and 15 draws to show. In the 90 Tests that he was part of, Dhoni scored 4876 runs at an average of 38.09 with six hundreds and 33 50s to his credit.

Dhoni did not play the first Test in the current series against Australia because of a thumb injury. In his absence, Kohli led the team and won accolades for his attacking approach.

Many former players declared that it was time for Kohli to take over the leadership from Dhoni given that the incumbent had been struggling to present any fresh approach.

Dhoni's rise was nothing short of meteoric and he took over the Test captaincy from Anil Kumble in 2008 in 2013, he became the most successful Indian Test captain when he eclipsed Sourav Ganguly's record of 21 victories from 49 Tests.

His record in away Tests may be dismal, but Dhoni proved to be quite successful on home turf, leading the side to 21 wins in 30 Tests.

Asiad gold, Rio ticket highlight of Indian hockey in 2014

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 Desember 2014 | 22.59

NEW DELHI: An Asian Games gold medal after a 16-year hiatus and a direct ticket to the 2016 Olympic Games were some of the high points in what was a rare successful year for Indian hockey even though national coach Terry Walsh's unceremonious resignation provided a bitter ending to 2014.

It was a year of development for Indian hockey as the senior men's team took giant strides towards reclaiming its past glory, which included eight Olympic gold medals.

Besides the Asian Games gold in Incheon, South Korea, the men's team registered several other memorable victories including a historic Test series win against world champions Australia in their own backyard.

Walsh had a rather gloomy start to his coaching stint in India as the senior men's team finished a lowly sixth in the eight-nation Hockey World League (HWL) Final, which incidentally was the Australian's first assignment with the eight-time Olympic champions.

The Sardar Singh-led side looked completely disorganised in the tournament and from their performance in the HWL Final it was quite apparent that they would need time to get used to the coaching methods of Walsh. The only positive that came out from the tournament was a 5-4 victory over Olympic champions Germany.

Indian players pose for a photo after beating Pakistan in the men's hockey final of the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. (AFP Photo)

After taking over the team, Walsh hardly got any time to try out things before his first big assignment, the World Cup at The Hague, Netherlands.

The only platform the Australian got prior to the World Cup was the preparatory tour to The Hague. Walsh used this tour to test his combinations and worked tirelessly on the basic skills and fitness of the players, the results of which started to show slowly as the year progressed.

However, at the World Cup, the team disappointed finishing a disappointing ninth.

Conceding late goals, their perennial problem, continued to haunt India in the World Cup as they suffered close defeats against Belgium and England and drew against Spain before being drubbed 0-4 by eventual champions Australia.

The Indians, however, managed to beat South Korea 3-0 to finish ninth.

With pride at stake and their capability in question, the Indians went to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games determined to prove their critics wrong and they managed to do that to some extent with a silver medal finish.

After taking over, Walsh always stressed on the need to improve as an individual and as a team and the Indians really showed signs of improvement in Glasgow.

India's impressive outing in the Commonwealth Games came against New Zealand in the semifinal as despite missing their inspirational skipper Sardar Singh, the young team came from two goals down to stun the Black Sticks and set up a date with Australia in the title clash for the second consecutive time.

But the mighty Kookaburras yet again proved too strong for India as they produced another clinical performance to bag their second consecutive CWG title.

Under Walsh, the Indian men's team continued its upward journey and managed to break their 16-year-old gold medal jinx in the Asian Games.

India managed to withstand the pressure exerted by hosts South Korea in the semifinal before beating Pakistan in the final to bag its first Asiad gold since 1998.

The triumph was more pleasing as it gave India direct qualification to 2016 Rio Olympics. It was double celebrations for India in the Asian Games as the women's team also featured on the podium, finishing third.

Building on the Incheon success, India defeated Australia 3-1 in a rare series victory Down Under. The series showed the mental toughness of Indian players as they clinched the rubber after being humiliated in the first match.

But the momentum which India gained in the year was lost by the untimely and poorly handled resignation of Walsh.

After guiding the team to the Asian Games gold, Walsh tendered his resignation, demanding an improvement in his pay packet and more decision making powers, most notably in selection of the players.

But despite valiant efforts from his employer, the Sports Authority of India and sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal, SAI could not retain Walsh even though the Australian was eager to work with the Indian team.

The entire process was derailed at the last moment by Hockey India president Narinder Batra who suddenly brought up Walsh's alleged financial irregularities during his tenure with USA Field Hockey.

Batra was adamant that Walsh had to come clear on the allegations before continuing as India coach.

Walsh's exit came as a big setback for the team which clearly was showing signs of improvement under the Australian.

The Indian suddenly found themselves on the backfoot while staging the prestigious Champions Trophy in a month's time.

After Walsh's exit, high performance director Roelant Oltmans was given the additional charge of the team for the Champions Trophy in Bhubaneswar.

Under Oltmans, the team tried hard to recover from the Walsh setback but the hosts were inconsistent in their performance in the elite eight-nation event.

India lost to Germany and Argentina in their opening two pool matches but came back strongly to beat the Netherlands after 18 years.

In the quarterfinals, the ninth-ranked Indians stunned World No. 4 Belgium to set up a mouth-watering clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in the semifinal.

But India's campaign in the tournament ended on a sour note as they conceded a late goal to go down against Pakistan in the semifinal. The hosts later lost to Australia in the play-offs to finish fourth in the tournament.

Meanwhile, the year started with the national federation successfully hosting the second edition of Hero Hockey India League, where most of the domestic players rubbed shoulders against top foreign players. The 2014 season of the franchise-based event was eventually won by Sardar-led Delhi Waveriders.

The Indian hockey eves also made significant progress in the year under Neil Hawgood's guidance but were dealt a shock at the year end when the Australian decided not to renew his contract citing personal problems.

Meanwhile, the Indian Under-21 team also gave the country's hockey fans reasons to cheer when they successfully defended the Sultan of Johor Cup title.

David Beckham's MLS group quietly optimistic: Report

MIAMI: David Beckham's group seeking a stadium deal to finalize a Miami football team is optimistic after quiet progress, the English star's top negotiator said on Sunday in a Miami Herald story.

The newspaper reported that the Miami Beckham United group trying to bring a Major League Soccer squad to South Florida remains confident despite a year of denials by area officials in bids to locate a tract of land for a new stadium.

"We have made very meaningful strides in the last couple of months," John Alschuler, Beckham's real estate adviser and lead negotiator, told the Miami Herald in an e-mail.

"While nothing in this complex equation can be taken for granted, I am optimistic that there will be several positive announcements in the first quarter of the next year."

The retired English football star took advantage of a clause in the MLS contract he signed when joining the Los Angeles Galaxy to purchase an MLS team at a bargain rate and identified Miami as the market where he wants the team to play, but has been thwarted in getting permission to build on his desired downtown stadium sites.

The group has been quiet since a June rejection of a waterfront bid even as local leaders try to lure interest from Beckham in their locations.

MLS officials and Beckham have been unified in saying the team is contingent upon a new stadium deal, Miami's hopes having yet to be finalized even as New York and Orlando prepare to welcome new MLS clubs next year, while Atlanta and a new Los Angeles club to replace defunct Chivas USA are set for 2017 starts.

Other cities have made expansion pitches to MLS and some in Miami fear they will miss out if they cannot reach a deal soon.

Juan Zapata, a Dade County commissioner, told the Herald he wants Beckham's group to consider playing at Florida International University's stadium while a deal is completed, saying that an active team will be harder to refuse even though MLS wants the stadium before awarding a team.

"I think it's obvious that MLS isn't going to get what they want," Zapata told the Herald.

"Until we figure out a stadium plan, I think we've got to get a team on the field."

MLS has not publically embraced a stadium site near the Miami Marlins' new Major League Baseball stadium, although the Herald reported that politicians privately call it the best hope Beckham's group has for discounted land upon which it could build a stadium.

"That's the only place we have that they might be able to use," Miami city manager Daniel Alfonso told the newspaper, adding that they have not heard from Beckham's group since a bayside site was rejected by the city six months ago.

He cemented that position with his fourth major title win at the US PGA Championship and ended the year almost three ranking points clear of second-placed Henrik Stenson of Sweden.

Tiger Woods, who was top-ranked at the start of the year, slumped to 32nd due to a run of injuries and related problems with his swing.

ROHIT SHARMA (CRICKET) -- Rohit Sharma, playing his first match for India in 10 weeks after suffering a finger injury and shoulder strain, shattered the one-day world record for a batsman with a monumental opening knock of 264 against Sri Lanka. Sharma's boundary runs alone amounted to 186 as he blitzed nine sixes and 33 fours from 173 deliveries in racing past the previous record 219 set by compatriot Virender Sehwag in 2011. Sri Lanka responded with 251 in the match. The remarkable run made Sharma the first to register a second ODI double hundred, having scored 209 against Australia last year. Sehwag and former team mate Sachin Tendulkar are the only others to reach 200 in one-day internationals. (TOI Photo)

LIONEL MESSI (FOOTBALL) -- More milestones fell in 2014 to Lionel Messi, who in typically breathtaking fashion became the all-time leading scorer in La Liga and the Champions League with two hat-tricks in the space of four days. Three goals against Sevilla took his La Liga total to 253, before a treble against APOEL Nicosia set a Champions League scoring record of 74 goals. The four-time World Player of the Year surpassed the previous La Liga mark of 251 set by former Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra in 1955 and the Champions League record of 71 he jointly held with former Real Madrid striker Raul. It was a superb way to crown a year in which he won the Golden Ball award for best player at the Brazil World Cup having led Argentina to the final. (AFP Photo)

SAN ANTONIO SPURS (BASKETBALL) -- With an inspiring display of teamwork and skill, relentless ball movement and dedicated defense, the San Antonio Spurs ended the two-year reign of the Miami Heat and LeBron James as NBA champions with a sublime run to the title. The selfless Spurs, with a roster full of international players led by an ageless core of Tim Duncan, French point guard Tony Parker and Argentine swingman Manu Ginobili, won in five games, taking each of their four wins by 15 points or more. Kawhi Leonard, 23, was named Finals MVP after successfully duelling James, who left Miami to return home to the Cavaliers after the Heat's streak of 11 straight playoff series wins was snapped by the Spurs, whose 70-point differential and 52.8 percent shooting from the field were both Finals records. MADISON BUMGARNER (BASEBALL) -- San Francisco pitcher Madison Bumgarner saved the day and the World Series for the Giants with a Game Seven effort that capped a record-breaking performance in the Fall Classic. The 25-year-old country boy from North Carolina put a spell over the Kansas City Royals, pitching five shutout innings of relief to preserve a deciding one-run win on two days rest after winning twice as a starting pitcher. The 6-foot-5 lefty was credited with the longest save in Series history and totalled 21 innings, nine hits, one run, 17 strikeouts and one walk in the best-of-seven. In winning a third championship ring he set all-time career World Series marks for lowest ERA (0.25) and fewest hits per nine innings (3.5). (AFP Photo)

VIKTOR AHN (SPEED SKATING) -- Eight years after his previous Olympic appearance, Viktor Ahn competed under a new name and for a new country but was the same dominant force in short track as he skated to three gold medals at the Sochi Olympics for Russia. Ahn took his Olympic haul to a short track career record six golds with wins in the 500m, 1,000m and 5,000m relay after being a triple champion for South Korea as Ahn Hyun-soo at the 2006 Turin Games. The 29-year-old missed the 2010 Olympics due to a knee injury and a falling out with the Korean Skating Union that led him to switch allegiance to Russia in his drive to become short track's most successful Olympic racer. Sreejesh hopes to live up to expectations in HIL 2015

LUCKNOW: After being picked up by Uttar Pradesh Wizards for a whopping $69,000 (Rs. 43 lakhs) which made him the richest goalkeeper in the Hero Hockey India League (HIL), PR Sreejesh is aiming to live up to the expectations.

Despite boasting of two quality international custodians - Australian George Bazeley and Malaysian Kumar Subramaniam, the Roelant Oltman-coached Wizards went for in-form Sreejesh, who showed stupendous form to steer India to an Asian Games gold medal at Incheon and a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The Indian vice-captain was also awarded the 'Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament' award in the just concluded Champions Trophy.

"HIL has been an excellent platform to sharpen our skills and tactics. Playing with the best players from all over the world, you realise where you stand and where you aim to be. One learns a lot while playing such tournaments," the 26-year-old said on Monday.

"This year I will aim at giving my best to help my team to reach for the title and living up to the expectations of all."

Sreejesh said that he along with the likes of star strikers Eddie Ockenden and Jeroen Hertzberger will ensure that Wizards finish on top.

"It will be a treat for me as I will watch from the other end players like Eddie Ockenden, Jeroen Hertzberger, David Alegre, Shea McAleese fighting it out against the opponents and trying to take UP Wizards up the points table."

Sreejesh earlier played for the now-defunct Mumbai Magicians in the first two editions of the tournament.

The opening day of the League will witness Kalinga Lancers taking on Ranchi Rays in Bhubaneswar on January 22.

ISL glitz props Indian football but national team slips in 2014

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 28 Desember 2014 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: The 'sleeping giant' woke up to a new dawn with the ISL putting Indian football on the global map, but the national team continued to paint a grim picture, plummeting to its worst-ever rankings in an eventful year for the sport.

The national team's prolonged decline got buried under the intense hype over what turned out to be a fairly successful inaugural Indian Super League, which was graced by former stars such as Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet, Robert Pires, Marco Materrazi, Luis Garcia and Nicolas Anelka, among others.

Seen for over two months on the dugout was Zico, a football legend in his own right not just in Brazil but the world over.

Goa FC did reach the semifinals of ISL but what was more important for the side's players was that they were under the tutelage of Zico for over two months, something that would surely benefit them in near future.

Besides the franchise-based tournament, a model based on cricket's popular Indian Premier League, bagging the 2017 Under-17 World Cup was another silver lining this year for the success-starved nation that is struggling at 171 in FIFA rankings.

In January, India were ranked 156th and by the end of year, they dropped 15 places, the never-ending spate of reverses leaving coach Wim Koevermans so frustrated that the Dutchman decided not to continue in the hot seat.

Another one from the Netherlands, Robb Bann, has also quit from the post of technical director.

A replacement is awaited with Stephen Constantine emerging as the front-runner for his second spell as India coach. ISL franchise NorthEast United's coach Rickie Herbert's name is also doing the rounds.

If the lack of enough international friendlies is one of the reasons for the national team's decline, the Indians failed to perform the few times they played, most prominent among them being the defeat to Pakistan.

The women's and the junior teams though fared better compared to the senior men's team.

The on-field disappointments of the men's national team aside, the year panned out to be quite a promising one for Indian football.

Not too long ago not many people would have imagined that footballers who were once big names, would be criss-crossing the country, dishing out the best they could offer in this stage of their lives in different cities.

The ISL made it possible, and how! The presence of big attractions lured the fans and they trooped in to the stadiums in droves, cheering for their cities and some of the favourite stars who they saw only on TV in the past.

The likes of Del Piero, Materrazi and Trezeguet gave the fans just the kind of connect with club football that the I-League had struggled to provide over so many years.

Added attraction was the Bollywood and cricket connection that most of the clubs had with legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly joining popular actors such as Ranbir Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan as owners various franchises.

With legends on display both on the pitch and in the stands, fans turned up in droves to catch the action and the players too rose to the expectations providing engaging contests, making the ISL a success in its inaugural season itself.

According to figures released by ISL organisers in November, the eight-team tournament was the fourth highest attended league in the world with an average attendance of 24,357, only behind German Bundesliga, English Premier League and Spanish La Liga.

This was is stark contrast to the country's premier domestic competition -- the I-League, which struggles to attract even a few thousands to the stands, with the exception of maybe a few derby matches in Kolkata or Goa.

The year will also be remembered for Brazil's fall and Germany's rise in world football.

The European heavyweight won their fourth World Cup title in the mecca of football, embarrassing Brazil 7-1 in front of their teary-eyed fans in one of the most one-sided World Cup semifinals ever, which changed the pecking order in the sport.

Brazil, though, became the only country to appear in all the 20 World Cups.

The Among other things, the legend of Lionel Messi only got bigger as the Cup of Cups progressed in South America.

The Barcelona star almost singlehandedly guided Argentina to the summit showdown where they dominated the mighty Germans for a better part of the game before Mario Gotze, a relatively unknown proposition in a star-studded line-up, scored a stunning extra-time goal to seal the issue in the European nation's favour.

Messi, now 27, will have to wait for the next edition in Russia to give a shot at matching his idol, the legendary Diego Maradona's feat of leading the La Albiceleste to a world title.

Meanwhile, Miroslav Klose became the highest goal-scorer in World Cup history, surpassing former Brazilian star Ronaldo. The 36-year-old German poacher now has 16 goals to his name.

EPL: Tottenham's Lloris curbs Man United's title surge

LONDON: Manchester United's efforts to force their way into the Premier League title race faltered as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

EPL: Points Table | Schedule & Result | Top Scorers

An outstanding display by Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris together with wasteful United finishing meant Louis van van Gaal's side were denied an eighth victory in nine games.

Had United claimed three points, they would have increased the pressure on top two Chelsea and Manchester City.

Instead they were left to reflect on a missed opportunity, but Spurs, who finished the game strongly, also had cause for regret after failing to enhance their own challenge for a top-four finish.

Van Gaal's decision to name an unchanged side for the first time since he took charge at Old Trafford was a clear indication of the manager's growing satisfaction with his team's efforts after some good recent results.

Results, however, have told only part of the story, with United having failed to convince on occasion.

Their defensive struggles, which have allowed goalkeeper David de Gea to shine, gave Tottenham grounds for pre-match optimism, particularly with Harry Kane in such good form.

The 21-year-old striker had scored in his four previous appearances and quickly demonstrated he was capable of unsettling United's back three of Phil Jones, Paddy McNair and Jonny Evans.

An excellent threaded pass from the recalled Andros Townsend almost allowed Kane to get in behind the visitors' back-line, but McNair was alert enough to smother the danger.

That, though, proved to be a rare example of the home side's attacking threat as United assumed control to the extent that Tottenham would have been out of the game before half-time had it not been for Lloris.

With Antonio Valancia and Ashley Young finding space on the flanks and Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney buzzing around in midfield, United repeatedly opened up a route to Lloris's goal, but neither Rademal Falcao nor Robin van Persie could find a finishing touch.

Mata came closest to breaking the deadlock with a 22nd-minute free-kick that struck the post and when the ball bounced towards the goal-line, Vlad Chiriches hacked it away from the feet of Falcao and Van Persie.

Falcao saw an angled shot parried by Lloris, moments before the Spurs goalkeeper snuffed out an opportunity for Van Persie after the striker had deftly brought down Michael Carrick's chipped pass.

Then, in the final minute of the half, the France international produced an acrobatic, full-stretch save to tip Young's curling cross-shot around the post.

The goalkeeper's heroics had kept Spurs in it and his team-mates responded after the restart by adopting a more ambitious approach.

Townsend had been Spurs' most dangerous attacking player and the England international became even more prominent as the game wore on, testing De Gea with a swerving 20-yard shot that the Spaniard did well to hold.

The winger's pace was troubling United and he appeared to have caught out Young in the 70th minute when he got behind the wing-back only to be hauled back.

Young had been booked 15 minutes earlier for a foul on Nacer Chadli, but although Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino and his players were convinced he should have received a second caution, referee Jon Moss waved play on.

Moments earlier, Mata had fired over from Rafael da Silva's cut-back, but that proved to be United's last clear chance as the momentum of the game tipped in Spurs' favour, with Christian Eriksen and Federico Fazio threatening.

Van Gaal withdrew the unconvincing Evans in favour of Chris Smalling, while Luke Shaw replaced McNair, but although the visitors hung on, it was amid a growing sense of panic.

Atwal's win among 2014 highlight for Tiger Woods

NEW DELHI: Left to nurse injuries for better part of the year going by, celebrated American golfer Tiger Woods said his close friend Arjun Atwal's Asian Tour triumph and a sponsorship deal with the Hero Group counted among the high points of 2014 for him.

In his year-end blog, Woods said, "As a golfer, 2014 was one of my most frustrating years because I've been hurt pretty much all year. I'm finally healthy enough to practice and dedicate myself to the game of golf again, and that's going to be fun for next year. But, in so many other ways, it was a great year and I have a lot to be thankful for.

"My kids are doing fantastic and are growing up and maturing, and it's happening faster than I ever thought. They're teaching me how to work an iPad, which is really funny.

"Lindsey Vonn is doing great. Her rehab was fantastic, and she worked so hard at it...It was nice to see my good friend Arjun Atwal win the Dubai Open last week. He's had some physical ailments and doesn't really have a playing card; it's just hit-and-miss tournaments and hard to get any momentum. But he birdied the last hole to win, and that's really exciting."

Woods said signing up with the Hero Group was also a high point of year.

"The Hero World Challenge was fantastic. We went to Isleworth and Orlando for one year, and it was great to see a lot of the people that I have gotten to know through the years. I would like to thank Mr. Munjal, Vice Chairman & CEO of Hero MotoCorp, for his support of the event and my foundation. We've developed a great relationship and have a shared vision."

Woods was also happy to see his niece Cheyenne earn her LPGA playing card for 2015, something he found out on the Sunday of the Hero World Challenge.

Sachin wants to light up villages in his next innings

NEW DELHI: Looking for "satisfaction" after retirement, Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar says he plans to light up lives in villages where electricity remains a distant dream even to this day.

The former batsman, who is a Rajya Sabha MP as well, said he is aiming to ensure that villages get access to electricity.

"My second innings is more about satisfaction. Many villages don't have electricity and life there comes to a standstill after sunset. This is one thing I want to change," Tendulkar told 'Star Sports'.

"It is going to require a lot of support and I hope I get it from everyone," said the celebrated player, who recently adopted the Puttamraju Kandrika village in Andhra Pradesh as part of a government initiative.

On to cricket and Tendulkar offered an insight into how tough it is playing in Australia, where the national team is currently playing a Test series.

"It (Australia) will make your life difficult. The players, media, groundsmen, everyone will make your life difficult but if you do well they are the first to stand up and applaud you. That's what I like about them," Tendulkar said.

Tendulkar played six World Cups and was part of the champion team which lifted the trophy in 2011. Speaking of the upcoming edition in Australia and New Zealand, Tendulkar said he would enjoy from the sidelines this time.

"I don't like to coach when I am not playing but I will be watching. I strongly believe that we have a very good chance. We just have to focus on process, the result will take care of itself," he said.

Tennis: Prizes shared but Djokovic and Serena still rule

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 26 Desember 2014 | 22.58

LONDON: Grand Slam titles were shared around like slices of pizza in 2014 but for all the welcome variety Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams ended the year still setting the standard.

For the first time since 1998 the eight Grand Slam singles trophies on offer were lifted by eight players.

While the four women's champions were existing members of the elite club, Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka and Croatia's Marin Cilic marked the biggest shake-up of men's tennis for a decade with breakthrough victories.

After years spent in the shadow of 17-time Grand Slam champion and compatriot Roger Federer, Wawrinka came good in Melbourne, beating Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and showing no mercy to injured Spaniard Rafa Nadal in the final.

Nadal rebounded to claim a ninth French Open title, but the year was too prove a worrying one for the injury-prone Mallorcan who suffered a shock defeat by Australian teenager Nick Krygios at Wimbledon before a wrist problem and a grumbling appendix restricted him to only seven more matches.

Federer, 33, claimed five titles but was unable to add to his record collection of Grand Slams.

He came close though. The Swiss maestro went toe to toe with Djokovic for five sets in an epic Wimbledon final, while a few weeks later in New York he looked favourite for the title before being ambushed by the powerful Cilic in the semi.

The door had been opened invitingly by events earlier on that sweltering New York day when Asian trailblazer Kei Nishikori became the first Asian man to reach a Grand Slam singles final with a stunning defeat of Djokovic.

It meant that, for the first time since 2005 a men's Grand Slam final took place without a member of the Fab Four, be it Federer, Nadal, Djokovic or Briton Andy Murray.

DOPING BAN

Cilic seized his chance in ruthless fashion by destroying Nishikori, completing a stunning comeback from the depths of the previous year when he served a doping ban.

Djokovic, who got married and became a father this year, claimed a chart-leading seven titles and won his last three events, culminating at the ATP World Tour Finals.

"I physically feel very fit," Djokovic said ominously. "I'm very motivated to keep on playing on a very high level. I'm going to try to use these years in front of me to fight for number one in the world and the biggest titles in the sport."

Like Djokovic, Williams, 33, will start 2015 as the measuring stick for the rest as usual.

The American, now the oldest world number one, overpowered Caroline Wozniacki to win her 18th Grand Slam title at the US Open, moving level on the all-time list with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert and only four behind record holder Steffi Graf.

While not as dominant as the year before, she still bagged seven titles and the way she scythed through the draw at Flushing Meadows was awe-inspiring, winning 14 consecutive sets and dropping only 32 games in bagging a sixth US Open crown.

Romania's Simona Halep, the most improved player on the circuit, and Canadian Eugenie Bouchard both contested their first Grand Slam finals but the establishment showed they are unwilling to cede the top trophies to the new generation.

Chinese veteran Li Na, who retired in September, won the Australian Open, Maria Sharapova fought off Halep to win the French Open title while Czech Petra Kvitova thrashed Bouchard to win her second Wimbledon title.

Tennis entered the brave new world of the International Premier League in December but a more fitting climax to a memorable year was Federer leading Switzerland to the Davis Cup title to fill one of the final gaps on his CV.

Rahul Dravid is the man behind rise of golfer Chikkarangappa

KOLKATA: He was once considered 'the wall' of Indian batting and now, post retirement, Rahul Dravid is helping emerging sportspersons and golfer S Chikkarangappa is one among them.

Inspired by Dravid's mentorship, the 21-year-old Bengaluru lad is eyeing the numero uno position in the 2014 Rolex Rankings for the PGTI order of merit and is on a high having won his maiden International at the Asian Development Tour.

"It's a dream come true to be mentored by the legendary Rahul Dravid. I've been associated with him for last six months," Chikka said giving credit to 'Dravid Sir' for his rise in Indian golfing scene.

"He told me 'always try to be in the situation. Focus on the particular day and leave the past behind', which is in fact working for me," he said about the mentorship programme by Go Sports Foundation that also has paralympic swimmer Sharath Gayakwad.

The former India captain is an ambassador of the GoSports Foundation, which is working to empower Indian sportspersons through their programme.

"I had always been a big fan of him as Test cricket was my favourite sport... But I fell in love with golf as I grew up near a golf course," Chikka, who lives at Bidadi in the outskirts of Bengaluru, said.

"He's currently busy with the India-Australia series but we expect him to be with us during January-February next year."

His association with Dravid did the trick as Chikka became the second Indian after Sujjan Singh to win on the Asian Development Tour when he bounced back with a final round of five-under 67 to win the TAKE Solutions India Masters at his home course Eagleton.

Chikka overcame the overnight six-shot deficit as he posted a tournament total of 18-under 270 to achieve a remarkable two-stroke victory at the $70,000 event.

Placed second behind Om Prakash Chouhan (Rs 4,191,750), Chikka (3,975,836) with nine-under-135 is one stroke behind second placed Rashid Khan after day two of the ongoing McLeod Russel Tour Championship that will determine the winner of the 2014 Rankings.

Rashid is incidentally placed fourth in the order of merit with a purse of Rs 2,719,800, as a top three finish will brighten prospects for Chikka to clinch the No 1 position.

Having turned Pro in 2013, Chikka has posted three wins on PGTI Tour this year winning Surya Nepal Masters (April), Kashmir Masters (July) and CG Open early this month.

EPL: Louis van Gaal hasn't given up on title

LONDON: Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal insists that winning the Premier League title remains a goal for him and the players despite being 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea heading into Friday's fixtures.

EPL: Points Table | Schedule & Result | Top Scorers

The 63-year-old Dutchman -- who originally said when he took over after the World Cup this year that he foresaw a three year rebuilding process -- has overseen a revival in the club's fortunes in recent months after a poor start to his reign which was Manchester United's worst since the 1986/87 season.

However, he takes United into the home game with Newcastle on Friday on the back of a run of six wins and a draw.

"Our goal is still to be the champion at the end of the season. It is always to be first," Van Gaal said.

Van Gaal, who earlier this year guided the Dutch to the World Cup semi-finals where they lost on penalties to Argentina, has spent 150 million pounds on new players and says that United can do better than the target set by the board at the outset of the season.

The board's goal was for United to finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League which is something they failed to achieve last term under the disastrous stewardship of David Moyes, who was sacked towards the end of the season and replaced temporarily by Ryan Giggs.

"With my players and all the staff, we are trying to achieve more than they expect," said van Gaal.

John Terry and Diego Costa were the men on target as Jose Mourinho's side moved six points ahead of second-place Manchester City, who are in action later in the day.

West Ham had begun the day in fourth place, but the gulf in class between the two teams was apparent throughout, with Chelsea's Eden Hazard the game's most eye-catching performer.

Andy Carroll volleyed wide in the first minute as West Ham -- criticised by Mourinho for their defensive tactics in the 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge last season -- indicated they might be more ambitious this time.

There was a much better chance for Chelsea soon after when the West Ham defence failed to deal with a cross from Willian that found Oscar, but the recalled Brazilian blasted over with only goalkeeper Adrian to beat.

Gary Cahill then headed over from a delivery into the box by fellow centre-back Terry as Chelsea continued to dominate the opening exchanges.

There was a nervous moment for the visitors when Hazard pushed the ball between Winston Reid's legs and went down on the edge of the box when the defender made contact, but referee Michael Oliver allowed play to continue.

Enner Valencia fired a West Ham free-kick over, but Adrian was soon required to make a save at the other end as Cahill let fly from close range at the near post.

James Collins was the first man into the book for a tackle on Costa in full flight, despite the defender rightly claiming he had played the ball.

Oscar had previously fired one wide, so it was Cesc Fabregas who took the free-kick, which he fired at Adrian.

Willian did the same from open play as Chelsea continued to exert immense pressure on the West Ham defence, and this time Adrian could only parry.

A goal was coming and it was Terry who provided it in the 31st minute, side-footing home from a couple of yards out after Costa had headed on a Fabregas corner.

Chelsea continued to move the ball about speedily and Adrian had to dive to keep out a low drive from defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic before Costa's deflected effort spun just wide.

Tempers flared just before half-time when West Ham's players reacted angrily to what appeared to be a dive inside the area by Branislav Ivanovic, who went to ground near Carroll.

West Ham began the second half with a flurry of activity, but could not fashion a clear chance, and it was not long before Adrian had to parry a fierce drive from Hazard that almost knocked him off his feet.

The visitors made a double change just before the hour mark, with Carroll and Mark Noble replaced by Diafra Sakho and Alex Song, but Chelsea's response was a second goal.

West Ham lost possession on the half-way line, Hazard found Costa, and the striker found the bottom-right corner despite the presence of three defenders to register his 13th effort of the campaign.

Costa then volleyed a difficult chance wide after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who had hardly been involved, had to gather at the feet of Sakho at the other end.

Adrian continued to prevent a rout, tipping over an Oscar free-kick and thwarting Matic from the ensuing corner.

A chance to get West Ham back in the game came Valencia's way 12 minutes before the end, but the Ecuador forward lashed his shot wide from an inviting position in the box and it was a similar story when substitute Morgan Amalfitano headed wide.

There was still time for Amalfitano to spurn an even better chance, the midfielder hitting the post after darting between Cahill and Terry.

Goalie Manuel Neuer cautious over Ballon d'Or prospects

BERLIN: Germany's World Cup winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer on Friday played down his prospects of securing the World Player of the Year award over holder Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

"I'm certainly not favourite," the Bayern Munich star told German daily Suddeutsche Zeitung.

"The other two are international 'marques', they've clearly got an advantage."

If Neuer does receive the Ballon d'Or he will be the first of his countrymen to do so since Lothar Matthaus in 1990 and only the second goalkeeper after Lev Yashin, of the then Soviet Union, in 1963.

For Germany coach Joachim Loew, the 28-year-old would be a worthy recipient.

"Manuel deserves this reward, he's taken the game to a new dimension," Loew told domestic news agency SID, subsidiary to AFP.

Neuer, Ronaldo, who has claimed the FIFA honour twice, and Messi, a four-time winner, are the three finalists for the 2014 Ballon d'Or with the winner announced on January 12.

Boxers pack a punch but administrative mess continues

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 25 Desember 2014 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Inside the ring, the men and women who mattered gave their blood, sweat and tears to conquer adversity with elan but outside, sparring for power continued to cast a shadow on Indian boxing in a year which was sparkling in parts but also blighted by some unsavoury controversies.

On the brighter side, India were back in the International Boxing Association (AIBA) fold after a new body took charge and there were some lion-hearted performances in the Commonwealth and Asian Games to cheer about.

But things remained a distant far from smooth after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) refused to grant affiliation to Boxing India while there was some drama inside the ring as well when L Sarita Devi was handed a one-year ban for rejecting her bronze medal at the Asian Games.

The year began with the who-would-form-the-new-federation drama continuing from 2013. The factional tug of war between various groups eager to form the new federation became so ugly that AIBA decided to terminate and derecognise all and formed its own committee to screen the contenders.

Ultimately, a new body did take shape but with the IOA playing hardball and refusing to grant recognition, it remains to be seen how things pan out for Boxing India in the coming year.

On the face of it, the IOA's adamant stand of continuing to recognise the erstwhile Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) defies logic given that it had chosen to keep mum when the body was terminated by AIBA earlier his year.

The drama outside smacked of political opportunism but inside the ring, the boxers lent out a lesson or two in conquering tough circumstances. Denied international exposure for a better part of the year, the pugilists showed what sheer determination is capable of achieving.

The first major test for them came in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games when the national federation was still in termination and they had to compete under the AIBA flag.

The men had little experience in fighting without head guards at a competitive level, while the women were making their debut at the Games.

They combined to bring home five medals -- four silver and one bronze -- from the event. Of these, three silver medals were grabbed by men, while a silver and a bronze came from women.

Star boxer Vijender Singh was among the medal winners and to his credit, India's first Olympic and World Championships medallist displayed exceptional form despite lacking in practice and battling a bout of flu through his contests.

Among the women medallists was a certain L Sarita Devi (silver), who later went on to create the year's biggest inside-the-ring controversy by refusing to accept her Asian Games bronze following a controversial semifinal loss.

In fact, the Asian Games in Incheon were a bitter-sweet affair. The men, who had returned with nine medals in the 2010 edition -- including a couple of golds, managed just two bronze this time.

But the ever growing legend of MC Mary Kom got bigger as she became the first Indian woman boxer to notch up a gold at the event.

The mother-of-three from Manipur, who has five world titles and an Olympic medal to boot, fought off younger challengers without breaking a sweat to be the top performer among the boxers.

Her inspiring tale found its way to the big screen as well with Priyanka Chopra delivering a knockout hit starring in as the diminutive boxer in 'Mary Kom'. In fact, Indian boxers made an impact on cinema in a big way this year with Vijender making his acting debut in Bollywood potboiler 'Fugly'.

However, there was a lot of heartbreak as well when Sarita lost controversially in the Asian Games semifinals despite dominating her bout against South Korean Ji-Na Park.

The defeat caused a massive furore with Sarita breaking down in tears and crying foul after settling for the bronze medal.

Things came to a head when the Manipuri, sobbing bitterly on the podium, refused to accept the medal and tried to put it around her semifinal rival's neck.

The behaviour was roundly condemned by the Organising Committee and the AIBA. The Indian had to ultimately tender unconditional apologies to both the bodies after being defiant for some time.

Later, India's combined sporting might was thrown in to defend the boxer with even cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal writing letters to AIBA chief Dr Ching Kuo Wu, pleading for leniency.

The apologies and explanations, however, could not save her from a ban and she was suspended from competition for one year, a punishment that would end in October 2015.

However, it was a massive relief for the Manipuri as there were fears that her career could be over after AIBA president Ching Kuo-Wu went on record saying that she would be heavily penalised for her actions.

India's Cuban coach Blas Iglesias Fernandes, on the other hand, ended up being the worst hit by AIBA's ire as the world body decided to suspend him for two years for calling the judges cheats in interviews that followed Sarita's loss.

The controversy aside, it was a creditable performance by the boxers given the tough circumstances they have been braving since December 2012 when the national federation was first suspended.

But they cannot be expected to keep pulling off good performances if the administrative scene does not improve. The current logjam, primarily caused by the IOA, will hurt the boxers sooner or later and there is a controversy already brewing over whether they would even participate in the January-February National Games in Kerala.

But bigger opportunities could be jeopardised if the matter is not resolved. With Olympic qualification at stake in 2015, it is imperative that the administrators get their act together for boxing to truly revive after the difficult phase of the last two years.

Swimming and athletics endure a dope tainted year

BEIJING: The fight against doping went into its climax in the second half of the year when top names from track and field, swimming and badminton fell from grace.

The anti-doping in the first half of 2014, however, had got its fair share in the limelight when six offenders were exposed in Sochi Winter Olympic Games in February.

China's top sport star Sun Yang hit the headline again. Only this time, he was involved in doping.

The Olympic and world swimming champion was banned for three months after being tested positive for the stimulant trimetazidine in May.

Sun said he used the prescription drug Vasorel to treat chronic heart palpitations but failed to file the therapeutic use exemption.

The 23-year-old had his explanation accepted but the timing of revealing his case went under fire. Sun's ban finished in August and he went on to win three gold medals in the Incheon Asian Games before the doping news was released in November.

Chinese sports authorities admitted that they should give more consideration to famous athletes' doping cases in the future.

"In anti-doping, we want to treat everyone equally. That's why we don't announce some single case just because he or she is famous," said Jiang Zhixue, head of governmental anti-doping department.

"Now I am wondering if it is necessary to make important cases known earlier than others," he said.

In athletics, China's top hammer thrower Zhang Wenxiu was stripped of Asian Games gold after anabolic agent Zeranol was found in her sample.

It was the sixth case of the Asian Games but the first ever for China in 20 years in any international multi-sport meets.

Track and field remains a centre of doping controversies for many years.

A documentary released by German television network ARD accused Russia of widespread doping and cover-ups in the sport, mentioning names including reigning Olympic women's 800-meter champion Maria Savinova and three-time Chicago Marathon winner Liliya Shobukhova.

The IAAF ethics commission has launched an investigation into the claims, leading to the stepping down of IAAF treasurer and Russian athletics federation head Valentin Balakhnichev as well as IAAF marketing consultant Papa Massata Diack, son of IAAF's president Lamine Diack.

Russian officials have strongly denied claims of state-backed doping and the Russian athletics federation has threatened legal action.

In another high-profile case, Kenya's marathon runner Rita Jeptoo was positive for blood-booster EPO from the out-of-competition test in September.

In badminton, Malaysia's former world No. 1, Lee Chong Wei, has been suspended by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) after failing a test at the World Championships in August.

He cited medical reasons and is waiting for the BWF hearing, hoping for a lenient punishment that might allow him to have his last shot at an Olympic title in the 2016 Rio Games.

Weightlifting did not escape from drugs either.

In November's world championships, eight lifters, including two gold medallists, have been provisionally suspended after failing doping tests.

Make a movie about Indian dressing room: MS Dhoni

MELBOURNE: He stirred up a hornet's nest by talking about a dressing room unrest but Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni sought to quell the speculation with a dash of humour on Thursday, saying that the imaginary stories that came out could be made into a movie by Warner brothers.

"Virat Kohli used a knife and he stabbed Shikhar Dhawan. When he recovered, we pushed him out to bat," joked Dhoni, when asked if Ravi Shastri indeed had to separate the two batsmen as per reports this past week.

The incident in question was the much talked about backing out from batting on the fourth day of the Brisbane Test by Shikhar Dhawan after being hit on the wrist during a net session.

Dhoni had stated that the last-minute shuffling of the order, which required Kohli go ahead of Dhawan, resulted in some unrest in the dressing room.

"These are all stories," he said on a serious note. "Stuff like this makes for good reading in tabloid papers and maybe it helps them sell better. Marvel and Warner Brothers should pick them up and make a movie out of it. I don't know where such stories come from."

"If someone from the team has actually said this, it will be interesting if you give us the name of that individual. Because his imagination is really brilliant and he should be working for movie companies and he doesn't deserve to be in our dressing room because he has created something that hasn't been there at all," he added with a dead-pan expression.

The Indian team has received a lot of flak from all quarters, including the Australian captain Steve Smith, in the build-up to the Boxing Day Test for their complaints about poor practice pitches and lack of proper food, besides the 'dressing room unrest'.

To add to it all, there has been a lot of aggressive banter on the field which paints a disturbing picture of the tour from an Indian perspective, especially in light of the 2-0 lead Australia take into this match.

"There haven't been any formal complaints from our side so far. I don't want to comment on Steve Smith's comments because that will not be appropriate," said Dhoni.

"But I feel a bit of chirping is good on the field till the time players are not crossing their boundaries irrespective of which side they represent whether Australia or India. That is what makes cricket really interesting and as long as guidelines are followed I am not really bothered."

"Also, all the chirping has nothing to do with the performance on-field. I said earlier too that we have had 30-35 minutes of bad cricket in both the Tests and they cost us the matches. We have a fantastic dressing room and there have been no issues. Whenever the Indian team travels and we face difficult situations, media starts making their own stories and start putting it forward," Dhoni added.

As much as the Indian captain tried to put issues to bed, the bottom-line is that his team stands at the cusp of yet another overseas Test series loss and the visitors will be desperate to avoid a 3-0 score-line here.

"We have addressed it by saying stick more to the process and think less about the results because ultimately it's the process that gives you the result. We need to address those 30-45 minutes of cricket and we have spoken about it as a group.

"Other than that I think the response of the guys has been really good whether it was the first match in Adelaide or the second match in Brisbane," said the Indian skipper.

"We have been competitive in the series so far. There have been phases where we have not played good cricket. If we are able to capture those situations, definitely we can turn the tide. But still what's more important is to play good cricket and I feel we are doing that. We are just not crossing the line which is vital in five days of Test cricket. We feel we are close but at the same time it will have reflect in our performance," he added.

All members of the squad, including Bhuvneshwar Kumar, have been declared fit for the match, but the medium-pacer won't be risked in a match situation just yet.

"He has started bowling and he bowled during nets in the last Test as well. But we want to load him a bit more with bowling. As far as his fitness is concerned he is fit and also available for selection but Test-match fitness is slightly different."

"You may be fit but you have to see five days of load, how many overs you can bowl, what the situation is. You actually prepare for the worst when it comes to fitness in Test cricket," said Dhoni.

"But we will have to keep rotation of the bowlers in mind...when you play with four bowlers there is slightly more load on the fast bowlers in conditions like these. There's been a conscious attempt to rotate bowlers so that they are fresh and we are only forced to make changes because of injuries. So far it's been good," he added.

Last but not the least, the Indian skipper completed 10 years in international cricket this past week, and he reflected on his experiences so far.

"It's been a long journey but time has flown. You don't get much time with your family. We keep travelling and play a lot of matches, nearly nine and a half months every year. So I have realized we may have a shortened career but let's make the most of it, look to play each and every game till there is some big injury that restricts you from playing cricket," he said.

"I have learnt a lot in the last ten years. To remain humble is most important because there are ups and downs in cricket unless you are Clive Lloyd leading West Indies who never saw defeat in 10-12 years. You go through a phase where you win a lot of games and then you go through a phase where you lose a lot of games.

"Your form goes up and down. Overall I can say that I have seen everything in the last ten years, it has been very good and I am very happy with the way these ten years have gone," Dhoni signed off.

Man United must maintain momentum: David de Gea

LONDON: Goalkeeper David de Gea believes the busy holiday fixture list offers the perfect opportunity for Manchester United to put some pressure on the Premier League's top two clubs.

United are third as they prepare to host Newcastle United on Friday, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea and seven behind champions Manchester City.

While a substantial gap, United are on a seven-match unbeaten run and beginning to look like a force again after a sticky start under new manager Louis van Gaal.

Spaniard De Gea, who has been instrumental in United's upturn, says they must keep the momentum going.

"It's all about keeping this good run going," De Gea told United website. "Both as an individual and as a team and keeping going with good results.

"This one is going to be a very, very big game. It's really vital that we get the three points and keep this run going because I think we're in some decent form at the moment."

After Newcastle, United travel to Tottenham Hotspur on December 28 and Stoke City on New Year's Day, meaning no rest for the former Atletico Madrid stopper, although Van Gaal did let the squad enjoy Christmas Day off.

"It's a bit strange for all of us who are coming here from other leagues where we've been used to having a winter or at least a Christmas and New Year break," he said.

"At the same time, these are the fixtures you really enjoy. It's a good period in the season and these games are always exciting."

Would take up Champions Trophy issue with FIH: PHF

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 24 Desember 2014 | 22.58

KARACHI: The Pakistan Hockey Federation has said it would take up the issue of behaviour of tournament director at the recent Champions Trophy in India with the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

PHF secretary Rana Mujahid told reporters in Lahore after the Congress of the federation that it was decided to take up the controversial issue that occurred after the semifinal against India at the FIH level.

"We are going to approach the FIH and discuss these issues with them at the forthcoming Executive Board meeting," Mujahid, a former Olympian, said.

He said that it was disappointing for the PHF that after pressure exerted by Hockey India officials the tournament director had reversed his decision of not taking any disciplinary action against the Pakistani players for their celebrations after the win over India.

"First he was satisfied with the explanation given by the Pakistan team coach. Later he imposed a ban on two players and issued warning to one player," he added.

Rana said that it was very painful the way coach Shahnaz Sheikh was summoned by the tournament director thrice just hours before the final of the tournament.

"You can imagine what he must have gone through. On one hand he had to prepare the team for the final and on other hand he was put under pressure by the tournament director who mentally disturbed him. It is most unfortunate what happened in the tournament."

The PHF Congress also issued a warning that if the Prime Minister didn't sanction funds to the tune of 500 million rupees soon the country's national game would die.

"There is general discontent among the players who even in most adverse conditions have won two silver medals in two major events. They want to be patronised and encouraged," he said.

Ibra unhappy at coming second on list of Swedish greats

STOCKHOLM: Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has dismissed his second-place finish on a list of Sweden's all-time sporting greats behind tennis master Bjorn Borg.

"Thank you but to finish second is like finishing last," he informed the Dagens Nyheter newspaper through his brand manager Mika Lepisto.

The 33-year-old Paris St Germain striker was second in the list of 150 Swedish sportspeople, created by the newspaper as part of their 150th-anniversary celebrations.

Asked where he would have put himself in the rankings, Ibra said: "On that list I would have been number one, two, three, four and five, with due respect to the others."

Instead, the newspaper jury selected tennis great Borg, who won 11 grand slam tournaments in a stellar career that Ibrahimovic acknowledged.

"Bjorn Borg is a cool person and a living legend," said Ibra, who has scored 51 goals in 101 games for Sweden and has won titles at many of Europe's leading clubs including Ajax Amsterdam, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC MIlan and PSG.
