Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 November 2014 | 22.58

MANILA: Micromax Indian Aces registered their third successive victory in the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL), defeating UAE Royals 28-20 at the Mall of Asia Arena here on Sunday.

UAE coach John Laffnie de Jager won the toss and elected to receive and in the first encounter, Kristina Mladenovic beat Aces' Ana Ivanovic 6-4. Ivanovic gave a spirited display despite being down 1-5.

Experienced mixed doubles pair Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna notched a 6-3 win in the second set over Mladenovic and Nenad Zimonjic to equalise for the Aces.

Later, Bopanna partnered with Gael Monfils to victory over Zimonjic and Marin Cilic 6-4 in the men's doubles third set. This win gave the Aces a 2-1 lead, which increased to 3-1 following Monfils' 6-3 win over Malek Jaziri, who replaced injured Marin Cilic.

"I love this format. This suits me well. I love the team atmosphere. We had fun out there. Actually we're good friends - Ana, Sania - we grew up together. It's a good competition because we are having fun," Monfils said.

In the fifth and final set, Aces' coach-cum-player Fabrice Santoro defeated Goran Ivanisevic 6-4 to win the past champions' tie.

"I will remember the hospitality and how many people love tennis here and are happy to see the best champions in the world and if you ask the crowd they will want to have this back again next year," Santoro, nicknamed 'The Magician', said after the victory.

Kohli, Shastri, Fletcher to attend Phil Hughes funeral

ADELAIDE: Stand-in skipper of the Indian team Virat Kohli will attend the funeral of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes on Wednesday.

He will be joined by team director Ravi Shastri, coach Duncan Fletcher and team manager Arshad Ayub.

Three or four other Indian players are expected to join them and a final decision will be made once the team reaches Brisbane on Monday.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 3, in Hughes' hometown of Macksville.

The left-handed batsman died on Thursday after being hit by a bouncer in a Sheffield Shield game two days prior, sparking an outburst of emotion throughout the country.

India's two-day tour match against Cricket Australia Invitational XI at Adelaide Oval this past weekend was cancelled as a result.

The team continued to stay over in the city till today holding regular practice sessions in preparation for the Test series.

Sunday would have been the late cricketer's 26th birthday and as such the solemn mood continued to be observed by one and all.

Australian skipper Michael Clarke wrote a special tribute to his former team-mate.

Cricket Australia too edited the score-card from that Sheffield Shield game between New South Wales and South Australia, changing Hughes' status from 'retired hurt' to '63 not out'.

The Australian governing body has been full of praise for the understanding and patience the BCCI and the visiting team have shown in this sad circumstance.

Attending the funeral is another step for the Indian contingent to show solidarity to their hosts at such tragic time.

They had earlier practised away from the Adelaide Oval on Friday as a mark of respect, holding a closed net session, wearing black arm-bands.

On Saturday, before practice, Kohli had 'put out' one of his bats as well as his India cap outside the Adelaide Oval, paying tribute to the late cricketer.

However, the uncertainty over the first Test continues.

It was learnt yesterday that Cricket Australia had first sought a one-day postponement to the Test because their players wouldn't have been ready to play on Thursday.

The Indian team was informed of this and they did not make any changes to its planned departure for Brisbane.

Later yesterday evening, the visiting contingent was also made aware of the possibility of the complete cancellation of the Test match, but subject to playing the game at a later date.

It seemed a proper notion given that there is quite a gap between the second Test at Adelaide that supposedly ends on December 16 and the third Test at Melbourne that is scheduled to begin on December 26, Boxing Day.

But given the festivities around Christmas and the little turnaround time between three consecutive Tests in a packed summer of cricket mean that this might not be a viable option.

And so it has been learnt that Cricket Australia have now sought an additional day's postponement and hope that their players might be fit to play the game from December 6.

This would of course mean a delay in the schedule of the first and second Test by two days each, but the gap between the Adelaide and Melbourne Tests means that this is a comfortable possible scenario.

However no official word has been issued in this regard by Cricket Australia and they continue to maintain that any details about the rescheduling of the first Test will only emerge at a later date.

Even so, as mentioned above, the Indian team will fly out of Adelaide on Monday in the hope of seeing some action later in the week.

A decision about the first Test will be expected to have been made by the time the Indian team reaches Brisbane.

Liverpool's Gerrard rubbishes talk of Rodgers rift

LONDON: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has dismissed as "nonsense" talk of a falling out with manager Brendan Rodgers after he was dropped from the starting lineup for Saturday's victory over Stoke City.

Gerrard was left out of the first 11 for the match at Anfield as Liverpool arrested a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats with a nervy and hard-fought 1-0 victory that arrived courtesy of a late goal from Glen Johnson.

It was the 16th anniversary of the 34-year-old midfielder's debut for the Merseyside club and he was keen to play down a reported rift.

"Just to set the record straight media talk of a fall out between us 2 is NONSENSE ..have a nice Sunday," he wrote on Instagram, accompanying a picture of him and Rodgers in training.

Gerrard came on as a late substitute in a more attacking role as Liverpool went in search of the opening goal, having largely dominated the match without finding a breakthrough.

Liverpool manager Rodgers had preferred Lucas Leiva in the anchor midfield position that Gerrard has recently occupied as he sought to help plug holes in a leaky defence, as well as handing a well-earned rest to his captain who had been a virtual ever-present.

Gerrard's role had come under scrutiny from fans and pundits this season as teams sought to nullify his influence and curb his ability to pull strings from a deep midfield position.

Without the incisive running of strikers Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona in the close season, and the injured Daniel Sturridge, Gerrard's trademark long passes have often lacked a target, reducing his influence in the quarter-back role.

The introduction of Lucas, as well as Kolo Toure at centre back, seemed to shore up Liverpool's rearguard, and both drew praise from Rodgers in the wake of Saturday's clash.

"Lucas Leiva has come into the team and been outstanding in his two games -- very tenacious, aggressive and can pass the ball. Kolo Toure's experience coming into the team has been good for us," the manager told reporters.

Time for revenge as Anand eyes sixth world title

SOCHI: Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will look to avenge last year's championship defeat and clinch his sixth world title when he takes on Magnus Carlsen in the first game of the World Chess championship here tomorrow.

The Indian ace, who has silenced his critics with some remarkable performances this year, is still the underdog but his chances seems to have improved greatly as compared to last time.

The match, to be played over 12-games, will have the Classical time control with 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, 60 minutes for the next 20 and then fifteen minutes each with a 30 second increment from move 61 onwards.

In case of a tied result after 12-games, four rapid games will be played to determine the winner and if the scores are still tied, the match will be fought over in a series of blitz games till a clear winner emerges.

The winner will get 60 per cent from the total prize fund of 1 million Euros (Approx. Rs. 7.6 Crores).

For Anand it will be a new challenge under better conditions than the last time when the Indian was struggling before the match took place.

By winning the candidates tournament and earning the right to challenge Carlsen in a match again in March, Anand proved his detractors wrong and followed it up with another tournament victory at Bilbao Final Masters more recently.

Carlsen, on the other hand, will have his task cut out and he still starts as the favourite despite some mediocre performances recently. The Norwegian star won the world rapid and blitz earlier this year and is the first player ever to be world champion across all formats.

However, apart from winning these titles, Carlsen has finished second in two tournaments this year including the Sinquefield Cup where the world champion ended three points behind the eventual winner Fabiano Caruana.

Starting as the defending champion would certainly mean that Carlsen would be carrying a huge burden of expectations this time around.

While Carlsen refused to disclose his team in the last match a year before at Chennai, Anand has already indicated that there are some big changes in his team from last time.

Things seem to be favouring Anand, who has been preparing for the match since April. However, one cannot forget the way Carlsen decimated the Indian the last time in a one-sided match. It is advantage Carlsen still, but Anand should get his share of pride this time.

Boris Becker extends deal as Novak Djokovic coach

BERLIN: Boris Becker has struck a new deal to remain coach of world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic, the German icon revealed in an interview with sports daily Bild on Friday.

"We have a written agreement, even if for sportsmen like us, a handshake is enough," said the 43-year-old who has been Djokovic's main coach since December 2013.

"Our partnership has been crowned with success these past 12 months and I'm delighted to continue our work with the whole team," added the triple Wimbledon champion, who when asked how long the deal was for replied; "As long as the results are there."

Under Becker's guidance, the 27-year-old Djokovic has won six titles in 2014, including a second Wimbledon success, after 2011, and now stands on the brink of finishing the year as world number one heading into next week's ATP World Tour Finals in London.

According to Becker, retaining the number one spot has been their main priority while the French Open title is the only Grand Slam still eluding the Serbian.

The seven-time Grand Slam winner has a healthy lead over world number two Roger Federer heading to the English capital where he triumphed last year for the second time.

Sachin Tendulkar hints at major sporting plan with PM Modi

LONDON: Iconic Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar today hinted that a major proposal on sports, which he has submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to be unveiled soon.

At the UK launch of his much-hyped autobiography -- 'Playing It My Way' -- Tendulkar said the details of the plan would be released soon.

The Rajya Sabha MP ruled out any plans of entering politics but confirmed that he has been in talks with the Modi government on a proposal which he will reveal soon.

"I was a sportsman and will be a sportsman forever. I have handed over a proposal recently which presents my vision and the PM has been receptive," he told reporters at a launch event at the Lord's Cricket Ground.

"I have already given one proposal some time ago to the government. Recently also, I met the PM and shared my vision with him and he was extremely receptive and immediately afterwards met with his team. We are working on something which you will know soon," he said.

While Tendulkar did not completely rule out coaching the Indian cricket team in the future, he stressed that he has already been unofficially sharing his knowledge with current players and will continue to do so.

"Twenty-four years with cricket is a long time to spend away from family. I feel players are approachable to me and I am approachable to them. We have been discussing over the phone on various issues and there were also a few players who ended up coming to Mumbai to work with me and we had a couple of sessions each, trying to figure out what could be corrected," said Tendulkar.

"It's about sharing your knowledge, sharing your thoughts and that's what I have been doing and I don't think I need a post to be able to pass on that message. The response that I have always received from players has been special because they respect me and the respect is mutual.

The 41-year-old batting legend said that the players were receptive to his advice.

"Whatever I say, they listen to me and there's a healthy discussion on that. It's not that whatever I say is the final word. It's nice to talk cricket. As long as I am able to do that, it really doesn't matter whether I am the official coach of the team or not."

The former Indian cricketer was joined at the London launch of his book by ex-England cricket captain Nasser Hussain, who Tendulkar described in his book as "the best captain" he has played against.

Hussain asked him about the toughest aspect of writing the autobiography, given how private he is as a person.

"I've covered most of my life I would say. The toughest bit for me to cover was my personal life with Anjali, which nobody knew about. That was really difficult," Tendulkar responded.

"The icing on the cake was when we won the 2011 World Cup, which I have covered extensively, including how I had a flower in my ear as I danced with my wife with a bottle of champagne in hand. It [book] is a good insight into what I have been through in my life," he said.

Regarding the impact the book has already had in India, he said, "I have not tried to create controversies intentionally. Certain statements I make in the book have made headlines but the idea was not to make headlines.

"During my playing days, I felt all my energy should focused in one direction, which is scoring runs and winning matches for India. And I honestly didn't have the time or energy for anything else. But now my career is over I thought it was only fair I brought this out and let people know what I have been through," Tendulkar said.

The publishers, Hodder & Stoughton, have claimed that the book has already broken all records for a hardback in India.

Mary Kom backs pregnancy tests, says it's for safety

NEW DELHI: Olympic bronze medallist boxer M C Mary Kom came out in support of the controversial pregnancy tests conducted by Sports Authority of India on World Championships-bound women pugilists, saying that it was good for the safety of the players.

She said that conducting the tests was not a new development as she herself had undergone the same.

"I myself has undergone these tests. I am not involved in these recent tests but in my opinion it is good for the safety of the boxers themselves. Nothing much should be read on these tests," Mary Kom said on the sidelines of a felicitation programme by Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.

"Moreover, these have been done under the guidelines of the AIBA and applied worldwide," she added.

Eight women boxers, who are set to compete at the World Championships in Korea next week, were subjected to pregnancy tests by SAI under the new requirements of AIBA though the move was criticised by experts.

The invite sent to Boxing India by the AIBA to take part in the World Championships at Jeju Islands, South Korea, specifically sought a non-pregnancy form to be issued for the women boxers by a doctor.

The five-time world champion said that in the last few years, these pregnancy tests were not made mandatory for all international events and sometimes only a declaration by the boxers were enough in some cases.

"In the last two-three years, some international tournaments would require pregnancy tests and some would not not. So, a declaration was enough for some events. Now, if the AIBA says it is mandatory, then we should follow it," said Mary Kom.

Asked if pregnancy tests could be a matter of concern for unmarried women, May Kom simply said, "In my opinion it should be OK for them also. These days, women are smart and they know what is going on around."

Thirteen sportspersons from the Northeastern region of the country, who have won medals in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, were today felicitated with cash awards by the DONER Ministry at the North East Festival.

The other athletes felicitated were gymnast Dipa Karmakar, judokas Kalpana Thoudam and Sushila Likmabam, boxers Sarita Devi and Devendro Singh, hockey players Chinglensana Kangujam, Kothajit Singh, Chan Chan Devi and Sushila Devi, weightlifters Sanjita Khumukcham and Mirabai Chanu and wushu player Yumnam Sanathoi Devi.

The gold winners were handed a cheque of Rs 10 lakh while the silver and bronze medallists were presented Rs 5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh respectively.

Mary Kom said that the country can expect more medals from the northeast athletes in the future.

"We have got great support from the government and we have to give more medals to the country," she said.

Ankur Mittal wins gold at Asian Shotgun Championship

AL AIN: India's impressive run at the 4th Asian Shotgun Championship continued as Ankur Mittal clinched the gold medal in men's double trap event, giving the country its fourth yellow metal in the continental event here today.

The 22-year-old shot 141 in the qualification round and 28 each in the semifinal and gold medal contest to bag the top honours.

Teammate Mohd Asab won the bronze after reaching the finals with a score of 139 in the qualification. He shot 27 in the semifinal stage and 28 in the bronze medal match.

Elated at the news, NRAI president Raninder Singh said, "Ankur has come up the junior ranks really well and finished a creditable 16th in a top field at the Shooting World Championships in Granada earlier in the year.

"This is his best in international competition so far and we expect more improvement and greater things from him going forward. It is heartening to see youngsters perform with such aplomb in top international competitions and bodes really well for the future of the shooting sport in India."

It may be recalled that in the Continental championship that began on November 1, Seema Tomar had won the woman's trap event and team gold alongside Shagun Chaudhary and Shreyasi Singh.

Then Manavaditya Rathore, son of Olympic silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, won the junior trap event.

India could have further bolstered its gold tally, but the team event in the double trap men event was cancelled due to inadequate entries from the Asian countries.

No violation of rules in pregnancy tests: Boxing India

NEW DELHI: Boxing India today refuted allegations that junior women pugilists were subjected to pregnancy tests ahead of the upcoming World Championships, stating that only the eligible senior girls went through the tests as required by the International Boxing Association (AIBA).

Amid reports that girls were subjected to these tests in violation of rules, BI, which is yet to get recognition from the Sports Ministry and IOA, today stated that the AIBA invitation for the Championships, later this month, clearly asks for a "non pregnancy form issued by a medical doctor" from all participating boxers.

"...the invitation clearly states that all boxers must carry 'non pregnancy form issued by a medical doctor' to Jeju for the general weigh-in. Indian team boxers, through the team coaches and the chief coach requested in writing to Boxing India to facilitate in guiding them and organising to get this test done through Sports Authority of India or any SAI doctor," it said.

"A few media reports have published that pregnancy tests were conducted on junior girls. We would like to reinstate that such reports are baseless, misleading and are misrepresentation of the facts. The minimum age requirement for the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships Jeju 2014 is 19 years and the youngest girl participating in this camp is 1994 born.

"Since no junior girl has been inducted in this camp, the question of conducting pregnancy test on junior girls doesn't arise at all," it added.

BI President Sandeep Jajodia insisted that the body has stuck to rules in carrying out the procedure.

"Boxing India in the best interest of the boxers will always ensure that the guidelines prescribed by AIBA are followed by the Indian contingent," he said.

"Any violation in them could lead to disqualification and it is Boxing India's responsibility to ensure the safety of all our boxers. Also, these rules of AIBA are not only applicable to India but to all participating AIBA National Member Federations across the globe," he added.

Man City have 'crisis of confidence': Pellegrini

MANCHESTER: Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said that his team were suffering "a crisis of confidence" after they were left on the brink of Champions League elimination by CSKA Moscow.

City had ended a three-game winless run by beating Manchester United 1-0 on Sunday, but they produced a strangely insipid display on Wednesday in a 2-1 home defeat by the Russian champions.

Seydou Doumbia scored both goals for CSKA at a cold and misty Etihad Stadium, either side of a free-kick by Yaya Toure, who was sent off in the second half along with team-mate Fernandinho.

City now trail CSKA and Roma by two points ahead of their next game at home to already-qualified Bayern Munich and with their fate no longer in their own hands, Pellegrini admits the English champions have lost their way.

"It is a crisis of confidence," said the Chilean, who is bidding to prevent City succumbing to a third group-stage exit in four years.

"It is difficult to know why. It was such a low performance from important players. It is a strange moment. It is not just this competition. In the last two weeks, we are not playing.

"I don't understand, why but we must find a reason because we must arrange the situation."

As well as sending off Fernandinho, for two bookable offences, and Toure, for shoving Roman Eremenko, referee Tasos Sidiropoulos failed to show a second yellow card to CSKA midfielder Pontus Wernbloom in an apparent case of mistaken identity -- instead booking Sergei Ignashevich.

Sidiropoulos also waved away a strong late penalty claim by Sergio Aguero, who he had earlier booked for diving.

But while Pellegrini felt that Sidiropoulos had made "mistakes", he said the Greek official's display was a red herring.

"I don't want to analyse the referee's decision," said the former Real Madrid coach, who felt the red cards suggested his players had been "nervous".

"He referees the game and must decide if they are red cards or they are not red cards, or if it is a penalty or if it is not a penalty.

"It is more important for me to analyse why we are not playing in the way we always work."

Despite City's perilous position, Pellegrini vowed that his players would not give up hope.

"You have the mathematical option to qualify, you must fight for it," he added.

"We must first try to play against QPR, then we have the international break, and then we are going to try to qualify for the next stage. It is more difficult, but it is not impossible."

Pellegrini also revealed that captain Vincent Kompany will undergo tests on Thursday after limping off at full-time.

"I don't know at the moment if it is just a kick or we will see if it is some problem with his calf," he said.

CSKA coach Leonid Slutsky praised Doumbia for his match-winning turn, which came two weeks after the former Ivory Coast international scored a goal and won a penalty in his side's 2-2 draw at home to City.

"Obviously when he had the first game in Moscow, he could hardly walk, he was limping," said Slutsky, whose side had never previously won in England.

"Even limping he could score a goal and was fouled for the penalty. Before today's (Wednesday's) match he didn't have much preparation because of the injury and he hasn't been training for months.

"Considering all of that, he showed a very high level of skill and he deserves to be treated as a hero."

CSKA's press officer also confirmed that the club's Serbian winger Zoran Tosic, formerly of Manchester United, had been prevented from playing after he entered the country with the wrong kind of visa.

No regrets in sight for Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg

SAO PAULO: A relaxed Nico Rosberg will have no regrets if he has to rely on Formula One's new and controversial double points ruling at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to win this year's drivers' world championship.

The 29-year-old German made this clear on Thursday when he answered questions during a pre-race news conference at Interlagos ahead of this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix.

Rosberg, who trails Mercedes teammate Briton Lewis Hamilton by 24 points in the title race, said he would respond if and when it happens, but expected a typical post-season debate if that scenario unfolded.

"I will respond then - and everyone has their opinion and afterwards they will debate it and that's always been the case, hasn't it?" he said with a smile.

He admitted he now faced a situation in which, with two races remaining, he was relying on someone or something else to rekindle his championship dream.

"I need to rely on something happening and it is clear and that's it, but in sports, anything can happen so I am still optimistic," he said.

Asked to describe his recent run of results which have seen Hamilton win five races in a row, Rosberg said: "A less rich run of form! It's been (the case that) Lewis has done a better job since then (the European summer) and it is pretty simple that that's it. Now, there are two races..."

Rosberg was asked also to respond to reports claiming that Hamilton had reacted to their collision in Belgium by intensifying his motivation.

"Did he say we are at war?" said Rosberg with a laugh. "I don't know what his exact opinion is on things, but for me nothing has changed. It was a very intense competition and it is the same now."

BI conducts pregnancy tests even on unmarried boxers

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 05 November 2014 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Eight women boxers, including unmarried and juniors, who are set to compete at the World Championships in Korea next week, have been subjected to pregnancy tests by Boxing India (BI), according to SAI consultant Dr. PSM Chandran.

Dr. Chandran, who is president of Indian Federation of Sports Medicine, said the tests were conducted by Sports Authority of India (SAI) at the behest of BI.

"These boxers have been compelled to undergo pregnancy tests. They ordered and the SAI followed suit. Pregnancy tests were carried out on eight young unmarried girls, some even juniors, a classic case of human rights violation," Chandran claimed in a press release.

"The shocking thing is that it was done against rules. In the AIBA Technical Rules 2.1.4.2 which came into effect on 31 Aug 2014, there is no provision to subject boxers to pregnancy tests. The rule states "Women Boxers must additionally submit a non-pregnancy declaration along with the Medical Certificate. For Women Boxers under the age of 18, this non-pregnancy declaration must be signed by at least one of their parents or legal guidance'," Chandran explained.

"The hapless girls in their eagerness to don India colours had no choice but to concede to such barbaric demands by the officialdom against their own dignity and honour."

However, BI secretary Jay Kowli said he was not aware of the matter.

Chandran demanded that it was time for the National Human Rights Commission as well as the National Women Commission "to intervene in sports in order to ensure that the rights and dignity of girls who come forward to participate in sports are safe-guarded".
SAI executive director (Teams) Sudhir Setia said that there was no violation of rules and the tests were mandatory under world body AIBA guidelines.

"This is a matter handled by the federation doctor. But this is not the first time our women boxers had gone outside the country after undergoing these tests. Each of the women boxers are required to give a certificate (that they were not pregnant) for their safety as well as that of the would-be baby," Setia said.

"This is no doubt a sensitive issue in India but it is mandatory under AIBA rules. We have not violated any rules," he added.

However, one senior official who has been associated with boxing for long, said that there must be some goof up or misinterpretation of rules on the part of SAI officials as a pregnancy test was not mandatory under AIBA rules. He said the women boxers need to furnish a declaration that they are not pregnant.

"It must be a goof up or a misinterpretation on the part of SAI officials. They must be under the impression that women boxers need to give a certificate after undergoing a pregnancy test. This is not there under AIBA rules. All the women boxers need to do is to furnish a declaration by themselves that they are not pregnant," the official said.

India stun World Champions Australia to level series

PERTH: The Indian men's hockey team bounced back in style against Australia, beating the World Champions 2-1 to level the four-match Test series at 1-1 on Wednesday.

India started aggressively and kept the opponents' defence busy in the first two quarters. They managed to sneak into Australian defence-line and created good opportunities.

However, Australia drew first blood in the 30th minute when forward player Matt Gohdes deflected a shot and sent the ball into the goal, taking the lead before the end of second quarter.

In the third quarter, Australia earned a penalty corner which was well-defended by India before the visitors counter attacked the Australian D through a long pass. It was Sardar who cleverly forwarded the ball to Ramandeep Singh, who made no mistake in netting the ball, helping his team equalise in the 33rd minute.

The equaliser saw India increase their tempo as they attacked yet again the very next minute through a long pass into the opponents' D. This time, it was SV Sunil who single-handedly took the ball to the circle and cleverly put it past the goalkeeper, giving India the second goal and the lead.

In the fourth and final quarter, both India and Australia fought neck-and-neck. India continued their attacking game till the last minute and tried to create more chances but they were now up against a defensive Australia, who managed to hold the scorecard till the final whistle.

The third match of the series will be played on November 8.

Sachin Tendulkar unveils his book 'Playing it My Way'

MUMBAI: Sachin Tendulkar's much-awaited autobiography 'Playing It My Way' was on Wednesday launched in the presence of some of his former teammates, celebrities and family members at an engrossing ceremony.

The book, the first copy of which he gave to his mother Rajni earlier in the day, was unveiled by Tendulkar himself amid thundering applause by the gathering.

At the launch, Tendulkar presented a copy to his mentor and childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar in the presence of his daughter Sara.

"I would like to present the first copy after launch to somebody very special in my life, Tendulkar said before handing over a copy of the book to a wheelchair-bound Achrekar.

Before the launch of the book, cricket analyst and host for the evening Harsha Bhogle had three panel discussion sessions with Tendulkar's former teammates and family, who significantly feature in the book.

The first panel discussion was attended by former India captains Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri and former Mumbai cricketer Vasu Paranjape, who played a crucial role in shaping Tendulkar's career.

Gavaskar remembered how he met Tendulkar for the first time and was impressed by his talent at the first look.

"Hemant Waingankar and Anil Joshi introduced me to Sachin and asked me to see him bat. Probably, I have finished my cricket at that stage. He was batting at the Wankhede nets against Raju Kulkarni, who was a very slippery customer. In the nets you don't really think about no balls and Raju was doing the same. But the manner in which Sachin was punching the ball off the backfoot towards mid-off and mid-on that impressed me," Gavaskar recollected.

Asked what if he would got the chance to bat alongside Tendulkar, Gavaskar said: "I think as far as running between the wicket we would have been very good."

Former Mumbai and Indian skipper Vengsarkar said he handpicked Tendulkar to play for the team after watching him easily negotiating India's best fast bowler at the time, Kapil Dev, in the Wankhede Stadium nets, where the Indian team had come to play against the touring New Zealand team.

"I was the captain (of Mumbai) that time and I heard a lot about him. Vasu (Paranjape) brought him and introduced him to me. Vasu said you should go and watch Sachin play. I said not now but Vasu said no no you should go," Vengsarkar said.

"I was playing my 100th Test and we were practicing at the CCI. I asked Kapil, Maninder to bowl at him and at such a tender age he played them with ease. Then I told (Mumbai) selectors we should pick him at least in the 15 but in the next three days he didn't come for practice. I was a bit livid with him. I told Vasu to ask him the reason and he said I had an exam."

Shastri, who watched Tendulkar from close quarters during the master batsman's classic 148 not out at Sydney in 1992, said according to him that innings was the best of his career.

"In the tour of Pakistan in 1989, Sachin made his debut but got out early. I was lying down in the dressing room and was livid with my dismissal. He took his time and walked upto me after an hour. By the time I calmed down and and he said to me 'I was in a hurry'.

"(During that innings) the time he was at the crease he looked like a fish out of water, but a month later he looked a big shark in the water and continued to be so for the next 25 years," he said.

Talking about Tendulkar's epic 148 not out in Sydney Cricket Groud, his first and one of the best on the Australian soil, Shastri, who was batting along side the master blaster said: "I was just 22 yards away and it was the best place to witness such a wonderful innings. I was witnessing someone just 18 was over to become the first overseas player to score a 100 in Australia. Tendulkar's Sydney innings was strokeplay of the highest order."

Cristiano Ronaldo receives Golden Boot award

MADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo said he still has many years of football to come as he picked up his third Golden Boot award on Wednesday for scoring the most goals in Europe's domestic leagues last season.

Ronaldo shared the award with Luis Suarez, who also scored 31 goals.

At a lavish ceremony in Madrid, Ronaldo said he was surprised so many people got up early for the event after Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Champions League the previous night.

Madrid president Florentino Perez highlighted the Portugal forward's energy and ambition to win as he presented the award.

"I promise to always give the fans the best on the field," Ronaldo said. "My passion, my goals, my assists, my matches. I still have many years left in Madrid."

Ronaldo said although his main aim was to be a good team player, he also acknowledged a liking for individual flair.

"A collective effort is important, but so is individual talent, and I work hard to achieve that," he said.

Suarez picked up his award at a ceremony in Barcelona on October 15.

Ego came between Paes and Bhupathi: Todd Woodbridge

MELBOURNE: "How's the evening going, mate?" asks a handsome gentleman, and before you exclaim with excitement, he introduces himself: "Hi, I am Todd Woodbridge." The humility with which the one of the greatest tennis doubles players of all time, one half of the famous 'Woodies' pair approaches you, looking immaculate in a black suit and a shining tie, makes it super-easy to start the conversation.

Post retirement, Woodbridge served a stint as the coach of the Australian Davis Cup team. "I wear many hats now," the doubles legend tells TOI, before elaborating: "I am a commentator (with Channel Seven), a coach, and a spokesman (for Tennis Australia) too. I look after the tennis development programme in Australia. I mentor coaches and players." The 'second round' of his life isn't that smooth sail, he admits. "When I was playing, all I was bothered was about my next match, and my next banana! Now, there is so much to take care of," he says.

Woodbridge quit the sport in 2005, and his famed 'partner in crime' Mark Woodforde did so five years earlier in 2000. Does he miss the other Woodie? "No, not at all. I spent too much time with him!" he says, before bursting into a laugh, before informing: "He is settled in the US. It's been a few months since I spoke with him." Of course, they did spend a good time together, winning everything on a tennis court in the 90s. They clinched 11 Grand Slam titles, a haul which included five straight Wimbledon trophies, as well as an Olympic gold at Atlanta in 1996.

Sadly, the only pair which challenged their supremacy for a while, split at its peak. "I told Mahesh (Bhupathi) back then, its a bad business decision you are taking." Does he know what led to their split? "Ego," pat comes the reply. "Both have too much ego. Both have strong personalities, especially Lee (Leander Paes)." While pointing out at the 'exact' problem, though, Woodbridge makes it clear he was friends with both. "Both are fantastic guys. I partnered Bhupathi in the last six months of my playing career. I wish all the best for his International Tennis Premier League (ITPL)," he says.

Will the ITPL, and Vijay Amritraj's Champions Tennis League (CTL) work. "The first time should be fine, but the real test of these events will come in the subsequent years," he analyses, before adding: "I got a call from both to commentate, but I have my hands full."

The next day, Woodbridge takes you around the fabulous Australian Open courts, with young players acknowledging him along the way. "A lot of people don't understand that any system takes time to produce champions. They want instant results, which isn't possible. Nick Kyrgios (the talented 19-year-old Aussie) is a product of our development programme. We have three players in top 100, and around 15 in 200. The fruits of our efforts will slowly show now," he says.

You marvel at the Rod Laver Arena, and are left bewildered with what Woodbridge tells you next. "This entire court is covered with a certain fibre material once the Australian Open is over, so that we can hold other events here. A few hours after he won the title in January, Stan Wawrinka was astonished when he returned for a post-match interview. We told him there was a concert to be held here in three days' time."

It's indeed a wonder to see the Aussies make the most of a sports stadium. It is laudable to see how they're making the most of Woodbridge's experience too.

Mallya says Perez set to stay at Force India with 'Hulk'

NEW DELHI: Sahara Force India boss Vijay Mallya confirmed that the team will retain its current driver line-up for the 2015 Formula One season by giving Sergio Perez an extension, something they have already done in the case of Nico Hulkenberg.

Perez has expressed on numerous occasions that he is happy to do a second season at Force India after scoring the team's second-ever podium in Bahrain earlier this season.

Asked whether Force India will have the same pair of drivers next season, Mallya, speaking from Austin, said "absolutely".

The Indian businessman went on to say, "I have said many times before during the year when I have been asked that I am very happy with the drivers line-up that we have at the moment."

Force India had announced last month that Hulkenberg will remain with them. The German returned to the Silverstone squad after doing a season with Sauber.

The official announcement on Perez is expected anytime soon. Besides impressing the team with his driving skills, the presence of the Mexican driver has helped Force India attract many sponsors from the North American country.

With Mexican Grand Prix set to return in 2015 after 23 years, having Perez as one of their drivers will help Force India expand their fan base in the region.

"We already have a Mexican driver, top class Mexican companies as our sponsors. I spent the last week in Mexico, we have signed three additional Mexican sponsors as there is going to be a race there next year," said Mallya during the United States Grand Prix over the weekend.

India's connect with F1 has diminished with no Indian driver on the grid since 2012 and no signs of return for the Indian Grand Prix.

Ever since 16-year-old from Jehan Daruvala has joined the Force India Academy, Mallya has backed teenager to make it to F1.

Daruvala impressed driving karts in Europe and will now be moving to single seaters next season. Mallya feels that Daruvala could be in F1 as early as two years.

"Jehan has done very well. He has every reason to be proud of his achievements. We at Sahara Force India are very proud of his accomplishments. I think he will continue to do well.

"He is naturally talented but for the next two years, he needs to get more and more experience in single seater racing cars and more powerful cars and after that if he continues this upward trajectory of development then F1 will be waiting for him," said Mallya.

Asked whether Force India is ready to give Daruvala the biggest break of his career, Mallya said "absolutely".

Rathore jr wins gold at Asian Shotgun Championships

AL AIN: ManavadityaRathore, son of Olympic silver medallistRajyavardhanRathore, today clinched the gold medal in junior men's trap at the 4th Asian Shotgun Championships here today.

This was India's third gold in the continental tournament. Rathore shot 114 out of 125 to win the junior trap event in a shoot-off.

The 15-year-old has been making steady progress over the years. Nicknamed 'Milo', he won the junior trap shooting title at the National Championships last year.

This is by far his best international performance in a short career, bettering his third-place finish at the Asian Shooting Championships in Almaty last year.

Commenting on Manavaditya's performance, Raninder Singh, President, NRAI said, "I would like to congratulate Manavaditya on winning the Gold today. This is India's third gold in the championship and this showcases India's strength in the world of shooting and how our youngsters like Manavaditya are the rightful stars of the future that India is going to bank on for years.

"However the lack of the required entries resulted in the Junior trap event being converted to a Grand prix which eluded Manavaditya of an Asian Championship Gold but with the precision and accuracy that he has showcased I am sure he is not far away from earning many other big international medals for India."

Other members of the junior trap squad Sharan Susheel and Kismat Chopra shot 113 and 105 respectively. In the senior trap event for men, Kynan Chenai finished 5th in the finals, after having shot an impressive 120 in qualification.

The senior men's trap team finished fourth overall with other members of the team namely Manav and Prithvi Raj Tondaiman shooting 115 and 114 respectively to add to Kynan's tally.

Japan's Kei Nishikori goes from Project 45 to Elite 8

PARIS: After becoming the first Asian man to reach a Grand Slam singles final and coming agonisingly close winning the title, Kei Nishikori will achieve another milestone when he becomes the first player from the continent to compete at the ATP World Tour Finals.

While many other first-time Grand Slam finalists might think falling at the final hurdle at the US Open was something to shout about, Nishikori is determined not to get carried away by the feat because as far as he is concerned -- there is unfinished business to complete.

As he prepares to make his debut in the season-ending spectacular featuring eight of the world's best players, the unassuming Nishikori sat down to have a chat about how a move to the US helped him to become an Asian trailblazer, about the weaknesses he is still working on with his coach Michael Chang and about the weight of expectation on his shoulders.

You were given the "Project 45" nickname when you were starting out in tennis with the aim of surpassing Japan's previous best men's ranking of 46. You have now become the first Asian man to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals so how does it feel for 'Project 45' to be among the 'Elite 8' this year?

"It's a bit different. That was one of the goals I had when I was 18 (to be ranked higher than 46th in the world). Now it's a completely different situation.

"I tried to aim for London last year but (I had to settle with) finishing in the Top 20. It's a great feeling. I have motivation for the good goals so it's a great feeling."

You will be making your debut in the Finals, what are your expectations?

"I might get nervous first time but I'll try to play my best tennis and try not to think too much of it being the Tour Finals.

"It's a great achievement to play in the Finals for the first time. Last year I started thinking about playing there, so it will be really great.

"Beating Novak (Djokovic) in the US Open semi-finals was a great experience and gave me a lot of confidence. So for sure I know I have chance to beat the top players if I can play good, I have some chance to win some matches."

After the year you've had, what do you feel about the 'Project 45' nickname?

"Having that as my first goal (of reaching 45 in the rankings) was great for my career. It's not easy to aim for Top 10 when you are 18 (years old), so it was a great goal for me. It took some time to get there, but I'm very proud that I'm now one of the best players in Japan."

One of the best? Think the rankings say you are the best.

(smiles shyly)

You came agonisingly close to becoming the first Asian man to win a singles Grand Slam title. How do you feel about that now?

"I was really disappointed I couldn't play good tennis in the final because I was playing really well for two weeks and then in the last match I couldn't. But I needed a little more experience as I got a little bit tight in the final.

"Marin (Cilic) played really great tennis so I couldn't really do much. But after that I won two tournaments in Asia. The next goal is to win a Grand Slam but I know it's not easy to go even to the semis or final, so it may take some time but hopefully I can reach a Grand Slam final again."

What more do you have to do to climb that final hurdle?

"I need a little bit more of everything. I need a little bit more experience, you have to be ready mentally to play seven best-of-five-set matches, that's not easy. My body has to be a little more stronger to try and play couple of five sets in two weeks."

Why do you think Asia still does not have a men's singles Grand Slam champion?

"It's a good question. I don't know too (smiling). I really don't know. I know there are lot of talented players in the juniors but when they get older.... I don't know.

"For me it was great that I (moved to) live in the States, and I got a lot of good practice and travelling wise it was a lot easier than staying in Asia."

Do you think you can end Asia's wait next year?

"I won't say next year but hopefully I can make a Grand Slam final again in next couple of years and win it."

SMALLEST GUYS

How do you make sure your slender build does not hold you back against the big six feet (1.83 metres) plus rivals?

"It's not easy to play the big guys, especially since I'm one of the smallest guys on tour. But you see David (Ferrer) has been in the top five ...

"But I have advantage of good footwork. I have something that they don't have. That's the fun things for the tennis. I am improving a lot of my weaknesses. Sometimes I feel it's not easy but I always try to enjoy (the battle) and try to find a way what I have to do.

"I am faster than other players and I can get to a lot of balls. They have big serves, much power, they can finish points with one or two shots. For me it's not like that but I still enjoy matching up to them."

Now that Li Na has retired, you are the torch bearer of Asian tennis. Do you see that as a positive or would you have preferred not to have that added pressure on your shoulders?

"I'm okay. It was very sad to see her retire because what she's done was amazing for Asian tennis.

"Also for me, I got a lot of confidence from seeing her play great tennis and winning Grand Slams. Hopefully I will be in her position soon. Hopefully there will be more Asian players coming up and I can give them confidence as well."

FEEL LIKE I'M FAMOUS

How has your life changed since the US Open?

"A lot of people in Japan now recognise me, even in the US some people recognise me -- I never had that before. It's a great feeling. Feel like I'm famous!

"It's not like I want to be famous but it's a great motivation for me. If you have good attention, you feel more excited. When I go back to Japan, it's not easy as it not as relaxing (as before) but I try to enjoy the moment."

Can you walk down the street in Japan without being stopped or recognised?

"Not really, ha ha ha -- after the US Open it's difficult. But I always try to enjoy it (the attention). I live in the US, so I know it's not always so I try to enjoy it when I'm in Japan."

When Roger Federer asked to hit with you at Wimbledon in 2007, what did you think at the time? Did you pick up any tips?

"When I was young he was my idol so it was an exciting moment. He's the best player in tennis history so I was very excited and very nervous. The excitement was amazing."

You were born six months after your coach Michael Chang won the French Open in 1989. Have you ever seen a recording of it and what did you think?

"I saw Michael's win on video. It's incredible that he won a Grand Slam at 17. Now it's almost impossible to win a Grand Slam when you are young. It's amazing. We play kind of similar tennis so there is a lot to learn from him."

What more can Michael do to improve you as a player?

"We are spending more time on the court together and mentally he's giving me a lot of good tips, changing some techniques. (As a result of his coaching) I am trying to be more aggressive than before and come in a little bit more."

You were tagged 'Project 45' -- once you've finished with your career, what tag do you think will be given to the next Japanese prodigy?

"For sure my best ranking, I want them to pass me for sure... but I know the tennis tour is very tough. Top 10 should be one of the first goals for every player."

Maybe 'Project 1'?

"Ha ha ha, I hope so. I want them to beat my best ranking for sure."

Apart from playing in the Tour Finals, is there anything else you want to do while you are in London?

"London, uhm...shopping? Ha ha ha, is that a good answer? I love shopping. I like shopping for clothes but I think I have to stay focused."

ISL: Nicolas Anelka special downs Kerala Blasters

Written By Unknown on Senin, 03 November 2014 | 22.58

MUMBAI: A moment of magic by that man Nicolas Anelka and his wonderfully struck free-kick helped Mumbai City win 1-0 against Kerala Blasters at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday. Anelka took one step and hit the ball sweetly to the left of Sandip Nandy's goal after Ishfaq Ahmed had upended Johan Letzelter just above the box. It was solid performance by Mumbai City that saw their infamous defence finally holding fort and redeeming their prestige, especially after their 5-1 mauling they received at Chennai.

ISL Points Table

Mumbai started with Deepak Mondal as the right back and the experience of Syed Rahim Nabi in the left and Deepak combined to help them keep shape of the defence. With Central midfielder Letzelter playing solidly , Kerala, who had a come-from-behind victory over Pune, were allowed little breathing space upfront. With midfield winning more balls, and Anelka floating well below the high-line that Kerala defence was holding, their attack carried more potency.

Anelka did break from the right before his goal but his shot was saved. Then the moment came when he hit the free-kick beyond the reach of Nandy . In the second half, Mumbai's writ was larger as they often broke past the Kerala defence. One of the best moments to double the lead came in the 74th minute when Anelka ran down the right and cut the ball for Subash Singh who shot over the bar.

TURNING POINT

Thre free-kick in the 44th minute completely changed the complexion of the game. For Mumbai, who were looking competent in defending, went into the overdrive and troubled the Kerala defence enough to walk away thinking they should have won by a bigger margin.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Nicolas Anelka, it took the maverick Frenchman one moment to change the complexion of the game, and perhaps Mumbai's fortune in this ISL. A sweetly struck freekick made Nandy's carefully constructed wall look stupid when he struck to the goalkeeper's right.

Carlsen-Anand match will be much closer: Abhijeet

NEW DELHI: Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will start as the underdog but has the backing of the chess world this time to put up a better show in the re-match for the World Chess Championship that starts in Sochi, Russia on Friday.

"This time it will be much closer than last time," says Arjuna awardee Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta, who gave Carlsen the tag of 'favourite'.

Anand, who qualified for the rematch by surprisingly winning candidates' tournament earlier this year, backed his performance in the qualifier by winning the Bilbao Final Masters too and seems to be in fine nick ahead of the clash.

Carlsen, on the other hand, has not had the best of times recently although his winning the Qorld Rapid and Blitz title was nothing short of a miracle that made the Norwegian the first player in history to be world champion in all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz - simultaneously.

Carlsen was especially tentative in the Sinquefield Cup in United States a couple of months back where he finished a distant second to Fabiano Caruana of Italy.

While finishing second is never too bad a result, Carlsen's last tournament before the world championship must have dented his confidence as he finished three points behind Caruana.

"If you take the games of Sinquefield Cup into account, Carlsen was not playing too well. Now we know he is not someone who likes to hide any special preparation which in fact means he was in below par form," said Gupta reflecting his thoughts on Carlsen's last big tournament.

"On the other hand, Anand has been at the top of his game with a few expected ups and downs. He won the Bilbao even though his last round loss might have been disappointing and he was clearly the best player in the Candidate's tournament where everyone made more mistakes than him."

Anand lost the last match, losing three and drawing seven games against Carlsen at Chennai last November with a final score of 3.5-6.5 in the favour of Norwegian.

In recent matches this was the first time that a player lost a match without winning a single game.

There are some other things that go in Anand's favour too. At 44, Anand is the second oldest player in the history to 'earn' a rematch after Viktor Kortchnoi made it to meet Anatoly Karpov in 1981.

Mikhail Botwinnik at 50 had dethroned Mikhail Tal in 1961, but then Botwinnik got a direct rematch.

Soon after Anand's victory at the Candidate's former world champion Garry Kasparov had tweeted: "Anand will be underdog to Carlsen, clearly. But chess history has shown rematches have their own dynamics. Rarely a repeat of first".

"It's just four days and the excitement is brewing, heart says Anand, mind says (pauses)...no not Carlsen...but not easy. This one will be different I guess," said Gupta with a smile before signing off.

Djokovic on top of the world after Paris win & fatherhood

PARIS: It's been quite a year for Novak Djokovic, who is driving towards another year-ending number one spot, recently becoming a proud father and winning his third Paris Masters crown for his 600th ATP victory.

The popular 27-year-old Serb said at the beginning of last week that becoming a dad had already made him feel like number one, but he is also doing his talking on the court, breezing through an elite field in the French capital without dropping a set.

His 6-2, 6-3 victory over big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic on Sunday emphasised his dominance in world tennis, but there is still one tournament to go at the season-ending World Tour Finals in London.

His lead over Roger Federer in the ATP rankings is now 1,310 points with up to a possible 1,500 available to the winner in London.

Federer can also pick up a small amount of points when he plays the Davis Cup final for Switzerland against France in Lille but it might be too late by then with Djokovic the man to beat heading to London.

"Two successive titles in London in the last two years gives me reason to believe that I can do well," said Djokovic after his 27th consecutive indoor victory and becoming the first man to successfully defend the title at Bercy.

"Even this year I will have a week off to recharge my batteries, recover a little bit, spend some time with family, and get on the court.

"I'm excited to be there because I think it's one of the most spectacular tennis venues that we have," continued Djokovic who has spent 118 weeks at number one during his career, the seventh highest total ever.

"Also because of Wimbledon and the long history (of tennis in London), so I look forward to that."

The other players to qualify are Federer, Stan Wawrinka, Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, Tomas Berdych, Marin Cilic and Raonic.

The players are split into two pools of four with a round-robin format determining two semi-finalists from each group.

Djokovic says he is prepared for whatever the draw throws up in terms of opponents.

"It's the best eight players in the world in the whole year, so there are not many preferences to be honest.

"But it definitely encourages me the fact that I have played so well this week and that I have won the four last indoor tournaments in the last two years that I've played in.

"Apart from the outdoor hard courts that was my most successful and most preferable surface, and now I guess it's an indoor court.

"I do feel very comfortable playing, returning, serving in these conditions."

The Belgrade native also paid tribute to 17-time Grand Slam winner Federer's fine season that has seen the Swiss win more matches than anyone on Tour as he rose back to world number two.

"He is one of the top contenders to win all the major titles and to compete for the top spot," continued Djokovic.

"Obviously he got used to the racquet change and I think he's swinging through the backhand shot much better now. He improved his game a lot since last year.

"I think maybe he's playing some of the best tennis of his career, in my opinion, and I don't think age really matters in his case.

"But every match that I play, every match that I play and win, gets me closer to holding number one at the end of the year."

Struggling Liverpool faced with rampant Ronaldo

MADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo will be aiming for another record as the Champions League's all-time leading scorer when Real Madrid host a Liverpool side short on confidence at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

Ronaldo's opener in the European champions' 3-0 win at Anfield two weeks ago took him to within one goal of Madrid legend Raul's 71 Champions League goals.

A 12th consecutive victory in all competitions would allow Real to seal their place in the last 16 with two games to spare in Group B.

Liverpool are tied with Swiss champions Basel and Champions League debutants Ludogorets Razgrad in a battle for second place on three points.

However, despite suffering a sixth defeat of the season at Newcastle United on Saturday, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insisted his side won't be overawed by the task in front of them.

"We've worked very hard over a couple of years to get to this level," he said.

"To play Real Madrid at the Bernabeu tells us that we've been doing okay. But, of course, we're in a transition phase. We want to be better and we need to be better. So the game Tuesday night is a wonderful game for us.

"We're still very much in the group to qualify, which is the objective. It's a big ask playing against arguably the best team in the world at the moment.

"But we'll go into it with confidence. The players will be back up again after Saturday's result and we'll go into that game looking to get something from it."

By contrast, Madrid moved to the top of La Liga for the first time this season with a 4-0 thrashing of Granada on Saturday, taking their goal tally in their 11-game winning streak to 46.

"We need to continue this run and we're very happy with the way we're playing. We're in incredible form," said midfielder Luka Modric.

"We want to be comfortable in games and we played well against Granada from the kick-off. The team wants more and the more goals we score the more we want."

Modric's partnership with Toni Kroos in central midfield has rightfully received a lot of praise for their part in turning Madrid's fortunes around after an uncertain few weeks following the departures of Xabi Alonso and Angel di Maria.

"Xabi Alonso was an excellent player for us, but Kroos and I are playing better and better every game," added the Croatian.

"We're steadily getting to know each other and we know what we want to do on the pitch. I think that we're playing very well defensively."

The hosts should also be bolstered by the return of Gareth Bale after five games out with a pelvic muscle injury.

The form of Isco and James Rodriguez during Bale's absence is likely to mean that the Welshman will start on the bench, but Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti dismissed suggestions Bale's return posed him a selection dilemma.

"Everyone thinks that Bale is a problem, but I think he is a player that will help us to be even better," said the Italian.
