BENGALURU: A force to be reckoned with on the cricket ground, Rohit Sharma is using his clout to take a bite out of the homeless-dog and -cat crisis.

Sharma has teamed up with his friends at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India to star in a brand-new PETA campaign that shows him and a small dog peering into the camera next to the caption "Bat for Animals! Sterilise Cats and Dogs".

Sharma's point? That by sterilizing their dogs and cats, people will be saving the lives of countless unwanted puppies and kittens.

It was being released in time for the 2015 World Cup. It was shot by ace photographer Gaurav Sawn, and Sharma's make-up and hair were done by Neha Kamra.

"Sterilisation is important because I feel that if we can stop [the homeless-animal crisis], there will be control of population among the street dogs", Sharma says.

Sterilisation can prevent countless unwanted animals from being born only to struggle to survive on the streets, face abuse by cruel or neglectful people or end up in animal shelters.

Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce 370,000 kittens.

Sterilisation eliminates the stress and discomfort that females endure during heat periods and greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer. Neutering makes males far less likely to roam or fight.

Pacquiao's Mayweather tactic? 'Use my left and right'

MANILA: Underdog Manny Pacquiao said Wednesday he has a simple tactic to beat American favourite Floyd Mayweather in history's richest fight by two longtime rivals for the planet's top "pound-for-pound" boxer crown.

"Use my left and right (fists)," the Filipino boxing hero told reporters when asked how he planned to deal with his undefeated foe's height and reach advantage, as well as famed defensive skills.

"If I hurt him I expect him to run. Otherwise he might fight me toe-to-toe."

The Philippines is in the throes of "Pacmania" as the 36-year-old, dubbed "The National Fist" by local media, is set to fly to the United States to train for the May 2 Las Vegas bout.

The 38-year-old Mayweather, tipped as the favourite by bookmakers after announcing the megabucks fight last weekend, has not lost any of his 47 fights, in which he has scored 26 knockouts.

Pacquiao has 57 victories and five defeats to his name, including two suffered as recently as 2012. He has two draws and 38 knockouts.

But he exuded confidence Wednesday as he gave out free pizzas to supporters while preparing for his third game as a basketball player in the Philippines' top professional league.

His determination to play for his Kia Carnival team has raised fears he might get injured before the fight, which US media report could net him an $80 million pay cheque.

"I know what I'm doing," said the 1.69-metre (5-foot 6-inch) Pacquiao, a devout Christian who is also the shortest and oldest player in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

He said he would also hit the court again on Saturday, hours before his US flight.

"My Lord, my God, He is the Creator of everything. He knows everything," he added, pointing to the ceiling and repeating his mantra that God will keep him from harm.

Unlike his boxing, however, Pacquiao's basketball career has been underwhelming.

He has scored one solitary point, off a free throw, in his rookie season as player-coach for Kia Carnival.

"That's fine. What's important is my team won. I needed to play to inspire my teammates," he said Wednesday as his courtside struggles continued, going 0-2 with an airball in just under six minutes of play.

With him riding the bench for the rest of the game, his team beat the Talk N'Text team, 106-103, their third win against four defeats.

Pacquiao downplayed criticism by ex-National Basketball Association player Daniel Orton, who was fired by a rival PBA team last week for describing the boxing champ's basketball skills as a "joke".

"Poor guy," Pacquiao said, adding: "I will not react because I would be going down to his level.

"It's like this: No person has ever succeeded without being criticised."

His courtside fans also backed him. "Everyone has a right to strut their stuff," 36-year-old housewife Ginalyn Lacsana said as she cheered the Kia team from her ringside seat.

"You have to show respect," agreed Ramli de las Armas, 29, who went to the PBA games while on vacation from work abroad as a machine operator in Saudi Arabia.

Abhijeet, Vidit top rated Indians in Cappelle-La-Grande Open

CAPPELLE LA GRANDE (France): Grandmasters Abhijeet Gupta and Vidit Santosh Gujrathi will spearhead the Indian challenge in the 31st edition of the traditional Cappelle La Grande chess tournament to start here in the French hamlet.

A part of the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) team that clinched the National team championship just a couple of days ago in Goa, Abhijeet and Vidit will face a strong line-up here helmed by Chinese Li Chao, ranked 31st in the world.

Both Abhijeet and Vidit have an identical elo rating of 2625 points in the latest FIDE list.

The nine-round tournament will be played under FIDE's Swiss rules with over 400 players in the fray. The tournament has a total prize money of 30000 Euros with over 40 prizes up for grabs.

Besides Abhijeet and Vidit, Sandipan Chanda, G N Gopal, Sahaj Grover, S Arun Prasad, V Vishnu Prasanna, M R Venkatesh and S Kidambi are the other Indian Grandmasters to participate in the tournament.

It would be a tough test for the Indians though in a field that comprises more than 80 Grandmasters. Apart from the GMs, the numbers of titled players here exceed 130 making it one of the strongest opens held in Europe.

After a rather subdued performance in the Delhi International in February, the onus will be on former world junior champion Abhijeet, who is training his sights to enter the top 100 in world rankings. About 30 points shy of the coveted mark, he will have his task cut out.

Vidit is slowly but steadily climbing the ranking chart and the youngster is a force to reckon with. With his machine-like technique and rock solid openings, much can be expected from this Nasik-based Grandmaster.

Vishnu Prasanna and M R Venkatesh came up with fine performances in the Gibraltar International Open wherein they downed a few higher ranked opponents to up their ratings. Vishnu has been working hard and the improvement is evident in his game.

Sahaj Grover is the other young Indian Grandmaster who has raised expectations. Late last year, Sahaj finished joint first in the strong Durban International Open and then followed it up by coming in the Indian team in the National premier championship and then further strengthened himself with excellent result in the Al Ain Classic in UAE.

Things have not been so great for Sahaj in the new year but it is time for the Delhi youngster to make amends.

Nagpur real estate firm Vishvaraj to support Arundhati, Rasika

NAGPUR: In a move which will give a big boost to the careers of shuttlers Arundhati Pantawane and Rasika Raje, city real estate firm Vishvaraj Infrastructure Limited (VIL) has decided to sponsor the talented city duo on a long-term basis.

VIL is keen to provide Arundhati and Rasika much-needed financial assistance from this year.

Although no official deal has been signed between VIL and the players, the company has committed to bear the expenses of travelling, lodging and boarding arrangements of both Arundhati and Rasika whenever they play national and international tournaments.

Chairman and managing director of VIL, Arun Lakhani, father of national-level badminton player Sarang, was instrumental behind this agreement. Lakhani has been recently co-opted as the member of the Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA) executive committee.

VIL was the main sponsor during the state-level tournaments held in Nagpur during the last couple of years.

"VIL has always supported various social causes. With Sarang in badminton, we know personally all the players and their parents. Avinash Pantawane Sir (Arundhati's father) has been a mentor for Sarang during his initial years in badminton. Arundhati and Rasika are highly talented players and have a great future. Supporting these Nagpur players is a matter of pride for VIL," Lakhani told TOI on Tuesday.

The development even made chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand very happy. Arundhati, Rasika and Sarang all train at the Gopichand Academy at Hyderabad for the last several years.

"It's nice that Sarang's father has come forward and is helping the duo. This will help both these girls in their career. With a sound financial support, they can now concentrate on the game. Both these girls are playing well and hopefully produce better results in future," Gopichand told TOI.

"Rasika and Arundhati performed well in the last few months but they lack consistency. This sponsorship will probably boost their confidence. Now, they can travel freely and play more tournaments. Participating in more international tournaments will improve their rankings and make them better players," added Gopichand.

The 25-year-old Arundhati, who was earlier supported by Gracelands, is world No. 71.

Southpaw Rasika, 19, started playing international tournaments only last year and has a low ranking of 269. The BAI ranking of Arundhati is No. 3, while Rasika is placed at No. 10.

Gopi game for a cameo in his biopic

Farhan Akhtar worked to get that perfect bod and the style of running when he played Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. More recently, Priyanka Chopra trained hard to step into the shoes of five-time World Champion Mary Kom. Now, Telugu film industry is set to get its first biopic on a sportsperson, and what better story than that of chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand?

His story of triumph against odds is set to inspire the nation. Gopichand believes the same, saying, "We have seen films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which have become an inspiration. I hope my biopic does the same - inspire youngsters."

The film though is in a nascent stage. "Sudheer Babu, Mahesh Babu's brother-in-law and a close friend, told me that he would like to make my biopic. And I said, 'yes we could'. This project is something I am directly involved in," says Gopichand. Sudheer Babu apparently approached filmmaker Mohan Krishna Indraganti for the biopic. "Yes, Sudheer Babu came to me with the idea of making a film on Gopichand's life, and I said yes, we could arrange for a meeting and discuss things further. But we are yet to meet," says Mohan Krishna.

Meanwhile, Shachi Sharma and her father Sanjay Sharma, who worked on Gopichand's biography, The World Beneath His Feet, approached him for a film based on the book. "I was supposed to meet them (Shachi, Sanjay and the team) last week, but since I am going to be busy with the All England Championship, I will be meeting them only end of March. So, I don't have much clarity on this project as of now. However, I was told that they are roping in a filmmaker from Mumbai and are working out production details for the Hindi film. The two sets of people have met one another, but I am not too sure right now, what the final outcome will be. I'll have clarity only when I am back from England and have a discussion with them," says Gopichand.

Asked if he thinks Sudheer Babu is best suited to play him in the Telugu film, Gopichand says, "He has known me since my playing days. He was my practice partner. He knows my game, style and also knows about my life since we have been friends. I do think Sudheer is best suited to play me."

A sporting career cut short by injuries, Gopi is sure what the focus of the biopic is going to be. "I had my first knee injury when I was just 18-19. And before the All England Championship, which I won, I had three surgeries. I had to quit playing at 31 because of injuries. From there to actually becoming a coach, training shuttlers and putting them on the world map - they are two different parts and stories of my life. It will be interesting to see my own story on the screen," he says.

Since it's his story, Gopichand wants to be "as involved with the film as time permits".

"Yes, I would like to stay in the loop and be involved, because I want the film to be absolutely true to facts - the story should unravel like my real life. My struggle, my families and friends' support to helping me reach where I am - I just want everything to be real," says Gopichand. The national coach is in fact also ready to make a special appearance in the film, if need be or if given the choice. "Why not?" he asks, adding, "I am absolutely game to make an appearance in the film."

Sterilisation eliminates the stress and discomfort that females endure during heat periods and greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer. Neutering makes males far less likely to roam or fight.

Pacquiao hints at retirement after Mayweather bout

MANILA: Philippine boxing hero Manny Pacquiao hinted Monday his long-awaited fight against American Floyd Mayweather could be his last, saying he would head into the May bout with retirement on his mind.

"It is coming close. We will announce it," the 36-year-old told local television network ABS-CBN with a meek smile when asked about retirement. He gave no further details.

After years of failed negotiations, Pacquiao and Mayweather hammered out a deal to face each other in Las Vegas on May 2 that will finally give fans the chance to see the best "pound-for-pound" fighters of their generation face off.

Pacquiao said he agreed to take a smaller cut of the purse just so the fight could push through.

"If we only thought about our pride, there would not be a fight. If we had equal pay, the fight would not have pushed through so for the fight to push through, I agreed to it," he said.

US media has reported that the undefeated Mayweather, who turns 38 this week, will receive 60 percent of the purse and stands to make some $120 million with the Filipino taking $80 million.

But more importantly for fight fans, the match will finally show which of the two boxers can really be called the best.

Pacquiao has held world championships belts in an unprecedented eight divisions, and will go into the Mayweather fight with a record of 57-5, with two draws and 38 knockouts.

Mayweather has a 47-0 record with 26 knockouts. He is homing in on the iconic 49-0 record of 1950s legend Rocky Marciano, who retired as an undefeated heavyweight champion.

Pacquiao, a devout Christian, said he was confident of winning because he had God on his side.

"God is with me and I believe the Lord will deliver him into my hands," he said.

Pacquiao, who last year embarked on a much-criticised professional basketball career with a playing-coaching role for a Philippine team, said Monday he intended to play again in the local competition this week.

He said he expected to then head to the United States late in the week to resume full training under the guidance of his long-time mentor, Freddie Roach.

Pacquiao reiterated that he actually enjoyed being rated below Mayweather by oddsmakers in Las Vegas.

"I like being the underdog. I am more motivated," he told ABS-CBN.

PANAJI: Amidst the heat and clouds of dust on a bright afternoon at Vagator, secured in a thick jacket and helmet, Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh made a grand entry riding a custom bike designed by Autologue Design at the Goa India Bike Week at Vagator.

Sharing his first experiences with bike riding, Yuvraj said, "The first time I rode a bike, it was a Yamaha RX100. I had borrowed it from a friend and rode it all the way from Delhi to Chandigarh. When my mum learnt about it, she was upset with me for a week."

When asked whether he finds cricket tougher than bike riding, he said, "Cricket is something I've been doing since I was a kid. Riding the bike is more difficult. But biking means a sense of freedom where you're one with the atmosphere." Singh got a custom bike made by Mukul Nanda of Autologue Design and the two collaborated to launch the Youwecan KTM Bike called X12. The bike is currently being auctioned at the event; the proceeds of which will go to a charity to spread awareness about the stigma of cancer.

Singh said that he is considering being more actively involved with Autologue Design. He also intends to be part of the next edition of Goa India Bike Week.

Michael Phelps takes plunge, gets engaged

Michael Phelps has taken the plunge and gotten engaged. The 18-time Olympic gold medalist announced on Twitter he's marrying Nicole Johnson, who was Miss California in 2010 and has dated Phelps on and off the past few years.

Phelps tweeted early Sunday: "She said yes." He also posted a photo of the couple, hugging in the snow, taken by teammate Allison Schmitt.

Phelps sister, Hilary, wrote on Facebook, "CONGRATULATIONS to these two lovebirds on their engagement! Couldn't be happier for my brother and thrilled to gain a sister, who I adore and love already!"

The engagement comes as Phelps is finishing a six-month suspension from USA Swimming for his second drunken-driving arrest. The suspension ends March 6, and Phelps is expected to return to competition at Mesa, Arizona, in April.

Pacquiao must find renewed focus in Mayfeather bout

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 22 Februari 2015 | 22.58

MANILA: Manny Pacquiao may be a hero in his native Philippines but even his fans and associates admit he will be the underdog in his bout against undefeated Floyd Mayweather in the "fight of the century".

Betting odds in Las Vegas, where the fight will be held on May 2, favour the 38-year-old American, who has never lost in 47 fights. By contrast, the 36-year-old Pacquiao has 57 victories and five defeats -- including two suffered as recently as 2012.

The fight, which was years in the making, will finally answer the question as to which of the two is the best "pound-for-pound" fighter of their generation.

But Pacquiao, who has several other duties outside the ring, has plenty of baggage to shed.

"Manny likes to be in the underdog position," said sports writer Winchell Campos, who is working on a biography of the fighter.

"He thrives on that kind of pressure. It gives extra motivation for him."

Pacquiao has made a fortune as a commercial pitchman, dabbled in television, movies and music, and leveraged his boxing fame to get elected to Congress in 2010.

Last year, he even made his debut as player-coach of a newly-created professional basketball team.

All of that, however, will have to be put aside for the Mayweather fight.

"Mayweather will be the favoured one (in Las Vegas)," said Pacquiao's business manager Eric Pineda, who has labelled the bout the Philippine boxer's "toughest fight".

"But he (Pacquiao) has a big chance. Every time he fights, everything takes a back seat to training," he said, noting that Pacquiao will leave in March to train in the United States, away from the distractions in the Philippines.

Philippine Olympic Committee spokesman Joey Romasanta, an avowed fan of the sport, meanwhile warned that "the fighting style of Mayweather is such that it would be very difficult for any fighter to hit him where it would matter".

"Pacquiao has to be very patient with Mayweather. If he gets too aggressive, there could be problems," he told AFP.

Romasanta said Pacquiao's widespread popularity in the Philippines would, however, survive a defeat at Mayweather's hands.

"It will be a letdown for the country if Pacquiao will lose miserably but I don't think that will happen," he said.

Others are more upbeat about Pacquiao's chances. Veteran sportscaster Ronnie Nathanielsz, who has covered Pacquiao closely, said the fight would have been much more explosive had it happened four years ago, when both men were younger, but said the passage of time favoured the Philippine boxer.

"It is all going to depend on what kind of condition Mayweather comes in. He is older than Manny. He may age overnight in the ring," Nathanielsz added.

The American has lost some of his power, the sportscaster said, adding that he believed Pacquiao still retained much of his strength and footspeed, giving him an advantage.

Regardless of perceptions of his chances, the announcement of the long-awaited fight has grabbed the headlines in the Philippines.

"Everyone is ecstatic," Campos, the sportswriter, said. "Everyone is looking forward to seeing this fight."

McGrath regrets 'inappropriate' shooting safari

SYDNEY: Former Australian Test cricketer Glenn McGrath says he deeply regrets being involved in a shooting safari, after photos of him posing with a dead elephant and buffalo emerged on social media.

In a statement, McGrath said he participated in a hunting safari in Zimbabwe in 2008 "that was licensed and legal but in hindsight highly inappropriate".

"It was an extremely difficult time in my life and looking back I deeply regret being involved," he said.

McGrath lost his first wife, Jane, to breast cancer in 2008. The photographs, in which a smiling McGrath is seen with a rifle in his hands posing in front of the dead animals, had reportedly been posted on the website of Chipitani Safari Company.

The images sparked outrage on Twitter on Saturday after they were reposted on Facebook by an animal activist group, prompting McGrath to release a two-sentence statement on his Twitter account.

Golovkin retains middleweight title

MONACO: Kazakh pugilist Gennady Golovkin made it 32 wins from 32 professional bouts on Saturday as he retained his WBA middleweight world title when the referee called time on British opponent Martin Murray's challenge in the 11th round in Monte Carlo.

Golovkin, 32 and nicknamed '3G', was recording his 29th victory inside the distance against a valiant opponent, who took the champion the longest distance since his first defence of the belt in June 2011.

The Kazakh, making his 13th successful defence, pounded Murray throughout the fight forcing the referee to give him three counts.

For Murray, who received vociferous support from around 200 Britons, it was his second defeat in 32 bouts, with 29 wins -- 12 by knockout -- and one draw.

Bike riding is tougher than cricket: Yuvraj

NEW DELHI: Star batsman Virat Kohli became the second most followed Indian sportsperson on 'Facebook' behind iconic Sachin Tendulkar as he crossed the 20-million mark, the social networking site said.

Full Coverage: ICC World Cup 2015

26-year-old Kohli, the first Indian batsman to score a century against arch-rivals Pakistan in a World Cup match in the 76-run victory on February 15, currently has 20,002,000 followers on Facebook. He is the second Indian sportsperson to cross 20 million benchmark behind Tendulkar who currently has 24,775,138 followers.

Globally, Kohli is listed at 20th position, while Tendulkar occupies 13th spot in the list of sportspersons who have maximum followers on Facebook.

Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list with 107 million, followed by his arch-rival Leo Messi of Argentina with 78 million followers on Facebook respectively.

Kohli has taken over Tendulkar as the most followed cricketer globally on the micro-blogging site 'Twitter' in December last.

"This is yet another milestone on Virat's ever growing list of achievements on and off the field. Virat has gone from 5 million last year to 20 million on facebook today, which is an extraordinary rate of climb and clearly emphasises his popularity and reach as a youth icon. He is extremely happy and humbled to say the least," said Bunty Sajdeh, CEO Cornerstone Sport and Entertainment in a release.

Mayweather to clash with Pacquiao in mega fight

LOS ANGELES: Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao will meet Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas on May 2 in the mega-fight their fans have long clamored for, Mayweather confirmed on Friday.

READ ALSO: Classic boxing match-ups

The unbeaten American made the announcement via the social media website Shots.com, ending weeks of increasingly intense speculation that the showdown had been set.

"What the world has been waiting for has arrived. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao on May 2, 2015, is a done deal," Mayweather wrote.

"I promised the fans we would get this done, and we did." Eight-division world champion Pacquiao dedicated the fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to fans who "willed" it into being.

"I am very happy that Floyd Mayweather and I can give the fans the fight they have wanted for so many years," he said. "They have waited long enough and they deserve it.

The welterweight world title showdown is sure to be the most lucrative in boxing history, generating massive pay-per-view revenue.

More importantly for fans, it will finally pit the two boxers long considered the best "pound-for-pound" fighters of their generation against each other.

Filipino southpaw Pacquiao, 57-5 with two drawn and 38 knockouts, has won three fights in a row since being knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in his fourth bout against the Mexican.

"Pac-Man", who is 36, won a unanimous decision over Chris Aligieri in Macao last November in his most recent fight.

Mayweather, 47-0 with 26 knockouts, turns 38 on Tuesday and has two more fights in the Showtime deal that has made him the highest-paid athlete in the world.

Mayweather is also homing in on the iconic 49-0 record of 1950s legend Rocky Marciano, who retired as an undefeated heavyweight champion.

Mayweather is coming off a unanimous decision over Argentine fighter Marcos Maidana last September in a rematch of a bout that Mayweather won by majority decision.

Both fighters said after their most recent victories that their showdown should happen.

In January, the two met unexpectedly at a Miami Heat NBA game and arranged a meeting at which discussions apparently got serious.

Previous bids to put together a fight between the two -- most notably in late 2009 -- had run aground over various issues, including division of the purse and a drug testing protocol.

Animosity between Mayweather's camp and Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum has also been a stumbling block.

US media reported the contract Mayweather signed for the fight gives the American 60 percent of the purse.

Pacquiao said last week he had agreed to the drug-testing procedures Mayweather wanted as well as other demands, and he believed an announcement of the fight was imminent.

Because each fighter is contracted to a different US telecaster, contracts also had to be signed by rivals Showtime and HBO, who will team for an historic joint pay-per-view.

It is the second time Showtime and HBO have made such a deal. In 2002 they teamed for the fight between then-heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, who was with HBO, and former champion Mike Tyson, who was with Showtime.

Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach immediately backed his fighter to win. "Floyd should enjoy being the A-side while he can," Roach said. "Because on May 2, Manny is going to put him on his backside."

Fans and Vegas bookmakers abuzz over Mayweather-Pacquiao

Fight fans rejoiced and social media exploded on Friday at the news that the long-awaited clash between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao would at last take place in Las Vegas on May 2.

"Can't wait to see" tweeted former boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard, who won titles in five weight divisions.

Former English footballer Gary Lineker, wrote on Twitter: "Now that is a fight!"

Ring Magazine, the so-called Bible of Boxing, said: "Mayweather-Pacquiao is here, kiss the record book goodbye", and film actress and fight fan Rosie Perez tweeted: "Finally! God Bless America, two times!"

Mayweather, 37, will carry a 47-0 record into the bout, while the 36-year-old Pacquiao is 57-5-2.

"What the world has been waiting for has arrived," American Mayweather said in announcing the clash on the social networking website Shots. "Mayweather vs. Pacquiao on May 2, 2015 is a done deal."

The Filipino countered with: "I am very happy that Floyd Mayweather and I can give the fans the fight they have wanted for so many years. They have waited long enough and they deserve it."

Las Vegas was abuzz by the excitement of what promises to be the biggest fight since the days of Ali and Frazier.

Mayweather opened as an almost 3-to-1 favorite in the earliest lines.

The welterweight showdown in Vegas is projected to be the most lucrative ever in boxing with Mayweather expected to haul in a minimum of $120 million in a 60-40 split with Pacquiao, who figures to make at least $80 million.

"Outside of the Super Bowl, this could be the single biggest wagering event we've ever had," Jay Kornegay, Westgate Las Vegas sports book director, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

This year's Super Bowl drew a handle of almost $116 million in Nevada.

Jwala Gutta rings in Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year is an important celebration in the Gutta household. But this year, it was a low-key affair. "My mom is away in China, and she rang in the new year on Wednesday with her mother," says badminton champ Jwala Gutta, who credits her good looks and gutsy nature to her Chinese roots.

Jwala's mother Yelan, who hails from Tianjin, North China, came to India as a 17-year-old and remained here after she met Kranti Gutta, Jwala's father.

"Today, she is as Indian as she is Chinese," says Kranti, who named his younger daughter Insi, which is short for Indo-Sino.

NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

Jwala: For me it's all about food. My mom's whole fish platter with oyster sauce is my favourite.

Kranti: She is an awesome cook. She even makes amazing idli, dosa and sambar.

AN INDO-SINO FUSION

Insi: My name reflects my Indo-China connection. In that sense, I am more Chinese than Jwala!

Jwala: Insi actually knows Mandarin, but I can barely distinguish between the sound of Mandarin, Japanese and Korean.

KEEPING THE TRADITIONS ALIVE

Jwala: I have been to my mom's place to visit my grandmother and my two uncles just once, in 2002. My grandmom likes to gift me things in red because it's believed to be auspicious and bring luck. So, even the first chaddi I got from my grandmom was red.

Insi: my uncle and aunt sent me a red jade with a goat on it from China this year. This is the year of the goat, and since I am a 'goat', wearing red is supposed to ward off bad luck.

Viswanathan Anand tops Zurich Classical

ZURICH: Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand played out an easy draw with Sergey Karjakin of Russia in the fifth and final round to win the Classical section of Zurich Chess Classic.

Awarded two points for a win and one for a draw under new rules in place here, Anand tallied seven points in all, winning two and drawing the remaining three games in the six-player round robin. This also meant a much-needed recovery in ELO points after losing heavily in the preceding Grenke Classic tournament.

Hikaru Nakamura of United States finished a clear second, a full point behind Anand after settling for a draw with Levon Aronian of Armenia. The third game of the fifth and final round in the Classical format was also drawn between Russian Vladimir Kramnik and Fabiano Caruana of Italy.

Kramnik finished third, having drawn all his five games while Aronian, Caruana and Karjakin finished tied fourth on four points apiece.

The battle now shifts to the rapid chess format where all players play once more against each other in the same day.

There are five more rounds remaining to decide the overall winner but in rapid chess each win will be worth only one point and a draw will just earn half a point.

This effectively means the trio of Aronian, Caruana and Karjakin are out of title contention barring a huge turnaround in fortunes. Kramnik, too, is two points behind Anand and it seems unlikely that the Russian can make a match of it either.

Nakamura, however, might fancy his chances under the faster version of the game. However, in the blitz tournament played on the first day to determine the colours of the players, the American had finished out of top three.

Anand played the reverse closed Sicilian as black and was not troubled at all.

The Indian ace gave up the Bishop pair early in the opening to get an active position and Karjakin had to return the favour to maintain the balance. The middle game saw pieces changing hands at regular intervals and the ensuing endgame was just level.

The draw was agreed to in 42 moves.

Nakamura went for the Anti-Berlin, where he played risk free but also without many chances. As is the nature middle games arising out these setups, the King file paved the way for exchanges and even though Aronian was slightly worse, it was not difficult to keep the position together.

Eventually the players reached a hopelessly drawn king and pawns endgame.

Caruana tried the Italian opening against Kramnik but the Russian was well armed. Sacrificing a pawn in the middle game, Kramnik liquidated in quick time to get an equal position and the peace was signed in just 28 moves.

After some exciting chess in the first four days, there was a certain lull on the final day of Classical as those with white played safe. However, much action is promised on the final day with five rounds of rapid chess.

Results round 5 Classical: Sergey Karjakin (Rus, 4) drew with Viswanathan Anand (Ind, 7); Fabiano Caruana (Ita, 4) drew with Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 5); Hikaru Nakamura (USA, 6) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm, 4).

Anand loses to Nakamura at last hurdle, finishes 2nd in Zurich

ZURICH (Switzerland): Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand went down to Hikaru Nakamura of United States in the Armageddon game and had to be content with a second place finish in the Zurich Chess Classic that concluded, here on Friday.

A sudden change in rules during the final stages of rapid competition paved the way for a final game even though it was not stipulated in the initial regulations.

Anand, having beaten Nakamura in Classical game, also had the better tiebreak score than the American and would have been crowned the winner but for the sudden inclusion of a final game in case of a tied result at the top.

It was clear that the five times world champion was not mentally ready for another game after a long day of chess and it showed as Anand crumbled with white pieces. For Nakamura, it was the second big win in the year after he had won the just-concluded Gibraltar Masters.

For the records, Anand started the day with a full point lead but two losses against Nakamura and Levon Aronian of Armenia cost him dearly in the five rapid games slated on the final day.

The Indian ace, however, scored a crushing victory against Fabiano Caruana of Italy and drew the remaining two games against Russian duo of Vladimir Kramnik and Sergey Karjakin.

Ending the rapid with two points out of a possible five, Anand gave Nakamura the chance to catch him on points table as the American scored three points to reach nine points for a shared first with the Indian.

Anand still had the consolation of winning the Classical section and the Indian ace also wins back majority of points lost at the preceding Grenke Chess Classic just a few days before this event.

It may be recalled that Anand had finished a disappointing seventh out of eight participants in that tournament and this was indeed the great turnaround performance the Indian has been known to produce for many years now.

Kramnik won the rapid section scoring 3.5 points out of his five games. The second place here was shared by Aronian and Nakamura on three points each while Anand ended tied fourth with Karjakin. Caruana could not find his form here too and ended last scoring just 1.5 points.

In the combined standings, Kramnik finished third on 8.5 points after Anand and Nakamura, while Aronian was a distant fourth tallying seven points in all.

Karjakin ended another point adrift of the Armenian while Caruana finished at the bottom of the tables securing 5.5 points in all. The Classical games netted two points for a win and one for a draw but in rapid the players got just one for a win and half a point for a draw.

Having regained his form, Anand is likely to take part in the Gashimov memorial in Azerbaijan in April. A tournament which may also see World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in action.

Results rapid round 1: Vladimir Kramnik (Rus) drew with V Anand; Sergey Karjakin (Rus) lost to Levon Aronian (Arm); Hikaru Nakamura (Usa) beat Fabiano Caruana (Ita).

Round 2: Nakamura lost to Kramnik; Caruana beat Karjakin; Aronian beat Anand.

Round 3: Kramnik beat Aronian; Anand beat Caruana; Karjakin drew with Nakamura

Round 4: Karjakin beat Kramnik; Nakamura beat Anand; Caruana drew with Aronian;

Round 5: Kramnik beat Caruana; Anand drew with Karjakin; Aronian drew with Nakamura.

Final standing: 1-2: Nakamura, Anand (9 points); 3. Kramnik (8.5 pts); 4. Aronian (7 pts); 5. Karjakin (6 pts); 6. Caruana (5.5 pts).

Lance Armstrong admits careless driving in Colorado hit-and-run

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 19 Februari 2015 | 22.58

DENVER: Lance Armstrong has pleaded guilty to careless driving for side-swiping two parked cars in the Colorado ski resort of Aspen late last year in an incident for which his girlfriend initially took the blame, authorities said on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old disgraced professional cyclist avoided a court appearance by paying $238.50 in fines and court costs by mail last week, according to the Pitkin County clerk's office.

Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life from racing in 2012 after a U.S. Anti-Doping investigation. He later admitted in a television interview using performance-enhancing drugs during his championship run.

This week arbitrators ordered Armstrong to pay $10 million to a sports insurance company for bonuses he reaped from his tainted victories, calling the case "an unparalleled pageant of international perjury, fraud and conspiracy."

In the Aspen incident, Armstrong was initially cited for leaving the scene of an accident and driving too fast for the icy road conditions when he crashed into the cars in the upscale ski resort one night in late December.

According to police reports, a resident who heard the crash said that when he came outside to investigate, a woman, later identified as Armstrong's longtime girlfriend Anna Hansen, approached him.

Hansen apologized for the accident, the resident told police, said she would pay for the damages, and left the scene.

When investigators went to the Aspen home the couple shared they found a vehicle registered to Armstrong with "significant damage."

Police said Hansen told officers she was driving because Armstrong had been drinking "a little bit" at a charity event the couple attended at an Aspen hotel.

But a hotel valet later told police that Armstrong was behind the wheel when they left, and after police challenged Hansen's story she ultimately admitted the couple made "a joint decision" to say she was driving to avoid publicity.

Armstrong was then cited for the accidents.

Pitkin County prosecutor Andrea Bryan said earlier that Hansen was not cited for making false statements to police because authorities encourage witnesses to be truthful, and charging people who volunteer information is counterproductive.
