Written By Unknown on Senin, 30 September 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Rain played spoilsport as Trinidad and Tobago beat Titans by six runs after D/L method was used for the result in their Champions League Twenty20 match on Monday.

CLT20 Points Table | Scorecard

With this victory, Trinidad jumped to second place with 8 points after three games ahead of Titans, who also have 8 points from four games but with inferior run-rate.

Titans were at 153/6 in 17 overs, six runs behind D/L target, when rain lashed the Motera stadium to halt the tie against Trinidad.

AB de Villiers (23* off 13) and Mangaliso Mosehle (11* off 5) were holding the fort for Titans when the match was stopped due to the rain.

Chasing 189-run target, Titans lost wickets at regular intervals after their openers gave them a rollicking start against Trinidad.

Trinidad reduced Titans to 88/4 in 10.4 overs from 65/0 in 6.3 overs with some brilliant bowling and fielding.

Openers Henry Davis (42) and Jacques Rudolph (31) helped Titans raced to fifty in 5.1 overs. But skipper Davids' wicket rattled their run chase as they lost next three wickets for 23 runs.

Davids smacked two sixes and six fours in his quick-fire 22-ball innings, whereas Rudolph hit four boundaries in his 28-ball knock.

Sent in to bat, opener Evin Lewis and Darren Bravo produced whirlwind half-centuries to power Trinidad & Tobago to 188 for 6 against Titans.

Lewis blasted seven fours and five sixes in his 35-ball 70-run innings and starred in a 109-run partnership with Darren Bravo (63) for the second wicket to set the foundation of a challenging score after being asked to take the first strike by Titans skipper Henry Davids.

T&T lost opener Lendl Simmons (0) early in the innings when he was dismissed by Marchant de Lange in the second over but that didn't affect their innings as Lewis and Bravo took the responsibility on their strong shoulders.

Lewis showed little respect for the bowlers as he plundered a four and two sixes off Morne Morkel in the third over. Bravo too followed suit and clobbered three fours off de Lange in the next over.

Rowan Richards was introduced into the attack then but Lewis treated him with equal disdain as he smacked the bowler for a six and a couple of fours as T&T reached 48 for one in five overs.

Lewis continued his blitzkrieg, picking up two fours and a six in the next two overs to reach his fifty in just 21 balls.

In the ninth over, Lewis sent Henry Davids out of the park over wide long-off and then sent the fielders on a leather hunt with a couple of fours in the 10th over by Farhaan Behardien.

In the 12th over, Bravo got into the act and hammered Richards for a six and a four to leave the bowler bleeding 26 runs in his two overs.

Lewis holed out at the square leg to Richards off van der Merwe in the 13th over.

Bravo didn't allow the wicket to slow down the innings and went on a rampage in the 15th over, hitting three sixes off van der Merwe to take T&T close to the 150 mark.

New man Nicolas Pooran (11), who had hit a six in the 14th over, was then dismissed by Davids when he was caught at deep midwicket by van der Merwe.

However, Navin Stewart sent Davids sailing over long-on in the next delivery and then picked up a four off Morkel in the next over as T&T accumulated runs thick and fast.

Bravo was finally dismissed by de Lange in the 18th over when the bowler disturbed his stumps. The left-handed batsman had five boundaries and four sixes in his 44-ball innings, while Stewart (23) got out in the last over.

Teams:

Trinidad & Tobago: Denesh Ramdin (capt/wk), Samuel Badree, Darren Bravo, Rayad Emrit, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed, Sunil Narine, Nicolas Pooran, Ravi Rampaul, Lendl Simmons, Navin Stewart.

Rain washes out Sunrisers-Heat match

NEW DELHI: Incessant rain played spoilsport as the Sunrisers Hyderabad-Brisbane Heat Champions League Twenty20 match was called off without a single ball being bowled at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Earlier, due to the arrival of rains at the fag end of the Titans innings, Trinidad and Tobago won by six runs after D/L method was used for the result in their match.

As a result of the washout, Sunrisers Hyderabad have been eliminated from the 2013 Champions League Twenty20.

On the other hand, as Brisbane Heat were already out of contention, no combination of results would have helped the Australian side make the semifinals.

Volts beat Lions in a thrilling Super Over

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 29 September 2013 | 22.58

JAIPUR: All-rounder Jimmy Neesham did the star turn with the bat and ball as Otago Volts beat Highveld Lions in the one-over eliminator in a thrilling group match to place themselves in a strong position for a semifinal berth in the Champions League Twenty20 on Sunday.

CLT20 Points Table | Scorecard

Neesham first blasted a 25-ball unbeaten 52 to rescue Otago from a precarious position to take his side to 167 for seven and tie the match. In the Super Over, the first in this edition of CLT20, he bowled a superb over to give Otago victory in an edge-of-the-seat thriller which saw fortunes fluctuating from one side to the other.

The Lions, who are now knocked out of the tournament, looked like they would notch up their first win of the tournament when pacer Sohail Tanvir bowled a brilliant over to restrict Otago to just 13 runs in the Super Over at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

The Lions also began the Super Over with a bang with Quinton de Kock, who smashed a brilliant unbeaten 109 in his side's innings earlier, hitting a four and a six in the first two deliveries of the one-over eliminator.

They needed four runs from as may deliveries but stunningly lost the plot in the nerve-wrecking Super Over as Jean Symes was out in the fourth ball, leaving the Lions needing three from two balls and two from the last ball.

Dwaine Pretorius was run out in the last ball, which meant that the Lions were all out for 13 in the Super Over as Otago emerged victorious, their 15th T20 match win on the trot.

The scores were tied even in the one-over eliminator but Otago emerged winners as they hit one more boundary than the Lions in the match.

With Sunday's win, Otago were on 10 points from three matches -- two wins and one washed out game -- and they are now in a strong position to qualify for the semifinals.

Chasing 168 for a win, Otago were placed at a precarious 103 for six at the end of 15 overs, needing 13 runs an over from the remaining five overs to win the match before Neesham turned the match on its head.

He struck a flurry of fours and sixes to take Otago near the target of 168 only to fumble in the last over.

Otago needed just 11 runs from the last over but they could score just 10 from it, needing the match to be decided via one-over eliminator.

Neesham hit a six in the first ball of the last over bowled by Tanvir and Otago needed just run-a-ball from the remaining five deliveries. But Neesham and Neil Wagner could get just four runs for the match to be decided by Super Over.

Earlier, opener de Kock slammed a blistering unbeaten 109 to propel Highveld Lions to a challenging 167 for four.

Wicketkeeper-batsman de Kock struck 10 fours and five sixes in his brilliant 63-ball unbeaten knock, the second century of this edition of CLT20, as he carried the bat through the innings after his side was asked to bat.

He shared 76 runs in 6.1 overs for the fourth wicket with Jean Symes (20 off 15 balls) after the Lions were reduced to 73 for three in the 12th over to set a challenging target.

The South African side were 59 for one at the halfway mark but added another 108 runs from the next 10 overs with de Kock raining fours and sixes. He took 21 runs from Nick Beard in the 16th over with the help of a four and two sixes.

The Lions made a sound start and added 44 in seven overs through Rassie van de Dussen (17) and de Kock. They suffered a twin blow as Beard removed Bauvama (13) and skipper Alviro Petersen (0) were out at the same score of 73.

But, de Kock continued to play freely and reached his 100 in the final over from just 60 balls, hitting 10 boundaries and four sixes. This was second Twenty20 hundred in 47 matches.

For Otago, Beard was most successful bowler picking two wickets for 31 while James McMillan and Neil Wagner got a wicket apiece.

Teams:

Otago: Brendon McCullum (capt/wk), Nick Beard, Neil Broom, Ian Butler, Derek de Boorder, Nathan McCullum, James McMillan, James Neesham, Hamish Rutherford, Ryan ten Doeschate, Neil Wagner.

Lions: Alviro Petersen (capt), Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Imran Tahir , Ethan O'Reilly, Dwaine Pretorius, Sohail Tanvir, Jean Symes, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Rassie van der Dussen, Hardus Viljoen.

India beat Malaysia 3-0 to win Johor Cup

JOHOR BAHRU: A dominant India triumphed in the 3rd Sultan of Johor Cup with a thumping 3-0 victory over hosts Malaysia in the title clash of the under-21 hockey tournament on Sunday.

Amon Mirash Tirkey (22nd), Affan Yusof (52) and Manprret (64th) were the goal-scorers for India who made up for last year's defeat in the final against Germany.

India were the deserving winners on a day when Malaysia failed to find the spark that had seen them make the final with relative ease.

The visitors created a lot of opportunities and had an early chance in the 5th minute when Satbir Singh took a snap shot but it was padded away by Mohd Hafizuddin Othman.

The initial forays gave India the confidence and they were awarded a penalty corner in the 13th minute but Amit Rohidas's attempt was charged down by Izad Hakimi Jamaluddin.

In a quick counter-attack, Mohd Syamim Yusof nearly scored after evading three defenders, but he sent his shot wide of the post, much to the relief of keeper Harjot Singh.

India drew first blood in the 22nd minute after a fine run on the left by Kothajit Singh whose cross came off the stick of Faiz Helmi and fell nicely for Tirkey to score.

The Malaysian defenders were loose in their marking and that allowed Affan Yusof to move into the semi circle and his reverse stick hit went inches wide.

India forced three consecutive penalty corners in the 35th minute but the Malaysian defenders held firm. However, they paid a heavy price as Muhammad Azri Hassan was yellow carded and Malaysia had to start the second half a man down.

India forced two penalty corners in the 42nd and 45th minutes and off the second, Rohidas's drag flick was palmed out by Hafizuddin.

Malaysia got their chance in the 47th minute when they were awarded a penalty corner. But Shahril Saabah was on the bench and a variation was used. Izad Hakimi had a slap shot that was saved by the keeper.

Another penalty corner in the 52nd minute for Malaysia was kept out by India and from a counter attack, Ramandeep Singh outwitted Kavin Karthik for a clear run at goal.

He relayed the ball to Yusof who scored easily to make it 2-0 for India.

India created several chances and finally skipper Manpreet converted their eight penalty corner in the 64th minute to make it 3-0 as India sealed the title.

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 28 September 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: After being put into bat, Brisbane Heat got off to a bad start when they lost Dominic Michael early to Mohit Sharma in their Champions League Twenty20 match at JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.

Scorecard

Sharma had Michael (0) caught by Subramaniam Badrinath in the first over itself after Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl against Brisbane Heat.

Chennai, IPL runners-up this year, are among the favourites to lift the Champions League for a second time after clinching the trophy in 2010.

And the sheer depth in the line-up was displayed on Thursday when Suresh Raina smashed a quickfire half-century while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni produced a belligerent unbeaten knock of 63 for CSK to post a stunning 202 on the board against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Brisbane, on the other hand, are all but eliminated from the competition. Handed defeats in the two matches they have played so far, Brisbane need to win on Saturday to stay alive in the event.

The depleted Australian outfit, which failed miserably with the bat in the games against Trinidad & Tobago and the Titans, will be expecting its batsmen to show more responsibility.

Teams:

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni (Capt. & wk), Michael Hussey, Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, Subramaniam Badrinath, Dwayne Bravo, Albie Morkel, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jason Holder, Mohit Sharma.

NEW DELHI: After being put into bat, Brisbane Heat got off to a bad start when they lost openers Dominic Michael and James Hopes early in their Champions League Twenty20 match at JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.

Scorecard

Mohit Sharma had Michael (0) caught by Subramaniam Badrinath in the first over itself before Albie Morkel struck to dismiss Hopes (20) after Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl.

Chennai, IPL runners-up this year, are among the favourites to lift the Champions League for a second time after clinching the trophy in 2010.

Against Korea, the Indians came up with a commanding performance and dominated the share of exchanges in the first half with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

It took India just seven minutes to open the scoring through drag-flicker Rohidas who converted a penalty corner with precision that Korean goalkeeper Lee Se Young had no answer.

India doubled their lead two minutes later through a field goal from Satbir after he was set up by Harjeet Singh.

Talwinder made it 3-0 for the Indians four minutes from half time through another field strike.

The Koreans, however, managed to pull one back three minutes later when You Seung Ju scored from a penalty corner.

India slowed down the pace after the lemon break and conceded a few penalty corners but the Koreans failed to utilise the scoring chances.

After a slow start to the second half, India gradually took control of the proceedings and scored three more field goals to run away with the match.

Amon Mirash Tikey scored India's fourth goal in the 57th minute before Ramandeep scored his fifth goal in the tournament five minutes later. Yusof completed the rout for Korea five minutes from the hooter.

India's chief coach Gregg Clark was full of praise for his wards after their sterling performance.

"It was a good performance and this surely gives me a welcome headache as we have several more players back in India that are fighting for a place in the final 18 to the Junior World Cup," Clark said.

"We are playing well and credit to the boys who are executing our tactics and plans well on the pitch. As a coach this is something we look towards hence the performance in the last two matches has been on the rise," he added.

Viru, Yuvi eye redemption at Challenger

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 25 September 2013 | 22.58

INDORE: Team India's batting mainstay Virat Kohli will look to get some batting practice ahead of the ODI series against Australia while Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh will be aiming to get back into national selectors' radar when Delhi meet India Blue in Challenger Series opener.

Kohli, who is expected to play a major part during India's seven-match ODI series against Australia, will like to get into the groove after a six-week break from cricket. Virender Sehwag's final shot at redemption starts with this tournament.

The 'Nawab of Najafgarh' hasn't played any competitve cricket for six months since being dropped from the Indian squad. This will be the first serious tournament that he will be playing and obviously he would like to get some runs under his belt before he takes on West Indies A in the first-class matches next month.

Since being dropped, Sehwag had gone to the MRF Pace Academy in Chennai, where he practised on bouncy tracks against the academy bowlers and under the watchful eyes of chief coach Glenn McGrath.

Sehwag, who would be 35 in another four weeks time, knows that his fight to get into the Indian team starts from this tournament and if the returns are not favourable, it might not augur well for him as far as his future in international cricket is concerned.

For Yuvraj, the Challenger series will be an ideal platform to build on the good start that he has got in the limited overs series against West Indies A recently.

The scores of 123, 40, 61 and 52 in three List A and a Twenty20 game has provided Yuvraj with the momentum which he would like to keep up with.

For some of the others in both the squads, this will be an important match. Left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra, whose international career is as good as over, will like to keep the IPL franchises interested in him while young Unmukt Chand would like to use this opportunity to enhance his reputation as one whose performance should be closely monitored.

In the India Blue squad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar would like to shed off his rustiness after a break while R Vinay Kumar would also be eyeing for one of reserve pacer's slot in the squad.

India thrash Pakistan 4-0 in Johor Cup

JOHOR BAHRU (Malaysia): India pumped in four goals in the second session in a sizzling display of attacking hockey to post a comprehensive 4-0 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the Sultan of Johor Cup Under-21 tournament on Wednesday.

The Indians, who completely outplayed their opponents, struck three goals in a space of 11 minutes after resumption through Sukhmonjit Singh (38th and 46th minutes) and Imran Khan (45th) before Ramandeep Singh fired in his fourth goal of the tournament in the 61st minute.

It was a spectacular performance by the Indians in the second half that saw them win by a huge margin over the Pakistanis who were on equal terms with their neighbours till the half time.

The Indians were a completely different outfit in the second session, which turned out to be a completely one-sided affair as they dictated the pace of the game by using both the flanks well and distributing the ball nicely to mount raids into the rival's striking circle almost at will.

With Wednesday's win, their third on the trot, India are on top of the league table along with hosts Malaysia with nine points from three victories from as many matches. The Indians are in a strong position to make it to the final.

With two matches left to be played by all six teams in the fray, Pakistan are on third spot with six points, Argentina and Korea on one point each, while England are yet to open their account.

The top two teams after the round robin matches will play in the final, while the third and fourth-place outfits will fight for the bronze medal.

The first goal came in the third minute into the second half from India's fourth penalty corner. Amit Rohidas did not take the strike and instead relayed to Sukhmonjit who slammed the ball home with a pile driver.

Imran Khan then made it 2-0 for India in the 45th minute as he connected a fine pass from the right by Harjeet Singh. Ramandeep then earned a penalty stroke in the next minute and Sukhmonjit scored his second goal of the match and shut the game on Pakistan.

It was, however, Pakistan who started off the match on a fast pace while India were content with stroking the ball around, awaiting the Pakistani players to make mistakes.

Pakistan had a first look at the goal via a penalty corner by Mohammad Tousiq in the fifth minute but Indian custodian Harjot Sing was equal to the task.

The Pakistan trio of Umar Bhutta, Muhammad Dilber and Muhammad Umair strung some neat passes together but could not pose a danger on the Indian goal.

In the 15th minute, India almost earned the lead but Amit Rohidas's drag-flick off a penalty corner hit the upright.

India came out in the second session with all guns blazing and took just three minutes to earn a penalty corner and take the lead.

Instead of taking the shot himself, Amit Rohidas relayed the ball to Sukhmonjit whose flick sailed into the roof of the Pakistani net.

The second goal came in the 45th minute from a fine effort by Harjeet Singh who dribbled past a couple of defenders on the right flank and sent a square pass to Imran Khan who slotted the ball into an empty goal with Pakistan goalkeeper Mazhar wrong-footed.

Barely had the cheers died down that India were awarded a penalty stroke when Ramandeep was brought down in full flight by Tousiq inside the striking circle. Sukhmonjit stepped up to put the ball past Mazhar for a 3-0 lead.

In the 61st minute, Kothajit Singh broke through on the left and set up a simple tap in for Ramandeep to score India's fourth goal and the humiliation was complete.

India play Korea in their fourth round-robin league match on Thursday.

Moyes confirms RVP out of Liverpool tie

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 24 September 2013 | 22.58

Manchester United manager David Moyes expects to be without striker Robin van Persie for the League Cup third-round tie with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The Dutch international has been nursing a groin injury he suffered in training recently which forced him to miss United's shock 4-1 defeat by Manchester City in a dramatic derby encounter last weekend.

Moyes had hoped to have Van Persie, the leading scorer in England last season with 30 goals in all competitions, available for the visit of Liverpool.

Now Moyes has said the 30-year-old is poised to miss the match, and is doubtful for the defending champions' forthcoming Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion.

"I don't think he'll play," Moyes told a news conference on Tuesday. "But I think he has an outside chance for Saturday."

Moyes admitted the manner of his side's 4-1 thrashing by City, his first derby since succeeding Alex Ferguson as United manager, had left him stunned.

"It shocked me, but when you're a football manager for the length of time I've been you are always going to have shocks," Moyes said.

"But it's gone now so I can't do anything about it," the former Everton boss added. "You can't dwell too long on it. We're looking to get the next game started and trying to win.

"It's always a big game whenever you play any cup tie, but especially I think when you play Liverpool against Manchester United. It maybe takes on a bigger significance than people would expect.

In recent years the League Cup has been seen as a 'development' competition by managers of leading English clubs, who've often rested their first-choice players for more important Premier League or European assignments.

But the City result has given Wednesday's match a different context for many United fans and Moyes acknowledged the conflicting interests surrounding this particular clash with Liverpool.

"I think my idea was always to focus on every competition," Moyes explained.

"It's always been (the mentality) here to win. I do think the Capital One (League) Cup is a route to give as many young players an much opportunity as we can.

"The draw sometimes in the competition gives you reasons to do that. But obviously this is a really big tie that came out of the hat first.

"I'm still getting to know all the players here and how they react to situations. I'll get the chance to know a few more of them this week.

"Hopefully, they will show me what they can do." Liverpool have Luis Suarez available again now the Uruguay striker has served his 10-match ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic last season.

Suarez's previous matches against the 'Red Devils' include a racism row with United defender Patrice Evra in 2011.

But Moyes tried to play down the importance of Suarez's anticipated return on Wednesday by saying: "I think it means Liverpool have got a really good player back.

"Does it change the complexion? I don't know. I'm not looking at Liverpool too much except that the qualities of Luis Suarez are very good."

Meanwhile, Moyes refused to comment on claims made Tuesday by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez that United made a late bid to derail the Spanish giants' signing of Gareth Bale, for a reported world transfer fee, from Tottenham Hotspur.

"If I was I wouldn't tell you," said Moyes. "We don't talk about it. "We only talk about the players we think there is a reason to talk about and I wouldn't comment on that."

CLT20: Lewis, Bravo steady Trinidad

NEW DELHI: Pacer Ishant Sharma gave Sunrisers Hyderabad crucial breakthrough by dismissing Evin Lewis (22 off 14) after a brisk 49-run stand for the second wicket. Lewis edged Sharma straight to the man behind the stumps leaving Hyderabad two down.

Lewis and Darren Bravo rescued Trinidad & Tobago from early blow and put up 49-run stand in 34 balls.

Dale Steyn struck on the first delivery of the match to send back Lendl Simmons after Hyderabad invited Trinidad & Tobago to bat in the CLT20 clash.

Steyn got Simmons (0) caught behind by Parthiv Patel, giving Hyderabad a terrific start.

"The pitch still has some dampness because of the rain. This is the ground where we have chased which should be easy to do here. We played all our qualifiers here, so we know the ground well which will give us an advantage," said Hyderabad captain Shikhar Dhawan.

Isco can be almost as good as me: Zizou

MADRID: Former France and Real Madrid great Zinedine Zidane believes Spain playmaker Isco could be almost as good as him one day, club coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday.

Isco, 21, has become a firm favourite since joining the nine-times European champions from Malaga in the close season for a fee of 30 million euros ($40.5 million).

He has netted four goals in five La Liga appearances, the same as Real's Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, and also scored in last week's 6-1 Champions League victory at Galatasaray.

"For Isco to be compared with Zidane is not bad after the few games he has played," said Ancelotti of the Frenchman who is now one of his assistants at the Bernabeu.

"He is very similar in terms of ability and mentality," the Italian told a news conference. "I asked (if Isco was as good as him) and Zidane said 'no, not yet but he could be very close in the future'."

Real play their next La Liga match at Elche on Wednesday (2000 GMT) before hosting city rivals Atletico in Saturday's Madrid derby (2000).

CLT20: Rain washes out MI-OV clash

Written By Unknown on Senin, 23 September 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Rain played spoilsport in the Champions League Twenty20 matches today with the second game between IPL champions Mumbai Indians and New Zealand side Otago Volts also being abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Points Table

The umpires waited till the toss time of 7:30pm before taking a decision to abandon the Group A match. Since it was raining, though not that heavy as compared to the time of first match, the umpires decided to call off the MI-Otago match without calling the two captains for the toss.

The amount of water due to persistent rain at the playing arena of the Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera was such that it looked like a swimming pool with huge puddles of water at the outfield though the wicket was kept covered.

The two sides got two points each for the abandoned match and the result would dent Mumbai Indians' chances of reaching the semifinals as they had lost to Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in their opening match on Saturday.

New Zealand T20 champions Otago had reached the main tournament after finishing on top in the qualifiers and it was to be their first match today. They had impressed immensely in the qualifiers by winning all three of its matches to finish atop the standings.

En route the main draw, Otago defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad, Pakistan's Faisalabad Wolves and Sri Lankan outfit Kandurata Maroons.

Heavens had opened up just after the toss was held for the first match of the day between Perth Scorchers and Lions in Group A. That led to the stadium resembling a lake rather than a cricket field.

Rains continued persistently though eased off in intensity, and it was just a matter of time that the second match was also called off to the huge disappointment of the fans who had turned up in large numbers.

The fans, who had come to watch the match, must have been a disappointed lot as they would have wanted to see Sachin Tendulkar to bat.

The veteran batsman, playing his last tournament for MI, could bat again here as the Mumbai outfit play Lions on September 27.

Earlier during the day, rain also forced abandonment of match between Perth Scorchers and Highveld Lions.

If the match had taken place, this would have been the first meeting between Scorchers and Lions in the short history of the Champions League T20.

The Lions, in last year's campaign, had beaten Mumbai Indians, CSK and Delhi Daredevils en route to the final while in the 2010-11 tournament, they had beaten Mumbai Indians and Guyana but failed to progress ahead.

Steyn bats for India-South Africa series

MOHALI: Dale Steyn does not want the standoff between the BCCI and CSA to result in a curtailed series between India and South Africa later this year as the speedster says the two teams share a "great cricketing rivalry".

"It would be quite nice if India come to South Africa. There has always been a great rivalry between the two sides," said Steyn.

The BCCI's decision to invite the West Indies to tour India in November effectively means the schedule for India's tour to South Africa will have to be shortened.

A final decision in this regard will only be taken after the BCCI's Annual General Meeting in Chennai on September 29. The BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel and Cricket South Africa CEO Haroon Lorgat had a meeting on the sidelines of the ICC's Chief Executives conclave in Dubai but the discussions failed to break the deadlock.

The dispute is reported to be fuelled by BCCI's dissatisfaction that CSA appointed Lorgat to the chief executive position despite objections from BCCI. Lorgat had been at loggerheads with the BCCI while he was the chief executive of the ICC before taking up his current position.

Steyn said he is eagerly waiting for his duel with India's new batting sensation Shikhar Dhawan when the country tour the Proteas for Test and ODI series.

"Shikhar (Dhawan) is in some good form right now. It will be nice to have that contest especially now that I know him well. It will be a great battle between good friends as well as strength and strength because he is batting really well at the moment," Steyn said of his Sunrisers Hyderabad teammate.

Coming back from an injury, Steyn said he is working hard to get back to top shape ahead of South Africa's domestic season.

"I haven't played for a while or done gym work. But otherwise, I am not really conservative in my approach. I am not afraid of getting injured again. I've just got to remember that probably it's just a little bit of stiffness that has crept in," he said ahead of his team's match against Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.

Champions League is Steyn's first competitive outing since he picked up a side strain and groin injury during the Champions Trophy in England towards the middle of June.

"I am just taking it easy. There is no point in going full tilt from the first ball; you have to build it up. I feel like every game that I have played so far on the tournament, I have gotten better," he said.

Steyn said Champions League has provided him with the "perfect platform" to get back in shape.

"You get a couple of hours of competitive cricket and you can stand in the field for 20 overs. It's not exactly the ideal preparation for Test match cricket but I think it's a good start for me.

"I don't think you want to jump straight into the shark tank with the longer version, it's quite difficult, so this is about getting perfect," he said.

Steyn said they are a happy bunch of youngsters and everyone shares a "great camaraderie".

"It's like that last season too, during this year's IPL. We have been together for a while now and there is a great camaraderie among the players, the family members and everyone who is here. We have gotten to know each other very well".

'Don't harp on Tendulkar retirement'

MUMBAI: Advising the media to stop harping constantly on the retirement plans of Sachin Tendulkar, Cricket Board's senior employee Prof. Ratnakar Shetty today said here that the senior India cricketer is the best person to decide on the matter.

"There have been so many debates on this. I have always said that no one else is better than him to talk about his retirement. So please stop worrying about that. He has been playing international cricket for the last 20-21 years," Shetty said on the sidelines of the event to announce the new season of Coca-Cola Cricket Cup U-16.

"This debate has been going on since 2007....When will he retire, Sachin will retire or not... We don't have to discuss on this. We should respect the decision of such a great player. I think till the time he can play cricket and give his service to India, let us all enjoy that and let us not discuss on when he retires," said the BCCI general manager for game development.

Shetty said there was no truth in reports that chief selector Sandeep Patil had met Tendulkar and asked for his future plans after the BCCI pencilled in an unscheduled tour against the West Indies at home in November, comprising a two-Test series and a three-game ODI rubber.

"The chairman has disclosed that he hasn't spoken to Sachin in 10 months. If the media wants to speculate, then it is not important for the selector to issue any clarification. You (media) are doing your work and we do ours. Everytime, we cannot satisfy you. We cannot take your stories forward. This is how it will keep going on," he said.

Patil had denied speaking to Tendulkar and said, "It's always a pleasure to meet Sachin, but I have not met him for the last 10 months. I have not called him, neither has he called me. We have not discussed anything, It's all non-sense," when reacting to the report.

Modi doesn't want Srini's re-election

NEW DELHI: Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi was his usual outspoken self when he said it will be a "doomsday" for the Indian cricket if N Srinivasan gets re-elected as BCCI president at the board's AGM on September 29.

"Across the globe, the fans, advertisers and administrators will be disappointed at this if Srinivasan gets re-elected. A wrong message would be sent. It will be a doomsday for Indian cricket," said Modi.

Srinivasan has declared that he will contest for the top post in the upcoming Board elections in Chennai.

Srinivasan is bidding to get re-elected as BCCI president for the third year running under the Board's two plus one year tenure rule, having completed two years at the helm.

Srinivasan has been under a lot of pressure since the spot-fixing scandal broke out and his son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings team official Gurunath Meiyappan's name cropped up in investigations into betting during the Indian Premier League's sixth season held in April-May.

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association's president stepped aside in June as the BCCI chief and let former president Jagmohan Dalmiya take over the day-to-day work. However, he chaired the meeting of the disciplinary committee held in Delhi earlier this month that imposed life bans on cricketers S Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan following a probe by BCCI's anti-corruption and security unit chief Ravi Sawani for indulging in spot-fixing in IPL6.

Modi said Srinivasan must quit if he has any sense of morality.

"Issue of morality is key here. The game of cricket in India is more than religion, it cuts across all sections of the society and reverred and followed passionately. I am sad to see this. Only way to get rid of this menace is joining hands of both fans and media," he told 'Times Now'.

Modi recently got a big relief from a Delhi court, which has restrained the BCCI from holding its special general meeting (SGM) on September 25 to consider the report of the disciplinary committee on him for alleged financial irregularities in running of the cricket league.

Modi said he was surprised to see South Zone associations lobbying for BCCI president, most of whose members are staunch Srinivasan loyalists.

"The credibility of Indian cricket is at stake. The world is watching us and I am really surprised to see that all my colleagues of South of India have chosen to ignore the call of all the fans and cricketers around the country and world. They still support somebody who is tainted," he added.

Vettel wins Singapore GP to extend lead

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 22 September 2013 | 22.58

SINGAPORE: Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel cruised to a third straight Singapore Grand Prix victory on Sunday and moved 60 points clear of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso after a dominant drive under the floodlights at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Formula One Stats 2013

The German led from pole to flag and lapped on average almost two seconds quicker than his rivals to finish 32.6 seconds clear of Alonso and take another big step towards a fourth successive title with six races remaining.

Kimi Raikkonen shrugged off back pain to climb from 13th on the grid to third for Lotus in a challenging race that was held up by one decisive safety car period when Daniel Ricciardo crashed his Toro Rosso into the barriers on lap 26.

"Yes, yes, that's what I call in control," Vettel shouted over the team radio after chalking up his seventh win of the season and 33rd of his career.

"The car felt absolutely fantastic. This is absolutely a team effort."

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said Vettel, who was again booed on the podium from some in the crowd below, had been in a league of his own after "one of his best ever drives".

Vettel was challenged briefly by fellow-German Nico Rosberg, who was second on the grid, on the run to the first turn but once he held off the Mercedes, he controlled the race.

Alonso again used a charging start and brilliant strategy to climb from seventh on the grid and keep his title hopes alive. He gambled on pitting for a change of tyres during the safety car period and nursing his Ferrari all the way to the flag on medium tyres.

"We knew we didn't have the pace today so we had to invent something with a different strategy from the other teams," said the Spaniard. "It paid off at the end.

"We are in a position in the championship where we have nothing to lose."

Raikkonen, who will join Alonso at Ferrari next season, duplicated the Spaniard's strategy and was able to hold on for third place from the fast-charging Mercedes duo of Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, who opted to stay out behind the safety car.

Alonso's Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa finished in sixth place with McLaren's Jenson Button and Sergio Perez claiming the next two spots ahead of Nico Hulkenburg's Sauber and Adrian Sutil in a Force India.

Vettel's team mate Mark Webber briefly climbed up to fourth place in the closing stages but his Red Bull lost power on the last lap and he slipped out of the top 10.

There was also disappointment for Romain Grosjean, who started third on the grid but retired on lap 33 after his Lotus suffered a pneumatic system failure and was called in by his team to retire in the pits.

Openers get Titans off to decent start

NEW DELHI: After being put into bat and getting off to a good start, Titans lost opener Jacques Rudolph when he was run out in their Champions League Twenty20 match in Ranchi on Sunday.

Scorecard

The Davids-Rudolph duo put up a solid 46-run stand for the opening wicket right after Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl.

However, the party was shot-lived when a mix-up between Rudolph and Davids led to the former being run out for 21 runs.

Playing for the second time in front of his home crowd, Dhoni would know the importance of starting well in this competitive tournament after they failed to make the semifinals of the last edition in South Africa due to defeats in their first two encounters.

Two-time IPL champions, the Super Kings, boast of a star-studded line up with the likes of India skipper Dhoni, Murali Vijay, Faf du Plessis and Michael Hussey around whom the CSK batting will revolve.

On the other hand, the Titans, who are up against their teammates Albie Morkel and Plessis, would be well aware of their task in hands while playing one of the most successful franchise in T20 cricket.

The South African side will be buoyed by the presence of pacer Morne Morkel and AB De Villiers, and would bank on their valuable experience of the sub-continental condition to go the distance in this cash-rich league.

Teams:

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni (Capt. & wk), R Ashwin, S Badrinath, Dwayne Bravo, Jason Holder, Michael Hussey, Ravindra Jadeja, Albie Morkel, Suresh Raina, Mohit Sharma, Murali Vijay.

Titans: Henry Davids (Capt.), Farhaan Behardien, Marchant de Lange, AB de Villiers, Heino Kuhn, Morne Morkel, Mangaliso Mosehle (wk), Rowan Richards, Jacques Rudolph, Roelof van der Merwe, David Wiese.

Sachin falls as Mumbai Indians crumble

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 21 September 2013 | 22.58

NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians lost their top-order cheaply as they failed to withstand a fiery Rajasthan Royals pace attack in the inaugural match of the Champions League T20 in Jaipur.

Scorecard

Vikramjeet Malik started the party for Rajasthan when he dismissed Mumbai Indians opener Dwayne Smith and Dinesh Karthik in the second and sixth over respectively.

Malik first caught Smith (9) plumb before the right-arm medium pacer knocked out the stumps of wicketkeeper Karthik (2).

Soon after, Stuart Binny got the prized scalp of the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar (15) when the senior India batsman got a wicked outside edge that was taken comfortably by wicketkeeper Sanju Samson.

Earlier, Rajasthan Royals captain Rahul Dravid won the toss and decided to bowl following an initial delay of 15 minutes due to a wet outfield.

The fact that the tournament will be the last one for Tendulkar, who will be pitted against another great and contemporary Dravid at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, makes the contest even more special.

Rajasthan can take confidence from the fact that they would be starting their campaign in their own den, where they had won all their eight matches during the sixth edition of the IPL.

On the other hand, Mumbai Indians have a formidable team with the right balance and options in all departments.

Teams:

Rajasthan Royals: Rahul Dravid (Capt.), Ajinkya Rahane, Shane Watson, Sanju Samson (wk), Stuart Binny, Brad Hodge, Ashok Menaria, Kevon Cooper, James Faulkner, Vikramjeet Malik, Rahul Shukla.

Mumbai Indians: Sachin Tendulkar, Dwayne Smith, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Rohit Sharma (Capt.), Keiron Pollard, Ambati Rayudu, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Harbhajan Singh, Rishi Dhawan, Mitchell Johnson, Pragyan Ojha .

Vettel storms to pole in Singapore GP

SINGAPORE: Sebastian Vettel stormed to his fifth pole position of the season Saturday as he strengthened his bid to leap closer to a fourth straight world title at the Singapore Grand Prix.

The young German timed a scorching 1min 42.841sec around the spot-lit Marina Bay street circuit to take first place on the grid ahead of Mercedes' Nico Rosberg.

Lotus driver Romain Grosjean will start third, ahead of Vettel's Red Bull teammate Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, second in the overall standings behind Vettel, could only manage sixth fastest ahead of McLaren's Jenson Button, Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Gutierrez.

But the evening belonged, once again, to Vettel, who set the two fastest times and will now be favourite to claim his third win in a row in Singapore and his fourth out of the last five races.

Hamilton topped the standings in a swiftly shifting first qualifying period, ahead of Button, Alonso, Sergio Perez and Rosberg.

Red Bull's Webber and Vettel, one of only the few using the slower medium tyres in the opening stansa, were sixth and seventh.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa escaped the drop with a late lap which pushed him from 18th to 13th. Paul Di Resta and Pastor Maldonado, and both Caterhams and both Marussias, missed out.

Rosberg was leading Q2 from his teammate Hamilton with a super-fast 1:43.892 -- until Vettel started his flying lap.

The young German, bouncing over kerbs and speeding just inches (centimetres) from the track walls, obliterated Rosberg's time by nearly a second as he screamed round in 1:42.905.

Vettel, Webber, Rosberg and Hamilton led the cars into the Q3 shoot-out, with Nico Hulkenberg, Ferrari-bound Kimi Raikkonen and McLaren's Perez outside the top 10.

It was no surprise that Vettel stayed fastest, but he did it in impressive style, lowering his previous time and earning enough breathing space to garage early.

However, there were some nervy moments when Webber threatened his time -- and a relieved Vettel punched the air as he watched his Australian teammate finish in a slower time.

The 26-year-old has a 53-point lead in the standings and victory on Sunday will put him closer to matching Michael Schumacher and Juan Manuel Fangio by winning four championships in a row.

UEFA chiefs back winter WC in 2022

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 20 September 2013 | 22.58

The 54-member federations of European governing body UEFA are unanimously in favour "in principle" of moving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to a different time of the year, UEFA president Michel Platini confirmed on Friday.
The tournament, which is usually held in June and July, would run into scorching temperatures in Qatar and governing officials, including Platini and world governing boss Sepp Blatter, have entertained the idea of switching the tournament to what would be the European winter season.

"Concerning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, there are two things. First the FIFA president (Blatter) will speak about 2022 at the next FIFA executive committee meetings (October 3 and 4 at Zurich).

"Also, the European federations have declared unanimously to be in agreement on the principle that they are not against playing the 2022 World Cup in winter, I said in principle, full stop." added the Frenchman at the ongoing UEFA meeting in Croatia.

"We do not know what will happen with the executive committee of FIFA, so it is difficult to say, I would say that the ball is at the feet of the president of FIFA." he added.

On Thursday, FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce revealed that UEFA supported a move to winter and there was still plenty of time for all parties to agree.

Northern Irishman Boyce said that UEFA's members want world governing body FIFA to speak to the game's main stakeholders over when exactly the tournament should take place before announcing any alternative dates.

"What has come out of this meeting is an agreement by the UEFA countries that the World Cup cannot be played in Qatar in the summer. Everyone agreed on that," Boyce told Sky Sports News.

"But we don't want FIFA to make a decision yet about when exactly it will be played. We still have nine years to go and we think FIFA needs to help find a solution that will not cause too much disruption.

"There is plenty of time to do that." Qatar was awarded the right to host the 2022 tournament in 2010, but FIFA, UEFA and footballers' union FIFPro have since called for it to be moved to a different time of year.

Mid-year temperatures in the Gulf can reach a sweltering 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), whereas the average highest temperature in winter is a markedly cooler 24 degrees Celsius.

However, proposals to change the date of the tournament have met with opposition from leading European clubs, who are concerned about disruption to their traditional calendars.

The chief executive of the money-spinning English Premier League, Richard Scudamore, has described the plans as "nigh-on impossible".
